Really nice lunch spot after our hike at Wunderlich County Park! Lots of interesting customers who come here, including motorcyclists and wealthy couples. While the line outside looked intimidating, Alice's system for taking orders before you enter is really efficient. The restaurant is much larger than it looks. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with heating to keep comfy when it gets a little chilly. Alice's serves both breakfast and lunch/dinner. We were craving burgers, so that is exactly what we ordered. Our food came out within 15-20 minutes. My burger was cooked a tad more medium than medium-rare, though I still wholeheartedly enjoyed it. The bun had lots of structure, and the beef patty was nice and juicy. We did order a side of fries, as the burgers come with potato chips by default. Both sides were tasty. I would gladly come back again to try the rest of their menu! read more

This is Alice's, it is an institution and I would always recommend anybody to go there for the whole experience. I have been many times, and I don't expect much from the food. I'm leaving this review because the meal that I just had was terrible. Hoping the owners see this and make adjustments to the ingredients. I had the Redneck Benedict. It advertises applewood smoked bacon, however, underneath the eggs was a crushed pile of bacon bits, and this was no thick, tasty bacon that people are used to when they are promised Applewood smoked bacon. It looked like the thinnest, oiliest, crispy bacon you could imagine, crushed down into tiny bits, with a pile of it placed under the egg. The country gravy was extremely salty, as was the bacon. The country gravy had no true country gravy flavor, and was quite dark for a country gravy, which should usually be some shade of white. The eggs were properly cooked, the biscuit was mediocre, and the rest is history. Go to Alice's, don't order the Redneck Benedict. read more

I visited this place many times on my motorbike about two years ago, and yesterday, I returned with my two dogs to enjoy a BLT in the garden. Being the only brown person in the entire restaurant, I'm unfortunately no stranger to experiencing racism and feeling unwelcome in places I visit. Yesterday, a woman began complaining about me and my dogs to the manager, which brought back those uncomfortable feelings. But what happened next truly touched my heart. The manager stood up for me and my dogs and kindly defended us. The way he handled the situation reminded me that there are still people who choose kindness, understanding, and humanity. As someone who has often felt like I need to be cautious about simply existing in certain spaces, this small act of support meant so much more than people might realize. It helped me regain a little trust in humanity and feel safer being myself without constantly fearing discrimination. First time visit this restaurant. We picked here because this is pretty much the only breakfast spot available before head out for hiking, so during holiday weekend there was super long line. Vibe and environment is quite nice, feeling very cozy and relaxing just like staying at home. Staff service also very friendly, but parking is super tough to find, we need circle around quite a bit. Regarding the food, the menu has lots of choices, so I decided to order the steak and eggs. But honestly quite disappointed. The steak was definitely overcooked and a bit tough. Also the sunny side up eggs, you can tell they pre-cooked it in bulk earlier--it turned cold already and the edges not crispy at all. If you just want the holiday vibe and looking for the one and only breakfast spot in this area, you can come try (or maybe because you have no other choice haha). I have been going to Alice's for a while and love the food. Today I brought my mom who is visiting from out of town. The man at the front was very sweet and helpful with our accommodations! It was a beautiful day today so we sat outside. We ordered a pizza on the gluten free crust and the eggs Benedict. When they brought the pizza, the edges were burnt so we had them remake it, which was a bit annoying. We wanted to swap the potatoes for fruit but I guess they misunderstood us and removed the English muffin so we also had to have that one brought back. Once we got the food back and tasted it, they were both exceptional. I highly recommend this place for food an ambience although the hiccups were frustrating. read more

On a whim figured I'd give this place a chance for a brunch and boy am I glad I did. The food came out fairly quickly and not only did it taste great, but they gave you a good portion and the prices were cheap (compared to the bay). Being up in the mountains was a cool feeling having massive trees all around you with both indoor/outdoor seating available with outdoor shaded areas as well. You order up front, pick your table and they'll bring it out to you based on where you place your "buzzer" (cool system). The hamburgers are great and very juicy, with a large combination of additional toppings on offer (the barbecue is a little dry, though). The setting is lovely: one is dwarfed by towering groves of coastal redwood trees. It is impossible to get a seat here at peak times, and in fact even difficult to find a park, so popular and iconic is this place. But most of all, I want to say that the servers are wonderful people. There was one day I was road tripping along Skyline Ridge when I started feeling rather ill. We were just about to reach Alice's, so we parked the car and I had to get out, and the bench in front of Alice's was just the place I needed to lie down for an interval. They kindly brought me water and their good spirits and allowed me the space to recover, for which I'm very, very grateful. I hope Alice's stays around forever. read more

