Bul lived up to all of my expectations. Once I saw form cheese on the menu I knew we had to go. Went on a rainy weekday and had the restaurant almost entirely to ourselves. Food came out quickly, but it also didn't come out together which was a little frustrating. The cheese from was cheesy and creamy and everything I dreamed. My japchae with bulgogi was a huge portion and so delicious. The rabokki also had so many layers for it (and get cheese as an add on it's so worth it). It's a little far from my place but I'll definitely be back!
At the very beginning I was going to recommend this restaurant and rate 5 stars, until I requested more Kimchi without being noticed I will be charged extra 4 dollars. I kinda dissatisfied with this service here. And the spicy pork ssam we ordered was cut into pieces too small. I'll prefer the pork is in a bigger slice. The taste overall is okay. My favorite is the rabokki(rice cake bowl), we added cheese which enriched the texture.
I've been to Bul twice now and have had two completely different experiences! The first time was on a Friday around prime dinner time. My friend and I ordered their JapChae, Buligogi bowl, and KFC. We waited over an hour before getting our food, and without asking or mentioning anything to the staff, the manager came over and apologized. They comped us our drinks and made sure the remaining experience was good. The food was solid, but I was more biased bc I was starving The second time was two weeks ago, on a Saturday night. The restaurant was almost empty, which was really surprising. My friends and I ordered their Dukbokki, SoonDuBu Jiggae, and soy Garlic KFC. The jiggae didn't have a lot of Tofu, which was a little disappointing. The chicken was good, but not great. There aren't a lot of Korean restaurants in Admo, let alone Korean places, so Bul stands out. However, there's better out there for sure. Nevertheless, the service here is pleasant and I appreciate the cuisine they bring to the area
I have been coming here for years and I'm very sad to report that while this place is still a good place to bring friends to for some small bites, it is no where near a spot for an authentic meal. The sauces are too sweet, the Japchae was disappointing but the winner was the o-dari (hard to mess up battered fried squid) and the Korean fries (and only because the sauce and cheese were a winner). The only way I'm coming back is if Im bringing a group for some fun before a big event and will be no longer having big meals here.
The service is a solid 10. Staff/owner are super sweet and accommodating, you're made to feel right at home. We went in without reservations and luckily got in right away. But after we got in, they got slammed! It was super cute that every other person that came in, the owner asked them to hold her clipboard while she went off to look for a table for them. It had an air of familiarity that I can totally appreciate. The owner came in and recommended several dishes and it was just my husband and our 9 year old son, and we ordered way too much but it was so worth it. I had the spicy squid, my husband the fried one, with the seaweed salad, (which truthfully I don't even know why he's order that in a Korean restaurant) but it was the best seaweed salad ever! He also order order the rice cakes, which were AMAZING! They were sticky and gooey , like mochi consistency, which I LOVED!! He also ordered the kfc chicken which came with the smelliest but tastiest turnip. The table next to us had it and we kept smelling it and I was like what is that; & then we got it and it's was like wow! We ordered the fried dumplings with the owners mom recipe and it was short of perfection. I so want to come back day after a day to this place and I'm sure anyone else would.
Sadly, I think this will be my last time coming to Bul. The quality isn't that great. If you're willing to pay an extra $10-$15 on top of Bul prices, I would go down the street to Anju instead. Maybe the owners don't care enough to increase the quality because customers will still come here for their Korean food fix. My spicy chicken ssam tasted like BBQ sauce instead of gochujang. The rice was dry and not the best. But I am comparing all of this to my experience at other Korean restaurants in Virginia and Maryland. Nice workers, but food could be better!
We came on New Year's Day and it was open. Always a plus. I ordered the Bulgolgi BiBimbap. It was delicious. The hostess and waitress was really nice and gave us recommendations. My husband ordered the half chicken and it was a lot of chicken. We ended up taking 4 pieces home with us. The sweet chili sauce was good. He had a honey ginger tea and it looked great especially for these cold months. I highly recommend this place.
History of Present Indulgence: Roaming the streets of AdMo with my wife and a few friends and that sweet sweet craving Korean Fried Chicken, AKA the better KFC, hit deep. Physical Exam: Taste - The fried chicken itself was a bangin 10 out of 10. We got the sweet & spicy one but there are a couple sauce options and I'm dying to go back to try them all, especially the BUL one that allegedly will "fire in my mouth." The Kimchi pancake wasn't my favorite. Taste was a bit bland, not enough kimchi, and the texture was a lot doughier than I would've liked. Rest of our party of 5 agreed with that too. The Japchae was also a very okay version. A bit heavy on the sesame oil, under-seasoned, and in a pool of too much liquid. It works as a side if you're looking to have some noodles to accompany the meal. The corn cheese was basically just that. Buttery corn and melty mozzarella that was a nice side but nothing to write to your Korean grandmother about. Ending on a good note though, the Bulgogi Ssam was hearty plate of beef with that sweet, savory taste you look for in a Kbbq dish. Service - It was as good as it can get for a place as busy as they were with only 1-2 servers managing everyone. We did have an order forgotten and our drinks took awhile to come out, but they were definitely working at max capacity. Environment - Crowded and loud, but only because they're popular. It's not the biggest space and they really pack the sardines in the can there if you know what I mean. The atmosphere is fitting for small and medium-sized groups, hanging out with friends, and dining solo too at the bar seating. It's not a quiet, intimate date spot, but it's the type of place you come for the food. Assessment/Plan: Am I absolutely in love with this place and telling all my friends who like Korean food they HAVE to come here? Nah. Was the KFC the exact thing I was looking for, and if I'm craving again would come back? 1000%. Was the service amazing? Not exactly. But was pounding down somaek (mixing soju and beer) with my friends over decent food a great way to spend a Friday night? You bet your ass it was. Is this one of the most mixed reviews I've ever written? Sort of. Am I gonna stop asking questions? Yes, but only after this next one because I think it's the important one if you've made it this far. Should you come here and try it out yourself? YES.

