    Devils Backbone Vienna Lager
    Chris B.

I was in town for work and had about an hour to kill before meeting the guys for dinner so I decided to stop in here for a couple of beers. The appearance is on par with most other BWW locations, large space with ample seating and an abundance of TV's lining the walls. The bar area was toward the back of the space, and looked like it seated around 20 people. The place was dead, even for a Tuesday evening, probably only around 5-8 other customers in the whole place. As a comparison the Texas Roadhouse across the parking lot was packed. The bartender was pleasant and attentive, and checked on me often. I did not order food on this visit, but BWW is usually pretty consistent on food quality from one location to the next. I did have a couple of beers; the Yee Haw Dunkel, and the Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. Both beers seemed fresh with no apparent off flavors from dirty tap lines. The tap list seemed a bit uninspired, but it is a BWW not a craft beer bar. After reading through some of the other recent reviews I can see why the place was so dead, there seems to have been some negative experiences over the last 1-2 years. Fortunately I didn't experience any of these issues during my visit.

I've been coming here for about two years now and today was the worst experience I've ever had. Paid $38 for 15/15 wings with 2 types of sauce. When I received the wings to go, I looked in the bag and there was 8 sauce cups. Looked at the wings there was no sauce on the wings. Asked the waitress and she gave me a piece of paper that had microwave instructions on how to warm it up and put sauce on. I told her that's why paid $38, for them to put the sauce on. Just do your job, what if I ate at the restaurant? Would they bring me a bowl to mix up wings/sauce ?

State line bar and grill is just a few doors down. This grill, it appears, to be in a converted warehouse space. It is likely the whole block was a warehouse which was sectioned into separate commercial properties. It has 20' ceilings with tin ceiling tiles and nice industrial wood flooring. They have live music and karaoke nights. They have a nice selection of food. Seafood, burgers, quesadillas, wings, salads, wraps ... I tried their mushroom Swiss burger which was huge, juicy and delicious. I needed to cut it in half to figure a way to attack it and a lot of napkins. A fun fact: it is the State line grill because it is in Bristol TN but you cross the street and you are in Bristol VA! If you are in the area, I highly recommend stopping in to try it out.

Sidewalks are partly covered so weather is not an issue, but crowds would make the trip more difficult. There are also several street buskers which can draw crowds, so just be aware and not in a hurry. You enter on the corner into the main seating area which is sort of separated by a hostess stand and the back of a booth. We were greeted right away and told to sit wherever we wanted. Seating is a mix of booths and tables and we selected a booth next to the window. Our server came right away and took our drink orders. There is also a board next to the hostess stand with listed specials. Looking over the menu, these were just regular menu items at regular prices. Our server returned and took our food order. The food took about 20 minutes to arrive, which was a little longer than expected. The bbq pork sandwich was dry and did not have a lot of flavor. The bun was fine but the dry meat made it harder to chew and took a lot of water to finish. In addition, the homemade chips were very crispy and salty. This plate left me parched even after drinking three glasses of water. The burger, however, was good. The meat was fairly juicy and toppings were fresh. The same homemade chips accompanied the burger and were also crispy and salty. The bathroom was in poor condition and appeared not to have been cleaned in some time. This was brought to our server's attention, who did not seem too concerned. Maybe this is a good place if you are seeking out music and alcohol, but there are many other options if all you want is lunch.

However, this place clearly gets packed in the evening. There were lots of brews and ciders. They seem to rotate quite a bit, and there's a mix between local options and options from other states. A huge plus is very LGBTQ+ friendly without explicitly being a queer spot. Rainbows everywhere. The bartender told us that a local podcast offered to make them coasters and he said yes, but only if they make them as queer as possible. They were playing some alt music on a record. Also, locals were super friendly and engaged us tourists in convo. Lastly, there's a limited selection of games- so we played a little trivia game and had fun with it. Overall, I would definitely include this spot when bar hopping again. It is an easy walking distance of a lot of great stuff and it was easy enough to get to, even though it isn't on the main drag. It's on a small, one way side street but there was parking nearby. When we approached the front door we instantly noticed they were LGBTQ+ friendly which made it even better. Our stop was early in the evening, probably around 5 so it wasn't busy. We were greeted by a friendly bartender and he gave us time to look over the menu. My first choice was the Limonada Hard Italian Soda. This was absolutely delicious! The tartness from the lemons was noticeable but not over powering and this was a very drinkable beverage. I don't like seltzers at all, yes this wasn't a seltzer but it did have a bit of carbonation that I did not mind. The other customers inside were friendly but not awkward, especially for us being the only 2 women in there at the moment the bartender was super friendly and they had a nice selection of local brews from the area. My wife ordered a peanut butter and jelly beer from the Knoxville TN area as her 2nd drink. PB & J beer doesn't sound so appealing but OMG it was phenomenal. It was the perfect balance and tasted like a PB&J liquid sandwich. Honestly I can wait until I find some in the store nearby. This is a nice, no frills, friendly stop yo grab a drink in Bristol.

Since it's located inside the casino, it's not a quiet or intimate dining experience, but that fit the mood of our evening just fine. Our server, Kansas, was friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout our meal. Service was prompt, and we felt well taken care of. I ordered the Caesar salad with salmon, and my husband had the Caesar salad with steak. Both entrées were outstanding. One thing I appreciate about Hard Rock Cafe is the consistency of the food and the generous portion sizes, and this visit was no exception. A fun part of the experience was watching the band warm up for the evening. There's also a bar area where guests can order from the menu while enjoying the live music. Combined with the casino, it offers more than just a restaurant meal if you're looking for a night out. The only minor drawback is that the casino that surrounds the Cafe is a smoking area. However, we didn't notice it permeating the Cafe. Overall, we had a very enjoyable experience and would gladly return.
