As a Korean-American, I've tried this restaurant numerous times when a craving comes along, always hoping for an enjoyable and delicious meal. Unfortunately, the only thing on the menu that they get right is the soy-garlic fried chicken. Instead of using authentic Korean flavors, almost all of their food is soaked in an excess of gochujang, drowning out all the natural flavors of the ingredients in an attempt to taste Korean. Additionally, since so many dishes use this same "technique", they end up all tasting the same. The servers are kind but seem a bit confused most of the time, and the quality of the side dishes is questionable as well. Bul is one of my go to spots in adams morgan and it never disappoints! The menu has good variety starting with their drinks (lots of soju options) and on my most recent visit I was pleased with some newer vegetarian options. The bibimbap guksu might be a new go-to, especially for the summer for a very refreshing (and very generously portioned) meal. It was fantastic and easily could be shared between at least two people. I've had different pancakes on different visits, but I think the kimchi one is my favorite, super savory and delicious. My friend ordered soondubu this time and it was great as always. I love getting their soondubu in the winter because it is so warming. I love the amount of spice in their dishes, and it's worth noting that if something is labeled spicy on the menu it probably will be quite spicy (although the bibim guksu wasn't as spicy as other dishes I've had). However, if you want good tasting, somewhat-authentic Korean food without crossing the river over to northern Virginia, Bul is the best you'll be able to find. This place serves Korean bar food, and has an extensive menu full of small plates and entrees, with a decent variety of Korean alcohol. While it may be slightly overpriced, the food tastes pretty good so you can't complain. My favorite dishes are the samgyupsal ("pork belly ssam" on the menu) and the K.F.C. (Korean fried chicken). As a visitor from NYC, would not go out of the way for this again. Great service here. Once we walked in, the staff was immediately available to cater to my needs of finding the perfect place to sit - i can get picky at times. We ended up sitting outside, but facing the inside of the restaurant. Good view of what was going inside but still in the midst of the admo 18th street chaos. There were many appealing appetizers options to choose from. Who could say no to something fried, spicy, and full of carbs?? We ended up ordering the fried potato shrimp, spicy popcorn chicken, and the spicy pork and chicken tacos. The food came out and everything was good, but definitely not spicy. My only qualm of the night is why advertise spicy when the dish is not spicy at all? I heard another customer at table near us ask their waitress, "is the spicy KFC (korean fried chicken) really spicy?" Waitress' response, "no its not spicy at all..." then the customer goes, "well, why do you call it spicy kfc?" My recommendation for a dinner of 3-5 people: + Bibimbap ($12) or Bulgogi dolsot ($14) + Grilled Pork Belly ($18) or Short Ribs ($24) + Spicy KFC ($13 for 1/2 size) + Appetizer - not recommending the potato shrimp, which wasn't bad not not worth $5. If you are walking through the AdMo area and looking for a nice Korean place to sit down, I would recommend visiting Bul. Five stars for the service and ambience. Three point five stars for the food (although it did taste good). The waiters here are friendly, and when I visited, there was an ample amount of seating. When you first walk-in, you notice their rustic wooden interior with hip wall artwork. I sat at the bar as I came by myself, and enjoyed a $3 Soju shot. I recommend the sour grape flavor as it is refreshing and easy to down. A good amount of sweetness. I ordered the pork belly ssam, came out in 15 minutes (a good waiting time), but was a bit disappointed that it wasn't really crisp. It tasted good, but I am always used to pork belly having that perfect amount of crispiness to it. The hot plate also came with garlic, onions, kimichi, and peppers. For $19, it was a bit on the higher range of the meals and may order from their smaller bites section just to savor what else they have. Been here on two separate occasions - one with a small party and one with a huge party. I loved both occasions but BULieve it or naht, I really think this place is great for larger parties because you get to try everythang! In terms of the food, here's what I would suggest: Kimchi Pancake - oh baby this is a great appetizer and is not as heavy as other pancakes I've had before! Slight kimchi taste but lots of BULtiful flavor a. The spicy KFC (half size is good enough for a big group) is not even that spicy and just has a great kick of flavor that'll make you lick the whole plate. The bibimbap or bulgogi dolsot if you want it in a hot pot is a great rice mixture, but wish they had more veggies in it, but still great! The grilled pork belly