We ate in the catacombs. We arrived on time with prepaid tickets, which the staff had no record of. We stood around with another party of 4 experiencing the same problem. The 8 of us were seated after sometime in the far back corner. Drink service was interminable. Dinner, the vegetarian option had obviously spent some time under a heat lamp and was the equivalent of airplane food. There was much joking by the actors before and during dinner as a part of the show. At one point I pointed a plastic award at the actor and demanded drink, a pitcher of water was poured on me. Later the same actor brought a towel to dry off and he knocked over the one drink I had all evening. He did not apologize for anything and didn't replace the drink. Wow! What a wonderful gem of a place with great food, exceptional service and an intimate atmosphere both inside and out! We visited my parents in Pa Thursday evening and came here for dinner. Mariah was a very attentive waitress. We had great drinks, a wedge salad, French dip that melts in your mouth good! , pasta with shrimp, fish & chips...all great. We went during a recent visit and loved the beer! We were unable to get the tours but the staff was so friendly in talking to us about the venue and showing us what they could. Will start off saying I do love this place and the history but the past several times I have been there they have felt Plainly out of sight when it comes to food in my opinion . Last night I was there and ordered the beef dip , it came out honestly looking like quarter pound of dog food in a sub roll with unmelted cheese , I'm not really a complainer or griper but it was really that poor looking I had to , so I went to my typical just to be safe even though the past 3 times that itself hasn't been good the cheesesteak and it came out looking the same . Very little meat on a sub roll looking the same just darker then the beef sandwich . The alois fries are not like they used to be and the wings by the pound are really 6 or 12 and at 2.00 a wing I expect way more . The positives out of this my servers who I forget his name was excellent and the nice young woman who took time out of her work day to give my step daughter a quick tour was awesome . I say these comments to not hurt the business but hopefully to bring the business back to the greatness it once was where every meal at anytime was very good , good luck ! read more

The bartender on today Morgan with the long blond hair was the must unprofessional person I've ever seen working for the public...This young lady was loud, pushy and didnt care what came out of her mouth including racial slurs!!! Despite the restaurant steady on Sunday afternoon , she wouldnt even pitch in to help. Now mind you the other servers werent that much better.When a guest would leave the restaurant, the servers would speak about how they complained or had to do extra for a tip!!!WOW Together several servers and Morgan bartender want on & on about what food they didnt like at the restaurant where they worked!!! WTH like this was crazy!!! The bartender said they sold " Hitler Brocoli" ....SMH I have been to Bubes several times before years ago & everything was great .This time everything want to HELL. I would like to leave a review of a recent visit where the bill was upwards of $200 dollars after tip and applicable taxes. The seats were extremely uncomfortable lacking any type of cushion and the table was made of plastic. When the meal was considered "fine dining" this should absolutely not be the case. One guest in my party asked for steak to be included with the salad. When the meal arrived , the steak was literally put on top of the lettuce not even sliced as should be expected. The steak was lacking flavor and based on my visual observations, lacked any type of seasoning. The meal did not come with any type of bread which is a staple item in any fine dining establishment. The bill comes and we were charged for refills on soda and were never notified prior to refilling. While the point is not the literal monetary amount, it's the idea of simply notifying a guest of the added cost when refilling a drink. I was extremely disappointed with this meal and the lack of fine dining essentials. While the ambiance was certainly appealing, I will not be returning and would not recommend to friends going forward. We had a great visit today, we sat in the Biergarten on this beautiful late summer afternoon, it truly does have the feeling of sitting in a Biergarten in Germany, our server leah was exceptional, she was very attentive to our needs and her service was outstanding, everything we had was delicious, we had the soft pretzel nuggets and fried pickle chip appetizers, I had the mt. Joy burger which was cooked perfectly medium as I ordered, my wife had the piggy burger which was also cooked perfectly medium, both burgers tasted incredible, our drinks were very tasty as well, my wife enjoyed her fuzzy mimosa and spring cooler, I really enjoyed their first glimmer German Pilsner and Oktoberfest beers, we will be back again as we truly enjoyed our meal. read more

