Pretty good. Vegan Ethiopian with all the amazing flavor I'm used to, but without the Goat, which I love....but this was still a good meal.

This spot came highly recommended by my friend and their spouse, so I was excited to try it out since I really enjoy Ethiopian food. You know it's a good sign when a restaurant focuses on one thing, and here it's Beyaynetu. The four of us ordered the feast for three, which turned out to be more than enough food. I also got a mango juice, my friend ordered an espris, and their spouse had a hot bunna. While I'm not a coffee drinker, I love the smell of it, and the bunna smelled amazing. The mango juice tasted fresh, like a good puree, but I do wish it had been served over ice because it warmed up quickly and I prefer juice cold. The food came out fairly quickly, and it was incredible. I tried everything and had zero complaints. The injera was outstanding -- tangy, light, and sturdy enough to scoop everything up without falling apart. Every dish was flavorful on its own, but also blended beautifully together. I usually lean toward protein-heavy meals, but this was a vegetarian feast that left me completely satisfied without once wishing for meat. Honestly, I left feeling full and happy, and a little sad that this restaurant isn't closer to me because I'd go all the time if it were. We ended the night with two pieces of baklava, and unfortunately this is where the rating dropped from a 5/5 to a 4/5. The baklava was a big miss. The plate came out swimming in a dark brown syrup, and there was more syrup than pastry. I've only ever had baklava with a clear honey syrup, so this was surprising. The pastry itself was dense and tough to cut into, with no flakiness -- more like one solid block of dough. The filling didn't seem to have pistachios; instead it tasted like raw walnuts mixed with brown sugar. Combined with the heavy syrup, it was far too sweet and overly heavy, which made it unenjoyable. Overall, the feast itself was excellent and something I would happily come back for again and again. But I would skip dessert here, as the baklava was disappointing and felt like an afterthought compared to the quality of the main meal.

First time trying Ethiopian food and I'm glad it was at Bunna Cafe because this place was stellar! Absolutely loved the ambiance, service, and most importantly the food. They start you off with a free plate of popcorn to snack on while you wait for your food which was so fun. Also, I happened to be in during their weekend Bunna Coffee Ceremony so I had a complimentary cup of the Bunna. It was very strong, spiced, and rich, with a prominent ginger undertone. Adding in the brown sugar cubes opened up the flavor so much. Delicious! I tried the Lentil Sambusas which were super crispy. The filling inside was fine but adding on that cilantro lime sauce really tied it all together! There was a subtle spice too that I enjoyed. For my main I went with the Beyaynetu Meal which was the 5 scoop option. I kinda wanted to go for the 7 scoop Feast to try more things but I'm glad I didn't because the 5 scoop was very sizable for one person! I tried the Enguday Tibs, Shiro, Misis Wot, Yater Kik Alicha, and the seasonal option which was an Eggplant and Walnut Deberjan. WOW!!! Everything was so insanely flavorful and worked well with each other. I think my two favorites were the Shiro and the Yater Kik Alicha. Soooooo so so good I could eat a whole bowl of just those.

Loved the feast for 2, it's a great deal. Service was great and the ambiance was a vibe. Will definitely be back

We happened to visit between 5-6pm on a Sunday which is when they are doing the coffee ceremony. They usually have this 5-6pm Friday to Sunday. The service is complimentary - the coffee is SOOO good. I love how they add a bit of ginger and there are sugar cubes if you don't like your coffee black. I love bitter and roasted coffee so I was absolutely a fan of what was served. They also serve popcorn as snack on the side. The low lighting ambiance was lovely and peaceful. This place is fully vegetarian so there are no meat options. You can pick different sizes depending on how many entrees you want for the beyaynetu. We picked the "feast" option which comes with 7 entrees of your choice. The portions for each entree is like a small fist size. You can also order the entree a la carte but I personally love beyaynetu because of the variety. Everything was delicious!! There's not one that I disliked. If I had to pick one, shiro was probably my favorite. I highly recommend trying this place out if you've never had Ethiopian food before.

Very first time trying Ethiopian food in Bushwick, Brooklyn! Finally got there around 4pm it was a quiet time- it was so nice and very neat, cozy and warm environment. The menu is so unique I love how it looks! And I enjoy them all that I got in a beautiful plate. 5 kinds is a great deal! I really loved "Gomen" and "Keysit Selata"! Honestly it was a great experience having my hand roll with Injera flatbread. All amazing and kind people! I already want to go back!

i will always love bunna. when i lived in brooklyn, i would visit this place all the time. it was so nice to visit again after all these years and they are still offering the same amazing quality of food! definitely worth visiting if you are in the neighborhood or not. ethiopian cuisine is both filling and nutritious! there is nothing like getting your veggies in but they are deliciously amazing!! please visit if you are on the fence, and thank me later. bonne appétit