accompanied with kimchi and veggies is just divine! Pair this with your bibimbap and you can't complain! For drinking, we had the yogurt soju - pretty standard and the watermelon soju. The watermelon was delicious and entertaining to scoop from! This place is a lovely Korean place! We had fried mandu, pajeon, pork belly ssam and bulgogi dish and they were all delicious. They were the right kind of spicy and my friend Rachel who had never tasted Korean food before enjoyed it very much, including the spicy chilli paste. Service was great, and the price was average for a city like Washington DC, but it was a little bit of walk from the metro station. I was craving dukbokki today so I decided to try Bul for dinner! The dukbokki was extremely satisfying and really fulfilled my craving, however I do wish it came as a main dish and not just a side because I wanted more of it! It was so pillowy soft and comforting. It could've been a little bit spicier, but I'm extremely happy with the flavors anyways because it was sweet in all the right ways. I also got corn cheese and that's really hard to mess up so that was super satisfying too! Same with the wings-- they were the perfect blend of sweet and spicy and crispy like KFC ought to be. My only gripe (and why I decided to knock down a star, though if I could give half stars I would definitely give Bul a 4.5) is that the soondubu jjigae lacked a certain depth of flavor. It was mostly okay, but as I ate it, it just felt like the flavor was pretty flat, which isn't what I want from soondubu jjigae. But overall, it was a good experience! I went with one other friend and we shared everything-- so if you plan to do something similar, I recommend ordering around the same amount of food we did since it was just the right amount. Tiny storefront opens to a lovely restaurant with a manageable size menu. I ended up at Bul on a Friday night. There was no wait, no hassle. Just walked in and sat. We had a couple of the rice options: Fried rice with kimchi and tuna and the spicy squid rice. Both were so so good! Large bowls but I ended up eating everything because the taste was amazing. Just chew. But still tasted really good. And was tiny (but probably normal sized to people with normal appetite sizes). K-pork fried rice: braised Berkshire pork belly with roasted kimchi. I was expecting slices of pork belly but it's more minced (sliced and diced into little pieces) pork belly. It was full of flavor. The pork had flavor and the kimchi fried rice didn't over power the pork. I wish there was more and is like to suggest a small fried egg on top next time... The. It would be the bomb. My friend got the soup. It tasted good but I didn't have a lot of it as its summer and a little humid out... so I wasn't trying to have a ton of soup in my last days of summer. My husband had been wanting to try Bul's kimchi jjigae for quite some time so we settled on it for our V-Day take-out dinner. Everything was ready for pick up in less than 20 minutes. They also have delivery, but we were a bit too far. We really enjoyed the fried kimchi dumplings. The young man who answered the phone and gave us our order was very courteous. I hate to offer this review but Yelp asked. Ambience/space were great. Table service was ok. Kitchen service was awful. Food was fine (at the time) but the spicy seafood yaki was not worth $21. Kitchen forgot two of our three dishes. The first came out and 10 minutes later had to ask the server (who was oblivious) where the others were. Momentarily the second main came out. Started to eat. The third dish...the appetizer...never came. We cancelled it. I watched the owner/manager speaking lovingly to the table of friends and children in front of us wondering if I should ask her if something was wrong that night. I'm not sensitive to spice or seafood and neither were predominate in the yaki but I spent the next 24 hours kneeling at the toilet trying to forgive and forget. I'm still eating probiotics to recover. IMO the best thing about this Korean restaurant was the Australian Terra beer. I hope I'm the exception but I won't be going back. read more

My close friend and I met up here and it was great! The food came out quickly and we ordered off the appetizers section to kind of enjoy it like a tapas restaurant. We tried the spring rolls which were different. They're crispy and have a nice complimentary sauce to go with it. I also really enjoyed the dumplings. My friend had me try Dukbokki and Takoyako which was different but tasty! It was a little chewy and gooey but I didn't mind lol I like playing with certain textures. TL; DR if you are 21+ the Watermelon SOJU is amazing, bulgogi fries are a must try, Budae Jjigae is worth a try! I was just chilling at my cousins' house one afternoon and then nonchalantly one of them said that he'd been craving for budae jjigae (Korean army base stew). The next thing I knew, we were in the car headed to Adam's Morgan! We ordered watermelon soju, calamari, bulgogi with rice, bulgogi fries, corn