Tasty traditional style food always served at Buff Patty. The reason that I give Buff Patty 3 Stars is because of their Buff Prices. I bought an medium sized oxtail dinner yesterday... It costs $9.50 and consisted mostly of rice with a few pieces of oxtail on top. Rice is the cheapest thing that a restaurant can purchase for resale and they charge a premium for it. Not cool Buff Patty. If you conducted a food cost analysis on any of your dinner plates, you will find that you could serve the same food at a lower price and still enjoy a healthy profit margin. Just moved into the neighborhood and decided to explore and found this gem. I checked yelp and noticed its only 3 stars so I didn't have high expectations. I went in during lunch hours and there was a small line. Took me less than 5 mins to place my order which isn't bad considering the time of the day. I ordered the oxtail over rice with cabbage and a chicken patty to go. The oxtail was amazing and the chicken patty was even better. The oxtail was full of flavor, and with the rice and beans and cabbage, I barely made it to the chicken patty. The chicken patty was amazing, the crust was nice and flakey, and it was stuffed for a 2 dollar patty. After trying the place out I'm quite puzzled as to why Buff Patty only has 3 stars. O.K. the food is not terribly spicy. There's none of that tongue-throbbing pain pushing you toward ordering another overly sweet Jamaican soda. But the food here still works. The medium is a nice sized dinner. I went with the jerk chicken, and received what might be the equivalent of a three piece meal. A drumstrick, and then plenty of breast meat. It had that wonderful allspice taste, with moist, smoky meat. It came with cabbage (couldn't care less), rice (good) and plantains (hit the right balance between crispy and cooked). The orange soda I purchased proved unnecessary but tasty -it was bottled in Kingston and came to the store through a local distributor. This is a takeaway establishment -food is placed in a neatly folded paper bag unless specifically requested, and there's no waiter service. There are three tables in the front and two counters for those dining in, however. One of the tables seats six, so feel free to bring a group. The line moved quickly -ten people in ten minutes. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the lived-in vibe. It's dark and barely decorated, with six or seven menus announcing various food offerings, from the soup of the day to the size of the different platters. The cheap tables can be pushed together or space apart as the clientele demands. It's not a place I come for my birthday, or bring a first date, but it's a nice everyday place. read more

Buff Patty is okay. I think it can satisfy a craving, but I'm not sure if it can stand on its own. I was on my way to pilates class on Myrtle Avenue and walked by Buff Patty. It looks like your typical take-out Jamaican place, but with nicer tables (with table clothes, yes, quite extraordinary). I stopped in on my way back from class. I was craving some Callaloo and Saltfish with Fried Dumplings. Unfortunately, they were out of fried dumplings [insert sad face]. I opted for the Callaloo with "food" (as Jamaicans call it) -- or boiled banana, yam and dumplings. It was just okay. It wasn't very flavorful, they definitely skimped on the fish, and the boiled dumpling was a little on the soggy side. But, overall, it satisfied my craving. I went to Buff Patty at 7am for a same day catering event at my job. Contact them at 10:30, the entire order was done and I had it picked up. A friend stated " the food was off the hook". Moving to the Fort Greene area with a Jamaican heritage, I was disappointed that there weren't much caribbean restaurants around. So imagine my happiness to find out about Buff Patty. Unfortunately, the food was not up to par with the reviews. I ordered oxtails, rice and peas and the mac n cheese. The rice was hard as if it wasn't fully cooked. The few pieces of oxtails was unbelievably dry with no gravy and lacked flavor. The only thing good about the meal was the mac n cheese and 2 plantains on the side. I couldn't even finish my meal. The only reason I will go back is to buy Ting (Jamaican grapefruit soda) which they don't sell in the nearby corner stores. read more

