Chicken Rice Bowl, a ton of rice not enough chicken.
    franco C.

Was off of work late and wanted to find something relatively healthy to eat, found this place and thought ok looks pretty good why not. Was a little hard to find at first because it is basically inside like a small warehouse, there's no seating btw it's literally a Togo place where your order on a touch pad, no big deal for me because I was planning to take it home anyways. It's pretty decent I think comparable to chipotle in a sense but a bit healthier chicken had good flavor as well. I think my only complaint would be that there wasn't enough chicken in the bowl there was a lot of everything else like cauliflower/rice/ cabbage but I think there was barely like 2 oz of chicken in the bowl. I'm glad I didn't order the wagyu barbacoa, which is more than twice the price of the chicken bowl, because if each bowl has as small a portion of protein as my bowl did I would be upset. I would've given it 4 stars if the protein felt proportionate to the rest of the bowl.

Very good!!!! Only thing is I wish it had more chicken and not a huge amount of rice. The green smoothie is perfect, not too sweet.

Really hearty, tasty and nutritious. The flavors are subtle with so many different ingredients and somehow they all go together perfectly.

Upon entering, I noticed that it is a sister restaurant to the Lazhou Noodles but before we could change our minds, the hostess sat us (lol). I went with the main beef noodle soup, and we also tried the dry noodles with spicy beef. I was expecting the food to be very similar to their sister restaurant - BUT the food here was so much better I was SO surprised. The broth tasted better, the noodles were higher quality, and the beef was also much more tender and had less gristle. it made me wonder if it was a fluke or if this location was just that much better as this restaurant was also much more crowded versus the other locations. I can't wait to come back and bring friends, and though San Mateo is parking is not as friendly, the food experience definitely makes up for it!

Noodles are hand pulled and made directly in front of you through a glass window where you can view your noodles being made. You can select from a variety of noodle textures and sizes. The noodle dishes are separated between soup and dry noodle versions. For the soups, recommend the Lanzhou hand pulled noodles soup or sichuan braised beef stew noodle soup. For the dry noodle, our favorite is the chilli oil noodles with wide noodles. For appetizers, the spicy wonton is really good. Their spicy sauce has just the right amount of kick and is mildly sweet. While they also serve dumplings, I kind of feel there are dumplings are just average --- stick with the noodles!

My go-to here is, of course, the tsukemen. As a self-proclaimed ramen purists - keep the onsen egg and medium rare pork. All I need is a dank broth with some perfectly (maybe slightly tooth) al dente noodles. While the tsukemen here might not be for everyone , it totally hits the spot for me. The unique taste of the dipping broth is one which can only be found here, as well as their noodles which have their own size and consistency. Don't get me wrong, all their other offerings are pretty good too. In particular I like the mazesoba. Recently they also hatched a new limited duck tsukemen. As tough as it was to pry me away from the original or the soupless ramen, I was convinced by staff this would be enjoyable - and it was. Super light but complex. This had a rich and earthy flavor whole also being light and, fragrant with yuzu. Service here is exceptionally friendly but also rigid. Items tend to come as they are with little to no flexibility for adjustments, but they'll let you know very nicely. Overall taishoken makes the short list of bay area ramen spots for me, in particular when craving their rich & hearty tsukemen that'll be sure to satisfy any ramen craving, but even in hot weather. Besides that, taishoken has a particular spirit it carries, one that I recognized even from spotting their original location on Tony Bourdain's earlier "no reservations" episodes. It's a subtle but confident attitude - one that says I understand you like things a certain way, but trust us. For any diners willing to accept those terms, they will be greatly rewarded.

We also ordered a bowl of pork over rice which was shared by everyone in our party of 6 and enjoyed. They have a happy hour where several appetizers are discounted a few bucks so we ordered the gyoza (potsickers 3 for $4). The key to eating here for dinner without waiting is to get there before the crowd which is before 6pm. After that there's most likely a wait outside the restaurant. There are plenty of shops for you to window shop while you wait. Note they do charge 20% automatically with 6 or more in your group.

This place was discovered by my wife while looking for noodle soups in the area. Me, I'm not particularly fond of super spicy. But their signature spicy beef has a very unique and addictive quality to it. Be forewarned - the chili oil the beef is bathed in is no laughing matter. We used to get warnings for the works to spoon in the chili oil a little at a time as it is a slow but powerful burn. But that's not what has be coming back. The main draw for me here is the blackened stinky tofu. They accompany this pungent snack with fresh cilantro. Peanuts and a sauce that match it so well. Might not be the best date food but it is delicious. Service is fairly minimal although staff are very informed and can answer questions. Order through the phone and for any toppings, you can get up and help yourself. Overall. This is probably one of my favorite noodle dishes when in the mood for something spicy or something quick. The portions here are also very healthy so come hungry.

Must-try birria spot - I keep coming back for a reason…read more This place is on my list of must-tries for Mexican food, and I've been here countless times at this point. The beef birria tacos are SO good like the flavor, the birria consomme, the sauce, the meat. Everything just hits right. This is a legit hole-in-the-wall kitchen, and that's exactly what makes it special. No frills, just really good food that keeps you coming back. Every time I'm craving birria (which is often), this is where I go. The quality stays consistent every single visit, which is huge. You know exactly what you're getting and it never disappoints. For the price and taste, the value is excellent. You're getting authentic, flavorful birria without paying sit-down restaurant prices. If you're in the area and craving some birria tacos, do yourself a favor and try this place. It's the kind of spot that turns into a regular rotation real quick. Trust me, I'm proof of that.

While photos of their SF location suggest some seeing, this OG location is pretty much pickup/delivery only: a fairly literal hole in the wall, located along a random quiet street. Most folks would probably opt to take home or eat at one of the "nearby" parks, but we've gotten in the habit of just eating in the car, which... not so great for something as messy as birria lol. I'll say that for most folks, this would probably easily be more a 4 star spot, while for us, it's more a 2 star since we're unlikely to come back. That's not to say the food was bad: on the contrary, the flavors were quite good, and the consomme was less salty than some of the others we've tried. But their food is HEAVY. Not just the birria itself, but also the burrito we got, and heavier than other places we've been for some reason, with the birria sitting in a pool of oil soon after we picked it up. This probably isn't a deterrent for most people though, so take this as you will. Accessibility: Not too relevant since this is really just a pickup spot, with the pickup window being at the usual height you'd find elsewhere.
