I've been going to Flamingo for a couple years, but my experience with them over the past 24 hrs. took it to the next level. Joe, who is familiar with both my old Honda's ('09 and '14) continues to provide meaningful and practical advice. He anticipates concerns about budget, tells you want to prioritize over the months/years to come, and never pressures you into a decision. Yesterday, we had our old car in for a routine check-up. While I was picking it up at the end of the day, our other car's battery died. I shared this with Joe as an aside, saying I was glad that at least we had the serviced car to drive home, Joe said he'd be sticking around longer in the shop and would be willing to check out the battery for our other car. He lent me his portable battery jumper and said I could stop by either that night or tomorrow morning. He then drove me up to my serviced car so I could get to it faster. An hour later, I came back with the other car, having started it with Joe's portable jumper. I hung out at Flamingo after hours while they diagnosed and replaced the battery. The amount of care and frank advice that I've gotten from Joe is beyond any level I've ever gotten from a car shop before. It far exceeds what you'd ever get from a dealership shop. This last experience with them has solidified my impression of them, and has taken me from occasional word of mouth recommendation level to enthusiastic web review. read more

My experience at Flamingo Automotive was a complete disappointment. After diagnosing my car, the mechanic Joe told me he could do the work for $2,500. I thought he was joking because the price seemed ridiculously high for the work that needed to be done. But no, he was serious. When I decided not to proceed with the repair, he still charged me a hefty diagnostic fee. It felt like a bait-and-switch, and I ended up leaving with my car in the same condition and out some cash for nothing. I took my car last month to them to show them some extensive damage done to my bumper after a crash, and even though it was not the kind of work they did and it was a very busy day for the shop, Joe said he would try to help me by tying up my bumper so I could drive it safely to Houston which is where I was headed. I'm in college and haven't had any car problems in Austin, so I'm clearly clueless and just needed to repair my side mirror that was unfortunately knocked off. Joe welcomed me and was extremely helpful, patient, and caring. He remembered me when I came in and got to know my dad over the phone. Everyone else I talked to was the same. He saved me money by re-using some of the remaining parts, which I feel like many car places would skip on and take any opportunity to charge you more. Amazing amazing business!!! I noticed a plastic piece hanging off of the bottom of my car under the engine around 3pm on a Friday. It was definitely not sounding great when I drove, so went here because it was the closest to where I was. They were able to squeeze me in and get my car looked at within 10 minutes (even with no appointment or heads up), fix what was needing to be reattached, and even checked my tires and fluid levels before letting me go with no charge. Had a nail in the tire and since this place was close to my office I brought it in. $25 for the patch seems fair and fine. Since I needed an oil change regardless, ask them what it would cost. The front office receptionist said it'd be be $105. I ask "Does that include taxes and fees?" She rings it up on the computer, and all said and done it was $140. The oil place directly across the street does it for $84 with the same full synthetic oil and including taxes, so I went there instead. Also needed an inspection, so figured I'd knock that out as well. I had just put a camper top on my truck so the 3rd brake light was blocked a little, they charged me $90 to connect two wires so it could pass inspection. Definitely a bit steep and wish I would have asked how much it'd be before I got off the phone with him. Had the tools in the truck to do it myself in 5 minutes. Oops -- but that's on me for not asking. They are super friendly and do seem honest. Would def go here if cost weren't an issue. read more

I love this place - the best mechanics ever. I've been going to Flamingo for years, and they have always gone the extra mile to make sure that everything is running smoothly before letting me know that my car is ready for pick up. They are honest, and skilled, and just genuinely nice people. I could go on and on about the various issues (big and small) they have fixed on my car and my kids' cars over the years, but will just say that yesterday when I had a problem with my car, they were able to work me into their schedule on the same day and fixed the problem for free and sent me on my way with a handshake. My car is a frequent visitor of Flamingo Automotive. I think my car secretly hates me. Anywho, a colleague recommended this place a while back when I was desperate for anywhere but Honda to take my CR-V for repairs. I had been burned one too many times by Honda and had enough. She told me that Joe is a very honest mechanic and will tell you when things actually need to be fixed and when they can wait. And over the years he has done exactly that. I've always been happy with how I've been treated. I do think that $50 is a little high for an oil change but they've taken such good care of me and know my car and it's quirks so I don't want to take it anywhere else. This is an update of a previous review - they now have taken great care of 5 cars, include my latest, a Volvo. All the previous cars exceeded their expected lifespan, except the gen 2 Integra (RIP 6/28/2004, accidentus interruptus). They tend to be very busy, but also very thorough.
