We used to go to the one on University Ave , after they closed we were so sad! We had been a few times to the Emerson location but hadn't been in a bit! Weber we showed up we saw one of our favorite waiters from the University store! It was great to see him! He remembered our drinks. We all hate writing about a bad experience, but this was a total nightmare. Even our colleague, Evan, agreed and he has been here prior. So bad that he informed management of his intention to never return and why. Maybe the feedback will help them? We waited over 30 minutes before the waiter returned to tell us a few things in our order weren't available. If you'd come back in 5 or 10 and told me, I'd just order something else and be fine with it. We like to arrive after lunch rushes, so that wasn't it. We waited a while to be seated, after that everything is thru a QR code on the table, which didn't work, so we'd eventually have to grab the waitstaff. The food was bland and the drinks were flat. Add to that the totally unreasonable prices. The only saving grace is the nice dining room. Spacious and comfortable with plenty of tables and chairs. You know how I operate. You can never go wrong with tea leaf salad! The palata was buttery and delicious with curry on the side. The garlic noodles were tasty and had a sweet chili sauce. The cucumbers cut through the oil with freshness. I was disappointed with the nan gyi dok because the sauce was too watery, making it hard for it to stick to the noodles. Ambience: this place has great ambiance and comfortable seating Food: My colleague and invite ordered the Ruby Rainbow Salad. I don't want to judge the restaurant based on one dish but the dish was very confusing to eat. It was neither sweet nor salty and the taste was very mixed. I would say if you are going to go to the restaurant, I would read the descriptions and ask the server some pointed questions about what it is your are getting. We weren't even there that long--maybe an hour--If you want to run a fast-food-style turnover operation, then don't market yourself as a sit-down restaurant where people expect to relax and enjoy their meal. They didn't even ask if we wanted dessert or coffee. It felt like we were being punished for daring to occupy a table for more than 60 minutes. They had few tables available at that time and no one was waiting for table. There are plenty of other places that actually respect their customers' time and don't treat them like an inconvenience. I hate giving a bad review, but this was truly an awful experience. I went here once years before, and loved it. We typically have consistently great experience at Burmese restaurants, however, this one was just awful. We came in on a weekend during lunch, and the place was pretty empty. we were seated, and everything other interaction from there happened through the QR code that you scan on the table. This meant that we literally had to flag down serving staff if we needed anything. The sodas were flat, the food was the most unseasoned and unpalatable, and the low light of the meal was the pumpkin chicken, which literally was over steamed chicken topped with canned pumpkin. I never send anything back, but we sent this one back, and all they did was add some black pepper on top. I don't think we will ever be coming back, it was really disappointing, and expensive to boot. read more

For the salad, our server brought it with the ingredients still separated and mixed it in front of us. The tofu was crispy and came with a savory and slightly sweet dipping sauce. I ordered a beef kebat and my friend got the Burmese eggplant curry. My dish was beautifully stir-fried with a good mix of meat and veggies (tomatoes and onions). This place is great! If there is anybody visiting from outside of California, I always make sure to take them here because most people haven't tried Burmese food, and this place does a wonderful job at keeping the food authentic but also generalizable to the public's taste preferences. It reminds me a lot of thai food, but certain items like the tea leaf salad, and nuances in the pad Thai, etc. taste a little bit different, so I would definitely try it if you are in the area. Additionally, most of the cocktails on the menu are great and pretty strong, so I would highly recommend that as well! Before Covid, they used to introduce all of the ingredients of the tea leaf salad in front of us and mix it up in front of us, but they don't do it anymore, and it seems like the portion sizes got a little bit smaller, but I would still try it if you have never tried a tea leaf salad! It is definitely a nicer place, and so the indoor ambience adds to why it seems so nice, but the outdoor seating hasn't necessarily done a great job in keeping up at ambience and therefore in justifying the prices. My friends and I got family style meal and were pretty satisfied! Our favorite thing on the menu is definitely the mango white fish. The coconut rice was soo good as well. We also got the tea leaf salad which is a classic if youre eating burmese. Its served on a plate while other places serve it in a bowl with the ingredients separated. Great place with some amazing Vegetarian options. We have been to this spot a couple of times in the last month and have had a great experience each time. Went with a reservation and were seated immediately. Our order has the Burmese MANDATORY tea leaf salad, samosa soup and some main dishes. Fiery Tofu and Vegetables, Eggplant and Garlic, Burmese Pad Thai, Home Style Fried Rice and Coconut Rice. All these dishes are delicious except the Pad Thai. Even with medium spice it was super sweet and lacked flavor. The Fiery Tofu is my personal favorite along with the Tea Leaf Salad. The portions are generally perfect to share. The service is good but not the best, especially towards closing time. They tend to rush you to pay, eat and leave before 9 p.m. Totally recommend this place for some delicious Burmese food. They used to have a beautiful outdoor setup given the COVID restrictions. I will definitely miss that when dining there again! read more

