Came here due to my go to Pho place being closed for the day. I was craving Pho and had to have it. When I tell you the Pho I ordered was Sooo GOOD! Everything was VERY fresh and flavorful, with yummy'ness in every bite! I'm going to be honest I wasn't expecting the food to taste like this. How the restaurant is set up is a little different than most Pho places I've been too. You order and pay first then you choose your seat. The service was good, there was someone checking on me and filling my glass of water back up every 20 mins or so. This restaurant is the last restaurant in Kansas City before we head to airport. We find this restaurant due to high stars rating. This is mom and pop shop. The owner takes the order and the other owner prepare the food. Food has some wait because we have a big order in front of us. We got the combo beef pho. It comes with slice raw beef, brisket and beef ball. The pho is just average. They don't have tripe and tendon. The other dish is spicy beef noodle. This dish has more meat and ham. Wow! I'd never tried banh mi, and I didn't know what to expect. I honestly didn't think I'd like it because I'm not very into sandwiches. But this sandwich from Bun Mee Phan was absolutely delicious. The chicken was flavorful and juicy, and the condiments and cilantro made the whole thing really pack a punch. Only downside was it was incredibly messy - definitely not something you'd want to eat in the car! I also wish the sandwich came with a small side, to make it more of a meal. The restaurant itself, although simple in presentation, was impeccably clean and tidy. Everything looked freshly painted. The tables looked new and were perfectly arranged. Banh mi special, $7.50 - I think half of what makes a delicious banh mi is the bread and this wasn't it. The bread was crispy, but it wasn't airy or fluffy, and the crust didn't flake. This made me realize how good I had it back in California. The pickled carrots were kind of mild and not very pickled, but the basic taste of a banh mi was there. I'd recommend this. Spicy beef noodle (aka bun bo hue), $11 - This wasn't spicy at all until you add in their chili oil on the side, which is fine but not what I'm used to. This didn't have the strong flavor I associated with bun bo hue, so while it was decent, I wouldn't order this if you're expecting bun bo hue. Without the chili oil, it's mild, which I prefer. Pho beef, $11 - Good portions and taste, but I could literally make this at home. From the dark brown separation of the broth, I'm guessing they use a powdered flavor mix. Nothing wrong with that because the flavor is good. It's just...I could buy the powder from a supermarket and make it at home (which I probably now will, honestly). I ordered 2 sandwiches on a Thursday night. I got the special (dac biet) and a grilled beef sandwich. The special sandwich came out juicy and good. The only complaint is the jalapeños were sliced pretty thick and hard to actually enjoy. The grilled beef was chewy and not something I would get again. Simple family restaurant serving sandwiches, noodle, and rice dishes. They are best known for their banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich made with French bread and various fillings. Their sandwiches were very good!!! However, the size of the sandwich was a little different than what I'm used to. For $6, I would've expected a few inches more on the sandwich, but it was still within a reasonable range. Another difference that I noticed (from what I'm accustomed to) was their deluxe sandwich was made with roasted Chinese pork instead of the cold cut version that I like, but still delicious. I've had better pate and richer eggy mayo too- But just because the sandwich was different in style from how I like it it doesn't mean it was a bad sandwich. They also have taro and pandan waffles which I would recommend for a semi sweet treat. Overall a great sandwich. I think it's time for a Bun Mee Phan update! Now with 27 check in's under my belt, the business in a different location, a major personnel change and 4 1/2 years later - my original enthusiastic 5 star review needs to be modified to a long term solidified 5 star review. Bun Mee Phan is my go to for many a weekend carry-out Pho. The BBQ pork is both my wife and I's favorite although the Chicken Curry in coconut milk is a favorite to grab on my way to work on colder days; nothing better than dipping a fresh baguette into the sweet and spicy broth! The pork belly tacos are still a regular go to when soup is not on my list for the day. Great friendly owner that is doing her best to keep the doors open and keep everyone safe. This small space tucked into a small strip mall is, hands down, one of the best sandwich shops in town. The key is the restaurant's liberal use of fresh vegetables. Like right out of the ground fresh vegetables (hello Jalapeno!) that are piled high in heaping amounts. I recommend the pork sandwich (add an egg,) but I don't think there is a bad choice. I also recommend the beef spring rolls. Like the sandwiches, the rolls are liberally sized and packed full of veggies and served with a small container of peanut sauce. They're the perfect appetizer. The menu also includes rice and noodle dishes as well as soups and currys. We consider BMP one of the best in the Northland for pho and curry. The ambiance and decide is simple and clean, which we like. I am so torn about this review. I took my family to Bun Mee Phan because of the awesome reviews, but I was really disappointed. Here is what my family ordered (and their ratings out of 10 in parenthesis): Brother - Beef Pho (4.5/10) Mother - Shrimp Spring Rolls and Combination Special Dac Biet Banh Mi (4/10) Boyfriend - Vermicelli Bowl with Egg (4/10) Me - Tofu Dau Hu Banh Mi (6/10) The biggest let down was probably the lack of flavor in most of their food. The sauces they provided seemed like watered down Mae Ploy with a bit of fish sauce. I'm used to punchy flavors of sweet, sour, and savory from Vietnamese food! The Banh Mis were supposed to have pickled carrots, but ours did not seem like they had been pickled at all. The only pros to this meal were the baguettes, which seemed super fresh, and the pate/butter mixture used on the Banh Mis. Would I go back? Potentially. I think it's worth going back to try their Banh Mis one more time to see if the misses we had were just a fluke. Wish I could give a higher rating, but not at this time. read more

I visited early on a Thursday evening, ordering a bowl of beef pho to warm my soul on a frigid winter evening. We ordered at the counter, and after finding a seat, hearty bowls of pho and condiments were brought to us. Here, there are no sauces on the table-you are issued a small cup with both hoisen and hot sauce together. While not my absolute favorite pho, this pho was served nice and hot, hearty, and rich in flavor. It was pretty cold in the dining area, not very clean, and the music--one song was playing on repeat the entire time . I love Vietnamese food because it's packed with flavor and herbs and aromatics. Bun Mee Phan has managed the unbelievable of making Vietnamese food BLAND and disgusting. We ordered a Boba tea, the noodle bowl and the spring rolls (both dishes pictured) and received two dishes with identical ingredients: a pile of slimy completely unseasoned noodles, the cheapest iceberg lettuce, UNPICKLED plain carrots, plain cucumber and a sprig of cilantro. I spent $30 on a giant pile of slimy noodles and plain vegetables and a drink. There was NO FLAVOR. We drove 30 minutes to eat here and will have to get French fries on the way back to the hotel because no one wanted to eat the bland noodles. My daughters said microwave ramen would have been better and I'd have to agree. Really disappointed and feeling ripped off. read more

First time here. Almost passed it on North Oak Trafficway. Thank goodness for Siri. Walked in and was immediately greeted by the order taker. I let them know it was my first time. She was very helpful to make suggestions for lunch. We opted for the chicken pho, lemongrass chicken and rice plus the lemongrass chicken spring roll. To drink we ordered the Vietnamese coffee and mango boba tea. After paying we were seated and the food was brought out to our table. The wait staff checked on us a couple of times. I flew into the area for work. I heard from a co-worker that it's really fresh and good food. I decided on my last day in town to stop by and try it. I had the pork belly sushi roll. It was amazing!! I want to fly back just to eat that wonderful tasty sushi burrito. Look at my pic and tell me you wouldn't want to eat it.... It looks like a hole in the wall restaurant but which is a jem. Everything is absolutely delicious tonight, made me remember how much I like their Spicy Beef Noodle soup. The broth was rich with lemongrass, spicy and savory, served over thick rice noodles. Perfect for an icy day like today. It comes with a side of spicy sauce so you can adjust the flavor and also shredded cabbage, bean sprouts, lime and some thai basil. We also got shrimp spring rolls as well. You get 3 large rolls in one order. The inside had vermicelli and veggies along with shrimp, serve with their peanut sauce. It was very good. My brother and his wife got the caramelized pork chop platter, they really enjoyed as well. That came with a pork chop, a fried egg, vietnamese quiche, side of fresh veggies and a sweet chili sauce. It was nice to look at as well. This is my first time dining in at Bun Mee Phan, I usually so take out. I will definitely dine in more often now. The Atmosphere: Located in a lonely strip mall right after a fork in the road. Blink and you may miss it type of situation. Walk in and there's just plain chairs and tables lined up against the windows aligned with the entrance/exit door. The pay counter is at the opposite wall. The