Stopped in for a biscuit before a morning outing. We were kind of surprised at the amount of products available here. Groceries, wine, and beer. They also make pizzas and sandwiches. The biscuits were pretty good. We asked about the pizzas and they said you could phone in your pizza or sandwich order and then come to pick it up. Overall, pretty good experience ordered at lunch about 1130 on a Saturday. There was a crazy long line and the food took a bit longer than I expected with lots of people who ordered after me getting their food before me prices were kind of high but the quality of the product in general was overall better so it was worth it. read more

This is an amazing local spot to eat at if you're in Highlands, although it can be a little pricey. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries, which costed $16. I also ended up ordering a Coca-Cola. However, it took 19 minutes to come out, but it's also the Fourth of July weekend, so it was kind of busy today. Taste-wise, everything tasted exquisite! Food was good at the Mountain Fresh Grocery. The menu had great options that made it hard to choose like the hot honey chicken sandwich or the turkey, cranberry, brie sandwich or the reuben or the patty melt on marbled rye. My husband got the cheeseburger with fries and I got the patty melt with swiss and marbled rye with fries. The fries were homemade and out of this world (star of the show) and my sandwich was good, except it comes medium rare (as advertised) and that was a little too pink for me. We've enjoyed Mountain Fresh Grocery in the past, but last night's experience was disappointing. We called before their posted 6:00 PM closing time to place an order for a grilled chicken salad. Our GPS showed we would arrive by 6:00, and we told them that. The employee checked with the manager, who told her not to take the order because they were "too close to closing." Here's my issue: if you're not going to serve customers, close. Don't keep the doors open and the phones on while turning away orders during posted business hours. We would have been there before closing -- and said so -- and were still turned away. Posted hours are a commitment to your customers: either honor them or change them. I understand kitchens need to wind down before closing. If the grill shuts down at 5:30, say so -- post it, or have staff explain it. What's not okay is letting customers believe you're open for business when you've already decided you're not. A simple fix would go a long way: post a separate "kitchen closes at X" time. Until then, call before you count on getting food anywhere near closing time. read more

Mountain Fresh is exactly what you'd expect from a local market in a mountain town like the highlands. Like any good local market, it features a smattering of local beer, wine, coffee and general provisions, as well as pretty darn good cooked-to-order food, for dine in or take out as well. During our week in Highlands we ended up stopping in several times for lunch or just to pick up some good or beer to bring back to the cabin. The place is quite popular for breakfast and lunch, so do plan ahead as parking is decent given the location, but it does fill up. Its a great way to experience this part of NC while also grabbing a great breakfast, some items from the grill, some delicious pizza and anything else you may need for your Highlands stay. read more

We had just finished hiking and made our way to the Highlands downtown area to walk around. We were craving a salad on a warm summer day and decided to stop by Mountain Fresh Grocery for the perfect post hike meal! What we got: *Caesar Salad - it was really good. The caesar dressing was a little different here, but we loved it. *Prosciutto Caprese - Sandwich with prosciutto, mozzarella, pesto, and tomatoes on a french baguette. This was so good and full of flavor. The only negative, was that the tomatoes were small and got lost in the sandwich with all of the other stuff. I'd still get this again though! The grocery was fun to walk around in as they have a lot of items and choices. The baked goods looked really good, especially that deadly good peanut butter pie, maybe next time! We also got a bag of frozen fruit for our dog for a nice cool treat as we ate. I noticed that the staff tried to ring it up, but it actually did not scan and was missing from my total they gave me. I mentioned it, and they scanned it again. They were very grateful and appreciated that I spoke up - something I very much noticed and appreciate right back at them for sharing their appreciation. It definitely felt like a small business transaction, that you just learn to love! I definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the area. Great stop over for a quick pick me up. MFG seems to be a place where everyone goes to. Pizza and sandwich deli with a quick grocery for city folks. MFG seems to cater to the seasonal visitors and tourists. We found their selections very suitable for such a small town. Nothing spectacular but nice to find decent choices for sustenance and pick me ups for hikes. Their sandwiches, pizze and fresh baked breads were as good as any around Atlanta. They also have a decent selection of dry goods for picnics, light bites and wines. Nothing outrageous, but it's a bit over priced even beyond expected market up. I've been going to MFG for years. The experience I just had is exactly the reason locals will tell you to avoid it. It's overpriced, mediocre at best and the management has no idea what they're doing. I placed an order, was given the wrong item and then asked to stand in line to pay $2 more because of their error. Got charged for the drink after I asked to just cancel the order since I thought it was ridiculous to ask a customer to pay for their error. I've been in the customer service arena for some time and this is about the most ridiculous situation I've experienced. Do better. read more