This is no place to dress up for, as it is in the middle of the woods. It is definitely a good idea to wear warm layers in the winter as it does get pretty chilly! The restaurant does have heaters outside which is convenient. But I was glad to have my hat, mittens and warm coat on! You enter the parking lot and you have entered a sea of beautiful vehicles!!! So honestly you get a nice show coming here and admiring all the beautiful sports cards: Porches, McLaren, Ferrari and even one Lamborghini! You enter the restaurant and you come across a tent with the menu on the side. You order there and then they give you a little clicker and you find a place to sit down in the restaurant. The people working there are super friendly and helpful- suggesting some popular dishes!! The food: I had low expectations from a place in the woods. However the food exceeded my expectations! I ordered the potato Benedict and it came with a delicious sauce and a salad. You can also choose to add sides and I added a sausage too. Everything tasted so fresh! My husband got their popular omelette dish and it was very filling! The rye bread they have is super tasty, I had to steal some from husband!! We also got coffee and we were asked often if we wanted a refill which was nice! So all in all this place totally exceeded my expectations. From the friendly service, to the delicious mouth watering food to the ambiance it is a great destination for breakfast or lunch!! Not to mention you get a free show of seeing a plethora of incredible looking cars enter the area while you eat. So I suggest eating outside in the patio to have that view! Stopped by on the way home from the hike. A decent amount of parking but it was a weekday so I'm sure weekends would be a different story. There's a gas station and restrooms nearby so it's perfect if you've been traveling around the area. You basically walk up and place your order and the menu is HUGE! You must be committed to going here because the drive there not for the faint. If you get car sick, motion sick, do not subject yourself to torture. It's a gorgeous, stunning route full of towering California redwoods, open your window and breathe in the air for 100% rapid oxygenation into your lungs ... but you'll be driving and driving--curves, and tuens, more curves and more turns, it's never ending. It's Jack Kerouac style on the open road begging for a sports car or Harley. If, as we did, you're going in a mongo sized family sedan, it's not pretty. When we got there, it was worth it! Picnicky, outdoorsy, laid back, party kinda vibe but civilized and low key with food to match. An extensive menu with food for everyone, e.g. they had not one but two soups of the day--one meat and the other vegan (white bean and kale). It was beautifully prepared, though I was hoping for more of an Italian taste, it had some garam masala, not my jam. We got their nachos, which was fire--everything on it, and though we got no chicken or steak on it, it was so loaded and well dressed, we didn't miss the meat. Their tuna melt excellent and Beyond cheeseburger we also loved. Their eggplant with melted cheese grilled on a panini fantastic, all comes with house chips. It was a treat for my husband to get their non alcoholic guiness. Their customer service is fantastic--warm and on the ball, they take the time to answer questions and work as a team. The parking can be challenging, especially at peak times on weekends, despite having their own free lot, but we managed. The seating is indoors and outdoors (covered), casual but structured in the best way possible. The prices a terrific value for their portions and quality of preparations. Love love love. read more

Having seen it on my way to hikes, I've long been curious about Alice's restaurant. And on my second attempt, we made it! The first time I was going to visit, my friend had called me from Alice's Restaurant's parking lot, letting me know that it's completely congested (inside the parking lot!!!), and suggested we meet elsewhere. On my second visit, while the parking lot was still quite full, we lucked out with another customer leaving, and parked right by the entrance to the restaurant. Pro-tip: folks at the restaurant let us know that there're plenty of parking spots nearby on Skyline. Food here is decent; it's your typical American fare, with pizzas, salads, burgers, etc. We especially enjoyed the pizza! The vibe is causal as others have said, where you walk up to the cashier, place you order, then head to a table of your choosing with your #, and the staff will bring you the food when ready. What makes Alice's Restaurant really special are the people, the charm and beauty of the restaurant and surrounding areas. Owners and brothers Jamie & Andy stopped by separately to say hello and chatted with us briefly; they made us feel welcome and at ease with the place. They both seem super down-to-earth and friendly! In addition to seating areas on the deck and inside the restaurant, there're lots of tables in the back of the restaurant, amongst the tall redwood trees. There's live music two nights per week too. I can see why so many people rave about this spot! While I probably won't make a trip specifically to come eat here, I'll definitely return when we hike in the many neighboring parks (e.g. Windy Hill, El Corte de Madera, etc.)! read more

