We went to Bucks expecting a great meal. I ordered the smash burger. It was overdone and dry. It has a horrible cheese sauce on the burger. My husband ordered the pizza and it was awful. Went here for breakfast today. My partner and I ordered the same thing. It was a scrambled egg dish, which was very good. It came with fried potatoes and arugula. The arugula was a great twist and went very well with the eggs. The taters were crispy and very yummy. For us, this is a place we will take visitors who like to see some of the local culture. I gave it 3 stars, as it is too expensive. The dish is $21, which isn't that bad in today's economy (it's not great, but comparable); however, the coffee is $5 per cup. Bucks was my favorite outdoor brunch spot on the Peninsula - until they removed their outdoor seating. I enjoyed coming here with my friends, family and little poodle. I am regretfully now in search of a new outdoor brunch spot on the Peninsula. The weather is so nice in Woodside for 9 months out of the year, I just can't bear to sit inside a restaurant for 2 hours on a beautiful sunny weekend day, no matter how good the food and company is. Always go to Buck's over the bakery next door. The bakery is pretentious. Whereas Buck's has home feel, fun, Skitch, and there's history. A Ruined Mothers Day Breakfast. Had a visibly pregnant woman at the "helm" of this restaurant unabashedly providing appalling, discriminatory customer service. Honestly we were the only people of color at this restaurant and it showed. So much for AAPI month. *eye roll* I accompanied my aunt, grandparents, and cousin to a Mother's Day Breakfast session that we had scheduled the day prior. An employee had informed and assured my aunt that even for a group, we'd be accommodated upon walking in. We got there about 15-20 minutes prior to opening at 8am. When we arrived inside and approached the register to be seated she coldly questioned, if we had a reservation. Her expression, her tone, her body language immediately came off as a haughty manner. I quietly dismissed it blaming it on rising early. We got seated and was serviced by a friendly waiter named Eric. He was the only bright spot of this entire experience. We got our drink order taken and brought to us within the first 20-25 mins. After that we placed 6 orders of a big buck breakfast, french toast, and an order of pancakes. Long story short, the wait time was insane. We received the last of our order at 8:57, almost an hour after we got there. Now, if the wait time was long and the presentation was good I wouldn't have minded. But let me tell you this. Even Denny's and Ihop does better in that presentation department than this place. All the toast along with eggs, steak, potatoes, and pancakes were haphazardly placed on ONE plate. We waited all that time for that. Maybe since we were sat at a little nook away from everyone, we were easy to miss? Whatever it was, the presentation fell extremely short. While we ate my aunt asked the waiter if we could get another plate ordered for an aunt that was on her way. He hesitantly replied, almost as if afraid, that he had to ask his "boss". The same woman comes back, nose flared, eyes wild, and hands on hip looking at me with accusing eyes saying "you told me only five and I told you you only have 1hour and 30 minutes." I replied calmly that I didn't know my aunt had others in mind. She went on to berate my aunt and to avoid getting my grandmother upset and anxious over raised voices, we grudgingly gave in. We didn't want to worry my grandma. What got me was how she acted as if she was doing us a favor to allow us a seat at the proverbial table excusing her behavior with "Im being nice to let you guys eat since others had a reservation and it will be packed." Emphasis on the will be packed. It wasn't the entire hour and a half we were there. Mind you, it already took almost an hour for our food to get to out table! She was adamant that we had only an hour and a half and that we didn't have reservations so we had to go. My other aunt arrived shortly after this first interaction with the lady. Upon arriving she wasn't aware of the initial debacle and asked if she could order her food. The waiter again referred to the lady, she came in the same aggressive manner and asked us we were lucky to be accommodated without a reservation and we had to leave. My aunt said no, she was going to eat with her mom. Again she told my aunt (who was clearly older than her) no, that she's not having it and left. Sadly I had already paid our meal + tip (that came out to a whopping $242) to this restaurant because the waiters were nice, but it was all shadowed by the lady and her horrific behavior. I've never seen nor experienced such appalling service at a run-of- the-mill diner before. I hope that this lady reads this review and does better. I'm glad my mom is not alive and went with me to this place because I would have been sick to my stomach if my mom and I received this treatment. This lady at the restaurant was fortunate we did not want to cause a scene since my grandma was present and it mother's day. Advice to said lady, there's already so much negativity in this world. We live nearby, and every few years I will find myself back at Bucks at someone else's suggestion, remembering why I hate coming here. Ok, I get it - some people love Buck's. It's been around forever and there are stories of high powered Sand Hill VC types meeting here to make deals over kitsch and burgers. I'm not personally taken by the nostalgia and lore, so all Buck's leaves me with is a bland, uninspiring menu and the omnipresent, lingering aftertaste of old fry oil and excessive salt. It's a place to buy expensive, boring food in a "playfully" ugly setting. On par with Hobee's, which I detest for similar reasons (on the flip side, if you love Hobee's, check out Buck's). The people who work here seem fine and they earn back a star. read more