I'd really like to give them more stars, but the first thing that comes to mind to describe tonight is "meh". We'd come here before for one of the dinner mystery shows, and that was pretty good. We came tonight for their "ghost stories and s'mores" and decided to get dinner beforehand. They have coke products, not mentioned on their menu, and un-sweet tea. Not a very busy night, it took the hostess a few minutes to figure out where to seat us, then about 15 minutes before someone came to our table. Our waitress didn't mention any specials, but I overheard them from another waitress and told my wife about the black bean burger, which she got. I missed the cream of mushroom soup and the kabobs, which I would have ordered, had I known. I only heard about them from a table being seated as we were leaving. Burgers were good, average "pub burger flavor combos" found at most places today. The fries were a bit overloaded with salt for my liking. They used large flakes of sea salt. The two beers I had were ok. For being a "brewery" i was really hoping to be wowed. The Heller Bock was better than the Blackberry Lager. My wife had a margarita, and said it too was just ok. There are a few games outside in the Biergarten, and I didn't catch his name, but someone worked for almost an hour to try to get the pool table to work, but sadly, he wasn't successful. We were hoping to make this program a summer thing for us, but I don't think the 45 minute drive is worth it. This was good for a one time experience, and if you live local I'd definitely check it out. read more

The place is charming, the staff professional and the food was pretty good and the brewed beer was excellent. I recommend it! I almost didn't go because of the reviews but then figured now would be the best time to go as I'm sure the health department is watching carefully. I also walked around the place and it seemed very clean. I EVEN PEEKED in the kitchen. Clean. Ok follow me here: I recommend this place conditionally. The condition is that the owner post something rather than remain silent. Now a message to the owner: Mistakes made in the past: own up to them and post something. Tell the public how things are different now. Do not remain silent just speak your peace. I understand there were some disgruntled employees but not responding to yelp reviews I believe is a bigger issue than being shut down in the past. I had a very positive experience and had an amazing evening at your venue. Your staff was professional, on point, the last piece of the puzzle is talk to the public. Unbelievably bad service. While we were in the lobby, the hostess called down to the catacombs to check on when our table would be ready. The fellow on the other end said he'd call back when the table was ready. As soon as the hostess hung-up, the phone rang, she picked up and it was the guy saying the table was ready. The hostess slammed the phone, said she was going to "punch him in the face," then she took us on a tour. Tour was sped through and unnecessary. Our server must have been trying to be as bad as possible. He asked us to pay and tip him ASAP so that he could go home. Kept telling us we were the last table of the night and everything left in the kitchen was the "bottom of the barrel." It was 7:30pm! Our cocktail waiter ran into our table twice. Drove an hour and a half to get here for a valentines dinner with my boyfriend. Great history and atmosphere but we were sat in the catacombs at a table with a filthy linen. They moved us after we said something. Not a huge deal for use. Things like that can Be overlooked. We got the crab "dip" as an appetizer. It was basically and over cooked crab cake in a soufflé dish. Then we both ordered the ribeye med rare and it came out very rare. Topped with puréed "mashed potatoes" and cold vegetables. We ate in the catacombs. If you want to feel like you are eating in the caverns below a medieval castle in Europe, this is the place for you. I was skeptical before our visit due to reviews written many years ago. You need only regard the new reviews. Current ownership runs a clean tight ship that does this museum of atmosphere and coolness justice. The upstairs bar and Biergarten were also incredibly cool. FOOD: expensive but justified by your surroundings. My NY strip was perfectly done -medium rare- as requested with a delicious crust on the outside. The crab dip, though tasty, was a bit disappointing. More cheese and cream than crab and an unusually small portion size. 4 oz.? 6 oz.? smallest crab dip I've ever received. The Crustini bread served with it was delicious. Usually need more bread to eat all of the crab dip. Had bread left over. Bube's beer was tasty and a fun adventure to sample. Brace yourself for the tour that escorts you to the catacombs. I was not ready to be informed that tips were welcome before being taken for an unsolicited tour. I did tip our tour guide, and well. She was extremely professional and the tour was well conceived and executed. If they were selling tickets I would have bought tickets for this tour. So as it turns out tipping our guide was our own choice and quite the bargain. Food 4 stars. Service 5 stars. Cleanliness 5 stars. Coolness 10 stars. We will be going back. read more

