First time trying this place after hearing great reviews from some friends. We ended up ordering two pizzas. One had sausage and banana peppers and the other was mushroom and green peppers. The crust was a cracker crust and not super salty. It even had some bubbles in it, which is my favorite part of a pizza! The sauce was also a nice balance to the cheese and toppings. Pretty good pizza overall. The thing that we found most interesting is the number of slices they managed to cut. We got medium pizzas and there were probably 25-30 squares. Went to Jade monkey and after a number of drinks decided to get carry out from Bucks, as you can order and bring it back to the bar. It was my first time having their pizza. We had pizza with extra sauce, sausage and mushrooms. It was absolutely amazing!! it is cracker thin crust so if that is your thing, I say definitely give it a try. I think Buck's pizza is best if you have been drinking a lot because I could see this tasting much better when under the influence. We heard about Bucks from people who hang out at Chief's bar across the street and where you can order the pizza and they run it over. Thus my theory on the impact of alcohol on tastebuds. We ordered from our home and I drove the two minutes to Bucks to pick up the large pepperoni and onion pizza. Unlike most places it comes in a bag which didn't seem to help or hurt the quality. The pizza crust was cracker thin and worked well with the toppings. And yes as most have noted it was greasy. Overall it was good not great but the overwhelming sensation was that I was eating a frozen Tombstone pizza that I pulled out of our oven. Look for coupons online to save a couple of Bucks... Some time ago I had a craving for simple, greasy thin crust pizza -- the sort you get at that secretly great dive bar that your friend tipped you off to. My search for that without all the trappings of said bar paid off in the form of Buck's Pizza. It's a tiny takeout only pizza place that is as no frills as you can get: 3 sizes, thin crust only. Adding toppings is more reasonable than most pizza joints, however, as they have figured out the secret we all know: meats are more expensive than vegetables. So unlike 95% of the pizza chains that charge $2-3 for any topping addition Buck's has different prices per topping related to how expensive they actually are. That said their pizzas can get a little expensive depending on your preferences. A 14" plain cheese starts at $14 so a couple of meat toppings will get you close to $20. read more

Buck's Pizza is a Madison institution. The menu is simple - only three sizes of thin crust pizza and soft drinks. It's carry out only, but the Jade Monkey Cocktail Lounge is open next door, and Chief's is across the street, and both allow you to carry in so you can enjoy at the bar. The pizza is very thin with appropriate topping portions. The pizzas can get a little pricey as you load up on toppings, so this isn't your spot to go crazy. I recommend one or two toppings. You can also request extra sauce, light cheese, and "well done" if you are feeling extra creative. I don't find dramatic consistency issues as other reviewers have noted. It sure seems to be the tried and true pizza place that is preferred by many long time Eastside residents. In an area saturated by crappy chains, Bucks is good pizza. Heck, they are in there rolling out thin crust doughs fresh the old school way. The bag it comes in (compared to a box) isn't very convenient and you can't get a pie bigger than 14". The bill can also rack up quickly if you pile on the toppings but isn't completely unreasonable when you realize it's the city. Staff is friendly, the place is clean enough, but parking when the VFW is busy can be tricky. Carry out only. If you're a little early just run across the street to Chief's and slam one down. read more

I seriously can't believe no one has reviewed Buck's yet. Buck's pizza is my all-time favorite thin crust pizza ever. The sauce is just right, they cut the pizza into little squares, and the crust is crackery and crisp. It's take-out only, but they deliver. Pizza in a bag! Yes! Who doesn't like a steam filled bag holding in all the awesomeness that your pizza contains. You don't have to worry about this pizza getting cold on the ride home. This is a small pizza shack (kind of a hole in the wall) with excellent square cut sliced pizza. I used a Groupon the first time I went which included a six pack of soda (cans). One of the better Groupons I've purchased. Now that I've had their pizza a few times I can genuinely say it's not too bad. It's a great change of pace to the usual triangle sliced pizza in a box, and I appreciate that. I wish the they put more cheese and toppings on. It seems rather cheap, so for that they got demoted to 3 stars instead of 4. The thin style crust was nothing special, it was crust dusted with corn starch. So yeah.... Definitely not the worst pizza for take out on the east side of Madison, but not the best. As for pricing, I would suggest looking for a coupon or Groupon. I was very disappointed in the pizza this time. I hadn't had the pizza here in a couple of years and we couldn't wait to order it when my mother came to visit. The taste was excellent, but lacked toppings majorly. We ordered half pepperoni, green olive and mushroom and the other half ham and pineapple with extra cheese all over. Absolutely no taste of pineapple and very few of any other topping([we even pulled up the cheese and looked). The cheese obviously was over cooked in order to have done this. The older woman at the counter (when I had picked up the pizza) was extremely rude. The gentleman on the phone had apparently given me the incorrect total price for the pizza with the coupon and I had gone in with the exact amount of money that he had told me. (I had even double checked with him on the phone that, that is the total price with the coupon and he said yes. I told the woman that I can go out to the car and get the two more dollars that she came up with and she snottingly said "just forget it" and pointed, "your pizzas right there". Wow, talk about rude. Eh. Their pizza is ok. I bought a Madison Perks deal and took a chance to try them out. The crust is incredibly thin. I am not a huge eater and I ate half of their large before I got full. Their sizes are not generously portioned out. Their largest pizza is still pretty small. We paid a bit extra for more toppings. I got my usual sausage and green pepper. I had one or two sausages on each square. More like one on each truthfully. It was very "chintzy" for lack of a better term. I want to like them more, but they are just sub-par. The only reason I did not give them a one, because the pizza was decent. It tasted ok. Nothing stood out to me. I appreciated that they put the pizza in the paper bags. I've been eating pizza from Buck's for over 20 years now. And it's still that damn good! As Timothy pointed out, they don't waste their effort on promoting an image. Instead, they are all about their pizza. They made me a fan of the square cut. Who really wants a large ring or dry crust on the outside of their pizza anyway? It's just unused landscape for toppings. I have yet to have a better thin crust anywhere in Wisconsin. This place is well worth a trip for some carry-out. read more

Love this place because of it's simplicity. No dine-in, no stupid cheesy stuffed crusts, no cinnamon pull apart bread bites or some gross giant cookie dough thing that you cook at home - JUST pizza. Thin crust pizza that's made fast, consistently good, and uses minimal waste in that they use paper bags v. cardboard boxes for pizzas. Buck's on Cottage Grove Rd is our go to on nights when we're in a hurry, don't want to cook, etc. I especially like the fact that eating a Buck's pizza consists more of eating cheese/toppings and less so of a big pile of cooked dough. read more

It is the area from Chicago north to Milwaukee where the Italian mafia laundered their monies by opening up pizzarias along the Lake Michigan coast. I really like the pizza here but give it 3 stars instead of 4 because WHAT IS UP WITH THE STUPID PIZZA BAGS?! Why can't you use boxes like everywhere else? The bags are endlessly frustrating to me.
