I've been taking my car here for everything -- oil changes, collision repair, etc (two insurance-paid accidents) over the past 10 years. I just picked up my car after a recent significant accident and it looks better than before with the new Lexus parts. I went to countless other shops looking for someone to help me patch some badly degraded rust holes in my 2006 Ford E350 adventure van. Everyone just wanted to replace the entire side of the van for a cost of over $10,000. Rudy at Newspeed Automotive told me it would be no problem for them to cut out the rusted areas and weld in metal to replace it, then finish and paint it to look new. That's exactly what happened. Not only does the van look as good as new, but it was all at a fraction of the cost quoted by other shops. Rudy is very easy to work with and his crew is really good at what they do. I was so happy I came back for another small project to fix body issues inside the doors. Once again, service was quick, and it looks really good. I don't even know where to start. Rudy and his shop were a COMPLETE failure in the repainting of my vehicle. I paid top dollar on the promise that the car would be painted using the best materials and techniques. It took Newspeed three months to complete a job that was promised in 2 weeks I was very patient given unseasonable wet weather - and yet the job was still never completed. I picked up the vehicle (the first time) to get other things done to it and was promised that I could bring it back when business slowed down and it would take an additional 3-4 days to complete. Upon return, again weeks went by with no work completed. I finally told Rudy I would pick up the vehicle and find a reputable shop to complete the job. Instead, Rudy decided to try and cram a wet sand, compound, and polish job in 12 hours. This was AFTER I told him I was done with him and his shop. What a joke! After picking up the vehicle, I took it to both a reputable paint shop AND a paint correction shop where they pointed out 1) overspray in many areas, 2) fisheye in the paint where spots were not correctly cleaned before painting, 3) scratches and numerous other blemishes and 4) areas that were measured with a paint gauge showing edges that were barely covered with paint. The paint was peeling off of the finders because it was not prepared correctly. Additionally, there were sizable areas that he had wet sanded and just left. Honestly, I considered getting an attorney to sort out the mess but I doubt it would be worth the additional time and frustration to bother with such a dishonest man. Rudy will tell you what you want to hear, he will over-promise and under-deliver and his shop will do shoddy work. Stay very far away! read more

I asked Rudy to work on my son's car to clear the O2 sensors codes for inspection. Also, to drive the car 100 miles to make sure the check engine light doesn't come back on. Without consulting me (apparently Rudy lost my contact information), they did a tune up ($400-$600????). I specifically asked him not to perform a tuneup without consulting me. On top of that, the car was driven around 225+ miles since I dropped of the car. One-don't loose any customer's contact information. Two-don't perform any major repairs unless consulting the customer first. If the car needed a tune-up and you lost his contact information, then let the customer call you back, before performing expensive repairs. Plus, the car was full of his personal belongings, and dirty napkins. Rudy sees the situation in a different point of view. read more

Rudy at Newspeed charged more than double for a simple repair ($500 charged for what should have been $200, high side). It was to replace a "harmonic balancer" and drive belt in a 2010 Honda Odyssey. Then when questioned about it, he refused to refund any of the EXTREMELY Exorbitant overcharge, or to explain why he charged 150% more than even the dealership. This is the best mechanic/auto shop I have ever visited in my entire life. Rudy, the owner, saved me a ton of headache, and was extremely honest with me from the get go. I came to him on a Saturday morning with a badly misfiring engine and progressively worsening check engine lights, and we went on a test drive together, during which he identified a ton of problems with the engine and basically declared that I was in need of a totally brand new engine swap. Now, since I had only intended to keep the car for about 2 more months, this was heartbreaking news. I explained my situation to him, and he agreed that it wasn't worth it to do an engine swap. So he told me to give him a couple hours to see what he could do, and to see if he could potentially do an engine treatment and/or tuneup that might temporarily alleviate the engine problems. Right on cue, a few hours later, Rudy called me and proposed doing an engine tuneup since he thought it would help. Again, he was honest with me and said that it may not completely fix the root problem, but that it might lengthen the engine's lifespan by a few months. I really like how he gave me alternatives and made very sure to clarify the risks and potential rewards of each choice. I ended up going along with the tuneup, and Rudy and his team worked all night to get it done for me. They ended up replacing many engine components like spark plugs, ignition coils, filters and such, and did a fuel injector treatment and added new thicker oil to maximize the engine's life, all for $380. He even fixed some exposed wiring/insulation for me for free. The catch was that I was visiting from Houston, so I had to pick up the car on Sunday morning, when most mechanics aren't even open. Rudy drove out to meet me at his shop so I could get my car back on the weekend. Really surprising to find a mechanic that cares and was so accommodating. Most importantly, Rudy was truly a professional and had a great personality of honesty and openness that made me feel 100% confident in his work. He went above and beyond to make sure I understood all the details of what he was proposing, and even kept the old parts just to show me how bad of a condition everything was in. Don't bother going anywhere else -- take your cars to Rudy. He'll do it right, quickly, and affordably. EDIT: oh, I forgot to mention that after I dropped my car off on Saturday morning, Rudy offered to give me a free ride to my friend's house nearby. Super nice guy. read more

