Very solid modern brunchy diner in HMB! I came with a group and we ordered a variety of dishes. The standout winner was the lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry compote. It wasn't overly sweet, was nice and zesty, and the perfect portion for sharing. My friends didn't like their eggs benedict very much though, and the chicken apple sausage was overcooked. Sadly, they also didn't have any pie. Overall, this is such a nice little diner in HMB and the food is much better than most diners. If you order right, you can have a great meal but their dishes can be hit or miss. read more

Breakfast- a solid 2.5. "French" omelette and potatoes were fairly bland. This blandness was exacerbated by the food coming out at room temperature. Other reviews mention food not being so warm (heat lamps don't spare hiring wait staff). They did comp with a separate plate of potatoes, but those were actually overcompensated for due to clearly being over-reheated food (they came out hard and dry, almost charred). The OJ was fresh squeezed but tasted off (like a mildewy orange, let's say). Being from a region of the state where oranges are aplenty, freshly squeezed OJ from well selected produce is a taste that gets ingrained in our taste buds. Service- a solid 2. The wait staff, while superficially eager to please...don't seem especially experienced or professional, at least at the service industry threshold that meets the price point of dining here. The physical labor of bringing out the food and attentiveness were decent. Beyond that, it was fairly bad. Examples: When we first walked in, a hostess/waitress smugly suggested we dine at the bar (with barstools) and (with a toddler). Sure, he's tall. She all but shrugged when I pointed out the toddler. The wait was not 30 minutes and we sat at a visibly open table. In addition, I'm not sure if it was a language barrier (doubt it) or some sketchy thing where wait staff are told to tell patrons (with children) that they've "run out" of the $8 side of a pancake ...and that the "only option" is to order the $18 ricotta pancakes or the $12 kids menu pancake. Trust me, this is a breakfast venue and they have pancakes here. Buttermilk or not. This isn't about the 4 bucks to me... Our wait staff member was bordering on being downright argumentative and defiant to get her point across that no side pancake (of any kind) was allegedly available. Truly bizarre. On the way to the bathroom, I asked another wait staff member (who I think is actually a manager) if they indeed had the side pancake item available, and this person confidently confirmed that they did. I then overheard this person speaking to our table's wait staff member about it and we were still not brought out a side pancake (and still charged more, until we protested appropriately). If you don't want people to order a side pancake for their kid, take it off the menu... Value- A solid 2. I have a peeve about places that skimp out on the number of eggs they use per omelette. Yes, the cost of eggs has skyrocketed on occasion, but an extra egg is like the cheapest thing you can enhance a breakfast plate with when you dip into these price points (tech bro money or not). When it comes to pricing, I also understand having local Bay Area "tourists" and some actual locals as clientele. Pricing felt geared toward the tourists and therefore the experience as a whole left me feeling tourist trapped. For $70+ on two adult plates of breakfast and a quasi pancake side (plus coffee that was not refilled and orange juice that tasted like the oranges might have had a fuzzy blue coat)....I felt a bit overall robbed while walking out. I get the impression profit is being maximized here while overhead is being kept a bit too low. A bon appetit it was not. read more

