Toxic, Undertrained, and Unprofessional - Hemet, CA Burlington store (Store #1007) Pros: Meet some great coworkers and supervisors! Some were so supportive and kind. I appreciated the ones that helped teach me new skills. It was nice to help customers and put a smile on their faces! You also get a 15% discount, sometimes discount 30% depending on the month. Cons: I received almost no proper training. I was expected to handle complicated customer situations with little to no guidance. There is very poor management. When I asked for help, my manager (Jennifer) publicly humiliated me many times. She once stood behind me while I helped a customer and yelled, "I'm done. I'm over it," clearly referring to me. Then she continued, "She's been here since September; she just has too many questions. She came from Temecula." She mentioned these details so I would know she was talking about me. This was in front of customers and coworkers. Moments later, she was talking to me like nothing happened. When I ran into an issue at the register and needed help, she made a rude comment again about me "always having questions." If I had been trained properly, I wouldn't need to ask. The schedule app glitched, and I missed a shift that wasn't showing on my end. I apologized and showed them proof on my phone. Instead of understanding, Jennifer called me a "loser" three times in front of another manager, who laughed at me. After that, the discomfort continued for the rest of my time. Jennifer often acted passive-aggressive towards me. Supervisor Emily was also known for yelling at employees, especially new hires, both in person and over the walkie. This only added to the toxic atmosphere and made it harder for newcomers to feel supported. The store manager, Steve, was cold and judgmental. After I submitted honest feedback in a company survey (which was supposed to be anonymous), I started being targeted. Every time I worked with him, I was the only cashier on duty, even during rushes with 15+ people in line. This happened multiple times consecutively, and it was clear it was intentional. Steve would stand silently at the front of the store, arms crossed, not speaking or offering help, just staring while I struggled. He would call people out for mistakes but never offer support. Managers regularly talked about customers behind their backs, judging their outfits and behavior, which was incredibly unprofessional. Public yelling over the walkie was common, both for small mistakes and for new employees. Expect to be embarrassed in front of coworkers and customers. If you're new, you'll likely be thrown on the register without knowing how to process layaways, tax exemptions, or desensitize products (like jewelry and accessories that constantly beep when customers leave). Unsafe working conditions we regularly closed after midnight, and the parking lot is not safe. I encountered people under the influence near the store doors. I often had to be on high alert walking to my car alone. Overall, this was a toxic environment where management made employees feel replaceable and unsupported. The bad far outweighed the good. Advice: Invest in proper training. Don't just throw new hires into situations they aren't prepared for. Don't humiliate your employees for asking questions, it means they care about doing the job right. Calling someone a "loser" or making rude, personal comments is never acceptable in any workplace. If you're going to ask for employee feedback, don't retaliate when it's honest. Protect anonymity. Steve: Leadership is not silent or loud judgment, it's active support. Standing at the door with your arms crossed while your team struggles is not leadership. Stop relying on yelling and public shaming as a way to correct mistakes. It only creates fear and resentment, and doesn't help employees improve or feel supported. Jennifer: Being a manager means leading with patience and professionalism, not passive-aggressive behavior. Embarrassing a new employee for asking questions isn't leadership; it's bullying. I went back to the store after reaching out to the manager, Mr. Johnson, and after properly checking the merchandise, had satisfactorily processed my refund. 10/17/2020... this review is for how management handled their business today. Credit card machines are down .. it happens I get that ... cash only during a pandemic is a hinder. I do not carry much cash lately do to COVID .. that being said if you can't take cards you make sure every single person entering that build knows before they waste their time up and down the isles then wait in line to be told CASH ONLY!! As a manager I would make sure every single person has be told walking into the building. They said we announced it .. I was there approximately 30 minutes and did not hear anything announced!! I live at the Village, a senior living community with about 250 residents, we use to use the alley between the Village behind Burlington, Marshall, Ulta Beauty and Pet Smart as a walking pad for our morning walk. Why is this now considered trespassing, and we can no long use it as our walking pad? Is it ok for these 250 residents to shop at your stores but don't use our 20-foot-wide alley as a walking pad? I did 2 stars in hopes this review gets read by managers of the Hemet store. The store is what it is, usually looks fine, not much to do when customers are disrespectful to the products end up all over the place. My rating is for the cashiers (sometimes only one) that end up with a ridiculously long line and all of the heat, rude customers and complaints get directed at them as if they had a say in calling in more help. Management needs to do better by them and not let them get harassed and abused at check out! If the manager decides to only have one cashier vs 20 ppl in line then have the manager come and stand there so they can receive the complaint directly and not let the poor cashiers stand there trying to do their job and also having to be the upset customer's punching bag!!!! Managers, should go up and tell customers they're sorry they have poor management and sent everyone to lunch at the same time, that they didn't schedule accordingly, that someone called off, that the registers are offline... whatever it is it's their job to defend the interests of the company and store! The old Walmart finally got taken over by great stores! Burlington wasn't a bad idea! I hope this place lasts along with Sprouts and Ulta next door! This Burlington reminds me of a bigger version of Ross/ Marshalls! They have a little bit of everything. So random but the lights are so bright that's probably why it reminds me of Ross! The other Burlingtons I've been to have dimmer lighting but regardless that doesn't change how you shop! Other than that you have to shop around to find good stuff here! And also a toy was on discount , been charged a regular price. I