SERVICE - located in Brooklyn at the border of east Williamsburg and bushwick in an not as popular neighborhood - quaint interior with dim lighting makes it feel homely and intimate - live music on certain day evenings - walk in only - no wait on a weekend evening though restaurant is quite full - ambiance good for semi casual meal - friendly and attentive service MENU - ethiopian vegetable and lentil stews to be ordered as a platter or a la carte - all vegan/vegetarian - average price ($25 per person) FOOD - feast for 2 (9/10): two scoops of all nine side dishes, perfect for sharing between two people. The thing that stood out to me the most was the difference in flavors between dishes. They varied in levels of spice and warmth which made tasting each one an experience. I would highly recommend getting the dishes in a platter like this to try them and combine ones that you like. The one dish that was a bit of a letdown was the kale. I wish the kale was more cooked or had more seasoning on it as it tasted very raw and bitter compared to everything else. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes! One of the best ethiopian meals I have been to in New York

YUM!!! The mixed platter was so great. Highlights were the beets, the lentils, and the chickpeas/split peas (can't remember what they were). Great vibe inside

Payed for 7 flavors, 1 extra injera, 2 orders sambusas
O B.

Ordered takeout through grubhub, half my order was missing, very disappointed, food was good though. But wouldve been nice to have everything i ordered. I ordered the feast combo and 2 orders of Sambusas for my boyfriends birthday. So excited to surprise my boyfriend with a delicious meal when i open the bag and come to find out half my order was missing. The feast combo comes with 7 flavors, i only received 5 flavors. I payed for 2 orders of sambusas and only received one order. I also ordered an additional bread which i did not receive. Very unhappy with the service. Felt a bit like they wanted me out the door as soon as i got there even though it was only 9:30 and they close at 10:00 and it was a takeout order. Food was tasty though. Wouldve been really nice to have everything i payed for though. Thanks to grubhub i did get money back for what was missing.

If you love veggies and a meal that will leave you satisfied Bunna is the place to try. They have plenty of of options and flavors to explore. The staff is friendly and helpful with any questions regarding the food and spices. Came here at around 6pm on a Saturday and while there was no wait the only option was to dine at the bar because all tables and outdoor seating were at capacity. Dining at the bar was a nice option because it was still quite spacious and private for your conversations to carry without disturbing others at the bar. They do have a cocktail menu but I do find the prices on the higher end for not much of a strong quality to their drinks, I recommend sticking to a glass of wine which is the better option for your pocket. The feast for two is a great value and will also be good for a party of three as my sister and I had a hard time finishing the entire meal.

Espris - Juice w/ 3 layers (mango, papaya, and avocado)
Sarah A.

A vegetarian friend of mine took a few of us here because it's one of his favorite places to order take-out from. I am not vegetarian, but I am also not picky. I eat my veggies and love to try new foods! It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and it just wasn't for me. I got the Beyaynetu "meal" which comes with one scoop of 5 items. It comes with sourdough flatbread called injera and you're supposed to use your hands to rip a piece of the injera and grab the veggies with it. The flavors were unique, but not something that appealed to me that I would like to have often. I am glad I tried it though! I also got the Espris drink which consisted of 3 juices (mango, papaya, and avocado). I was really looking forward to this drink, but it wasn't very sweet and it was not cold at all, no ice or blended ice. I think they just blended the fruits that were sitting out and just poured it in the cup. Staff was nice and place had a lot of seating and it was dimly lit. There is a bathroom in the back and there are 2 sinks outside the bathroom where you can wash your hands before you eat!

Feast for 3 Combo

Omggg so good. Came here with a group of four for dinner and we got the feast for three (pictured), lentil sambusas, and extra injera. Everything was sooo delicious and flavorful and we totally cleaned our plate. The restaurant also has such a nice ambiance and the staff is lovely! Also super reasonably priced for a ton of filling and yummy food. Highly recommend, and also love their brunch!

We really enjoyed the Thiebou Jen, while the fish had some bones they were manageable and the flavors were on point. The dish does come with a pepper on the side, but beware she is a heavy hitter and not for the faint of heart. So happy we had the plantains as well, they were a perfect compliment to this main dish. Cocktail was the Last Last, a delightful take on the Last Word and extra points here for the creativity of the name. The reviews looked great and I've never had Senegalese food before so was very excited to try. The restaurant was pretty quiet when we arrived. It was one of those open air restaurants where the exterior walls/windows fully opened to let in fresh air. it was nice to feel like we were dining outside and enjoying the fresh air, but still being seated indoors. The menu looked good and had a bit of everything for everyone. We got the fried calamari and the Thiebou Jen, (which was stewed red snapper & vegetables over jollof rice, and listed as the National plate of Senegal). The red snapper was good, but the portion felt very small given the price. Even the calamari portion felt small given what we paid. The jollof rice was well seasoned as it soaked up all the braised broth and seasoning. There was a spicy sauce that we weren't too privy to and accidentally stirred it in, but it was still tolerable. We ordered beignets for dessert and they were pillowy and soft. The only reason why I gave it 3 stars is because we felt the service was lacking. It felt like we were constantly ignored. When we tried to look around and get the waiter's attention to order or to ask for something, they looked like they were just scrolling on their phones by the bar / kitchen area rather than being attentive. Or when we'd try to get their attention after they tended to the table next to us, they just continued walking past and didn't even acknowledge us or come back shortly to check in. Even getting the check to pay took almost 15 minutes.

