Our group went for the combination appetizer : the falafel was really crispy and delicious, the hummus was creamy and perfect, the yougurt dip was really lemony and zesty, and the other assorted things were very unique and something different to try. We just ate it with the mass amounts of warm bread they gave us. YUM! I ordered the mix grill platter. The lamb chop was tender and extremely flavorful, the beef skewers were also tender and amazing, and the chicken(which was my favorite) was absolutely PERFECT. The food is good, but maybe a little 'basic'. That's the only reason I don't rate them a little higher. I know that this could have been better. I believe my family just ordered the wrong items, which ranged from the mediocre to the spectacularly bad. We looked around at other tables, and saw visually delightful looking dishes - the appetizer sampler platter ... we should have ordered. Here's what we ordered, from the best to the worst: Kofte kebab plate: Ground lamb and beef, with a decent yogurt dipping sauce. Not a ton of flavor, but not bad. Spices were non-existent. Iskender (grilled sirloin over homemade bread, tomato sauce & yogurt): This had some flavor. Overwhelmingly the flavor of stewed, untreated tomatoes. I had a couple of bites of my husband's dish, and thought it was okay. A whole plate would have been pushing it. It needed a salad, or some rice, or something to offset the pile of meat and tomatoes on a piece of bread. And then, my poor daughter. She ordered the Shrimp kebab. It looked so pretty. Never in my dining experience have I ever put such an overcooked shrimp in my mouth. Literally the worst shrimp dish I've ever eaten. Ghastly bad. My young daughter, who normally loves shrimp, quit after two. Thankfully she was happy with rice and salad. So many other good reviews. Perhaps we needed to try lunch first. The food and service were spectacular. We ate for two for under $40 with soup, meals, drinks and baklava at the end. The lentil soup was the best lentil soup I've ever had, and it was only $3 for a "cup" (closer to bowl sized). Just looking at the soup in front of me, I would've guessed $6-7 if it were any other restaurant. The waitress was not over-attentive, but she was there when we needed her. I had the falafel salad, which was amazing. My girlfriend had chicken shish kabob, which she wouldn't let me near; usually I have the pleasure of sampling from her plate during the meal, and then finishing off her food when she's done. My falafel balls were huge and filled with what I would guess is a goat cheese/tahini mixture-- a very pleasant surprise. Surprisingly, the non-falafel part of the salad was so good, that I had eaten most of it before I remembered to mix in the falafel. The atmosphere is nice.. the decor is definitely planned and done thoughtfully. It was a little dark for lunch, but I'm sure it would be perfect for dinner. My only real complaint was that some of the patrons there were congregated in a group of about 8 and they were shouting over each other so they could carry on multiple conversations, which started to give me a headache (no joke). The openness of the dining area really amplified the din of the shouting soccer-moms with babies hanging off of them. I can't really fault the establishment for obliviously noisy people without any sense of appropriate volume, but I have to complain about them somewhere. So.. 5 stars for the restaurant, 0 stars for annoying stay-at-home moms who think they are living the american dream by shouting niceties at each other in a pseudo-expensive restaurant. Save it for the bridge club meeting or the parking lot at your local gymboree, ladies. I was looking for a restaurant in the West Portal area and selected Bursa because I like Mediterranean food and the 4 star rating. Another good yelp pick. I order the Musakka after reading one of the reviews and it indeed was delicious. My sister ordered the stuffed eggplant which was also good but I preferred the Nutmeg flavor of the Musakka. She like her dish better because it came with rice. I though the side salad that came with the meal was very good. Others ordered the chicken kebab and rack of lamb. Both meats were tender and flavorful.. We ordered the Combo appetizer for 4 of us to share. (Grilled pita bread, Hummus, Baba Ghannouj dolma, falafel, etc) Great appetizer. Lots of different things to try and all were great. To top it off, the glass of Pinot I had with my meal was very good. Thumbs up for me! read more

