I held off writing a review of BE, but after reading some of the others I decided to add my POV, as a long time BE buyer & seller.
As a buyer: O...M...G! Yes, that is an authentic next season MM6 dress with tags for $45, in season Helmet Lang sweaters for $40, an 80's vintage Claude Montana sweater with leather appliques for $18, an unused/ in season Alexander Wang bag for hella less than wholesale, not to mention tons of DVF, Kate Spade, Joe's Jeans, Nudie Jeans, Acne, Dries Van Noten, etc, etc, etc. Now, based on other reviews I must be hallucinating but ... uuum ... nope. And for all those whinging that they could just go to the 'store' & buy these items new for a few dollars more ... please let me in on this store, because back in the real world it's more like a few hundred dollars more & most of the more expensive items still have store labels or they are samples (which means you may be buying the only one of it's kind).
To be fair there is a lot of Zara, Topshop, Steve Madden. But if it's a trendy/ seasonal item (as in, within 4 weeks it will be over) & looks good/ is in decent shape, snatch it up because paying full retail for a '4 week wonder' isn't the smartest way to spend your money. And as for looking down on certain labels (F21, H&M, etc), here's a tip from an old society lady I bumped into digging in a bin at the old East Side Conway (RIP): "if it looks good, is well made & fits you right, people will assume it's more expensive than the $800 designer version that leaves you looking dumpy."
And yes, to answer a few who complained: you will be digging in racks. Actually, that's what shopping is no matter where you go... well, unless you go to certain Madison Avenue boutiques & they know your size, style & you want to drink champagne while paying $1k++++ an item.
As for the sales associates ... I'm not sure what all the hate is about, because they are GOLDEN here. They actually WILL tell you if something doesn't look good on you, will help you find something you're looking for, & have an excellent hold policy in case you are unsure about buying something just that minute. Oh, & to answer several reviews: no, they aren't tailing you because they think you are stealing, they are encouraged at BE to... take a deep breath & put away the paranoia ... be helpful. They actually do mean, 'can we take that from you to start a dressing room,' 'can we help you find something,' & 'is everything ok?' HONEST. They really, really mean it. And it's amazing how much better your shopping experience can be when you're not also trying to juggle 15 clothing items, 2 pairs of shoes & a bag ... in fact, you can even let them start the dressing room, but hold onto 1 or 2 items you're trying to match ... eazy-peazy.
As for selling ... remember those AMAZING price points that make you jump up & down & smile while you're shopping at BE? Well, those are the buy prices. If the MM6 dress cost me 45$, the seller got either 1/2 in store credit (22.50$) or 1/3 in cash ($15). There's no rip off, they're not trying to lowball you & just you ... they have a great working model that keeps stock rotating at a pretty quick pace. They also buy for a certain demographic, so just because you paid a lot for an item doesn't mean it will work for them or they will want it. And yes, there are times I wonder why 1 thing is bought & not the other, so I will ask ... & the answers actually help me the next time I bring stuff in (& recently, thanks to stains on just 'dry cleaned' items, got me to change dry cleaners). Also, every buyer has different taste, so if you think an item should sell but didn't ... try the next week. Also, when they say they are 'full' on certain items they mean it, it's not a toss away line so, again, try the next week.
Oh, and one last point ... the staff at BE are NOT running some scam to get people to donate items in order to take them or resell them. The items are being donated DIRECTLY to Covenant House & if you're there when they pick up you can see the bags being put into their van. If you're not sure what Covenant House is, google it, then get on your hands & knees & thank whomever raised you for being sooo awesome that you had a house, food, clothes, stability when you were young & stop saying awful things like BE staff is stealing from homeless &/or formerly abused teens & children. read more