talk with one of the manager and they take like was a not big deal. I got 80 dollars back. 80 dollars mistake? I love shopping at Burlington. I shopped with them for years when I lived in Atlanta and shopping at the HEMET location is no different. The items are great along with awesome prices for name brand clothing and home goods. The staff does the best they can under staff shortages and irate customers. At times the customer is not always right, especially during the times we are living in where there is no respect for authority and anything goes. I love my shopping experience at Burlington and I pray that customers also learn to respect others as they would like to be treated as well. Life is not a one way street! The supervisor "sherry" needs to be replaced! She was extremely rude to me specifically because I came in with a clothing voucher. She said none of these items are business attire (my voucher was for regular everyday clothing) she continued to go on and on about how she wouldn't hire me if I came in wearing these clothes. I wasn't trying to argue with her just kept explaining to her that it's not for business attire, my case worker asked me what I NEEDED! she then called the manager which told her all of my clothes were fine because the voucher doesn't say "business attire", other than a pair of shorts because the voucher didn't say "shorts". The cashier next to her also asked for help with a return and she was pretty rude to him as well, I noticed him shaking his head when she turned around because of her attitude twords him. My cashier was Rachel and the "supervisor" was Sherry. Instead of trying to help her she was rude and cut her off, and also demeaned her in front of me. Following that she tried to argue with me when I offered advice as to how to help our situation. Long story short her attitude and lack of customer service will keep me from returning for a long time, which is a shame because your store is really nice and in Hemet has the best selection of clothing that I am looking for. Her attitude was unwarranted and given the situation was completely out of line. They made a small issue into a whole dramatizing situation . My dog , my daughters emotional support animal peed on the floor . I do apologize for that , I cleaned up after her right away . A white tall male security offered me towels at the door . It was good until another younger male security , 25-31 black curly hair with glasses started demanding I exit the store . " he said I don't need your dog shitting and peeing everywhere " I told him why are you taking to me like that ? I'm almost done, I'll leave right now . I don't see a visible sign saying no dogs . "And the man saw me walk in with her and said nothing . Iam a loyal customers for years and my dog has visited the store before . My husband told him not to talk to me like that and he aggressively started verbally abusing him in front of my children and other customers . another associate White female with glasses started recording instead of helping control the situation . She screamed get the fuck out of the store " I told her to stop recording and she insisted she had the right . that' man with curly black hair kept aggressively speaking to my husband and told my daughter " your dads a dumbass " when she began to cry to leave him alone . The manager came a short darker tone lady and just made it worse . She didn't even ask if we were okay or what happen . Inmediately she began to kick us out , and said your kids are here " like yes lady your associates scared my kids the moment they raised there voice and began to use profanity . Each associate seemed eager to use violence instead of hearing us out . We did begin to leave and the man said " don't ever come back to my fuckin store again" I have short recording from another customer who was appalled by the way they treated us they. There's more details I would like To discuss and the recording you can hear your employeers aggressively speaking and were speaking in a calm manner until they took us out of our character . No one should be disrespected like that especially a customer you're crew needs proper training. They came of strong and the lady seemed to be on some type of substance; a minimal situation turned into a whole confrontation real quick . you're store has been really unorganized , and long lines making it hard to shop . But I'm a loyal customer and I figured it was going through tough times with COVID and all . I have never been treated like that in my life and my kids were crying because of the way your crew was screaming at us . It was 3-4 ppl against us treating us like criminals even the police were called . I have never been harassed in such a way . This is the worst customer service ever. First of all if you decide to buy undergarments, and you choose the wrong size they will not return it for you with a receipt. When i told theme that it doesn't tell you anywhere in the receipt that i canot return them, they still wont return it. Im going to contact a lawyer about this because a company needs to make sure they are following their own company policy. Oh and i also called corporate office and they are a joke also they told me that they can't fit everything on the receipt for their return policy so they were not going to do the return. If anyone is returning this is their so call return policy. With that said, you have to make sure your patience for bargain shopping is on high to find quality things you may be on the look out for. When I go to this Burlington, I love that I don't have to spend hours shopping and looking around for things since this particular location is very well organized. Even the clearance section is pretty neat and you don't have to go scrounging around looking for things. I scored on some pretty good Nike gym apparel and shoes ($25 LunarGlides on clearance!) today and am contemplating going back for another trip to find some more stuff I probably don't need lol. Love this store and this location so much! The store is always very clean and always has the best selection on every type of goods I'm looking for! I especially love the home decor and makeup product sections! The staff is always so nice and I've had one lady at this location ignore my requests for assistance but in all fairness she was coming out the back room at a fast pace so I'm assuming she was walking to fast to hear me. While the store was all stocked for holiday shopping, you aren't told until leaving that shopping carts can't leave the store. Really??!! I had six heavy bags to carry out to my car. And no offer to help carry or watch my cart so I could pull up my car. But right next door, the Sprouts market had no such shopping cart restrictions. So why can't Burlington just hire another minimum wage worker who does nothing but return carts to the store before the homeless take them?