Had dinner there on Tuesday night. Tried the fettuccini with meat sauce. What??? I got watery marinara sauce and barely a spoonful. told them I ordered meat sauce. we made a deal ..3 meat balls instead. the meatballs were great the fettuccini was.... well terrible, No taste, watery. The cashier was too busy socializing with the guy in front & acted like I were interrupting when she finally rang me up. The only friendly person was behind the prepared foods counter--he asked the chef my question, & the chef gave him such an ugly look, like we both should've known the answer. Turns out the chef was wrong about the pasta salad dressing anyway. And the orange cranberry bread was too dry. This is no @Oak Grove Market in Atlanta's Oak Grove neighborhood. Seems to be the popular center of town spot to hit. Serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even has a bar that makes good old fashioned's. Stopped for breakfast today. They have fresh in house roasted coffee, grab and go farm to table goodies, fresh baked goods AND a cafe and pizzeria. We loved the breakfast so much we came back for pizza for dinner. We have been coming to Mountain Fresh for at least a decade, however this last trip was a serious disappointment. We stopped in Mountain Fresh on Sunday 10/12 around 10:20 to grab a bite before heading down the mountain. We got in the line at the Grill which was probably 20 people long (not to be unexpected). The guy in front of us was handed a card indicating he was the last breakfast order, and a employee let us and those behind us know that all behind him would not be able to order breakfast. This was no problem as we were okay to order off the lunch menu. We wait in the line and get to the front about 10:45 and the person at the counter asked what we would like. We begin to place our lunch orders and then are told we could only order bagels/danishes/muffins as the kitchen will be shutdown until 11 am to flip over for lunch. When the staff had told us earlier that the guy in front of us was the last breakfast order nothing was ever said about the gap in time, and if it was we would have exited the line at that point. Even if they would have taken the order and said it would be 20-30 minutes until the food would be ready due to the kitchen flip, we could have walked around and killed time however there was no apology or any remorse. I'm not sure if they expected us to just stand in line for another 15 minutes and then order but the entire process was a major let down and a hindrance to future visits. We had a 3 year old with us who was hungry and ready to eat so had this been told up front we would have exited the line and understood the process and adjusted plans but instead we wasted 25 minutes and then had to scramble and change plans. Disappointing to see as this was a family favorite for many years and a staple of our many trips each year to Highlands. read more

Wow!! Amazing!!! We were visiting the area for a girls' weekend and had a little cabin. We wanted to buy a premade meal to take back with us. It's pricey, but worth it. The food is homemade and delicious. The owner even talked with us and let us know they used family recipes. We got the meatloaf from the deli, the mashed potatoes, and a frozen pizza. We also got groceries ($9 for 2 sticks of butter-yikes!) and some bread. Everything was easy to make (instructions included). They also had a restaurant section that was very busy, so we'd love to come back again! The convenience of the food and grocery was really great. They also had a decent wine section that we would have spent more time in if we hadn't brought our own on the trip. It has everything you need and was welcoming and friendly. read more