I can't really give an entirely honest and comprehensive review of this place as I arrived late and everyone was just finishing ordering and I just said "chicken kabobs" because the last person to order said that and I didn't look through the menu and it was more of a I'm just going along because it's someones birthday thing. I did not try any appetizers and got my plate of chicken kabobs which came with rice and salad. Honestly, the chicken was bland in flavor and rather dry. The rice was just rice and the salad I believe was arugula which I just don't care for. The chicken kabobs I get at street fairs taste much better to me. The restaurant is okay and the waitress was very friendly but I was not impressed with my first impression of Bursa. Maybe I'll come back and order something different and try the appetizers some day but for now, all I can give this place is three stars and one of them for the friendly waitress. read more

Unfortunately with my latest experience I need to downgrade rating stars. First of all, we waited for like 15 mins. before anyone came to get our orders although several servers saw us but just walked past to other diners. I had to request one of the servers that we'd like to order. Next is the portion size is getting less. The kebab plates seemed to have a bit less rice this time around. My dining companion had to make sure that they gave him the included salad made with arugula. In fact, it is stated on the menu that kebab plates include arugula salad. However, three times on recent visits he was given instead just regular salad. This is unacceptable. Also we order an extra kebab as they give only one per diner. It is sometimes really not enough to match the portions of salad and rice. However, I find it a rip off to charge 1/2 the price of a full plate meal cost for only one kebab so it's $6. Also for $6 the additional kebab this visit consisted of four very very tiny pieces of meat interspersed with the typical red bell pepper and onion pieces which too were not more than two, three tiny pieces at most. That's also unacceptable. Going back to service issues, on more than one occasion servers would pass us by refilling water glasses but not ours. Have to ask. I really am rethinking returning soon again after this experience. read more

Went with a group of friends tonight and had a fantastic meal. The food was very fresh and the spices were spot on. We ordered the appetizer sampler which was delicious (especially the baba ganoush) and I had the lamb kebabs which was fantastic. The ambiance is charming and can be romantic (they dimmed the lights after we arrived and the sun went down). The portions were large. It's worth noting though that entrees are around $13-18 and appetizers are in the $6. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Very cute place in West Portal that I never even knew that was there ! I didn't have a full meal because I was not very hungry but I had the falafel balls and the an eggplant dip. They both were very good! The falafel balls were huge and was full by my second one . And the eggplant dip was tasty and the side they gave me with it made it even better! It seems that the only times I come to this place I'm with my parents. My dad gets some major lamb cravings and he likes to come here for the kebabs. Everything I've had here has been tasty and the service is a bit on the slow side but very attentive. There's one particular waiter that my mom has a bit of an old lady crush on. The kofte wrap that I got was huge, it looked like it was rolled in a whole sheet of lavash and it was really tasty. Their fries are really good, fresh and crisp. My mom got the mussaka, which she declared her new favorite. My dad of course got the lamb kebab which he seemed to enjoy just as much as normal. We all topped it off with a turkish coffee, medium sweet, which was delicious but had a little too much coffee grounds in it. I've only had turkish coffee twice, maybe it's supposed to be like that? Went here on Valentine's day we had a reservation which was helpful. The food was amazing I grew up eatting allot of turkish food so I was really happy that every thing tasted so good. My date pick this place put and we order the falafel and lentil soup which was one of the best I had.. we had the grill platter that had everything.. the negative was the little piece of lamb I was kinda shocked and lol how small it was. It's always difficult to concentrate on food when you're surrounded by good company. Of course, if it's really bad or really outstanding, it's memorable, but when the food is OK or good, it's not so memorable. In this case, the food was good, but not outstanding. I would definitely recommend the combo appetizer plate, which was really good. I ordered the mixed grill, which was OK. I also tried someone else's salmon, which was also just OK. The Zinfandel that I ordered was very good (although I can't remember the vineyard). What gave this place 4 stars was the people who work there. I was organizing a surprise birthday dinner, and the person on the phone was incredibly nice and very accommodating. He even asked if I would like to bring a cake (which I was going to ask about) and didn't charge a fee for it--always nice. The servers were all very nice as well. Overall, Bursa isn't bad, and I'll return if I happen to be in the 'hood (and not craving a burrito from El Toreador). But for excellent Turkish food, I'll head back over to Troya, which has always been outstanding. read more

