This fried chicken breast in a banana nut glaze was delicious and unique. This dish is worth a visit in itself. There was also a good deal in the special menu for two with a selection of entrees for $15 each. Portions were large and everyone enjoyed their selection. My husband and I decided to give this place another try for brunch today. We had been another time for lunch and the food was ok but service was extremely slow. We were the first people to be seated as the doors opened at 11. We waited once again for awhile before our server approached our table. We each ordered the All American breakfast. I ordered my eggs fried hard and the waitress seemed confused by that. I explained so they were just not runny. I also asked for an english muffin instead of biscuit. She had to go back to check and see if that was ok? She came back and said it would be a $1 upcharge and I said fine. My husband ordered his with eggs over medium, ham and biscuit was fine. We did not see our waitress again for refills or anything. 30 minutes later and after seeing other people's food come out(we were first ones in the restaurant) this meal came out. Eggs were burnt on other side, hashbrowns cold, bacon was premade and cold and my husband got bacon not ham. There was no chance I was eating what came out. 30 minutes and food cold and missing items. We joined some friends for Happy Hour and appetizers on Christmas Eve, our first visit. Most of the people in our group had eaten there several times before and talked about how good it was. We sat down a little after 2pm and ordered drinks. They have a decent wine list on a table card with 15-30 reds on one side with whites on the other. They also had a separate seasonal cocktail menu. I had a glass of red wine and my partner had beer. Other people in our party ordered cocktails which looked very good. I ordered the Truffle Potato Wedges and the Calamari. The calamari was PERFECTLY cooked! Tender, not chewy at all. It was topped with sweet Thai chili sauce, amazing. The Parmesan Truffle Wedges were good but not very hot. My partner ordered the Appalachian Waldorf Salad which he enjoyed. I got to taste the Onion Blossom and the Crab Dip, both of which were very good. Overall the food was enjoyed by everyone. The service on that day was very slow but since it was Christmas Eve I'm guessing they were short staffed because it wasn't busy at all. Some of our party commented that the service had been slow on previous visits so it might be hit or miss. The service staff were very nice, checked on us regularly making sure we had what we needed. Crab dip was amazing (a few pieces of bread was over toasted and hardly edible, chef should have discarded them. Butternut Squash ravioli had a great taste but tough and sauce was too oily, would not recommend this item. Table tops have a tacky sticky finish which definitely needs some attention. The seasonal veg this time was " green beans, zucchini, squash and tomatoes", and each of our dishes came with 3 beans, ONE half sliced piece of each zucchini and squash, and sundried tomatoes. But it took 1.5hr to get food, and our waiter hardly ever came by. After 45min we had to ask for the bread he said the dishes came with. And bc he didnt come back for another 30min, we then had to ask front desk to check on our food, which was brought out immediately and was luke warm at best. Last minute stop as we drove through town. We walked in and was greeted by a pleasant young lady. The atmosphere was welcoming and open. They had a St Patrick's day Special of Corn beef and cabbage. My husband said it was the best he had had in a Very Long time. I had the cheeseburger and fries. I loved every bite. I also had a side Caesar that was crisp and flavorful. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. I noticed that the restaurant has a couple private rooms that one might be able to reserve for a small private dinner. I thought that was nice. My friend and I are from out of town and we decided to stop by Root and Barrel for lunch. We were blown away with the ambiance of the restaurant as well as the food, which was great! I ordered the half size Fall Salad w/ salmon on the side and I was surprised; Didn't expect my portions to be big but it really filled me up. The salmon was very good but I asked for it to be cooked medium but got well done, but it was okay 'cause it was still soft and flavorful. My husband and I got into Franklin right around dinner time and I had been looking at places to eat as he drove. I was a bit put off by some of the reviews so we almost didn't go to JR Chophouse but man, am I glad we did!! Our server was Tuck and he came to the table quickly. Let me just say that he is a true gem and any restaurant would be lucky to have him! He knows what true customer