Whether we're starting our day with a delicious breakfast, grabbing groceries for the week, or picking up their pizzas for dinner (a must every time!), we are never disappointed. The variety here is fantastic--they truly have everything we need, from fresh food and essentials to a few treats we didn't know we needed. And don't even get us started on the caramelized onion dip and house-made chips--absolutely to die for! You can't leave without them. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, making every visit a great experience. One of our favorite things to do is pull up to the bar and relax with a drink or two after shopping. It's such a nice addition that sets this place apart from your typical grocery store. We love the atmosphere and always look forward to coming back. People were friendly enough but why should I pay $3 more for a pack of crackers i can get elsewhere cheaper? I did notice a lot of folks getting fresh coffe and sandwiches. When the cook mis-reads the 16" order as a 10", don't justify the error... offer the 10" as an apology while the customer waits for the 16" they already paid for. There weren't many customers today... and we saw no one with pizza. We waited 20 mins only to be told about the error AND THEN we had to wait AGAIN for the 2nd pizza. We were walking through Highlands and wanted to grab lunch. We ended up at Mountain Fresh Grocery. They had everything from coffee beans and wine to fresh house-made food and charcuterie items. We walked over to the food counter and placed our order. After being handed a number, we snagged a picnic table outside. The food came out very fast! Hubby and I ordered a burger with hand-cut fries and a turkey, cranberry and havarti sandwich with house-made chips to share. Both were excellent and I couldn't pick a favorite. The burger was cooked perfectly medium and was very flavorful. It was simply topped with lettuce, cheese and special sauce, (we asked for no tomato). Great meaty tasting burger, soft bun, creamy and delicious special sauce - yum! The hand-cut fries were amazing! I love that they top their fries with salt flakes. The crispy potato skin pieces were the best. The turkey, cranberry and havarti sandwich was also very yummy. Moist sliced turkey, sweet cranberry relish and melty havarti cheese. We didn't get the arugula. The flatbread was toasty and held together well. The home-made chips were ridge cut and super crunchy. After lunch, we went back in to check out the wine selection. This place is a cute market in Highlands. The coffee shop inside is wonderful. I had the vanilla latte, and it didn't disappoint. The doughnuts are also tasty! The breakfast from the Mountain Fresh Grocery was average, we had the pancakes which were just like pancakes you would make at home. Along with the veggie omelette which had more feta cheese than omelette. The service was absolutely terrible. I stood at the counter while 4 high schoolers talked about getting drunk the night before while starring at me. Completely disappointed in the service. read more

Trader Joe's serves breakfast..just kidding... but that is what it would look like if they did. A little confusing when you first get in but we grabbed a bunch of tables for our group of ten and went and got in line. The menu is straight forward and the prices are what you would expect for the location. The big value is the french toast. Imagine a small loaf of bread quartered and made into french toast. My standard breakfast of eggs, hash browns, bacon, and a biscuit was ordinary. The biscuit was toasted but I really think it was just stale. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals and it actually came out pretty fast. If you are in Highlands NC and want to avoid the crowds on main street go to the east end, I think, and grab a bite here. While you are at it you can grab some amazing pastries at the bakery.....you won't regret it. read more

Having a hard time giving the "grocery" 3 stars. Lots of points to my review - so I am apologizing in advance if I get a little wordy. Let me start off saying, I've been going to the "grocery" for a long time when I am in town. Although, I haven't been in about 4-5 years. On a recent trip, i arrived at our home and needed to put together an easy dinner. I remembered the "grocery" having good pizza, deli items, and a nice selection of wine. Well, either my memory is fading or things have changed. As many know, highlands is a busy little town during the "season". I was so happy to find a parking spot right up front. We walked in and it was not as busy as I remembered. I'm sure I looked confused walking around - because I was. The store just didn't have the same vibe. Honestly, I didn't find it to be as clean as I remembered. There is a portion of the store that makes breakfast items. I am not reviewing that b/c I paid zero attention to it. I quickly looked at some of the items in the "deli" and kept walking. As for the wine: yes, they have an area dedicated to wine. Prices are moderate range to very expensive. I love my cabs- and I bought 3 bottles. But again, there was a limited selection unless I wanted to drop some serious coins. Pizza: the pizza store is accessible from the "grocery" and a door outside. The individual who took our order was very nice. The menu is on the wall next to the cashier. There are 2 sizes- 10" and 16". I ordered 3 pizzas - paid - and was given one of those vibrating buzzers to let me know when our order was ready. We opted to sit outside at one of the tables till our order was ready because there was not a lot of room in the pizza area. The pizzas survived the drive back to our house. Overall they were good a solid 3 stars. Still, I will not say great. The crust was crispy (a little tough) but the bottom was soft. To sum it up- #1) I would never call it "fresh market" #2) limited selections and expensive #3) needs a deep cleaning #4) don't know if I will ever go back read more