We ordered a bunch of things to share, and so they brought each dish out one by one as soon as it was cooked. I love the vibe of this place for a group hang out with friends or siblings, we had some laughs over a full table of food and drinks. My only picky thing was that the egg on our bibimbap was over cooked, would've liked it a little runnier. But overall, everything tasted great!
Came to Bul on a Sunday and really enjoyed my time there. The pork belly was good. I liked how it came out sizzling and thought the garlic added a nice level of flavor to the wraps. The star was the soy garlic half chicken. This dish can feed 2-3 people easily. The flavors came through and the chicken was so juicy. Would definitely come back for the chicken! read more
Had a great time here with a group of 6 on a Saturday night. Service is fast, food is fresh and sizzling, and the water is cold! The menu is huge and everything is really great- you can't go wrong with a stew, bibimbap, the sides, or of course the fried chicken! Will definitely be back! read more
Good korean in DC area. Love their bulgogi bowl- Portions were ample. Like their Saki too. A lil pricey range for food in the area though. Place is decent but not fancy enough for the prices. Still good place to try if you are craving Korean or after bar hopping. read more

Came here with my partner as a back up after our first choice didn't work out. It was pretty good food. I had the Bulgogi ssam and my partner had the bibimbap. My bulgogi ssam was delicious . I ate ALL of it. My partner while he liked his food he did say it paled in comparison to mine. The wait staff was so nice and attentive. We came about an hour and a half before closing. So the manager was out and about, and he talked to us just to ask how the food was and had a small chit chat which was nice. A cozy place for quick Korean dinner. My only complaint was the beef was a bit hard on my stomach afterwards, but I guess that's what happens when I eat beef pretty late at night right before sleeping. A solid place for good Korean food. I've now been twice, no reservations, and both times snagged outdoor tables on nice, busy Adams Morgan evenings. My husband thinks their spicy seafood yaki (udon noodles) is one of his favorite dishes in all of DC. I enjoyed their classic bulgogi bibimbap - generously large. On my second trip, I found the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) to be a bit dry, so I'm glad I also ordered the zucchini pancake - another generously large dish that could easily be shared. Service was friendly, though we were checked on maybe a little too often, and by too many different people ... until it was time to get to-go boxes and the check - and then we felt a little abandoned. It did start to get busy, and there's a labor shortage of course, so I get it. We'll definitely be back. read more
I don't think there is anything I love more than trying new foods and new places and @bul brought both for me - I was craving Korean food because my social media is blown up with tteokbokki and jjigae that I have no idea where to get - a few google searches led us to Bul, a small, intimidate yet popping spot with happy vibes in admo - ordered the seas food jijgae and was handed a hot bowl the size of a small country, absolutely overflowing with various shell fish and other seafood. it was spicy but the broth was light and kept me from feeling ill from the portion size - my company ordered the glass chicken noodles which were yummy, but nothing crazy special, definitely would be a great take out meal/leftovers though - we split the seafood pancake (I'm on a under the sea kick okay?) and this was wild, thick enough that it was soft and chewy (which may throw some ppl off tbh) but the crisp outter layer added a new texture to the mushy pancake and fish. No reservations but was able to get seated immediately on Saturday at ~6:30. Got 2 flavors of Korean fried chicken - sweet & spicy and soy sauce. In terms of flavor, I would definitely recommend the soy sauce over the sweet & spicy KFC. The tteokbokki was average, would not get again. read more
