Very good burgers. I got the groll (I think that was the name). Great flavors, well seasoned, delicious tomatoes pickles and onions and bread was fresh. Also got the fried mushrooms and those were great too. Four stars because it took a really long time to get the food (but at least it's fresh!) and the fries were good but not great. Wish they could refund my time for this horrible experience. Food was not good. Took 45 minutes for 2 burgers after they warned us it would be only 20. DO NOT BELIEVE THEIR LIES! Burgers were NOT good. Workers were moving at a glacial pace. McDonalds quarter pounder is a superior burger at a superior price. We got CHARGED FOR WATER. Staff very friendly. Asked if we wanted it to go or eat inside. She also said there's outside seating and it was a nice day for it. The Food was great. Fries were spot on.. and the bacon burger comes with chopped onions, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and thousand island. Was also asked if we wanted condiments. Burger Barn seemed to be THE stop for many hikers that were passing through, including me. I saw Burger Barn while on my way to the North Cascades and made a note to check it out after my long hike on the way back home. Located in Darrington, it's right off a major roadway that you drive through to get to the North Cascades area from the west. With that said, it was an easy stop for some grub while road tripping. I visited in the late afternoon on a Saturday and the place was busy with hikers. You order through a takeout window as they do not have indoor dining (and no public restrooms), but there's plenty of outdoor seating in the back and side of the eatery. If you're dining there, someone brings out your food to you. The menu had a long list of different burgers, fry baskets, milkshakes, etc. I ordered the logger burger, which had two patties and cheese with veggies and house sauce, a small seasoned fries with ranch and a brownie milkshake. Despite the influx of hikers getting food here, the food didn't take long to get. The burger wasn't bad, but not anything special. I was surprised to learn that the logger burger was served between a hoagie because I thought it was a stacked burger, but I guess that's why it's named logger. I did order it without onion and unfortunately, there was diced onion on the burger that I had to scrape off. At first, I was happy that the seasoned fries were waffle fries; however, when I ate them they were sooo salty. I couldn't even eat them because of how salty they were. Not worth the extra charge for seasoned fries versus plain fries. Of all the items, the milkshake was fantastic. I highly recommend the milkshake and since I had the brownie one, it had chunks of brownie, which I loved. For how pricey the food is, I can't say I'd come back. I'm always down to support a local business, but I found Burger Barn to be meh. read more

I love this place, it's exactly what you want when you're craving a juicy burger and fried food - the shakes and malts are really thick and perfect topper for the all American burger/fries/milkshake experience. Service is always friendly, there's some limited seating inside but lots of picnic tables. Everything is made to order - have had burgers, fish, baskets, and sampled every sauce. Can't go wrong here- but I'd recommend eating after rather than before any hiking. read more

The service was pretty average the first time I went and nothing changed the second. The ambiance I guess is alright, only because it's nestled into the beautiful valley that Darrington also shares. It was a nice day. Ambiance didn't matter, the mountains and scenery provided al the ambiance I needed. The burger was OK. It was really skimpy on the cheese, which looked painted on - the skimpiest slice of cheese I'd ever seen. I acutally opned up the bun to see if I coud see any cheese. There was some on part of the burger. It was American cheese. Of course. The service was pretty slow. I was the only customer, although two people drove up while I was waiting for my food and picked up call-in orders. I figured maybe that's why it took so long - maybe their grill is so tiny it can only cook one patty at a time, and they had to finish the others before they started mine? What really made me want to write a review though, is that they raised thier prices on the computer, but didn't even bother to write the new prices on the menu. I ordered the regular burger, which was listed af $9, but she charged me 10.09. Darrington has a 9.1$ sales tax, so she should have charged me $9.81. She said the menu was wrong, and the price should be $9.25, so that's why I was charged $10.09 She said the computer was changed by the previous manager, and the new manager didn't know how to change the computer price, and the new manager, who had only been there a few days, didn't have time to print up a new menu. There's just the one menu - they could have penciled in the new prices. I've never heard of a restaurant who not only charged a higher price than on the menu, but didn't even let me know, when I was discussing the prices with her before I ordered. I'm flabbergasted. The burger was OK - you're better off eating it than going hungry. read more