I really don't like to give bad reviews, but the terrible entrees we endured this evening coupled with the outrageous cost of said entrees warrants nothing more. We had the Mushroom Tart which was okay. $8 Both of our meals included a roll (good), salad (good house dressing), grilled vegetables (green beans-possibly blanched/definitely not grilled), mashed potatoes (good), rice (good), pretzel with salty cheese "dip". Free. I had the Chicken Coopersmith which is described as "a sautéed chicken breast with garlic, mushrooms, onions and thyme finished in a creamy marsala sauce served over chive-butter potatoes ". The chicken was completely inedible. Terrible. I could not even cut it with a knife. There was one tiny sliver of a mushroom. Not good. $29 The husband had the Seafood Mornay. Described as "lump crabmeat, scallops and shrimp in a rich Parmesan and Swiss cheese sauce served in a pastry shell on a bed of rice". The scallops were the size of peas and there was little pastry shell, and the "sauce" had no taste. He didn't mind the rice. $34 We got the cheesecake to get the taste of out of our mouths. If "upscale dining" means poorly prepared and over-priced meals, then this is the place to visit. Our evening catacomb dining experience started with a tour of the brewery which ended at our table in the catacombs. We were able to experience the end of several such tours as they traipsed numerous other diners through our dining area as they were given a similar tour which consisted of varying "facts" depending on the enthusiasm of the host. After being seated, we ordered a round of drinks with the anticipation of enjoying a well-brewed beer from the brewery. Our drinks arrived at room temperature, which is what you might expect if you were in the United Kingdom ordering a pint of beer, but not in the United States and definitely not at a brewery that should know the acceptable temperature for beer. To top it off, the beer that was brewed on sight was not palatable, and ended up taking up space at the end of the table as a replacement beer (brewed elsewhere) was ordered. We thought the temperature of the beer might have been a simple error on behalf of the staff, however, our second round also arrived at room temperature. Our meal commenced with a salad which would at best be considered an average "run of the mill" garden salad consisting of iceberg lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. The salad lacked any other greens or accoutrements that you might expect from an "upscale dining" establishment and was topped with dollop a "dried tomato" dressing which had very little favor. I ordered the French Cut Pork Chop which was served with mashed potatoes, vegetables, and was topped with a berry balsamic reduction. The vegetables consisted of string beans and carrots. The carrots were cut diagonally, which is unfortunately where the chef's creativity ended. The mashed potatoes were made with sour cream in such proportion that the sour cream was overpowering and made the potatoes just sour to the taste. The berry balsamic reduction had no depth or complexity to it, and tasted more like a cheap jam that was spooned out of a jar. The pork chop however is where the chef truly excelled. Never before have I encountered a pork chop where the chef has been able to extract ever ounce of moisture from the meat. If not for the pitcher of water on the table, I might have passed out from dehydration as my salivary glands worked overtime to try and re-hydrate the pork chop. The Crab Cake Dinner was ordered by two in our party. It was reported that the crab cakes were good. However, don't let the description of "[t]wo jumbo crab cakes" mislead you. The crab cakes were small and definitely not worth the $34.00 price tag attached to them. The Mediterranean Dish with chicken added was another fail. This was nothing more than a large portion of pasta with bell peppers, onions, olives, capers, etc., but lacking of any true "Mediterranean" flavor. While priced at $24.00 (plus $4.00 for the chicken), this dish reminded me more of a $14.00 dish available at a local Greek diner. While the Chicken Costello was also ordered by someone in our party, I did not inquire as to how it measured up as I was already looking for the check so as to put this dinner in the rear view mirror. This is not to say that every aspect of our evening was a disappointment, our server was engaging and had a good sense of humor. However, I did find it a little off-putting when he advised me that he hadn't added to the 18% automatic gratuity (for parties of 6 or more), because he wanted me to be able to tip based upon my experience. My recommendation is that you not be misled by the claim of "upscale dining" on Bube's website and seek out other truly fine dining establishments. read more

This place is outstanding! We attended a murder mystery with some friends, and had the most amazing experience. The mystery was so much fun- the characters were wonderful, and we enjoyed interacting with them immensely. Our dinner was also outstanding. We had several courses, and everything that was served was unbelievable. It was all well prepared, well seasoned, and timely served. And finally, we got a tour of the building, and history of the brewery itself. This place is a treasure, as are the staff. You will never have an experience exactly like this anywhere else. Please give them a go and have a meal or attend an event- you will not be sorry. read more