I went here with a few friends and this place did not disappoint. Good Korean food in DC is something I didn't expect but this restaurant was so good. We ordered a bunch of different dishes kimchi dumplings, sweet and spicy KFC, spicy pork belly. Everything was delicious! Our server was positive, friendly, and very tentative with our requests. We got here just in time before it got really busy. Overall, this place was amazing and would come here again. read more

Cute restaurant with Korean comfort food. Detailed breakdown below: **Service, 4/5** Not too much interaction but polite and efficient staff. Food came out relatively quickly. **Decor & cleanliness, 5/5** Very cute interior and everything seemed clean. **Price & portion, 5/5** Portions are pretty big so you get what you pay for! **Taste of the food, 3.5/5** - Rabboki, 4/5: Spice was a bit strong for me, but the rice cakes and ramen were cooked really well. Like a ton of comfort foods in one! - Bulgogi rice, 3/5: The veggies weren't cut uniformly so they weren't all cooked to the same doneness. There was a lot of bulgogi but it was reeeally overcooked so it turned out a bit crumbly and dry. read more
Beef tacos: soupy and watery. Rabokki: over sweetened. Jjampong: oversalted. Service: - ignored customers' requests. - slow service though it's a not-busy Tues night. Cleaniess: Water cups were stacked with water in them. Plates had unidentifiable marks. Pots look rusty... I've dined in a handful Restaurants during covid-19, and this would not be the place I'd go back. I still gave it 2 stars only because I had a good company dining with me. It's the worst korean food I had with the best company, and that, made this meal memorable. I hope the restaurant manager sees this review and would make an effort to improve. After all, it's a great location. Please don't waste it. read more

Bul is one of the the most authentic Korean places in DC and will recommend this to anyone visiting. It's casual not near as upscale options but that's exactly why locals love this spot. We had the Bulgogi Bibimbap Which was so good and would recommend this as a group to share. JapChae This was such a surprising dish and it is a very large dish with some out of this world ingredients that make it flavorful in every bite. Dukbokki Was an awesome starter as well and would give this as another easily shared item The owner was our waitress and made us aware early on that they were slammed and our food may be a little slow but overall everything came out in wonderful timing and would definitely give the kudos of being openly honest right off the bat. Thanks to everyone for being so tentative in this restaurant. read more

We are lovers of Korean food and this was one of the top places in the district for Korean Fried Chicken, so we have been eagerly waiting to try it! Let me tell you -- Bul did NOT disappoint! First of all the service was quick and the staff were super friendly and laid back! We ordered spring rolls, bulgogi tacos and the sweet and spicy KFC. Everything was fabulous. The spring rolls almost tasted like simple fried shrimp. They were different and delicious! The bulgogi tacos were packed with flavor and kick! But the main event -- the Sweet and Spicy KFC was the highlight for me. The chicken was huge and incredibly crispy (who doesn't love extra crispy chicken?). The sauce had an equal level of sweetness and kick but not to an overwhelming level of spice. We are already planning our next visit to Bul! If you're local to the area or just visiting, definitely check this place out! read more