Favorite Mediterranean restaurant I've found so far in SF! I used to work at a family owned Mediterranean restaurant on the east coast, so ever since...I'm super picky about my mediterranean food. This place wins. The lunch special of a kebab, rice and salad is the perfect portion size, super cheap, and everything is made to perfection. The ingredients are fresh and the chef they have back there makes everything to perfection...even the little side salad, I eat the entire plate every time. Appetizers: a roasted red pepper dip and pita. The crab cakes---light and full of crab. Both were great with a glass of pinot. Entrees: Grilled salmon with pilaf and asparagus. Salmon was fresh, moist, and grilled to perfection. PERFECTION. Chicken kebab with salad and pilaf. Wonderful, moist. On Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I were searching ALL OVER the place for a place to have a great Valentine's dinner. But obviously, everywhere was packed and you needed a reservation. (We should have made reservations ahead of time -_-). We stummbled into West Portal and stopped by Bursa (which we've both never heard of or been to). And since I love Mediterranean food, I thought it'd be nice to try this place. There was a wait, but not as badly as other places. So we ventured around West Portal for 20 minutes before we were seated. The seating was a little cramped, but it was a nice atmosphere. The waitresses and host were very friendly and helpful, and our food came out right away. I ordered the Halibit and my boy ordered Salmon. Both of which came with pyramid set up rice, and veggies. I've got to say my favorite of my dish was the spicy, tangy sauce on top of the Halibut. It's amazing. Good stuff! read more

I'm so happy that I've finally tried this place out, even though just for lunch! They have a great lunch deal, $8 for a wrap or a rice plate with a kebab. Both comes with a generous side of salad seasoned with vinagarette. The red lentil soup ($5) was really really good. My BF really loved his falafel wrap. I ordered the kofte (lamb and beef mixture) kebab and it came with a sauce that was OK. The kofte itself was a bit salty for my taste, but the sauce and rice definitely came in handy. I don't know why, but I really like the rice. It's very soft/light. It's better than Chinese rice hands down and I can eat that all day. I wish the salad came with the vinaigarette on the side because it was a bit overpowering but other than that, still delicious. Service was great and I loved the overall atmosphere of this restaurant. I will definitely be back again soon and hopefully for dinner so I can try all their other things on the menu like beyti and moussaka. read more

I've been coming here for the last 3 years and the food has been consistently good every time! I've had almost all the appetizers and entrees and there hasn't been any disappointment. Sure, some I like better than others, but I think that's personal taste more than how it's prepared. The price is extremely fair for the food quality and portion size. I came here in March with my family and some very picky eaters and everyone enjoyed their meal. My favorite is the halibut, it's usually hit or miss at restaurants but it's definitely a hit here! Everything was fresh and rich with Mediterranean flavor. The staff were welcoming and considerate enough to check and see when we were ready for the next delicious dish. I recommend the combo plate, crab cakes, red lentil soup, and musakka (all veggie and it came still bubbling hot out of the oven---gotta love that!). My friend and I ordered WAY more than we could eat in one sitting and didn't regret it one bit. I looked forward to the leftovers the next day. A bonus is the little gas fireplace near the door....that way if you sit near this all-too-familiar San Francisco breezeway you have a cozy warmer next to you. This is our go-to date night place. But I have to give some caveats. My husband and I share the $15 appetizer combo, which is to-die-for. The bread and oil with dipping spices is delicious. We order it with some greek or turkish beer. And that's our dinner. Anytime we've ordered an entre (moussakka, mixed grill, kebabs) we've been underwhelmed. But that appetizer combo keeps us going back and back again. Haven't tried lunch or dessert, but great wine selection. The only reason we haven't tried dessert is because the combo will leave 2 people stuffed. I do have to say the service is always excellent. Once, we had a reservation but had to wait and were given complimentary wine while we waited. Another time, they were super-busy, but allowed us to sit at the bar and eat. They come with the type of rice eaten in Greece and Turkey and a "Greek/Turkish type salad. $8. Yeah, for real!! You can also have the kebab in a wrap with (excellent) French fries too, same price. Also delicious. This type of food is usually expensive for this quality. But their extremely popular $8 menu is the bomb. I adore this place, and would go more often if I lived closer. I've been here with visiting family members, who all enjoyed it. The food is really great, the atmosphere is nice, and so is the service. I especially love their lunch specials! I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but I certainly hope they are. My roommate and I had lunch there and I remember feeling so happy and full, for less than $10! All of their food is light and flavorful. You leave feeling satisfied, but not overloaded. Came here for lunch on Sunday. We tried the chicken, kofta, and spicy Adana kebab and I had the falafel wrap. Each kebab plate comes with one kebab, rice, and salad. I had my wrap with fries. I wish they had a combo kebab plate cause 1 kebab was not enough for my hubby. If you are hungry I would recommend the wrap. I feel it was all just average. Stopped by here last night on a date w/ my boyfriend and pretty much fell in love. I had been on the lookout for nice restaurants around the area for a couple weeks now, as I just recently moved to Park Merced and West Portal is only a short drive away; and I wasn't disappointed here. The ambiance is a mixture of classy, friendly and overall very cute. Everyone who works here is nice and immediately on hand to help you out. We started off with bread and the falafel as an appetizer; crunchy and delicious, with the red lentil soup served shortly thereafter. I used to work at a Greek place, so I'm fairly familiar with the cuisine and the Greek salad I ordered was to die for. I would definitely recommend Bursa. :) read more