Not the greatest Jamaican restaurant but definitely the best that side of Brooklyn with a wide selection of Good Fresh Food. They have been around forever & 3 yrs ago I might have given them 3 stars. My friends & I use to take bets about how long the delivery would take when we were working, service use to suck but food use to be consistently average. Over the last 3 years service has drastically increased & food has been consistently Good. Service might take some time, not because of the workers but because they always have a decent crowd which is a good thing cause then the food is always fresh. They recently did over the decor in the place so it is a much nicer & comfortable place for indoor dinning, not that it was bad before. They have a Wide selection of really Good Fresh Food & the patties are always fresh & okay, about 7/10 & def better than Golden Krust. I was on the way to a Greek restaurant on Lafayette but couldn't find parking I doubled to head to the pita house. We found a parking spot in front of Buff Patty's and we needed quarters so we went inside to get change. The ladies didn't look like they would give us change so we looked at the menu and it looked good. I asked the lady for change and told her we needed to feed the meter so we could eat there. I ordered the ox tails medium lunch $9.50, 1st buddy ordered the jerk chicken medium lunch, and 2nd buddy ordered the beef stew medium lunch. All dishes had the rice w/ peas, veggies, and fried bananas. I think the chicken dish was $8.50 and the stew was $9.00. Each dish with a soda was $10.00 +. The food was good/tasty and we were happy with our meals. We all thought the price was a tab bit high for the food given. I would say 3/4 of the plates were the rice/peas/veggies/bananas and the other 1/4 was the meat. As I was eating my meal, I kept staring at the beef patties, so I decided to get one. I ask if she had mild or hot; and the lady told me, they're all mild. How can you be call a patty place if you don't have a spicy flavor. We are so lucky and fortunate to have this unassuming and incredibly delicious Caribbean take-out spot in the neighborhood. At lunchtime the crowds are consistent, and now I know why. The patties are always reliable for a quick snack while walking on Myrtle, but the real joy is in the incredible comfort stews, My favorite is the goat curry, which at $10 for a roti, is an absolute bargain and easily good for 2 meals. I have not stepped foot in this place but I definitely need to. I've ordered from them, I got a plate of oxtails and they're are the most delicious oxtails I've had since being in NYC. That's been my entire life. It's great portions the oxtails aren't covered in fat (cheap Resturant tactics) they're whole heartedly just great. I had to call in for a question I had about the menu I wasn't in the phone for more than 60seconds and that's including the ring time. I suggest ordering from here. buff patty offers an assortment of authentic jamaican dishes that unfortunately do not meet my flavor expectations as a person of jamaican descent. some dishes are okay, such as the jerk chicken, one of the only orders that promises at least 1 piece of white meat. it packs sufficient heat, but more often than not, you'll wind up with a drumstick - which is a less than desirable piece of meat in my opinion. the curry chicken has become dramatically watered down since i first tried their food 5 years ago. the meat is often brown and red inside, which is disgusting. in addition, the flavor is severely lacking. the patties are inconsistent; sometimes the crust is puffy, pale and nearly raw; other times it's thin, dark orangish, and flaky, the ideal for patty crust. i also dislike the inconsistency with which they prepare plates. typically, a small order should come with rice, cabbage and 2 slices of plaintain, but when they run out of plaintain (which is often) they neglect to mention it and you are lucky if your plate contains 1. the service people used to show you your food prior to bagging it, but they seem to skip that courtesy these days, hurriedly shoving your food into a brown paper bag to avoid dealing with your disappointment. requests for gravy on rice are most always ignored completely. i find that the female staff is particularly rude and unyielding. delivery is slow, so pick up whenever possible. bottom line: delve further into brooklyn if you're seeking great-tasting jamaican eats. this place routinely raises its prices while the food quality steadily worsens. that must be how they managed to buy those flat screen tvs. read more

I like this place, considering they have spinach patties and a decent assortment of drinks I like (ting!) but I haven't tried one of their entrees. Overall four stars. True Jamaican food. Service is terrible like all the other reviews here state. The owner, "Big Daddy," they call him is a fast talking pushy guy. After I told the guy at the counter what I was trying to order they then brought in Big Daddy. Um. Pretty simple, each entree comes with two side dishes. I wanted one entree of jerk chicken (delicious by the way) with two side dishes. Then I wanted an order of Oxtail with two DIFFERENT side dishes from the jerk chicken. Got it? Is this complicated. No. So after going around and around for like 3-4 minutes he seems to understand, goes to the back and brings me the two orders. The jerk chicken has rice and cabbage. The Oxtail has rice and cabbage. I tell him no and his solution is to sell me another two side dishes which I agreed to do I could get out of there thinking I could save some of the leftover food and eat it later. This is a great little one room joint in Fort Greene. It's run by an extremely friendly Jamaican couple who have been running shop on Myrtle for close to a decade. Their jerk chicken wings are $3 for half a dozen and they're delicious--crispy, salty and just a little spicy, too. I tried all three kinds of patties that contained animals (the vegetarian patties will have to wait for...never). The pastry crust is rich and flaky and the fillings are delicious. The chicken and beef patties (1.50 each) were a little bit thin, but the shrimp patty (2.50) was full and satisfying. But the best part of my meal was certainly the curried goat. You can get a small (one pint of goat, rice, and beans) for $6, and it's out of this world. Spicy, rich, tender goat meat that's clearly been slow-cooked for a long time. Today I watched a Buff Patty driver almost kill a cyclist and when the cyclist and I said something to the driver to be careful - he began threatening me and calling me names and started to get out of the car to get in my face. I took my phone out to record him and he stopped but when I called Buff Patty to complain after, they said they didn't care about how their driver acted. I certainly would not feel safe having someone crazy like this driver showing up at my door to deliver me food and as a pedestrian in NYC, i don't feel safe either. The food at Buff Patty is OK: it's sometimes good, sometimes not-so-good and rarely outstanding. The in-store staff are pleasant and friendly, and the in-store service is generally fast and orderly. However, I caution against ordering food from Buff Patty for delivery because their delivery service is very, very slow. The last three times I ordered delivery from Buff Patty I received my order over 1 hour and 15 minutes after ordering, and I only live a couple blocks away. read more

This was my first time trying Jamaican food; I wanted to see how it compared to Spanish Caribbean food and Salvadoran. They were out of the distinctly Jamaican dishes such as calaloo (collards) and salt cod with acki, so I had the vegetarian dish. For about $6, I was able to fill up on a good sized portion of curried potatoes, carrots, and broccoli over rice and beans, with a side of cabbage and a sweet, fried platano. Que rico! I was able to spice it up with some strong tabasco- type red pepper sauce. The rice and beans is similar to Salvadoran casamiento, but not as greasy and sticky. I washed it all down with a can of coconut water. They have homemade ginger beer and a variety of exotic drinks in the fridge, but at 230 calories a bottle, I didn't indulge. The staff was very friendly, and they kindly answered all of my stupid questions. So if you like mildly spiced dishes that taste like a marriage of Indian and Central American cuisines, then you should try this place. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Brooklyn. read more