We got there right before lunch started so there was a mix of egg dishes and smash burgers at our table. Took a bite of everyone's dish and everything was so good. Especially because they could make me a dairy free chocolate shake. The forgot my side of bacon but we cancelled it since we had ordered so much food. Everything in point. When the roommate ( adult son) wakes up on a Saturday and wants to take you to Buck's, you jump on the opportunity. I tried to tack a short hike through the Edgewood Nature Preserve onto this venture out to Woodside, but my kid shot me a look, that let me know that I was pushing it. He had a point. This is destination dining- a walk through of this restaurant is like a trip through a kitsch museum, and the from and back to Burlingame almost qualifies as a road trip. This establishment is under new management as of 2020 and the breakfast/ brunch menu is a shadow of it's former self, but the three trips that I have take have confirmed that less may indeed be more. The offerings seem streamlined and almost curated to offer the best of what Bucks did well after years and years of catering to well- heeled cowboys and peninsula hikers and bikers looking for a fueling station and some fun. The inside of the restaurant was sparsely populated with diners opting for the sunny rustic outdoor patio. The Buck's of old would have had aline out the door in Saturday at 10:30 am, but business today, at least outdoors was approaching robust. By the time we left, the patio was full and inside would have been the only choice, particularly for larger parties. While we ate, my kid and I talked about his college classes and professors. A little tear welled up in my eye, as I remembered him as a three- year old sitting in a booth across from me with his brother, marveling at the memorabilia and exclaiming displeasure at " sharing a milkshake" but then, marveling at the size of said milkshake and happily claiming the " metal cup. Ahhh i miss those boys . Ok... back to reality. No milkshakes today, but i have read some reviews that mention that the giant overflow cups are a thing of the past. I do love my brewed iced tea at any time of day. The staff works as a team and our waiter, Eric, paid attention to my extra lemon request and i could easily catch the eye of a bus boy or other wait staff, who kept refills (only 3 today) coming. My son got the Southwest Scramble and I,uncharacteristically ordered Jami's pancake stack. The mixed berry purée, fresh raspberries and real maple syrup spoke to me and all were delicious. The plate sizes were kind of ludicrously small, (somewhere between a saucer and a salad plate )making the reasonable sized portions appear enormous and making eating without overflowing onto the table nearly impossible for my son. The pancakes themselves were on the small side, which suited me just fine ( I remember enormous pancakes from Bucks of old and three small pancakes ate better than a giant one. ) Also it is worth noting that Bucks doesn't do that automatic service charge thing, so tip generously. Back to the iced tea... charge me whatever for it- if you keep freerefills coming I can justify the price and , it winds up making my meal! One of the ways to my heart is to bring a pitcher so i can refill my own glass. ( I miss you #Nini's and i love you Stacks) $5 is pretty standard. Post covid, restaurants are trying to recoup losses suffered. I see little evidence of that here, except for smaller menu and no more colossal portions. No trip to Bucks is complete without a little trip around to check out the decor in each room. It is still here and as cute as ever. Every time, I discover something new. This was a glorious morning and Bucks smaller menu makes it easy to choose what you really want to eat. Iced tea game is strong. My son melted my heart by waiting until i got up from the table to order to- go cup of tea while i was taking pics inside. I him. Do I miss waiting in line? Nope. Bucks can even deemed a decent value for the money spent, which is practically unheard of in 2022. It comes close to earning that elusive 5th star- just lacking a smidge of the homeyness of the Bucks of old. One of my best brunch experiences in 2022, and i would highly recommended. Bucks is a long-time Woodside restaurant with a very loyal clientele. The food is great. This time we enjoyed salads: the Cobb was amazing. Bacon, avocado, chicken, cherry tomatoes, blue cheese, and hard-boiled egg - all drizzled with a balsamic dressing. The black pepper bacon had a hint of sweetness to it, which was the perfect pairing when sharing a fork with a bit of blue cheese. This salad is everything you want in a Cobb. We also tried the crispy chicken salad. This had avocado, almonds, cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, romaine, and butter lettuce, topped with a crispy fried chicken breast and drizzled with a Dijon herb dressing. Delicious. Although the restaurant was busy, the service was spot on. 5 stars for service and food. One small star was knocked off for a rather odorous, unclean bathroom, and the fact that parking can be a bit of a challenge here. It won't stop me from coming back, though - as the food at Bucks is really fantastic. And don't forget as you're walking out the door stop by The Village Bakery next door and grab one of their colossal cookies for dessert. read more

Very overpriced. I came here because they got a shoutout from All In Podcast but I regret that decision. They are very overpriced and the food isn't that yummy. It costs an extra $2 to add a tomato to a tuna melt. Root beer is $6 but its taste isn't good enough to be worth $6. My own meal was yummy but the rest of my party couldn't finish their meal because the taste was so bad. (None of us ordered the JCal onion rings). There are lots of indoor booths which is nice but the bathrooms are kinda dirty. Overall I regret coming here. read more