Wandering the streets of West Portal with no specific dinner destination in mind my beautiful lover noticed the sign for Bursa from across the street and commented that it looked interesting. With just that simple suggestion to explore it we ventured over, glanced at the menu and decided to give it a whirl. Wishing to sit close to one another we opted to sit at the small bar instead of the tables and proceeded to enjoy a scrumptious meal with every dish more flavorful than the last, the staff as kind and attentive as could be and the owner a gem of a man who introduced himself to us and offered to gift us each a glass of wine. Why? Simple! He kindly commented to us that he wanted his restaurant to draw more of the energy we were sharing between us. One of my favorite places to eat in San Francisco. For lunch, this place is great. The menu items are $8. I usually get the Salmon Wrap but all the wraps are pretty good. My second favorite is the Citrus Chicken Wrap. If you like lamb, I recommend the Kofte Wrap or the Lamb Kebabs. The wait time may be awhile before you get your food, because they make everything fresh. The dinner menu is a lot more expensive but the food is good. read more

I love Mediterranean food and Bursa has possibly one of the best I've had in all of the Bay Area. The rice with the kofte and kebabs - definitely comparable to when I had it in Dubai a few years back. Most places use starchy short grain Mexican rice but Bursa doesn't. Further more, Gehad, is an extremely gracious host. Knows exactly how to make you feel at home, and has the staff to parallel that. We even got beers on the house. I thought this place was a physical therapy clinic specializing in ACL injuries. To my delight, it is actually an adorable Turkish restaurant. Bursa is like Burma Superstar in that it is a great place to go in early courtship. Like Burma, it is nice but not too fancy and it has "ethnic" food to show how developed your palate is. The interior is pleasantly dark (who doesn't look better in the dark?) and the service is friendly. We (me and my smooth operator date) ordered the combination meze appetizer. It was fabulous because it came with a little bit of everything (since I can never make up my mind this is perfect). The falafel was crispy, the tabbouleh was really fresh with tons of parsley (like it should be). We also ordered the mixed grill plate to share. It is a good thing too because it is way too much food for one person. They warn you that they usually cook the meat to a medium. I prefer a medium rare (actually I like my meat so rare a skilled veterinarian can resuscitate it but didn't want to scare date with carnal tendencies). I skipped the rice the entree came with entirely because I filled up on the flat bread and the babaganoush. Ooops. The waiter forgot our dessert menus and when he realized his error he sent over baklava and creme brulee.
