Came here for lunch with my mom and sister on Mother's Day. I was really looking forward to trying the sandwiches at Fat Sangwich. Pulled into the almost empty lot and got a little nervous they were going to be closed, but they were open and accommodating. My mom and I ordered bloody Mary's and my sister got a mule. Drinks were very tasty! Again my mom and I ordered the same meal, the muffuletta sandwich and my sister ordered the Sicilian. Both were out of this world! Tried Barrel + Brine the other weekend. Saturday around 2-3 is a good time if you are a misanthrope. We tried everything on the menu except the pickle plate: pickled egg, pierogies, knishes, kimchi grilled cheese and the reuben. We also both had a signature cocktail: a mule and a bourbon drink with pickled cherries. Everything was delicious. We'd never had a pickled egg but would eat a dozen. They were served with pickled peppers and sauerkraut, all crispy and tangy and delicious. Pierogies were delicious. Knish had unexpected fillings but were also very good. I always expect potato in knish as the only place I ever get one is on the streets of NYC from a cart :D. Kimchi grilled cheese was surprisingly good. I've never thought of combining kimchi and pepper jack but it works very well. It's a messy sandwich as you inevitably drag out a piece of kimchi coated in molten cheese with every bite but well worth it. The Mensch (the reuben) contains perfectly tender savory corned beef and crispy tangy sauerkraut. I would eat a pile of either of these sandwiches until I burst. Drinks were unique takes on classics and very enjoyable as well. There is a courtyard outside with cornhole and picnic tables if you prefer eating outdoors. Staff were all pleasant and helpful. Got hooked on kombucha after a recent trip to Oregon. Tried a bunch of bottled brands from local grocery stores but they were NOT the same. Happened upon barrel and brine after doing a little research ( Buffalo does not have a big kombucha scene) and am so happy I did. They have a wide variety of interesting flavors like blueberry lavender, grape, cranberry lime etc...perfect swap from a glass of wine or a cocktail after dinner to a glass of kombucha. The kombucha (fermented black & green tea) is a treat and they offer many flavors such as ginger, spiced pear, hibiscus orange, and the list goes on. If you want to try a variety of flavors they offer flights as well. When we met a few friends yesterday you scan the code with your phone to look at the menu. Barrel & Brine offers a draft beer menu, kombucha cocktails, and a food menu that changes up frequently. The pickle plate is one of my favorites because they make awesome fermented treats such as pickles, kimchi, and kraut. We came for lunch on a sunny weekday, & were super happy with everything - the friendly service, the selection of kombuchas, menu items, & pickled products to go. The outside picnic benches were perfect for a breezy lunch: Pickle Plate - a little of every pickled veg! Cucumber pickles, bread & butter pickles, sauerkraut, carrots, cauliflower, pimento strips, jalapeños, celery - some had hot bites to them! Kimchi Flatbread - yum! Kimchi & melty cheddar on a crispy-chewy flatbread, hot out of the oven. A definite repeat! Crispy Potatoes - goat cheese crumbles & a delicious sauce over wedge potatoes. Really good! Knishes - we got 2 blazing hot, spinach & feta stuffed crispy-bottomed knishes. These guys were super yummy! Reuben & Mensch sammiches - both came with chips & pickle spears, on marbled, lightly toasted, lightly carawayed rye - w/the yummiest corned beef, swiss cheese, & sauerkraut on them. The Reuben had a creamy thousand island type dressing & the Mensch had a fab grainy mustard. Both sammiches were FANTASTIC, absolutely-get-these great! We also had kombucha flights & loved them all - pineapple butterfly pea, pineapple brown sugar cinnamon (my fave), blueberry lavender & strawberry lemon. Jars of Horseradish Dills, Kimchi, Bread & Butter pickles, and Garlic Dill, Classic and Red Kraut came home with us! The grassy back area had cornhole, & a bocce tournament area was being set up by a guy from the Buffalo Cider Hall next door. After enjoying Barrel + Brine's various pickles over the two years I've lived in Buffalo, I finally got around to visiting the restaurant in person!! I've been disappointed by the lack of Jewish delis or sandwich shops in Buffalo- but Barrel + Brine's "Mensch" sandwich fills that void in my heart!! I always appreciate a good sandwich, and this was one of THE BEST. In between two slices of marbled rye smeared with "beer mustard" (full of intact mustard seeds that added great texture and mouthfeel) is a few thick slices of perfectly spiced and cured corned beef- tender and meaty. Atop the beef was a slightly crunchy sauerkraut- lighter tasting, so the meat's flavor could really shine through. I am not usually a sauerkraut fan, but this one made a great accent. The menu says Swiss cheese is involved here- I don't have a memory of that, but that could have been because I was so distracted by the heavenly eating experience. I'd say this sandwich is up there with Katz' deli, which I used to frequent when we lived in NYC. Less meat than a Katz' serving but that just means I could eat it without hurting my jaw... I don't drink so can't personally comment on any of that-- but they have a fun list of kombuchas on tap, and are helpfully clear about which are higher in alcohol. My partner enjoyed a couple kinds of beer on offer, and thought it was a great selection to choose from. I both love that Barrel + Brine's killer sandwiches are always on the menu - and that a whole section of the menu is always changing. That way we're lucky enough to experience way more of the B+B team's creativity & culinary brilliance!! I've heard from several people that the Barrel + Brine entrance is hard to find, so I've included a map! Park on Chandler St across from Tappo and then walk in between the buildings into the grassy courtyard. I love the vibe of both this place and Chandler Street. It is hard to find, but it is in a court yard that also contains Blackbird. They offer a variety of snacks. I was drinking across the way at Blackbird, and my friend and I wanted to go over there and see what they had. They have fried Cheerios, which I was intrigued, but not enough to order them. I settled on the pickled egg, which was pickled in beets. At seedy bars there are always pickled eggs in a glass container waiting for the drunk people to eat. I've wanted to try a pickled egg while out drinking, but I don't go to seedy placed. This turned out perfect. I liked the flavor. I'm not really big into hard boiled eggs, but this was good. My friend ordered a pickled sausage, and she said she liked it. I have had their kombucha before, and it was good. read more

