I reached out to Janine Colon in February to make favors for my September wedding. She wouldn't negotiate on the cost, saying she uses the best ingredients and works alone, so I believed her and agreed to her cost. We wanted the favors in a box, on a bed of confetti, and with a note included to briefly explain why they were our favors. After trying her products (admittedly they were good) and agreeing to what the favors would look like, we hired her and paid the first 1/3rd to lock the deal.
I didn't hear from Janine again until she wanted the 2nd payment. I sent her a check and an email asking some questions. We now approached mid-August and I still hadn't gotten a response. I then reached out to her again and expressed my concern that a lot of time went by and she never got back to me. She claimed that she did respond, but when I asked her to resend her email, I got a list of reasons why she no longer had it. I don't believe she ever responded.
My wedding was quickly approaching and we weren't moving forward. I was still waiting on the images of the favor boxes that I had asked her about a month ago. I emailed saying "I'm very frustrated with how this process has been going and I am very concerned about these favors." I was focused on the project, she decided to take it personally and responded with "I am trying to not feel attacked, and also trying to remember that you are a bride and stressed out." She then proceeded to tell me how she has all these other obligations ("I work full time-I have 3 kids and juggling everything. I did not get home til very late and fed my family and went to bed-now I have been in meetings all morning") and that "You can either be patient and wait-or if you have links you want or have found- you need a 4x3 box. They are very hard to find-but they are available." Excuse me!?!
I paid her to do a job and so my expectation was that she was going to do it. You are a business owner; you take on a new business in addition to your regular life. You don't pick one or the other. I couldn't believe she was putting the project on my lap to complete. When she finally sent me the information I was looking for, she also said "I need the important note as soon as possible to get the right paper and get it to the printer" - oh so when I asked for the same thing 3 times you can take your time, but when you need something I need to get it to you as soon as possible?!
Finally, she kept going on about how elegant these favors were going to look, so I asked for a mock up. Yea, I'm still waiting on that. When I saw the favors at my wedding, elegant is the last thing I would call them. Not only did the confetti not match my color swatch, it looked like construction paper sent through a shredder. The note she included looked fine, but I didn't know until the day before my wedding it would cost me an extra $200 dollars. Had I known that, I wouldn't have included it. Most importantly, the favors themselves were only okay. They didn't taste like they had during our trial, they tasted like they came out of a box (definitely not the best ingredients). I was incredibly disappointed that for the amount of money I spent on favors and the drama I had to go through with her, they were just okay.
Glad that experience is over - this is a warning to all people that want to do business with her. Expect high drama with less than satisfying results. read more