This was our first time visiting, and we were a little confused at first about how the whole process worked. When we arrived, there was a line of about 20 people outside, which we assumed was for seating but it turns out that's actually where you place your order before heading in to find a table. Luckily, the line moved fairly quickly, and they have large menus posted outside so you can browse and be ready to order by the time you reach the front. One thing I wasn't a big fan of was having to pay and tip upfront before knowing what the service would be like. They did have a cash tip jar as well, so I held off on tipping with my card and decided to leave a cash tip later based on our experience and I'm glad I did. Once we placed our order, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there was tons of seating available inside, out on the patio, and around plenty of picnic tables, even though it was a busy Saturday afternoon. We were handed a pager, and as soon as we sat down, it buzzed. I went up to the pickup area and found it was just our drinks, so I headed back to the table. About 10 minutes later, the pager went off again and I went back to grab our meals. I had a classic cheeseburger and chips. It was simple but really well done, the burger was juicy, and the bun was great. As we were eating, I noticed that while most people picked up their food like I did, some tables were getting food delivered to them. Not sure what the system is there, but it seemed a little inconsistent. That said, there were staff roaming around checking on guests and offering drink refills, which was a nice touch. Everyone we encountered was super friendly, working hard, and had great attitudes. It made me feel good about leaving a proper tip at the end. The setting was really charming, surrounded by woods and a small body of water. It had a relaxed, almost rustic vibe that made the whole experience feel unique and memorable. My friend and I stopped by yesterday afternoon after a 5-mile hike at the Open Space Preserve nearby. The location is convenient for hikers and bikers, but parking is a challenge. The lot is very small, and while there is some street parking, it was pretty packed. The menu has a wide range of options -- breakfast pizzas, burgers, salads, and more. My friend ordered a coffee and a breakfast burrito, and I ordered a root beer, herb fries, and a half-and-half gluten-free pizza (half wild mushrooms, half Italian combo). Ordering is done outside where they give you a beeper, then you find your own seating. Indoor seating is limited, but there is outdoor seating with heat lamps. We managed to sit inside at the bar area. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Unfortunately, the food was a bit hit or miss. My fries were cold, and although I ordered herb fries, I was given garlic fries instead -- they weren't great. The gluten-free pizza was very small, and with the extra $3 charge for the gluten-free crust, it didn't feel worth the price. The flavor was just okay, nothing memorable. On the positive side, my friend's breakfast burrito was quite large -- she only ate half. The breakfast potatoes, however, were very small and looked a bit greasy. Overall, Alice's is fine for convenience and location, especially after a hike, but given the price and food quality, it's not somewhere I see us frequenting again. read more

This is a cool little spot out in the beautiful mountains amongst the trees. It's a gas station/restaurant catering to a lot of people out for a drive through the scenic Santa Cruz hills. The food is good. You order outside and they bring it to your table. Employees are great, and if the line is long they still work to get you through quickly. On my recent visit there were four of us and I was the only one with an issue...they made the wrong pizza so they had to re-make it, but they were quick to do so and it wasn't a big deal. The food was hot and the drinks were cold, just the way you want them. Come early, parking can be a nightmare, but it's such a cool place, you have to visit. read more

The hot chocolate is so comforting especially when it gets colder during the winter. They have an extensive menu to order breakfast, lunch or dinner with a good local beer menu. Plenty of seating on the deck and out in the back. It provides a great place to hang out and eat amongst nature. The service was helpful and fast. They brought out our food to the back area, despite giving us a buzzer to go pick up our food. Not sure why they hand those out if they aren't used. We ordered the Jalopy Burger. This was a good burger but there is a lot of bun. The bun was very dense. It comes with homemade chips that were overcooked and lack taste. We ordered the plain fries, that name is accurate. Again over cooked and no seasoning. Finally, we ordered the Pulled Pork sandwich based on the servers recommendation. The pork was extremely dry! We had to dump all the BBQ sauce on it to moistin it a bit. The same bun as the burger.