When I ate here a couple weeks ago, the service was prompt and responsive-- they were able to move us indoors when we realized how cold it was going to be outside. Not that the deck is undesirable - it's a great place to watch the denizens of Woodside go by as they run their little errands. We stopped in here for the first time tonight, after my fiancé drove by and thought it looked like a really good place. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our first meal here. We chose to eat inside, because there are so many unique trinkets on the walls to take in. We noticed that there was a scavenger hunt available to kids to do around the restaurant while waiting for the food to come. Definitely a family friendly spot. We started with the calamari and a Coke for my fiancé and a glass of Cabernet for me. The pour was generous and reasonably priced, refills for the Coke were free. We found the service to be prompt and very friendly. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, it came out quickly and it was hot. There was nothing spectacular about the calamari, but we really enjoyed it along with the dipping sauce. For my entrée I went with the tuna melt, it comes with fries and a really lovely arugula salad with pickled onions. I will say that this was probably the best tuna melt sandwich I have ever had. The sourdough toast was perfectly done and crispy. My fiancé ordered the fried chicken sandwich and he said it was probably one of the best fried chicken sandwiches he has had. Overall we really enjoyed the atmosphere, the service, and the food. We will definitely be back. We noticed that there were a lot of regulars in on a Friday evening. And that is always a good sign. OMG THIS RESTAURANT IS AMAZING FOR BRUNCH. I low key might come here every weekend for a delicious breakfast... (I'm serious) My fiancé and I drove past this the other day while exploring the area and decided to come for Saturday brunch. It was extremely delicious and we are already talking about going back next weekend. The Big Buck is 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 slices of bread, 2 bacon strips, and breakfast potatoes. I am a huge breakfast potato girl and these were probably some of the best (if not the best) I've ever had. I was extremely hungry and almost didn't finish! I'll probably opt for the little buck next time (one of everything). They also serve milkshakes with brunch! In addition to the DELICIOUS food, the interior is super interesting. Lots of funky items on the walls and ceilings... A skinned anaconda, a Bart Simpson doll, flying nuns... So many cool and interesting things to look at! Side note - the coffee cake is gigantic. I was here a long time ago. It was mother's day and my family made a reservation for 12:30 pm. We luckily reached at noon and forgot our time and went inside the restaurant when the staff at the reception told us we were early, we thought we would hang out until our turn came but they immediately said there's a place for you to be seated. We ordered our drinks, I ordered their cactus margarita which was great in taste and went straight to order food, fish tacos, burger, pancakes and French toast with granola. The server was great, wished me and then took our drink order first and the food came after that, it was perfect with timing and helpful with everything. I really enjoy the vibe at this place, the food is generally tasty as I have never come across anything bad. It has a lot of history and so we always feel good to come here. Well. My meal was not as expected. There's a sharpied masking tape label marinated with the beans in my huevos rancheros. It was disgusting to say the least. Reporting this, the server said there's nothing he can say or do. That it wasn't his fault (technically true!). I am not sure what happened to this place. The huge menu shrunk to few items. The food it's just ok this time. My fish was the bucks eggs - potatoes were almost burn, toast but no jams anymore. Since people will read this because they are thinking of eating, rather than visiting an iconic Silicon Valley hotspot/antique museum, I have to rate two stars (rounded up from 1.9) because the food is definitely lacking. I started with Buck's Onion Soup - it was sloppily presented, with a good few ounces of a soup puddle in the saucer dish and cheese dollops on the plate. I know any good French Onion Soup has gruyere dripping down the side, but my lord, it needs to be done tastefully. The sourdough crouton was small and already disintegrated and the cheese in the bowl only covered about 1/3 of the surface. I think they should be using a smaller bowl size - it would look much better, or they need to add more cheese on the top (not to the side or forgotten on the plate). The actual broth was okay, not anything special. I also ordered the 'savagely popular' Buck's soft tacos. They are big and filled with LOTS of meat. Unfortunately, the meat (both chicken and beef) was really dry - so much that no amount of sour cream, guacamole and salsa could save it. Disappointing, because the homemade sweet corn tortillas were really good - I could have eating just those alone. I also wanted to order their blended juice of the day (orange juice-strawberry), as advertised on their 'Naked Lunch' menu. Unfortunately, they were out of it. At 11:00am. Hmmm.... The reviews are spot on about the restaurant having so many decorations and displays to look at that would rival many a museum. I could seriously spend a whole day there looking at everything. Went there early afternoon in a Sunday. Got a table tight away. Good was, as usual, excellent. Eggs Benedict had a nice fresh sauce. Potatoes were crunchy. The presentation was very attractive and the flavor very good. I love crusty bread so next time I will ask for a steak knife to cut it! Nice thick slice.