Used to really like this as a cheap middle of nowhere burger joint but the prices have skyrocketed and the quality has gone done. It's like $10 for a simple patty burger with no frills, right from the freezer to the grill. Made with no attention and no affection. Don't waste your time or money. I don't care to write reviews, so something has got to be pretty good (or bad) to compel me. Waited over 30 minutes for our food in a run-down, dingy, fly-infested room. I'm all for supporting local hamburger stands, so that didn't bother me too much. They managed to get all three items from our order wrong. No bacon on the jalapeño bacon burger, no juice with the kids meal, and a 16oz milkshake for the price of 20oz. I asked "is this a 20oz?" Because it looked small. She paused for a second and said "yep". Well, it's a 16oz cup. Even says so on the bottom. When I ordered it, the gal asks me if I'd like the 20oz. The menu doesn't list a size. Shame on me for not asking for the price. Now, I'm no math professor, but $7.95 for 20oz vs $5.50 for 16oz... 45% more for 25% more volume is not smart pricing. And that's if you even get the extra 4oz! Next time I'm hungry after a hike, I'll wait until Arlington for Stilly Diner or Nutty's. read more

After a long day in North Cascades NP our party was famished and out looking for some food on our way home. Burger Barn was the first restaurant we passed that was open (kinda hard to believe how fee restaurants there are, and how they were all closed up in the 30 miles between the park and Darrington--I hope they didn't go away because of Covid). There was a short line of patrons waiting when we pulled up but the line moved pretty quickly and we really didn't wait very long for our burgers, fries and shakes. Weather was excellent and there were picnic tables to sit at and enjoy the blossoming trees from on the front lawn. I don't know that any of the meal items necessarily knocked my socks off, but the food was hot, fresh, well-prepared and just the caloric intake I needed in order to make the long drive back to Tacoma tonight. It was also relatively affordable. For all these things, I'm grateful! read more

Stopped in for a burger on our drive back from North Cascades national park. Service was quick, food was hot, and the shake was delicious. This may be a weird thing to note, but the restaurant has a portapotty out back and I basically do whatever it takes to never use those because they smell so terrible. I didn't have another option and knowing we had several more hours in the car, I went for it. It was the best smelling portapotty I've ever been in. I was pleasantly surprised. Haha! I've only been once (yesterday). There seem to be some haters but my experience there was totally fine. I got a mushroom burger and some fries. It's a small operation, and wasn't super busy at the time, but I rang the bell and a very friendly person appeared from around the corner, took my order, and that was that. I sat at the collection of tables outside (which have great views of the surrounding mountains), and it wasn't long before someone brought about my food. The burger was... good. Not a life-changing experience but I was well satisfied. The fries were good too (and you get a lot of them... omg, I couldn't finish them all). A large group showed up while I was eating, and I noticed it took a bit to get their food, but I think there were only 2 peope working there (it was kind of late Sat afternoon at a weird time). So I guess the pace would be the only reason I don't give 5 star but... really, for what it is, I could go either way. This is a classic small town burger place. There is nothing fancy about the burgers, and yet their burgers are tasty. Stopped here for lunch with my wife. We were really hungry and looked forward to a huge meal. I got the Golly Whopper. Everything about the sandwich was excellent except the main protein, the beef patty. It was so so disappointing. It was a bland, flavorless, frozen, thin, crumbly beef patty that tasted worse than what you would expect at a gas station. I was so disappointed. That same sandwich with a fresh medium rare patty would be worth putting into a gourmet menu. If the owners are reading this, please consider changing that one component. My wife got the fried chicken sandwich. It was really good. Even though the chicken was pre-cooked and frozen, they flash fry it fresh and it was crispy, beautifully seasoned and spiced and overall a generous and fantastic sandwich. The fries were not bad. Over all the food was not bad and has the potential to be really great with a few changes. The portions are huge and well worth the price. I would love to stop here again and try the burgers and sandwiches if they decide to change that awful beef patty. read more

If I could give this place a no-star rating, I would. This place has gone downhill in quality over the years. $6.00 for a large fries. For that price I expected fresh cut fries similar to what Nutty's serves. But they were regular frozen kind. I had a jalapeño bacon burger, fries and a shake. The cost: $22!!! I'm sorry but for that price I would expect at least a made from scratch burger patty. These were obviously frozen. Another reason was that they close whenever they feel like it. If you're going to run a successful business, stick to regular hours. I get that this is a small town joint, but at these prices it's a wonder anyone can afford to eat here. I won't be going back. Stopped here on Labor Day, the place seemed pretty busy. I was maybe the 5th or 6th person in line, the picnic tables to the side were full, I got the impression people were calling in orders as well. So, likely slammed. I'm not sure how long I waited in line before I could order, but it took 55 minutes to get my food, which was 2 of their Deluxe combos, a grilled cheese, and a kids plain burger - not a big order, no ice cream or anything. Okay, the wait sucked but was it worth it? Nope - we drove 2 blocks to an open park, got out and ate, so we're talking less than 5 minutes after we received our food - burgers were lukewarm at best, fries were soggy, cold and clearly had been cooked some time ago based on their texture. We were hoping since we had waited so long that the food would at least be cooked to order and fresh, but that was not the case. Lastly, at no point did any employee tell a single patron there would be a wait, nor did they apologize to anyone about the wait. They brought out someone else's food, the guy had to ask if there was another order under the same name because it didn't look right, and the employee told him they ran out of pineapple so they subbed his pineapple shake for vanilla. Did not ask if this was okay, did not apologize, just told him what happened, handed him the food and then went back inside. I know they were slammed, but I imagine Labor Day is an annually busy day for a business like this in a place like Darrington, so I can't imagine they were caught off guard. But even if they were, the complete lack of customer service was the final straw for me writing this poor review. read more