service is and he provides it without cutting any corners. You can tell that he loves his job and the restaurant and the FOOD!! He knew the menu, made recommendations and even let us try the She Crab Soup because he said he gets mixed reviews and didn't want us to be unhappy. (It was good, but not what I was expecting and I didn't order it). We asked if he thought the crab dip or the calamari was a better choice and he spoke so highly of both that we ordered both and omg!! Both were just as good as he said! We have never had calamari like that (almost like mozzarella sticks in size/shape) but it was OUTSTANDING!! I do not know how they do it, but honestly the best we ever had including the sauce! The crab dip was equally good and it would be tough to decide if I had to pick just one of those two to order again. The Focaccia bread was delicious!! The taste, the texture, the amount...all perfect!!! My husband got the Butternut Squash Ravioli and I got the NC Trout. The trout was mouthwateringly good! The almonds, the sauce...everything was PERFECT!! The Ravioli was equally good and the brown sugar sauce was really different and raised it up a notch from any ravioli we have ever had. I honestly can't say enough about how how good EVERYTHING was!! We were too full for dessert so I can't comment on that. Even the live music was really good and added to the ambiance of a perfect evening meal! I honestly can't remember when, or if, my husband and I have had such an across the board AMAZING dining experience. I can't recommend this place enough! We live in Gatlinburg so it is a 2 hour drive, but I have no doubt we will take that trip again and although I would ask for Tuck, all the servers seemed friendly and happy to be there!! Absolutely delicious with the house made tartar sauce and accompanied by rosemary bread and garlic dipping sauce. As a local, we have been frequenting this venue since it was Root & Barrel, after a few years of struggling experiences, I will say that a major change has happened with the management and the food. Took forever to be greeted by the waitress (Doreen), ask her for suggestion between Chicken Salad croissant or blackened chicken quesadilla. She said definitely the chicken salad, so I took her advice and ordered that, and some French onion soup to start. Soup took a good 15 minutes to arrive, then as I'm almost finishing the soup Doreen arrives to tell me when she put my order in ( 20+ minutes ago) she forgot to inform me that they didn't have the chicken salad croissant. . Our lunches were excellent and it was a pleasure having Doreen as our server. Caesar Chicken Wrap was fantastic.

We made a reservation in the afternoon for the evening hour for 5 o'clock. When we got there, there were no booths available, even though we requested 1 with our reservation. All the manager said was I'm sorry we have no booths available, we can't ask them to get out of one of them....really??????? Saying I'm sorry is not the answer. Maybe the manager needs to train the servers HOW TO READ!! Obviously, they don't care about reservations!! VERY , VERY poor customer service, the least he could have done was offer us some sort of compensation, we were not even looking for that however, a free coke would have been sufficient. Franklin is not a big city from what I can see, but it seems like this area of N.C. is a good place to go if you are looking for good food and the Root and Barrel is just that. If you are going to try this place, you definitely want to get their brunch menu, which a week later on a Saturday, I found out sadly is only served on Sundays (I hope they change that.) I had the Chicken Biscuit w/gravy, and bacon - it was awesome. They had many other great breakfast items to choose from which is why I came back the next Saturday on my last day of being in the area, but it was a no go. Lastly, I our server Sarah was amazing. This is place is worth your while so be sure to check their hours before your visit! We ordered a little bit of everything. Our favorites were the bbq wings, pork belly bites, fried mushrooms, and pimento cheese balls. The salmon is really good too. The chicken salad sandwich was a bit too lemony for my liking but it's a matter of preference. The fresh ingredients were obvious in every bite though. However once we had a waitress she was totally fantastic! Great suggestions about the menu! We shared a half order of the fried pickles. The pickles are made in house and lightly battered. We loved them. Served with a spicy ranch. I had the shrimp, grits, and sausage entree. It's only the 3rd time I've ever had grits in my life and they were delish! The shrimp were really big and the sausage added a nice flavor to the dish which was creamy and quite tasty. My daughter had pasta and marinara with chicken.
