I've been meaning to try here since they opened. Hubby and I got their happy hour. When we told our teens where we were going, they showed up lol. We got shakes (mine boozy). Shake was incredible. I got the turtle shake cause some portion gets donated to PGH aquarium for turtles. The habanero wings were crispy and good, but small. The burger was underwhelming. There was little to no seasoning on anyone's burger or fries. There's one shot to make a good impression so we come back and repeatedly spend the $112.69 on my family at happy hour. I'm sad to report that we will likely not be back. The ambiance was phenomenal, and we liked our server, Crystal (?? I think. She was very nice and attentive). I had one of the best burgers ever here several years ago - maybe when it first opened. This past visit was disappointing. I ordered a beef burger, pink, with whole grain mustard and a fried egg. I confirmed with the server that I wanted it runny!! She nodded her confirmation. My daughter ordered a fried egg also and confirmed with server that she wanted it runny also. In addition we ordered the sea salt and herb fries. The eggs were hard cooked. So no velvety egg yolk streaming down and making a mess. There was no mustard and the burger was well done. In addition, we got regular fries. Why didn't I complain or send it back? Because I don't do that. We were with two young grand kids and I figure if that is that is how the chef wants to be remembered, who am I to argue. I just won't return. I stopped in here recently after spending my morning kayaking at North Park. I'm a Burgatory fan in general, but I have to say: coming here after a relaxing morning on the water just made the meal even better. So this Burgatory fan likes to mix things up from visit to visit. Sometimes I make a custom burger, but during this visit I just ordered right off the menu and got a Cha Cha Chicken burger. It was very good! Chicken with everything bagel seasoning, tomatoes and avocado, bacon, and a delicious sauce on a pretzel bun? What's not to like? I also ordered a cold brew mocktail; and while the cold brew/vanilla/caramel combo wasn't exactly the best to pair with the burger, it WAS the caffeinated boost I needed after kayaking. And it was super refreshing to sip while waiting for the main course. So it basically became a dessert beverage. I loved their outdoor seating area too - they had unzipped its plastic coverings so that a nice breeze was rolling through that section of Burgatory. And given that it's spring, it's the perfect time of year to enjoy the seasonal temperatures. Top off the delightful space and delicious food with the great service from the staff, and it all made for a pretty perfect lunch. I'd definitely swing by this Burgatory again! read more

This Burgatory is the go to for my grandkids and mom/dad when we visit Pgh. Milkshakes live up to their reputation, only do N/A ones. Good burgers of course but I like their Sonoma chopped salad and the kids menu tenders and/or grilled cheese plus crayons with games keeps the kids happy. Always seems crowded but almost never a long wait. read more

I got the Morty steakhouse burger. Burger cooked to a perfect pink temperature. The patty had a nice pepper crust and tasted delicious. The fried onions were a good topping on the burger which also paired welled with the grilled onions. A very thick and solid burger. The chips were house made and tasted good. I've visited Burgatory in the past and the food has never let me down, so I keep visiting when in the city. This place can get busy around dinner time, especially on Thurs-Sun, so a reservation or early dinner is the best way to beat the rush. I visited during the holidays, so it was pretty busy and it seemed they were short staffed but the service was still decent. We asked for flatware and our waiter said they were out and in the process of being cleaned, so that was a bit disappointing, as not even plastic utensils were offered. As for the food, the peanuts butter burger is a must-try. It had a little spice but nothing terrible. Entrees come with house chips or you can add French fries or other sides. We've been here many times over the years. Sadly, the experience has been going downhill each time. We walked in around 7PM and were seated in the patio area. The hostess stand had three staff but only one even acknowledged us and ended up having to crawl over the other host blocking her from getting out of the stand to seat us. Our waitress was great. We were slow to figure out what we wanted and she was very patient. We each placed custom burger orders using the selection slips. My burger arrived over cooked without any pink and was missing lettuce and onions. The fries were hot and very dry and not crisp. How do you goof up the condiments when it's written on paper right in front of you? So we had very little greeting and so so food for our $80 Burgatory dinner (with two beers each) when the Manager tells staff start to noisily stacking every metal chair and cleaning tables all around us all the while talking to these waiters/waitresses in a condescending manner. It was a little disconcerting. I said to the Manager when he was clearing a table near us, "It's almost like we aren't even here trying to enjoy our dinner." I was clearly ticked off. He tells me to take my time and they aren't pushing us out. I replied, "Are you kidding me?" He obviously was not understanding how loud and obnoxious it was to have all of this going on around us trying to enjoy our meals. Clue phone, it's for you. Don't seat people here if you're going to do this. It was pretty ridiculous. The bottom line is that you can't charge premium prices and give people a half assed meal and subpar treatment and expect them to come back. read more

