My brother-in-law was visiting and wanted steak for dinner. I found the Bullshead Restaurant was not far from my son's apartment in San Francisco. We arrived, and right away I saw the steaks and burgers in the front refrigerated case and knew we were in for a treat. We started with beer - I was glad to try the Font Point Pilsner - right from Crissy Field in San Francisco. We all ordered steak and chose the salad bar as our side (2 of us had fries, and 2 opted for the rice pilaf). The salad bar is one of those with some 20+ choices, and I was delighted. I hadn't had one of these in a long time (and the flavors did not disappoint). I thoroughly enjoyed my 8oz Filet Mignon, ordered Medium. My wife ordered Medium Rare, and it was more cooked than it should have been. The other two in our party opted for the New York Steak and said they really enjoyed theirs as well. I read other reviews who said they also loved their burgers - whether beef or their unique Buffalo burgers (and Buffalo steaks as well). Service was attentive and polite. My wife and I - fans of the almighty hamburger as we are - ventured into Bullshead restaurant one recent Sunday afternoon. They are located in the West Portal district of San Francisco. Well-known for their steaks and hamburgers, our hope was to find that go-to place for a serious burger. Located adjacent to the MUNI station, the restaurant appears on the surface to have seen better days. The darkish atmosphere lacks modern conveniences like bright lights and new carpet. It was obvious though from the amount of patrons we encountered, that people don't come here for the decor but the more importantly, the food. Bullshead has an impressive selection of burgers. They have chuck steak hand formed patties, turkey, buffalo, garden, fish, chicken, and a whole host of toppings to customize your meal. Burgers are cooked over an open flame, come served with lettuce, tomato and onion and include your choice of fresh cut fries, potato salad, coleslaw or soup. Onion rings can be had for $1.00 extra. My wife ordered the Bacon & Cheese Chuckburger medium-rare, while I chose the Challenger Chuckburger, their largest offering, cooked the same way. It's always good to hear the wait staff ask how you'd like your burger cooked. Tends to give one affirmation that they're serious about their burgers. It took a bit of time for our order to be prepared but we didn't seem to mind too much. It's Sunday and we were there to take it all in. Our burgers finally arrived on a steel skillet that resembled something you used to see at a Sizzler's. Definitely old-school. Now the important stuff....breaking down the meal: French fries - a bit on the soggy side and tasted a bit like fries you get at In-N-Out. In my opinion they would have tasted better if they had stayed a bit longer in the fryer. Good news though is that the potatoes tasted fresh with nary a hint of being of the frozen ilk. Buns - I was frankly worried at first glance that there was too much bread going on here. Fortunately my fears were unfounded as the bread was airy and fluffy. Topped with sesame seeds and lightly toasted, it was very enjoyable and stayed together right to the final bite. Toppings - red onions, tomatoes, American cheese, and green leaf lettuce. All items tasted fresh. My wife was a little disappointed with the cheese, as she felt it should have been better melted over the grill. My burger came with liberal amounts of avocado, bacon, cheddar and jack cheeses, mushroom & onions. Meat - chuck steak, crumbly, cooked a perfectly medium-rare, smelled like steak, tasted like steak, a little apparent char taste. 1/2 lb patty and nice amount of beef in every bite. The meat was lean and lacked the grease you would see at lower-grade burger place. Ideally, I think additional seasoning and a bit more char on the sear would have helped take things to an even higher level. All in all though, I would say that this was as good a hamburger as I have had in quite some time. The burgers were on the large size, and with a drink and tip, we were about $70 poorer. Service was on the slow side and atmosphere was no-thrills type of place. Their burgers though are the real deal and we wouldn't hesitate making a return visit. We've heard good things about the Buffalo burgers they offer, but that's for another visit. Highly recommended! read more

