On a drive from Ohio to Georgia, I'd been excited to stop for lunch at a Cuban sandwich place in…read morePigeon Forge, Tennessee, that came highly recommended on Yelp. (Cuban sandwiches in Pigeon Forge?!! Yes, I know: WTF?!!) Anyway, I could not locate the frigging Cuban sandwich place. Apparently, it is illegal to display street numbers on Pigeon Forge's main drag, and I guess the Cuban cafe was too well hidden among the go-kart tracks, fighting lumberjack dinner shows (again, WTF?), Jesus stores located two doors down from sex-toy shops, video arcades, and the whole cornucopia of cheapo crapola that is Pigeon Forge. After a couple of U-turns in the area where I thought the Cuban spot was supposed to be, I could not escape Pigeon Forge soon enough and made a bee-line southward. And I couldn't face Gatlinburg, either, so I hit its bypass. I proceeded in the crawling traffic through beautiful Smoky Mountain National Park. (To you Alabamians in the F-150, your garganturan vehicle will do just fine above 25mph in the quarter-inch of slush at the higher elevations.) I drove through sleepy and sad Cherokee, North Carolina, and past Sylva, seeing few places to stop for a bite and developing a seriously gnawing hunger. Finally, I arrived in Franklin. Running a bit late and starving by this time, I thought "fast food," and I saw Bojangles. Bojangles!! I'd heard of the wonders of Bojangles fried chicken and biscuits for years, but for some reason had never been to one. Well, Bojangles, you ain't no Popeyes. At least not at your Franklin, North Carolina location: bland, dry fried chicken that was barely above room temperature, bland "Cajun" beans that were mouth-scaldingly hot by contrast. The biscuit was pretty good, though. Fresh iced tea was the best thing about this meal. And the fact that the whole lot was only $5 and could be scarfed down in about five minutes. There were a couple of tables of old guys wiling away the mid-afternoon hours with coffee and iced tea. That sounds about right: probably five stars for that purpose.

On Friday afternoon, I came to Mountain Fresh to order three chicken sandwiches with side salads. I…read morewas excited because I've always really loved this place, especially their chicken sandwiches, but unfortunately this visit was very disappointing. When I got to the counter, I had a hard time hearing the employee taking my order because she was speaking extremely quietly, almost whispering. I asked for three chicken sandwiches, but she never asked what I wanted on them. I didn't think much of it at first because I assumed they would come with the usual toppings--lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, etc. I noticed she entered "no cheese" without asking me whether I wanted cheese, which I thought was strange, but I didn't question it. I hadn't been to Mountain Fresh in over a year, so I genuinely thought maybe the way they took orders had changed. When she asked what I wanted for the sides, I specifically said side salads with no dressing. She repeated "no dressing" back to me, so I thought everything was correct. Unfortunately, by the time I realized how wrong the order was, I had already left. When we opened the food, the chicken sandwiches were basically just chicken and bread and were missing the toppings I expected. I then looked at the ticket and noticed that instead of entering "no dressing" for the salads, it said "no sauce." I'm not sure how "no dressing" became "no sauce," especially since she repeated "no dressing" back to me. The salads ended up coming with dressing. My mom couldn't eat her meal because the dressing from the salad had gotten onto some of the chicken as well, leaving it with a vinegar/vinaigrette taste. She was extremely disappointed because she has also really loved Mountain Fresh in the past. We ultimately ended up throwing away food that we had paid for, which was frustrating and a waste of money. What disappoints me the most is that this could have been avoided by simply going over the order with me and asking what I wanted on the sandwiches. I understand that mistakes happen, and I also understand that I could have opened everything and checked the food before leaving. However, I hadn't been there in over a year, so I thought their ordering process might have changed. When an employee repeats "no dressing" back to me, I also expect that "no dressing" is what will actually be entered. My family and I have had good experiences with Mountain Fresh in the past, which is exactly why this visit was so disappointing. Unfortunately, based on the customer service and the number of things that went wrong with this order, I'm leaving one star.

Our hostel host pointed us here, and the second we stepped in, we were greeted by Jaguars jerseys on the wall, Mark Brunell and Jimmy Smith. Then we got seated, and right above our table was Fred Taylor's Florida Gators jersey along with a picture of the Swamp. All three of us at the table were Jacksonville guys, so between the Jags gear and the Gators tie-in, it felt like home before we'd even ordered. We all got the wings, and they were excellent. This place oven roasts them first, then fries to crisp up the skin, no breading involved, and that combination does something special to the flavor. Best wings I've had in a while. One of my buddies also ordered a margarita and said it was excellent. Service was great throughout, and the price landed right in that sweet spot, not cheap, but not expensive for what we got either. Fair value across the board. If you're ever in Franklin and want a spot that feels like home even when you're hundreds of miles from it, this is the place.