They keep getting better with every new product they introduce. The space they have created on Chandler is thoughtful and inviting both inside and out. Trust me: it is worth finding a parking spot on Chandler on the weekend because not only will their pickles and kraut and kimchi and pickled onions and kombucha and and and find their way onto your table daily, but oh those weekend specials. You have NEVER had a sandwich like the Mensch. And if you see their Cuban Reuben on the menu you had best order it. A pro tip: when you see their sold-out-all-the-time Bloody Mary mix available grab two. At least. It makes the best Bloody Mary (with vodka) or Bloody Maria (with Tequila) that you will ever have in your life. Add to that the gorgeous courtyard and slick decor and you'll be looking for reasons to eat/buy here on the regular. read more

My fiancé and I were in the area to go brewery hopping, and decided this would be the perfect place to get a bite to eat and start our day. Our visit started off strong with a great beer and a kombucha/gin mixed drink that was phenomenal. But then after ordering food, and waiting 30 minutes (the only other table was already served) our food was sub par. Our BBQ flatbread was cold. Not lukewarm, not cold from the pickled jalapeños on top, cold like it had sat out on the counter overnight. Then the star of the other reviews on yelp, the Reuben. Untoasted bread and 2 ....I repeat 2 slices of corned beef. The flavor was spectacular, and by no means did I expect a 2 inch stack of meat like in some of the reviews, but my sandwich had 4 slices of cheese....and only 2 slices of corned beef. We thought maybe it was an off day for the cook, but seeing the Rueben's that the two other tables got as we were trying to eat (no more than 5 minutes after ordering and sitting down compared to our 30 minutes) which were full of color from being toasted and stacked high with meat....I'm not sure we'd go back. Great location and great drinks....but it's a gamble with the food. read more