I always get a combination dinner. This time I tried the Siga Wett beef stew with Ethiopian spices - very delicious! Spicy but not too spicy. Ethiopian food can be addictive, years ago I was definitely into eating a lot of Ethiopian. New York City has some great Ethiopian. If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. Overall, my favorite dish from the combination platter was the Shiro Wett. It had a light touch of smokiness that went really well with the beans. Very filling and delicious with the injera. I wish they offered fitfit salad - the menu has Ethiopian tomato salad but there are no photos of it on the online menu. There are photos of some of the other menu items but not all. I think they'd sell more stuff if there were photos since not everyone is familiar with all of the various dishes. Just a thought.

We noticed their rating and it gave us a bit of pause, but we ultimately decided to give it a shot out of curiosity. We got there right before they were supposed to open, and we saw a staff member inside setting up around the restaurant and behind the bar. About 5 minutes after the hour, they opened the door (just a tad late), and we were their first guests. We were greeted and told we could sit wherever we wanted. There were a bunch of cats up as decor, for Halloween decor I imagine. I observed some really nice frames hanging up and a lovely mantle arrangement. And I saw a sign for happy hour that occurs on some days, we love that! Their menu has some creative cocktails, mocktails, and unusual ingredients. And of course, they have the classic veggie platters that we love to try. We got the plate for 4, picked out items, and got to work. Everything tasted fantastic, truly. We had fresh injera, and it was easy to make out what each item was. The menu advertised the beets as also having potatoes, which we immediately realized were missing -- turns out the menu needs to be updated haha, they aren't supposed to be included anymore. All this to say, we had a great time there. And there's only one thing I could add that's different here compared to other Ethiopian restaurants: the portions are definitely smaller. If I had a plate like this anywhere else, I would've been overstuffed. I wasn't still hungry though, I was satisfied. But if you have a lot of room in your stomach usually, the smaller portions may disappoint. But as for me, I'd totally return.

Since we've never had Senegalese food, the decision to go there was no brainer. The interior of the restaurant looked like an art gallery, with paintings, carvings, handicrafts and photos from Western Africa. An old man (the owner?) received us. He recommended several vegetarian options for me, but I already had my heart set on the Okra stew. He then asked if I wanted Okra Tofu? I asked him if people in Senegal consumed Tofu? He said no, but customers had requested it, so they put it on the menu. (Who comes to a Senegalese restaurant and asks for Tofu?) I told him to not give me anything outside an authentic Senegalese diet. A few minutes later he came out of the kitchen to tell me that there was not enough okra stew left to form a main dish, but he'd offer whatever was there as a free side dish for me. So I went with his suggestion of Mafe Legumes (vegetables stewed in peanut butter sauce), while husband asked for the Senegalese national dish of Tiebou Jeun (baked fish). For the accompanying starch, I chose Funio, the Western African staple grain (again introduced by this wise old man). We also ordered Nem Legumes - vegetable spring rolls (I'd call them samosas :-)). Husband asked for a ginger drink. The ginger drink tasted like pure ginger juice (sweetened a bit of course) - it would certainly cleanse one's palate and warm one's stomach. The Nem Legumes were nice, but the winner was the stewed tomato dipping sauce that came with them. Our main dishes were served on large dinner plates. The portions were so substantial that I ended up packing half of my stew home, after stuffing myself unusually full already. There were chunks of yam, carrots and cabbage on my plate, flavored in a creamy and well-seasoned peanut butter sauce. But the winner was still the Okra stew - spicy, tangy, tasty. I also stole some Joloff rice off my husband's plate. It was another surprisingly delicious treat! His fish looked like a portion of a big carp, with quite a bit of bones to pick out (we don't mind fish bones, having been well trained in certain Asian cuisines :-)) Our bill, presented by a young waitress, came in a little basked covered by the broad hem of an African lady in a beautiful dress. The old man passed out table and said "oh yes she collects for us." For a meal of one appetizer, two mains, and a drink, the price was super reasonable!

You can also definitely get lunch here- yeah dawg (vegan hot dogs), tacos, empanadas etc. There are usually clothing/accessories vendors as well. If you go on the vegan shop up website (https://veganshopup.wordpress.com/) there is always a list of vendors! Pine box rock shop is a little small and it gets very crowded. They also card you as it is a bar, fyi- so probably not kid-friendly! Some vendors take credit card but some are cash only, so make sure you have CASH! I definitely recommend this for vegans and those interested in the vegan lifestyle to explore yummy vegan food and merchandise, and to support local vendors/ small businesses.