The team from hostesses to bartenders and waitstaff are always perfectly friendly. Happy hour is a great if you are sitting around the bar...$7 apps, beers and cocktails. Beware of the booth seating in bar area. We have had happy hour honored by some staff and not others. Good deal if you get it. Now the food. It is average at best. They used to have really high quality burgers but something has changed. The beef is different for sure. The standard deluxe is my go to since they opened their first location...whatever I had yesterday was a pale comparison. The app menu has recently been updated. I normally love Burgatory- but the service here was beyond bad! After we were seated by the hostess, no one came to our table for about 15-20 minutes. We ended up going to the host to ask if we had a server. Frankly, we should have left at that point. Once we placed our order, the waitress never came back until they were delivering our food. We thought she'd be back in a few to see how things were...no. So we had to get up and find her so that we could request refills. I think she caught on that we were getting frustrated. She started coming back a bit more frequently to check on us. When it came time to pay, she confirmed how we wanted to split the bill and brought us the checks. Unfortunately, it was wrong. So we waited for her to come back.....no luck. So again, we had to get up to find her. The ONLY thing that saved this experience was that the food was good. They specialize, of course, in burgers, but they also are known for their milkshakes, and they also sell some appetizers and many alcoholic beverages. My husband and I ate lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. The hostess was polite and seated us at a clean table. Our waitress, too, was polite. We did not have to wait long for her to take our orders and to bring out our drinks and foods. Later, I did have to wave her over to get a drink refill. As for the food, my husband ordered a bison burger, and I ordered a wagyu burger. I appreciated that these different flavors were available. The taste of the burgers was good, but we did not think that the taste was good enough to justify the prices of $16 per burger. My husband's fries were nicely crispy and salty. On our last visit to Pittsburgh we stopped into Burgatory for dinner. The Elk Burger was so yummy and the Sangria so good we had to stop back in on our most recent visit! This time we ordered a round of Sangrias and tried the Fork It appetizer which came with fries smothered with short ribs, cheese curds, and gravy. Omg soooo good!! My husband ordered the Triple B which of course I tried and agreed with him that it was so good. The jalapeños were so spicy but I loved it! I ordered the Mortys Steakhouse burger. It was a great burger, excellent flavor and cooked perfectly. My FIL built his own Bison burger, which he raved about for the next few days! I've been to Burgatory several times and at several different locations. I go to the McCandless location the most often since it's the most convenient and right next to the Cinemark. I would not recommend their takeout because I've found it to be extremely different from their in person dining experience - burgers are overcooked, they mess up sides, once they forgot to put in my order and I waited 40 mins in store (I learned that their online system is not linked to their kitchen and that employees have to key in online orders which feels inefficient and clearly prone to human error - I'm hoping they are on a path to fix that!) Their in person dining food is way way better than their takeout though. Burgers are juicy, toppings feel fresh and I love the variety of sauces that they have. I usually make a custom burger but have also enjoyed order the Meat Your Maker burger and What the Fried Chicken sandwich in the past. Service in the restaurant is pretty good, they are quick even when they are really busy. The restaurant itself is okay. The tables are always sticky and the floor gets really dirty. One of the tables I sat at near a window had a full cobweb there with a live spider crawling around! I kept an eye on the spider the entire meal since I was a little rattled (it was a packed night so I felt bad asking to be moved and it wasn't the server's fault). In person dining is really good (though not as good as I felt it was a decade ago!) but the poor takeout experiences, and condition of the restaurant are what caused me to take off two stars from this review. read more

I walked in with high expectations, based on friends reviews and the name itself. Our server was super friendly and when we told him it was our first time there, he took the time to review the menu. Milkshakes on the front page stood out so that's where I started. A caramel pretzel milkshake sounded perfect, and it actually was. It was piled high with whipped cream and was even served with a little extra in a stainless steel cup. Ahhhhhhhhh! The menu has a nice variety, but obviously burgers are the main event. They have burgers made with a variety of proteins like bison, elk, etc. I opted to build my own burger and there were so many choices to add that in the end I wasn't sure what it was going to taste like. I also order the herb and sea salt fries. The food came out quickly and I soon learned I had made a mistake not getting some pink in my burger. The burger was so dry, it wasn't very good. Even with the caramelized onion sauce on it, it was bland and tasteless. Also, the fries were frozen fries with no sea salt or herbs on them. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed. Maybe it was my choice of a burger, I can't be sure, but the milkshake would have been a 5 star review, but my burger and fries was so tasteless that I had to knock off several stars. Atmosphere - Great. The restaurant Gleason a modern pub feel to it. There are plenty of tables inside and outside there is an open air patio with about 10 tables. The place can get pretty loud when full. Service - Good, not great. We arrived prior to the evening rush and our server was very friendly and attentive. However, as time went on our server pretty much disappeared. Food - Disappointing. The good/great? The milkshake. There is a great milkshake menu that even offers shakes with alcohol. I had a chocolate and peanut butter shake and it was awesome. The bad/disappointment? The burger. I ordered a cheeseburger medium. It is one of the most overrated cheeseburger that I have ever been served. The size was decent and the bun fresh. However the burger itself was presented medium-well and was so dry as to have virtually no flavor. Overall - MEH. I paid an extraordinary amount of money for a burger that would not stand up to a diner burger. When we arrived, we were greeted by a couple of very nice hostesses. We were promptly seated and this is where things went south. About 20 minutes after we were seated, our waitress finally came around. Apparently, they thought the section was closed, but there were other customers around us. Fortunately, we all knew what we wanted, so we ordered. Our drinks and appetizers were delivered quickly. And shortly after, our meals arrived. Everything was very good, no complaints about the food, I do recommend. But we were missing some things. I actually had to get up and search for our waitress. No one ever came around to check on us. I'm just hoping this was a bad night and not just the norm. Hopefully if you go, you will receive better service. For myself, I probably will not be going back. read more

The burgers were decent, and I love that we were able to customize it with a variety of toppings. However, it did take a very long time for our meals to come out and it was lukewarm when it did arrive. We were surprised because there was a ton of staff working that day. The restaurant AC was cranked super high to the point where we were physically uncomfortable and didn't want to stay. The Elk Gone Wild burger is unusually spicy, which is delightful. Gouda cheese is a nice change over Cheddar and completely works. The Elk is lean and flavorful, and all together rounds out this unique menu choice. The staff is friendly, for example, cheerfully adding the Pirates game at my request. There was a bit of confusion, perhaps mine, when I ordered slaw on the side, and it came as a substitution for the chips. It was all rather awkward, with no offer to remedy, however I'll know better next time. The craft beer on tap is thought-provoking and satisfying. There are plenty of seating options, booth, table, bar or high-top. Plenty of free parking, go for it. read more