We visited Johnny's since we stayed the night in Half Moon Bay and read this place was good. It was okay, drink wise not much to offer. They do have TWO menu's, breakfast and Brunch. We ourselves were not aware of this .I was looking forward to Breakfast options at 1230 ish. Of course we got there at 12 but had to wait for 20-30 mins. I got THE JUNIOR which was in the brunch menu. What I really was looking forward to ordering was the biscuits and gravy or brûlée French toast. My son got a kids waffle since they didn't serve the breakfast for kids during brunch. I also wanted to order the famous mimosa they have called DOLCE FAR NIENTE . But they only sell it BY the whole bottle, wish they did it individually just a glass of frozen orange juice sphere. Maybe one day I'll go back form the whole bottle . The vibe was casual with good music playing at just the right volume, not to loud but just loud enough. Food: Old Town Scramble Presentation was nice but, despite the ingredients, the flavor was just weaker than I thought it'd be. I couldn't taste the chorizo and either they forgot the Serano salsa or it was cooked into the dish? The slices of pasilla pepper were the most impressionable flavor of the plate. I was also a bit underwhelmed by the serving size, but especially only having 6 potatoes on my plate. Despite this, the potatoes were pretty well-seasoned with herbs/spices. Restaurant had about 5 tables outside. Crab cake Benedict - 5/5: this was a perfect combination of a poached egg on top of a breaded crab cake over spinach on top of a cheddar biscuit. All covered in hollandaise sauce. The cheddar biscuit gave it a wonderful texture and flavor over a traditional English muffin. The crispy potato's were also very good as well. Definitely recommended. Brûlée French Toast - 5/5: wife orders French toast everywhere we go, but first time she saw this offered. A French toast with a crispy caramalized crème brûlée top. We were sat outside on an overcast day in Half Moon Bay. It was doing that thing it does in Bay Area weather where it is sprinkling outside, seemingly about to rain, but it really is just super cloudy. I was a little worried we might be a chilly, but it ended up being fine. The service was okay, nothing spectacular. But it fits with the type of place that it is. I asked for water with my coffee, and we never got it. When we got our food we asked for water again and the server was like "oh, you want refills." But we never got water in the first place. It wasn't until she brought ok the way we pitcher that she realized we had no water. Oh well. The service was otherwise totally fine. I went with the Tweety's Breakfast bowl, which was two poached eggs served over jasmine rice, with sautéed shitakke mushrooms, sautéed spinach, avocado, and roasted potatoes. It was so good. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked, as were the mushrooms. The roasted potatoes were crispy and buttery, and well seasoned. I left satisfied but feeling like I hadn't totally derailed my diet. My husband went with the croque madame, which was massive and very rich, with lots of cheese. Don't try to do a lot after eating this. He said it was very good, but he was just super full and very much needed a post-meal walk to digest. I'd give Johnnys a solid 3.5 stars. We stopped by on a weekday for a late lunch. This place is happening! The decor is utterly delightful, with retro diner vibes. Despite it being a weekday, the staff is quite busy given the many customers. We stood for a few minutes by the small entrance, wondering what one had to do to get a seat; as none of the staff approached us, we ended up asking other customers who were waiting, and learned that we could just seat ourselves at the bar, or on an outdoors table. We grabbed a couple of seats at the bar, while the staff busily walked by us. We managed to get the attention of a staff member, and got ourselves a set of menus to order from. Meanwhile, two other customers who had been seated for some time at the bar still had menus in front of them, obviously trying to get the attention of waitstaff to place their order. The two of us shared a fish sandwich w/fries, and a shrimp louie salad. The fish sandwich was decent with a brioche bun, fried fish, and fries; all of it freshly made and tasty. Great food, great vibes, great service! We're a family of five and stopped by first thing Sunday morning. My fiancée and I live in town, and my parents and sister were visiting from Reno. There was a short wait, maybe 10-15 minutes, but it flew by. We took a quick walk to the visitor center and came back just in time for our table. The hostess was very friendly and welcoming! Our server, Pablo, was fantastic. He helped us with a few questions about the menu, and when my fiancée asked for his recommendation between the pancakes and the egg sandwich, he suggested the egg sandwich, so that's what she went with. When the food came out, they set a blueberry pancake in front of my sister, who had ordered the Minnie Mouse pancake. She looked a little confused, but then Pablo explained that he'd asked the kitchen to bring us an extra pancake to share, just because. This is not your typical diner, that's for sure (and that's a good thing in my opinion). The menu wasn't as long as what you would find at a typical diner, but I did not mind since I found many dishes that sounded incredible. We did not have reservations for Sunday brunch, and we were told there would be a 15 minute wait, and it was pretty much 15 minutes exactly. There's indoor and outdoor seating available, and it is so well decorated inside. The bathroom (there's only one) even had a beautiful orange bouquet of flowers at the sink. For food, I ordered the Chilaquiles, the Herby Greens, and Johnny's Potatoes. Everything was delicious! We ended up being one of the last tables to finish (they close at 2pm on Sunday), but we didn't feel rushed at all. I would definitely recommend dining here. read more

Blondie and I never make it down here in time, when we visit Half Moon Bay. Today, we went to Johnny's first, and were very happy we did. First, I'll note that this "diner" has class. Cloth napkins, actual candles on the tables, nice glasses, and the half and half is served in a little pitcher. Service was fast for a little place with limited seating. We were by the window, with a nice view of the street. Anyway, it's really all about the food. Best chilaquiles I've had, with just the right amount of spicy heat. Check out the picture. Blondie had a creme brulee type French toast, and didn't have to add any syrup; it was plenty sweet. Plus they had a hot chocolate with whipped cream and Oreo atop. Brunch menu was fine, but not as exciting. Typical items you'll see for the most part. Allen and I shared the Johnny's Chilaquiles and Fish and Chips. - portion sizes are so small - food tested subpar. Chilaquiles better than fish n chips - fish n chips never again. So overfried, the picture is the true color of what our food looked like. Portion was crazy small too - the smallest I've ever had of ordering a dish like this. Fries were okay. We were seated next to their windows, which are immaculately well kept, no finger prints, no food splatter, no non sense...I'm impressed! The potatoes are so crispy and light - perfectly sized serving. The Breakfast Sandwich is something special - don't be fooled by the name. Great combination of egg, avocado, bacon on local bread. However, after checking my bank statement later, I noticed that we were charged more than what I had written on the receipt. Luckily, I kept my copy and can confirm we were overcharged.