I absolutely loved this place! They offer inside dining, but everything is spaced out. I wish I got a picture of what was on the table - hand sanitizer and a guide on when you should wear your mask (basically at all times unless you're eating or drinking). I thought the places set up in response to COVID was awesome. This was my first time at the restaurant and I was really impressed with the food OBVIOUSLY but the design and decor were really awesome. It reminded me of the restaurants in South Korea and made you feel like you stepped outside of DC. In regards to the food, I was a little nervous to try it out because Korean in Annandale is hard to beat....but this place had the flavor, portion, and service! The rice cake was PERFECT, they were just the right texture and they weren't too hard. I got the jjamppong with noodles and it was definitely one of the best I've had. The portions are pretty generous so I recommend getting things to share. They have a lot of appetizers and shareable dishes, or get two entrees and share that. I definitely ordered a lot and was extremely full when I left. A GOOD FULL THOUGH. I'm coming back to try the dolsot, ssam, fried chicken, and seafood pancake. read more
This place is pretty much everything you'd want in a Korean comfort restaurant. We got seated within 10 minutes on a Friday night which was surprising. The owner was so kind and very friendly as well. We started off with yogurt soju and it was absolutely delicious. It wasn't overly sweet but gave that nostalgic Yakult flavor. For food, we ordered the dukbokki (added cheese), spicy seafood yaki, and sweet and spicy KFC. Our food came out very quickly and everything was hot and fresh. The while everything was delicious, the sweet and spicy KFC was the start of the night. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, and it also came with a side of pickled radish to compliment the strong flavor. We all agreed it was our favorite. I will most certainly be returning here! read more
Third time here and still absolutely loving it. Came here once with Korean friends and they raved about this spot, citing it as the best/most authentic in town. Totally no frills, you can walk in without reservations during weekend nights, and the food is so delicious. read more

I thought the food here was good but not amazing. My friends and I got a bunch of appetizers and the tofu bibimbap. The food came out really fast and the servers were super friendly. I thought the bibimbap lacked some flavor and the spicy popcorn chicken was a little too crunchy, but everything else was good. We also split the Makkoli (a type of rice wine) which was not what I expected (it was cold even though it was served in a tea pot) but it tasted pretty good. read more

It's not an authentic Korean food but has some elements of it. I had chicken soon tofu and it was too salty yet watery broth. Other people in my group had chapchae or other Korean inspired food and they enjoyed the portions not thé authenticity though. read more

Overall it was great - service was fast and the ambiance was good. The tofu bibimbap could've used a little more flavoring. We also got the kimchi and veggie dumplings, the zucchini pancake, and the corn cheese which were all great. The spicy popcorn chicken was super crunchy but still good. read more

we went there on a Saturday and we could just walk in and find a table at around 5:30pm. the kimchi jjigae and zucchini pancake were okay, but the rabboki was such a big disappointment. as you can see in the photo, there was no sauce on it, and it was really bland - I think they might have run out of sauce ? I don't know what happened, but this is the blandest rabboki I had. Only giving 3 stars since the staff were relatively decent and the ambience wasn't too bad. read more
This is a great Korean spot that has your traditional favorites and then some new ones and all that pair well with Soju. I will definitely have to come back to try some of their other dishes. We came in around 7:30 on a Friday night and it was pretty busy. There wasn't really a host or hostess at the front and groups that came in after us tried to cut in front of us a few times so be aware. We ordered the pork belly, galbi (short ribs) and kimchi fries. The fries were generic and wouldn't probably get them again. The galbi was definitely the best cooked out of the meats. They were tender and flavorful, compared to the pork belly which tasted a bit tough, although still tasty. I do wish we got some banchan with our meal or some kind of vegetable and found it strange that we didn't. I looked at other Yelper's pictures after we got back home and realized that we were supposed to get lettuce wraps for our meats. Kinda strange that it skipped our table. Regardless, I really enjoyed the food and will be back to try their KFC. read more
