DO NOT TRUST this business. My family has been in the car business for over 75 years. I used to use Brownie's for everything for my car back when I had a car that often needed work (2008-ish) as my family always trusted Brownie himself. I recently moved back to Austin from out of state and needed brake pads and my back rotors to be machined. I went back to Brownie's because my family and I always trusted Brownie. However Brownie himself sold his business to a former employee and is no longer a part of the business although his name is still used. The new owner initially quoted me $285 for four new brake pads. So I took off work, drove my car to the shop, paid to Uber myself back to my apartment while I waited on the car. However when Jose at Brownies Automotive called me he told me my back rotors needed to be "sanded" and so the total would be over $600 to replace four Brake pads and "sand" my rotors. Talk about a bait and switch. Anyone who knows anything about cars would know this is criminally overcharging. As a single female he probably thought I was an easy target to scam. Took my car elsewhere and paid $255 for all four brake pads and to get the back two rotors machined (not just "sanded"). Absolutely unacceptable. Brownie would not be happy to know his name is being used this way. I hope this review helps save someone from this predatory business. The positive reviews here must be from friends and family of Jose trying to boost business because if he would try to scam me like this, he's definitely scammed others - they probably just didn't know enough about cars to know they were being scammed. read more

Had a misfire in my engine that needed attention immediately. Went to a mechanic that I had gone to before, and showed up as the first customer in line on a Monday morning. I was turned away because they were so incredibly busy with cars rolled over from the last week. I was in a pinch, because I need my car for work. Google provided me with Brownie's automotive. I drove over, and was immediately taken care of. They broke down how long things should take, costs, were communicative with what I needed, and what I may need soon. And because of cancellations they had due to the rain, I was able to get my car fixed and ready the next morning. Great service, and happy I found this gem of a place. The one I took today had a shimmy problem at low speeds. Turns out that happens in my type of truck. Especially that year ('05 Dodge Ram). Jose diagnosed it and turns out my lower ball joints needed replacement. He explained to me the function of a ball joint and why it's important to fix. Had him replace all four of them and even did a brake job. They kept me informed on what was going on with my truck. Had it all day and they did a fantastic job!!! Jose explained what he'd do from the very beginning with detailed mechanical explanations, very accurate estimates, and possible hidden issues to be cognizant of. Brownie is that rare breed--an honest mechanic. I took my 3-yr old car there when the computer failed and got ready for a heart attack of a bill (the part alone is $1200 and it wasn't covered under the warranty). Brownie took it out, shook it a bit, stuck it back in, and it worked like a charm. He let me know that it could work great for an hour or a decade--he had no way to know. But how awesome is that, to pass up a chance to make the big bucks. I mean, geezus, you can't go to the Jiffy Lube without feeling like you have to physically stand over them to make sure you are in fact getting fresh oil...so it's so anxiety-reducing to deal with someone you can trust is not taking advantage of you. (Incidentally, the f'ing computer went caput about 8 mos. later and did eventually have to be replaced. You KNOW I took it back to Brownie.) The only downside to Brownie's (and the only reason I don't award 5 stars) is it's not a big shop where they crank out your car instantaneously. They don't have the convenience of a drop-off key lock box like those brand-name auto repair places either. But if Brownie tells you something needs fixing, you can believe him, and if he repairs something, he backs it up. read more

Howdy Honda recommended him, and they use him to certify all of their non-Honda used cars. Now all of my friends use him too. Brownie's honest. He'll fix exactly what your car needs and no more. He won't try to upsell you on anything; in fact, it's just the opposite. He will tell you how to save money. Need Honda maintenance work done? Take it to Brownie and save $$$. Often the Honda dealership will do work just because it's on the the list, but Brownie will check your car to see if it really needs to be done. If not, it doesn't get done. That's just more $$$ in my pocket. He'll tell you if your car is on it's last leg and when it's time to get rid of it without letting it become a money pit. If you need a good used car, he can tell you what's crossed his path that's really good. Brownie can do anything and do it well. And he's funny . . . but I'm not sure he knows it . ;-) read more