Came here for quick meal, lucky we got parking in lot across from restaurant,, ordered the fried zucchini, of course,, then I ordered a breakfast burger,, the meat itself came out really dry n no taste ( compare in and out burger meat, )....so disappointing,, my second time ordering this burger,, I don't remember having meat this dry????? my BFF order the chicken sandwich. I ask him is OK it's good.?? anything he eats it's Ok,,, but for my taste is different,,, just think why we haven't been coming here as often,,, because it's the burgers,, isn't juicy!!!! I had a really good meal at Bullhead. We had dinner with their Teriyaki Salmon and Rib Eye Steak. Both dishes were excellent. Both dishes were very good and I really love their food tonight. Their salad bar was very well stocked with plenty of choices also. Service was very good and we didn't have to wait much time at all, less than 20 mins from time ordered to eating. As much as I hate to admit it, it's pretty clear to me now that, despite how long they've been around, I actually didn't know nearly as much about Bullshead as I thought I did. Up until my visit here, I was always under the impression that they were an old school spot that primarily served up burgers along with a handful of non-burger dishes. So, in some ways, I was pretty spot on, but it'd also be more than fair to say I underestimated them by quite a bit as well! Stepping inside, the look of Bullshead feels a little dated, but, as one of the oldest restaurants in West Portal, that came as no surprise. What did, though, is how extensive the menu is. Honestly, it might have the widest variety I've ever seen - nearly two dozen types that come with either a 1/3 or 1/2 pound patty made with ground beef, turkey, bison, or Beyond Meat (they also have a fish burger, portobello burger, and a veggie burger). However, in the event you want something else, they have plenty to offer - over a dozen different sandwiches (chicken, patty melts, reubens, BLT, club, etc.), fried chicken, steaks, ribs, fish & chips, seafood plates, a salad bar, and so much more! Since I had already planned on getting a burger before we even walked in, it didn't take me long to settle on what to get. As appealing as some of their offerings looked, I immediately settled on their AVOCADO & BACON BURGER with a 1/3 lb beef patty ($19.45) as soon as I saw it. All in all, this was pretty solid. In particular, I loved how generous they were with the bacon, the Swiss cheese I added (+$1) tasted so good, and the patty was quite juicy. Plus, I liked that the avocado and veggies were so fresh! That said, the bun was just okay (kind of dry) and the fries were rather starchy/chalky and not all that crispy. While part of me is pretty tempted to try their ribeye and NY steak that folks seem to be so high on, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also scared to, given how my burger was so overcooked. Besides, considering how you can get a decent burger with so many options, as well as fries, for about $20, it almost feels like a deal these days. Calibur down the street would still be my go-to spot for a burger around here, but there's no question Bullshead is where to go if you want more options. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up. read more

We came to Bullshead for dinner due to a friend's recommendation, as a large party of 9. Even though we came 40 minutes before closing, we were served with utmost care and they did not kick us out even though we stayed almost an hour past closing. I commend the restaurant for great service and accommodating our multiple requests. That said, the food was mixed. I did appreciate the healthier bison burgers, which were very large, but the burger itself was more plain with a soft untoasted bun, and was more no frills despite the higher price tag. The curly fries were tasty though, and the salad bar (which can be added to an entree for $7.50) came with a fairly extensive selection of things. The salad bar was running low on items though since it was the end of the day. The interior of the restaurant was cozy, and the restaurant is really not that big. Parking is street only and can get tricky, but the restaurant is also just outside the West Portal Muni station so you can easily take public transit in. Overall, the service and salad bar were great, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the burgers. read more

So glad to finally try this spot! I've been walking by for months and finally found the night to try. First of all - everyone who we interacted with was so friendly and service was incredibly fast. Spouse ordered a 1/3 lb bison blue cheese and mozzarella burger with a side of fries. Highlights: the steak had a beautiful sear on it and was perfectly cooked; the baked potato was also perfectly soft/fluffy; perfect cook on the burger which had great flavor; love me a salad bar! Wanted fried chicken and this was the closest pace in my neighborhood. It was a half a chicken so great value. The breast was not dry, so all pieces were very crispy on the outside and tender/juicy on the inside. I also tried the fish and chips using cod. Bullshead's steak was mentioned as one of the top steakhouses on SF Eater and they were not wrong. Had the rib-eye cooked medium and it was done perfectly. The steak was perfectly seasoned and grilled. The good quality meat kept the steak juicy. Tried the Challenger burger and it was not anything unique or special. Burger patty was a bit dry and nothing was done with the bun which caused the burger to be more dry. It reminded me of a burger you'd get from a backyard bbq. I can see why their steak is highly recommended though. I'd come back just for that. read more

We've not been back to dine here in a very long time. The place is so old inside that it's 40 yrs overdue for a remodel. It's still popular among locals who live nearby. The bathroom is gender neutral, clean, but old. I tried the bison cheese burger, which was good. Nothing special. My onion rings (addition$1 charge) were pretty good. Hubby had the regular cheese burger with fries. His fries were good and didn't appear to be the frozen kind you buy at the supermarket. Condiments are in the table except they bring a squeeze bottle of Mayo to you. In the private room next to us, a group of ladies were having lunch. I watched a lady sitting near by having the salad bar choice for lunch, it didn't look good to me. Another lady had the fried fish and I heard her remark that it was very good.