cheese, wings and the budae jjigae. I usually don't like alcohol but flavored soju is AMAZING... the watermelon masks the taste of alcohol so well, it ended up just tasting like watermelon juice. The calamari came out super crunchy, the bulgogi with rice was for my adorable 6 month old niece to eat, and the wings were really crunchy and had the perfect amount of sauce covering it! The bulgogi fries were out of this world, potatoes just seem to make something already good, great! The fries were the perfect vehicle for the bulgogi, while the cheese held all the pieces of crispy bulgogi and other toppings together! My cousins' have never heard of corn cheese before so of course I had to order it! The corn cheese went really well with the korean fried chicken and the budae jjigae. We came here for the V-day special and ordered the 5 course fixed menu for $75 per person. Initially, i thought - man that's pretty steep for korean food... especially "street" korean food. Nonetheless, we thought we'd give this new establishment a try. First course: edamame, kim chi, and stringy seaweed thingy - basic. nothing impressive or new to me. Second course: chicken thighs yakitori style and grilled sweet sausage - chicken good grill-y tasting chicken - very tender and moist but could have used a bit more sauce for flavor. the sweet sausage was also very good - cutting it up gives it a nice crisp cook to it Third course: fried flying fish - really well done small bites of fish. the smokey grilled flavor was very good - don't be scared to try it! grilled octopus legs - probably my favorite dish of the night! again the grilled smokey flavor accompanied with this refreshing shredded radish was awesome Fourth course: hangover soup - it's a very peppery soup with fishcakes and green onions. this is one of their 'fusion' dishes I assume. it was definitely a good soup to have on a cold day. Fifth course: korean short rib sam - really deliciously cooked meat served traditionally to be wrapped in lettuce, rice, grilled onions, and bbq/spicy sauce. Those grilled onions were heavenly. mushroom bibimbap - also good but i prefer my bibimbap a little crispy. Dessert: two kissing red bean fish cakes with ice cream - the cakes are very well made - moist and softly fresh and with ice cream it was perfect! our meal came with a bottle of unfiltered sake and orion beer. overall we left very satisfied. the food came at a good pace although there was a lull between third and fourth course, the waitress apologized and we weren't in a hurry anyway. I visited my friend in DC and WOW this place was amazing. Amazing drinks, vibes, and food -the pork belly was very tender. It was a bit rough at some edges but nonetheless, delicious. It was seasoned a bit but not too overpowering so we could really taste the smokiness of the meat. I love how it came with jalapeños to add a spicy kick -the korean fries were delicious. It had fries, kimchi, and some sauces on top and they weren't overwhelming in any way. It was also a great dish to eat with alcohol because it's greasy and spicy -the spicy udon had many pieces of seafood in it! I was not disappointed. Usually restaurants give like 5 pieces of octopus but this had plenty. The sauce was also spicy and tangy -the budae jjigae was delicious to eat, esp since the weather was cold outside. It had the right amount of spiciness, and the ingredients such as some spam and noodles really made the dish amazing. It's hard to mess up budae jjigae but this place did it well. Average Korean food, had horrible service when sitting outside. Had to go inside multiple times to ask for someone. They took 20 minutes to bring us spoons for our stew we immediately asked for. It was cold by that point. When we handed in our card that also took 30 minutes they had it inside which is just bad practice and I eventually went inside and asked for it out of concern. They were swiping cards at the front but then went to the back to get mine which I really didn't like safety-wise since they had it so long. The table next to us was having similar problems, I heard them say they were waiting an hour for one of their apps. I was really excited to go to Bul with my friends, but unfortunately, as much as the food really reminded me of my mom's cooking, the service from one particular gentleman wasn't all too friendly. I know that this place gets super busy, especially during the evenings (AND on weekends). My friend didn't realize more people were joining us, and we were told that it wasn't their responsibility if anything spilt... what? I mean, no one was planning on spilling anything here- everything is too expensive to spill! The tone of the employee was just not nice. We were being as respectful of the space as possible, but the employee seemed like he was getting more and more frustrated, which left me in a bad mood too. I wouldn't come here during peak hours- people are hustling a bustling but if you don't beat the crowd, expect to wait at least an hour for a table. Not sure if I'd