Sorry to give a bad review but I decided to order take out from here. I ordered the sesame tofu and it says in the description it's "fried" the tofu. It does not mention its made with soft tofu like one of the other tofu dishes. I was expecting a more firm fried tofu, not a mushy soft tofu. So was pretty disappointed when I got home to eat it. When I put a fork to try and eat the tofu was so soft and mushy it couldn't even stay on the fork. We came here for a family dinner. My sister in law made dinner reservations so we were seated when we arrived. The service was great! Everyone was really welcoming right when we walked in the door. As we sat down, we were greeted with water and the server took our drink orders. I got the fresh coconut which was really good and refreshing. We did family style so we got a few dishes and shared it amongst the table. Some of the dishes that we got were: Samosas, Palata, beef curry, Garlic Shirmp and Eggplant, Fried rice, Basil beef, and a few other dishes. Everything was really good! Ordered the Vegetarian Pad-Thai and had asked for it to be made vegan. They clearly mark this option available as vegan on their menu and hence I would expect their kitchen staff is trained to handle such requests. But the Pad Thai clearly had eggs in it and so the staff clearly ignored the instructions. Would not expect this to happen at an upscale restaurant like Burma Ruby. I've been meaning to try this place for so long since I had heard very positive comments from people. They have an extensive menu organized by type of protein. We had the Pumpkin and Tofu Stew, Pea shoots, and Garlic Noodles. The garlic Noodles were different than what I've had at other Asian restaurants in that it was very lightly flavored and not overly greasy or seasoned. I decided to give Burma Ruby a third try after a few years off - this time for delivery. Things seem to have gone downhill more. Salt and Pepper Chicken - The breading was extra crunchy in a good way, but the chicken was not seasoned. I didn't detect salt or pepper. Pumpkin Pork Stew - The pork cubes was unacceptably dry, and the pumpkin was way overcooked and mushy. The stew itself needed more seasoning and was barely pushing a mild spice instead of the requested medium spicy. Lemongrass Chicken - Another victim of not enough salt, even for my salt adverse taste buds. At least this was somewhat spicy (requested very spicy), and the ginger was prominent. Coconut Rice - First time I've met a coconut rice I didn't like. This was very mushy. Total cost of this barely above Panda Express quality dinner? $65 for two. Gotta love Palo Alto! It was tasty, but for one piece of naan and a little bit of curry, it's a rip-off. 3. Garlic Noodle $12 with Roast Duck $2. Not at all like Vietnamese garlic noodles. These are thin, flat rice noodles with slivers of duck. I wasn't a fan and would try to Nan Gyi Dok next time. 4. Lemongrass Chicken $15. Pretty uninspired 5. Burmese Pork Curry $17, meh. 6. Burma Ruby is a great place to eat! The location and outdoor seating are perfect for the vibes! The staff is kind and accommodating based on your needs, such as moving tables to fit parties, sitting near heaters for people who get cold easily, subbing meats in dishes, etc. The service is also great with the waiters checking in multiple times despite the rush and amount of people during peak hours. The best appetizer BY FAR is the "Tea Leaf Salad." I'm not a fan of salads but my god this was great! I once saw a funny quote saying "No great story ever started with someone eating a salad!" I'd respectfully disagree after eating this one, the tea leaf salad tasted yummy and very authentic! The main courses were good, my only complaint is that the portion size is on the smaller side considering the size of the plates. I'd highly recommend the "Pad Thai with Tofu", it was brilliant! My group also got the "Coconut Chicken Curry," but felt as if that was more of an average dish. To my surprise, the curry was red and didn't taste like it had or was cooked with any coconut. One of my old co-workers told me I HAD to try Burmese food so we went here. That was over 4 years ago and the only thing I remembered was falling in love with the tea leaf salad. This is my third time going back, and I went with my friend because she said she'd never tried Burmese food before. Of course, this time I order it again, and its flavor is consistent (even 4 years later!) and my friend, who's not really a salad person, really liked its unique flavor and said she'd be down to eat it on a regular basis. I also love how the server explains what goes into the salad and mixes it right in front of you! We also ordered the eggplant dish, and the eggplant wasn't over-cooked or bland. My friend and I both love eggplant, and I think this place nailed it. We also ordered the basil beef (as recommended by a waiter), and that didn't disappoint either! My friend said it reminded her of a Chinese beef dish, but with a more flavorful taste. (Warning, if you're not really an onion person, this dish comes with lots of onions. Not quite sure if this place has dishes that are necessarily amazing, especially as a vegetarian. I have gotten the Garlic Noodles without Tofu and the Spicy Eggplant before. Both dishes were kind of on the bland side. The noodles did have a good garlic flavor to it, but that was pretty much it. The eggplant wasn't really spicy at all, and honestly tasted like almost fully cooked eggplant with not much sauce and flavor. I think the decor of this restaurant makes it seems like a high end place, but that is pretty much it. I don't think the flavor of the food is really worth more than 3 stars in my opinion. However, noticed that for the same price as Rangoon, food portions were quite small here. Cutlery look big, quantity was definitely less and doesn't do justice for the price.
