I finally tried Buckhead's after hearing so many people call it the best steakhouse in Richmond, and I have to say... I was disappointed. The first thing that threw me off was the location. When we pulled up, it was in a shopping center right next to what looked like a hardware store. For a restaurant with the reputation and prices Buckhead's has, I expected a more upscale setting. The service, however, was excellent. The hostess was friendly and welcoming, and our server did a great job throughout the meal. I ordered an espresso martini, and it was fantastic. My date ordered a fruit-based cocktail, and he really enjoyed his too. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the hype. I ordered a steak, my date had the lamb chops, and we had the standard potatoes and side. Across the board, everything tasted like it was missing seasoning. My steak was cooked below the temperature I ordered, and while I know a lot of people love a thick-cut steak, this one was just too thick for my taste. Without enough seasoning, it ended up tasting bland instead of flavorful. It really needed something as simple as seasoned salt to bring it to life. Considering the prices, I expected a much better dining experience. Great service and great drinks weren't enough to make up for food that didn't impress me. Overall, I'd give Buckhead's a 5.5/10. Based on my experience, I wouldn't go back, especially with so many other restaurants in Richmond to try. read more

Friday the 13th turned out to be lucky! We snagged a 5:15 dinner reservation that wasn't even available two days earlier. The wine list is a mile long but I finally settled on a shiraz. We started with scallops that were absolutely delish. The field green salad had a semi-sweet, tangy balsamic vinaigrette, and the Caesar came topped with anchovies. I went with the prime ribeye, crusted in pepper just like our server suggested, and it delivered. Meanwhile, the halibut didn't stand a chance... the plate was completely wiped clean by the end of the table's attack. This was an outstanding dining experience in every way, memorable in terms of both the fare and the service. I highly recommend it to those looking to sample what an upscale steakhouse is truly like. I was surprised by how few reservation slots there were even a week away from the date in question, though that was the first clue to how in-demand Buckhead's is. On arrival, it has a handsome interior with nice wood paneling, and attractive tables. We had to wait a few minutes after our reservation time but it wasn't too severe. Our server was prompt, helpful, and friendly, advising on the wine list and the meal offerings (though we had planned ahead and knew exactly what to get). For starters, we enjoyed an espresso martini and a Port in the Storm, an incredible combination of Angel's Envy Port Bourbon, Tawny Port, and chocolate bitters. I loved the drink so much that I will now be (carefully) attempting to recreate it at home! While the appetizer menu did not hold much of interest for us, for entrees we ultimately both opted for the steak fromage (delicious 11oz filet mignon with gorgonzola), which came with a caesar salad, a potato dish of choice, and roasted vegetables, along with some locally-baked bread. The steak of course stole the show, though everything else was quite good as well. We had a bottle of Kiona with the steak and it was a thoroughly enjoyable pairing. For dessert, we grabbed a chocolate ganache cake and the clover roll bread pudding: for looks the cake wins hands down, but the bread pudding is far and away the best thing on their dessert menu in terms of taste and texture. Just thinking about it now is making me jealous of past me! While prices restrict it to special occasions and lottery wins only, it remains a special treat worth looking forward to. I am already plotting a return purely to have a drink and dessert, which is still enough to burn down a budget, yet still a trip you won't regret! Overall: 4.5 stars --- Pros: - This place is indeed a local institution for good reason: quality is in everything you will enjoy here. - Outstanding fare and libations you will think about for a long time to come. - Service is excellent and personable, a far cry from the misery of most service experiences in our modern era. - Plenty of easy parking in the lot out front. The lobster bisque was creamy and the onion soup hit the spot. The onion had the perfect balance of cheese, bread, onions, and broth. My husband got the ribeye and I got the filet. My family have been to Buckheads probably 7 times now since I initially wrote them a 5-star review. Coming back with an update now after having had several more experiences. In summary, they have some talent in the kitchen when it comes to preparing steak. Every Filet Mignon I've ordered was prepared expertly. (I always ask for medium rare and it has been spot on every time). The outside of the establishment doesn't quite give the right impression. It's quite nice inside. Perfect place for a romantic date night. One thing I've learned recently is that I would never host a function here in one of their private rooms. My wife and I had an experience in a private room with roughly 30 people. The food was wonderful, but the service was inattentive to the point of being rude. When we first arrived, the waiter took drink orders... but the drinks never arrived. We made several attempts to flag the waiter down -- to no avail. The staff even forgot to serve my wife salad (and it took us a long time to flag someone down to correct the situation). Honestly, it's a zero star review in terms of service. So, I'm reducing the previous 5-star rating to a 3 at best. We might come back sometime, but when we need to host an event for more than 8 people, it certainly won't be here. I went for a friend's birthday and ordered a mocktail because I am pregnant. Unfortunately, my drink was mixed up with someone else's at the table, and I was served an alcoholic martini instead. When I brought the mistake to the waiter's attention, he was rude and insisted that the drink was a mocktail, even though it didn't match the description on the menu and clearly wasn't what I had ordered. Everyone makes mistakes, and I would have been completely understanding if the situation had been handled differently. What was most frustrating was the dismissive response and lack of concern, especially