I have been taking my car to Brownie's since I was a teenager. My family has used him for every car they have driven since we moved to Austin 25 years ago. He is reliable, honest, and will treat your car right. I highly recommend him! He now has a night drop if you need to drop your car off after hours so he can fix it the next morning. You can also call ahead and schedule a time to take your car in if you know you will be needing specific repairs, like brakes, oil change, etc. He will also tell you about things that could be a problem and when to bring your car back in for him to follow up and make any necessary repairs. I'm not sure if the people who rave about this guy know anything about cars ... 1. I'm irked he put oil in my car without asking my permission, wrong oil buddy. 2. Told me _____ needs to be replaced. So no its fine I had a new one not too many miles ago the part just needed a new cap it's not broken or leaking etc. $20 fix not a $500 fix. Silly rabbit trix are for kids. 3. Said the part that's actually broken wasn't but should be fixed anyways. 4. This one REALLY GETS ME. He said labor for this part is $××× PLUS $××× for the second part. I understand charging if you need to remove this part today and that tomorrow or maybe umm this part is located here and that's way over. HAHA but to remove the supposedly broken part you need to remove the actual broken part so hey guess what? There should not be a separate charge for labor when you need to remove one part to get to the other. No logic there. 5. Im peeved my check engine light when on when I got my car back, that's just strange to say the least. It wasn't before. That's what made me think hrm did he do something? I ended up at a mechanic that's a good friend of one of my friends... should have just waited. Now I'm worried if this guy broke a thing or two while checking. You sir are a crook. Brownie is the guy to take your vehicle when it doesn't work. I've had 3 different vehicles fixed by him. Each time he does his work fast and he does it right. He's never tried talking me into work that was too expensive; actually he has always talked me out of the expensive stuff if it could be avoided. For instance, when an inspection station said I had to change my cat converter, Brownie replaced my O2 sensors at a fraction of the cost and said that cat converters are always blamed for problems with emissions codes but they only get blamed cause they are more expensive than O2 sensors. I appreciated him saving me 1000+ dollars. Hes also fixed super easy stuff and has either charged me just labor or in one case didnt charge me at all. He's told me when stuff will need to be fixed down the road so that I won't be surprised. I've only had to take a vehicle back to him once and that was because a wire came loose for my horn while they were fixing something else in my dash. He fixed it in less than an afternoon and didn't charge me. A small inconvenience but he handled it perfectly. Most of my friends get their cars worked on by Brownie, too. There aren't many guys who care about the job more than the money. Save yourself some unnecessary stress and give Brownie a call. read more

I selected Brownie's based on several very positive reviews by my South Austin Neighbors. I was not disappointed. The biggest consensus is that he is very honest. I had a broken RPM & Speedometer gauge and a number of items on my 50,000 mile recommendation check in my owners manual that I wanted him to do or tell me if they needed to be done. For the gauges, he diagnosed and recommended that the dealer could probably better take care of that. For the owners manual recommendations, he checked out all the items that they recommended and told me that all my fluids were still very clean looking and did not require changing. Actually the manual had given me a range of 50,000 to 83,000 miles, so I am good to go for awhile on those. Then in addition, I had been told that I needed new brakes. He checked them and told me that my pads were fine, and he was not sure why they said that I needed new brakes. So, bottom line, he did a lot of diagnosing, but did not charge me anything. I definitely will be returning to him whenever I have a service concern. By the way, he now has a key drop on his garage door for those that need to leave the car when he is not there. That had been a concern expressed by the previous reviewer. read more

I am pretty much in agreement with the other posters. I took my car hear a couple of years ago when I suspected that the dealership had mis-diagnosed and air conditioning problem. Brownie's was able to discover the actual problem (amazing that Maxwell Ford thought that replacing the perfectly good compressor cluch would fix a coolant leak in the evaporator coil). The owner was very up front about repair costs and helped me make an informed decison whether to fix the problem or get a new vehicle. I would definitely recommend the repair shop for any older car that is out of warranty. read more