kitchen is visible from chest or neck up, depending on your height. Not fancy at all. The Service: Friendly on the phone and friendly at the counter. The Food: Banh Mi Dac Biet - 3/5 The bread was too dense versus a light and airy baguette that it should be on. The veggies were skimpy and the meats were just okay tasting, not the best but not the worst. But the bread definitely needs work. On some of the sandwiches, the bread was even rock hard. Banh Mi Lemongrass Chicken - 1/5 Bread was rock hard. The lemongrass chicken or whatever it was supposed to be was mostly mush, therefore inedible. It was quite disgusting. I don't know what was happening with it. The first two bites were okay. The veggies were okay. The cucumbers are cut circular which seems like they just cut it that way for all their dishes to save time. They should know that for banh mi, it's best to cut it the long way. The 1 for the veggies and the first two bites were actually regular chicken pieces and that's it. For being what it's supposed to be. The rest was nasty and mush. Had to throw it out. Also, service took a reallyyyyy long time to complete these orders. Patrons who came in after us were getting their food before us and we ordered mostly sandwiches. The Banh Mi sandwich was extremely tasty and very very cheap, not to mention the very friendly service. It was on extremely crispy bread and I really enjoyed it. It was a lot better than the one I had in Des Moines. Same could be said about the girl I made out with in KC. Ohhhhhhhhhhh. I got the strawberry mango because they told me to. That also was really tasty. I usually do what I'm told, especially by people who can make Banh Mis this well. The bubbles were squidgy but I enjoyed it. They made it with milk and I think powder but it was still tasty - next time I'd get something without milk, I think. It was very creamy. But one constant no matter what else we've tried is the chicken curry soup. It's amazing, and the best in town that I've encountered. We don't live in the area, so we keep it in mind as an option when one of us is returning from the airport - which, as it turns out, makes everything happier. Jet-lagged after 30 hours of flights? Chicken curry soup. Delayed in Chicago Midway because of reasons that defy sense and decency? Chicken curry soup. Has walking through one of those dreadful terminal restaurants swimming with legions of inescapable, blinking iPads stolen your joy and hope for a peaceful future? Chicken curry soup. And that's worth five stars. And, since you're reading this, giving a try. The place is humble and simple, the rest of the menu is more hit than miss but not infallible, and the counter service is straightforward and perhaps spartan at times. Great flavors, simplified menu, but in my experience with eating out this almost always equates to a great food experience and this place is no exception to that. I could tell this place was gonna be lacking when they brought the pho out and the broth was brown in color . Spicy lemon grass chicken was too salty and not spicy at all . Everything was overly sweet or overly salty . Ube waffle was dense but had good flavor . There's way better places in KC for good pho, only came here because they had bahn mi, which wasn't assembled well, and the pork was again, too sweet . The best thing I ordered was the iced coffee. Oh , my baby broke a tiny bowl while we were here . The owner never came to check on us , but had the AUDACITY to run out chasing me telling me to "pay for the bowl we broke". I refused . She then came running outside to take a picture of my vehicle. I really don't know why this place has a high rating . If I could leave 0 stars I would . Everyone has been talking about how great Bun Mee Phan is so I had to go see for myself. They were right! My friend and I got a few things to share and try. We got the Xiu Mai (Meatball) and Bo Nuong (Grilled Beef) Banh Mi and and order of Shrimp Spring Rolls. As we ate, the taste took me back to my days working in the San Francisco Financial District and the basement food court in one of the buildings and a Vietnamese food booth that was simply amazing. I never thought I would find Vietnamese that good outside of the West Coast and I truly have. The Xiu Mai was outstanding. The bread perfect and the meatballs tender and juicy worked perfectly with the veggies on the sandwich. Same with the Bo Nuong. The Spring rolls. First thing to know Vietnamese Spring rolls are nothing like Chinese ones. They are not fried. They were incredible and every bit as fresh and vibrant as the ones I am used to. A couple of bonus notes I found, I can buy my original genuine Sriracha from them at a good price and they serve Cafe Du Monde Chickory coffee. The greatest bonus were the people were friendly and for making a product fresh to order, were really fast. I truly owe these folks because they will save me airfare to San Francisco now. ;-) read more