I learned this place was coming when I went to a benefit earlier this year and they had a table. They served some fantastic pickled things there. Yum. Could not wait for them to open. But I had to. For a while. And the date seemed to keep getting pushed back. But, the wait was worth it. The place is so cute. They have done a great job in making a welcoming place where you can sit for a moment. And perhaps eat one of your pickles. They don't have a lot of inventory yet, but it's coming. Soon I hope. Right now pickles, in a few flavors, are jarred and available for sale. Wow, really pleasantly surprised here! I think I shocked my husband a little as we were driving in (you'd never know this was here as you come in from Military), but it's like stepping into an oasis as soon as you enter the courtyard and then into the cafe itself. The menu is quite small and you order from the counter, but we both found something that sounded good. Took awhile to get our food because there's only one person working the kitchen, but we weren't in a rush so that was okay. In the meantime, we were happy sipping our kombucha and watching other people's (equally yummy) plates come out. We each tried a different kombucha, Holiday Cranberry and Elderflower Rose. Both were sweeter than the kombuchas I usually drink, so they must add a generous helping of sugar to the final product. Made for a nice treat, although I didn't buy any to bring home because of that. Between the two of us, we had a breakfast sausage and a bologna sandwich with a side of spicy kimchi tator tots. Definitely not a light/healthy meal, but very delicious! In the future, I'd definitely order something with the kimchi again and I really enjoyed the pickles to cut the grease on my bologna sandwich. Ideally, this is the type of place I'd come for a glass of kombucha and a snack plate (e.g. pickles!) while chilling in the courtyard on a sunny day. I have purchased several items from them and I have not one complaint about anything. Their Bloody Mary mix is to die for if you are a pickle fan. It's made with their pickle juice. Fantastic! They have unique fermented items, some of which are seasonal. I just picked up their once-a-year pickeled Manhatten cherries. People will fight over these, and they sell out in about an hour. Their krauts and pickles are like nothing else you've seen. Flavor combinations like IPA pickles, Chinese spice, and beet/caraway kraut. But if you are not that adventurous, don't fret. They have regular dills and kraut too. Look for these guys at stores and markets throughout WNY. Check out their website for where they are selling. read more

While chocolate is my favorite fermented food, all of them are worth a try. Why? Because the more we learn about the gut microbiome, the more we understand how eating fermented foods is helpful both physically and psychologically. This new business, in a very pretty area off Johnson Park, is just the ticket to get you started on your quest to find the fermented foods you like best. (Parking was easy-peasy.) They have a wide variety of pickles, Kimchi, and sauerkraut. By the time I got there today they were sold out of a number of things, but I bought a jar of Kimchi, $7 (or three for $6 each). It's pungent, complex, crunchy, and spicy, but not wildly spicy. I am looking forward to trying the bread and butter pickles, as well as some of their more unusual offerings. read more

Came here for a Sunday birthday brunch. This restaurant can be slightly tricky to find as its in the back of the chandler street building (a fact that they own and play up-awesome) but follow the large signage guiding you out front and you'll be just fine... Dining area is tiny but the restaurant is very new, trendy and nice regardless. The bar menu had extensive offerings of cocktails and a variety of Bloody Mary's (flights of different styles), mimosas and shots (say it with me 'pickle back') replete with local craft beers (tap and cans). Non-alcoholic drinks were limited but they did have multiple varieties of their own kombucha on tap. The brunch menu was small but had an eclectic blend of different items to please most palates. We had a group of five people and ended up ordering almost the entire menu. Every single dish was a complete home run. Every. Single. One. Pickles and fermented products play a key part in every dish (obviously) but in no way steal the show or become overbearing. The menu items we ordered varied but included an awesome pickle flat bread, an unreal corned beef rueben style sandwich and loaded tator tots which absolutely stole the show. The staff and owner were all super helpful and courteous. To the point of sending out a free pickle dish to try (Szechuan style pickles-trust me, you want these) and a birthday pickle (complete with candle)! All in all a fantastic food experience. As mentioned this place is relatively small but they do accept reservations. Also, it is a 'counter order' style set up but the staff is great about running food and helping out with some of the leg work. If you like pickles and fermented goodies you need to eat here. If you don't like that sort of thing (time to grow up, Peter Pan) you should still absolutely eat here! read more

I love everything about Barrel and Brine!! We were first introduced to them at Aurora Brew works when we purchased some horseradish dills and IPA dills. Outstanding. Then we started purchasing their sauerkraut because my husband makes his signature dish with it... the Reuben dog! Their sauerkraut is the best. Slightly crunchy, not mushy like the supermarket kinds. I visited the elmwood Bidwell farmers market this fall and stopped by their tent and purchased their Bloody Mary mix. I swear barrel and brine can do no wrong. Everything we purchase of theirs is AMAZING! Truly the best. I was so happy to be able to visit their storefront on the west side. What a cute little shop. We did not see any kraut in the fridge, so we asked. The employee was very happy to help us and get us 2 fresh from the barrel jars of their kraut. I feel like anyone truly from NYC (I lived there until I was 17) would understand the difference between a fermented pickle and one that is made with vinegar. Barrel + Brine offers both. They're NY deli dills are good, and flavorful as well as their bread and butters. I had the chance to have one of their fermented sours at the farmers market and it was delicious. The service is unsurpassed and owners are so sweet and you can feel the love in every jar/bottle of their products. My kiddos even love it and they are only four! I have tried sauerkraut from all over the U.S. and I used to have it shipped all the way from California because no local ones had the flavor and quality that I sought.