A group of us went to The Catacombs this past Saturday.. I went online and found the menu... my partner and I decided we'd eat the crab cakes .. we got to the restaurant and the crab cakes weren't on the menu.. the waiter, very nice, told us of some extras on the menu including crab cakes...so e ordered them.. also another couple ordered them also... btw.. the price of the crab cake dinner online was $32... the crab cakes arrived... room temp and no lump meat showing at all... mediocre at best... then the bill arrived.. $75 for each crab cake dinner!!! What?? Are we in nyc ?? I showed the waiter the menu I saw online and he said.. oh, that's old... really? They did end up taking one dinner off ... I posted a small review on their pic of the crab cakes on their fb page.. and both were removed and apparently I'm blocked.. very professional !! read more

Environment is interesting--the catacombs are pretty unique place to have an eatery. That being said, I ate at the upper floor restaurant and found the food underwhelming. Burger was overcooked. Respectable number of beers on tap but not necessarily impressive. Unfortunately the harvest sangria tasted like watered down apple juice-probbaly one of the worst cocktails I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken parm for dinner tonight. When I cut into the chicken the chicken was completely raw. Although, it was burnt on the outside. The waitress was very nice and took it back when she saw. When a different girl brought a new meal back it was basically a chicken nugget with cheese on top. It looked like goo with breading. When I looked confused she rudely told me that this is the chicken parm I sent back. Insinuating it was my fault the chicken was raw. I did not eat it but asked for the bill. Located in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, this 19th century brewery and museum contains 4 extraordinary restaurants, live events, an unusual store, and an art gallery displaying works from local artists. Bube's has a very rustic, vintage atmosphere, as everything has been preserved as it existed years ago. My experience with Bube's was in the Catacombs, an incredible restaurant located 43 feet underground in the old stone cellars where enormous wooden casks used to be full of aging beer. The atmosphere is beyond unique, as the quiet stone caverns are lighted only by candlelight atop a number of dinner tables. What an experience! Not to mention that the food was great and the service superb. They even provided a free dessert to help us celebrate a birthday in our dining party. I tried a few of the house brewed beers- an IPA that really threw me off because of it's unique maltiness and a red ale that was just perfect. My date tried a caramel apple martini that was equally delicious, and the prices for everything on the menu were very reasonable. Both the swordfish and the seafood mornay were wonderful. All in all, dining in the Catacombs was an experience I will not soon forget, and I am already planning a return visit to try the other dining establishments at Bube's Brewery. Those include the original bar called Alois, the Bottling Works, and the outdoor Biergarten. Themed dinners also include Murder Mysteries, Roman Feasts, Medieval Feasts, Pirate Feasts, Halloween and Christmas Feasts. We went for a regular dinner in the Catacombs. They have other special events (murder mysteries and themed "feasts") that I haven't tried yet. Great place if you're really into historic places and unique dining atmosphere. Service is pretty standard and the food is okay; there's no 'wow' factor. Our dinner started off with a quick tour of the old brewery area before we descend a few flights of stairs to the underground dining area in the catacombs. The atmosphere and history are really interesting (historic activities related to the building included alcohol prohibition and Underground Railroad). The walls are all stone, strung up with lights, and beer barrels line the walls. I thought we would be descending much further down, but it was only about 1-2 flights of stairs. I wish the tour was a little bit longer or more detailed given all the history of the building. (I was expecting more of a brewery tour I guess.) The food portion of our dinner began with their complimentary free pretzels. They are the cold and hard type variety, not warm and soft. (Let's just say I'm glad I didn't have to pay for them.) For entrees, we had a seafood pasta and a roasted duck. I would describe the seafood pasta as typical/standard and not very impressive. The roasted duck is better than the pasta by not much, and you get a good portion. read more

I have been here several times over the course of many years. If you are looking for a casual hangout with friends or a low-key place to hear local music, this is the place for you. The interior is dark and authentic. The food has always placed second fiddle to the bar. My soup came out at the same time as my steak and was rather bland. The Pub Steak was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Be careful with salads. They always put on too much and they often over-power the salad. I always ask for it on the side. The deserts are tiny, so don't plan on sharing. Also, don't sit at any table near the stage. You will get an unpleasant whiff of the bathrooms as patrons open those doors. read more