Got here after a 6 day backpacking trip and everyone wanted a burger and this place delivered. Was busy in a Friday night of a holiday weekend but ordering went quickly then they delivered to us at a picnic table with a smile. All the workers pleasant and professional. Big menu. Everyone lives the burgers including Swiss Mushroom and cheddar bacon. The onion rings were disappointing with little meaty onion at all and that comment was from all so suggest a change in supplier. Fries looked ok. The large portion of fries or rings is very large and for sharing. Shakes were excellent. Prices reasonable. $30 for two people - burgers,rings,shakes and a water. Everyone was masked up. Quite the hot spot in a Friday night in Darington during Covid and for good reason. Would definitely return. One star off for the rings. read more

Stopped here on my way to Winthrop with friends. Wonderful service very friendly, decent food and milkshake. My complaint with this establishment is sanitation concerns. Working in the restaurant industry, I was honestly appalled to see the cook cooking with no gloves. They would touch raw meat then touch the buns and other items without even washing hands. The fact a cook would do this much less when the kitchen is in plain sight of customers is shocking to me. I know it is a small town establishment but such an oversight of sanitation laws and safety is concerning and I feel the need to warn others before they dine here. My hope is the owner will see this and make certain their employees are properly handling food. read more

Meh. Stopped on Memorial Day and had a Cheeseburger, fries and a Chocolate malted milkshake. Burger was okay- just pickles and a house sauce. It was nothing special- maybe some onions? tomato? lettuce? I don't know if I had to order them separately but they didn't come with. The fries were lukewarm and needed salt. just relocated to the area and thought burger .. not really but found a Swiss dip on the website menu. EVERYONE knows a dip is thinly sliced ribeye in au just. Obviously its totally escaped these people!! Start with I found no cheese on this at all and the meat was 2 hamburger patties so dry and hard you could barely bite it. The au jus was a dry pkg mix that was mostly hot water .. no flavor at all. I thought ok fries will have to do but those were way over cooked in an oil tasted like it hadn't been changed in 6 months!! Add insult to injury they charged almost 20.00 for what was trashed after 3 bites!!! NEVER AGAIN PEOPLE and would strongly advise .. DONT DO IT!! Delicious food and shakes and friendly service! Small town diner style food - I got the Swiss mushroom and onion burger and it was one of the best mushroom burgers I've had in a long time. My boyfriend got a bacon cheeseburger that was equally as delicious. Oreo shake and Reese's shake tasted classic and the ranch dipping for my fries is now one of my top favorites - not sure if they home make the ranch or not but it was tasty. Will definitely stop by here again on our drives through Darrington. read more

I love a mom and pop restaurant but this one I do not recommend ever! to start with when you walk in the floors and tables are gross looks like they've never been wiped down ever if you look over you can see right into the kitchen which I love watching my food be made but they where not wearing gloves and kept touching their phones and their hair while cooking without washing there hands gross and the kitchen is discussing Second the service is horrible the blonde girl with the glasses is unbelievably rude and all I got was a crispy chicken burger with pickles it's like asking for pickles ruined the rest of her life she was short and snippy with my and I always am polite to everyone so I just over looked it but it's still not okay I waited 45 minutes for my one burger and there was only one person in front of me and they only ordered 1 or 2 things by the time I got my food it was a cold and soggy tiny little burger with no pickles! And for the price I paid I expected at the least something a little bigger then what I got I was very disappointed i through it away I will never be back there this restaurant was fantastic before it switched ownership a couple years ago I wish the old owners still ran it read more

Chicken burger was OK at best. Hamburger - I definitely wouldn't order again / recommend. Incredibly expensive! And even if you are the only customer, 15 minutes wait for a simple order. Worst of all, though - none of the staff (cook, server) wearing masks.