given that serving alcohol to a pregnant customer is a serious mistake. Came to Buckheads with my gal pals for a nice dinner and Buckheads did not disappoint. Walking into the restaurant immediately gave me speakeasy vibes. The place radiates warmth and elegance because of the low lighting and wooden accents. The staff is very professional and knowledgeable. They offered to escort me to the ladies room rather than telling me how to get there which is always nice. The food was really good I ordered a steak and potatoes. The steak was cooked seasoned perfectly and the potatoes were Devine. We also shared some onion rings. The onion rings are massive, I've never seen onion rings this big and they were really good. We had a very disappointing visit to Buckheads for a special occasion. It was our first time but I don't think we'd give it another go. It started with us waiting for our table for about 10 min while they got it ready and once we were seated we seriously waited another 10 minutes to get menus. It was the weirdest thing. Buckheads has been on my list for awhile and I finally decided to go with a group of friends for a bday , a first time experience for us all. While this place has been around for a while it's in such an unassuming location... a strip mall! But parking was plentiful which I liked. Upon entering I got more of a homey/cozy vibes .. not super upscale but not rinky dink either. You can tell they have their regulars.. its like we stuck out to everyone bc everyone stared upon entry LOL. The hostess was kind of rude and stand off ish and would not seat us until our exact reservation time even though it was 8pm and tables weren't full. The food: I ordered the French onion soup as an app and it was delicious. I love a good French onion soup! For my main entree I decided on the filet medallions with the crab with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies as my side. I will say everything was seasoned to perfection and the portions didn't leave us hungry (which you don't get often in a steakhouse) My only complaint is that while my steak looked like it was cooked medium as I requested the texture/chew was a bit tougher than I'd expect for a filet. The entrees also come with your choice of salad which I chose a Caesar. The dressing lacked some depth but it was edible. Our waiter was nice however he didn't come to check on us as much as we'd like. We didn't get asked if we'd like more cocktails or refills on our drinks. We were skeptical at first glance but once we got inside, we noticed it was very nice. As for dinner it was delicious. I had a Cesar salad, salmon with vegetables and a potato cake. I will start with sharing this was not my first visit to Buckheads. They are 5 star every time I go with both service and food. The restaurant is upscale, so dress a bit nicer! It's cozy and intimate. Service is always on point. On one visit a few years ago my steak came out just a tad over cooked from what I ordered. Seriously not that much over. I didn't even say anything. Next thing I know the server shows up with a new steak and says he noticed my steak was a bit over so he asked for a new steak. Then I got to take home what I couldn't eat! On the most recent visit our server made lots of recommendations and steered us in our selections. We shared the scallops appetizer as a table of 4, so we each had a scallop. SO DELICIOUS! Perfectly cooked and delicate flavor. The salad is always yummy with house dressing. You get bread and butter also. If you eat steak, order steak. I have been tempted to order a pork chop ( I seriously love pork chops) or fish, but I know I will be sorry when everyone else's steak arrives. The steak is so tender, you could use a butter knife. It has great flavor and is cooked to perfection! Now, I am not a huge fan of the special potato cake. I forget this each time I go and order it again, but there just isn't anything special. Hopefully I remember to try a different potato next time. I have to dedicate a special section to this pecan pie. I don't even like pecan pie. I ordered the creme brûlée but ended up eating my husbands pecan pie. It's more reminiscent of a tart. Typically pecan pie is overly sweet and has a lot of that custard. Not this pie. It has just the right amount (not a lot at all) and the sweetness is perfect. I honestly cannot wait to go back to have this pie again. If we lived closer I might go and sit at the bar just for that pie one evening. Honestly disappointed sums up our visit. Our waitress was very absent the entire night, so much so another server had to keep stopping by to check on us. We had a reservation but had to wait at the bar until our table was ready on a weekday. Then when we got our table, we didn't get water for 10+ minutes. The steaks were decent. But considering what we paid, we were disappointed. There's a difference better searing a steak and charring one, and they beyond charred both the ribeye and filet to the point where that flavor was over powered by the char. I went last night for the first time! No idea the inside was so huge! They have socially distanced tables and all staff wear masks. I ordered the ribeye- medium rare with the potato cake. The potato cake was so delicious, it had other seasonings and flavors inside. My ribeye came out slightly underdone but wasn't that big of an issue since I knew I would reheat it up for leftovers since it was so big! The seasonal veggies and Caesar salad (plus anchovies) come with it as well and those were yummy. I also go the escargot for an appetizer and they were the best!! Not many places in RVA carry escargot, so I was super excited to see they had them. It's definitely a MUST TRY! I also got the Godiva Chocolate cake but that was very blah. We landed at Buckhead's after trying a few local steakhouses and I will say we weren't disappointed. I had the lump crab filet mignon with potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked and the ratio of crab meat to steak was great. They didn't hold back at all. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. He was very pleasant, took our coats, and gave us the run down since it was our first visit. I decided on the filet with crab meat, which comes with a side and salad. I also started off with the lobster bisque. It was good but I wasn't quite getting lobster from it but it was well blended and creamy.