come back, just because that particular employee made me feel super uncomfortable. We ordered the seafood pancake, the bulgogi rice, and the Kalbi. The pancake was good but thicker than most Korean pancakes I've had so it was a lot more filling than I was expecting it to be. The bulgogi rice was also good but more rice and less bulgogi so that was sort of disappointing. There was probably like 2 cups of rice in that bowl. Plan on waiting a long time to be seated and for food. We drove up from NYC to dine here after my husband saw it on Man vs. Food. After a 5-hour drive, we waited close to 1/2 hour after we signed up for a seat. They do not take reservations. They have you sign up on a list and tell you "its a long wait" with attitude as if you should know. The waiter kept calling me "sweetie" which I found rude. When I went to sit at an empty seat at the bar and read the menu I was told that the seat was only for people who ordered "to go". Seconds later 3 young women that the waiter was attracted to were offered that seat and a dirty tables seat! We finally got a table only to wait over 1 hour for very mediocre pricy food. It's disappointing, to say the least. The table was dirty and sticky, they didnt remove dirty plates, it was freezing cold with air blowing on us, and not worth it overall. The bathrooms are filthy and don't have paper towels. Post Covid this is not the time to be lax with cleanliness. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Ended up dining at Bul in DC instead and it did the job right for Korean fried chicken. I'd recommend starting with the kimchi fries and kimchi dumplings. The Sweet & spicy KFC was very flavorful. FYI, they won't sit the party until everyone arrives. Bul gets packed quickly with long lines. The tables and seats are placed too close, making the restaurant very crowded throughout. This place is 3.5 stars! The short rib is the best thing on the menu- get it! The fries are plain- wish they add some toppings to them for the price but otherwise crunchy! The spicy popcorn chicken- skip it! I don't know why all the reviews said it was amazing- they were really okay and just heavy on the sauce which was 90% sriracha tasting- was hoping for something more flavor. The wings were super sticky but my friend said the sauce was lacking a sweetness that when you order from most Korean places order (he ordered Mild and said they were super salty) There American beer menu was not available even though they put it on the menu- they are waiting for their permit to come in so if you want to drink it's only Korean liquor and beer. This is the Korean version of Sakuramen. And I loveeee Sakuramen! They have good Korean food, almost as good as Kogiya & Yechon in Annandale. Plus the restaurant is hip & ambient. You won't have to drive miles and miles to Annandale either! Our table of 4 ordered several dishes to share, including Japanese pan cake, fried chicken, dukbokki, Korean pork belly fried rice, and jampong soup. Everything was delicious!!! Jampong soup had lots of fresh seafood and tasted amazing, just a tad too spicy for my liking (and I can eat spicy food so be careful if you order this). Love the pork belly fried rice but wish it had more meat :(. Dukbokki could be less sweet. Japanese pan cake could be crunchier. But I'm neat-picking here. Then I get a call back from the owner asking me to order through grub hub and when I declined she said I would still have to pay half. There's not many great Korean food options in DC. If you want the authentic stuff, you have to make the trip to Annandale. But as a Korean living in DC proper, when I get the cravings, Bul is the best Korean food option in DC that i've found. The menu's got a combination of traditional Korean dishes and more Americanized takes on Korean dishes. But their strength seems to be more on the Americanized spins. The Korean Fries are a great way to start your meal off if you're hungry. A nice pile of kimchi and your choice of protein (i suggest the bulgogi) atop your classic fries. The Korean Fried Chicken is my favorite dish here. Nicely glazed and fried. The Sweet & Spicy has the perfect amount of heat to make you sweat a little, but not hurt. Good portions, fair prices. Theirs soups are where you'll find their more traditional dishes. Their Korean staples like the Kimchi Jjigae and Soondubu could be a lot bolder in flavor and more abundant in the ingredients. The flavors/ingredients/execution aren't as authentic. But i think part of that might be on purpose to cater to the mainstream diner. I wish their soups were more authentic cause I think DC diners have shown they can appreciate intimidatingly authentic Asian flavors, and even embrace it. One of my favorite restaurants in DC (possibly one of my favorite restaurants ever, no joke). I've always been seated right away without a reservation, even on weekends. The Kimchi Jjigae, Jjampong, and K-Fried rice are fantastic. If I lived closer and could afford it, I would literally eat here everyday. read more