Be very careful working with Rudy Palma, the owner. This place screwed me out of money and time with two vehicles (one foreign, one domestic). I am well aware that parts everywhere are hard to come by but this mechanic buys off market parts and charges premium on the parts and labor of services. He misled me with my domestic car; never fixed the problem directly only worked around it for a whole year to swindle money out of me! I purchased a catalytic converter from him; turns out it was used! He never changed the O2 sensors which is apart of the converter as a whole so the car had problem after problem. Of course, each time something wrong happened to the car I would follow up with him only for him to tell me he would need another round of money to find the root of the issue. I have wrote him checks totaling close to $5,000 for a car that had minimal issues before going to his shop. My foreign needed to be fixed through insurance and he failed to send the estimate when he said he did. I confirmed with insurance that he had never even contacted them regarding the matter nor did he respond to any of their communication. He lied, bullshitted, and finessed his way through the whole process. Please do your research; there are plenty of other local shops who are honest and timely. I will never go back here. I was recommended Newspeed Automotive by a friend. He said they were cheap and honest (they were neither). Things were strange, right off. The head mechanic Rudy offered to give me a loaner car, but told me "My boyfriend had to drive it, not me," when I told him I didn't have a boyfriend, he told me I couldn't have the car. I know my car had a bad alternator, I know this because I know the symptoms of a bad alternator and the mobile mechanic who initially came out to look at my car also said it was a bad alternator. Rudy initially quoted me $350 cash, which I payed him, because I was stupid. He said the car would be ready on Tuesday. When I went to pick it up on Tuesday, it wasn't ready, but it was dismantled. He said he hadn't found the part yet in any junk yards from here to San Antonio, but he was checking the junk yards in Houston tomorrow and it would be ready onfriday. We had never discussed used parts. Since my car was in pieces, I had no choice, but to leave it. Fast forward to Friday, the car still isn't ready. Now he says he need to buy a new part (why didn't he just buy a new part in the first place). He tells me a new alternator for my car $750, which again, I stupidly give him, (I do some online research later that night and find out that a brand new alternator for my car is $450, not $750). He says the car will be ready Tuesday (he's now had my car for 13 days), so I leave it, though at this point, I have literally no money left in my bank account. I come back on Tuesday. My car is ready! I go to pick it up, at this point, Newspeed Automotive has $1100 of my money for a $600 repair. The head mechanic tells me I just need to settle the bill before he'll give me my keys. He tells me I owe them an additional $450. I ask him what this is for. He says he also, without my permission replaced my 2 month old battery and every fuse in my fusebox (why?). I don't have that in my in my bank account at this point, I'm a lyft driver, so without my car I'm not making any money. I explain this to him, but he says he'll put a mechanic's lien on my car if I don't pay him now. At this point, I just want my car back. So, a separate call to my parents later and between my parents and grandparents, they've scraped up enough to get my car out of crooked mechanic car jail. Please, learn from my mistakes. I had to lose $1650 dollars to this man to learn this lesson, just don't go here and if any mechanic starts doing this, get your car towed somewhere else. read more

I took my BMW 335i 2007 for a radiator leak! I got a previous quote for $800 from another mechanic and wanted a second opinion! Rudy was polite and friendly. Called the parts store in front of me and charged me exactly the price quoted for the hoses needed to be replaced and charged only $80 for labor. In all changed two hoses- upper radiator hose and hose to the expansion tank with labor the total cost $195. I was happy not to mention saving close to $600 and he worked on the car as I waited and done within the hour. He also test drive with me to make sure the job was done right and no other underlying issues were there. Seriously, y'all - Rudy's business, Newspeed Automotive is exactly what the auto-repair service industry should be like - HONEST, EFFICIENT, RESPONSIVE, PERSONAL and HUMANE. Last week, I found myself stranded with a dead battery a mile from home. I called AAA, they jumped my car and I was able to make it home, but I still needed to address the underlying problem - and I knew it was the alternator, b/c I had just replaced the battery a month prior. It's Monday evening at 10:30 pm and I'm scouring Yelp for auto repair places, filtering for "open now" (yeah right, I thought) and Newspeed came up w/ a phone number and a handful of rave reviews. So, thought, "why not?" - I copied the phone number into a long text message, providing the issues/details, the make and model, my contact info, and then kept my fingers crossed that I'd get a response first thing in the morning. But, to my surprise I immediately received a "read receipt" on my phone! I was shocked. Rudy texted back that he'd be able to take a look at the car first thing in the AM. Not only that, he then researched the parts cost/labor logistics for a firm quote. This is all within 10 min of reaching out to him, via text, late on a Monday night! ...AND, his quote was less than HALF of what I would've been charged at any other repair shop. I know this, because I did my research on alternator part cost and labor cost for my vehicle. So within 20 minutes, I had the security and commitment from Rudy to help fix my car. I slept well that night, relieved. Okay, stay with me people, it gets better....so, in the morning, we talked on the phone (he asked me to reach out at 8 am) and while talking he said he didn't feel good about me driving my car on a drained battery / dead-ish alternator and offered to drive to my location with another employee to pick-up my car (no charge). Guys, I haven't experienced customer service to this degree in a LONG time. I almost cried. This helped me so much - I was able to get the kids off to school on time and didn't have to cancel my work meetings or worry about getting stranded on my way to his shop. Rudy showed up exactly at 9:30 am like he said he would, even brought another charged battery, popped it into my car and took off from my home by 9:45. I was in awe of how effortless he made this. Fast forward to 12:30 - he called to let me know it was ready and it was the alternator, indeed. He replaced it, provided the alternator make/model (which was an alternator specific to the type of Toyota I drive) and stayed true to his original quote (which was extremely low in comparison to what I would've paid). Okay, you'd think that'd be it, right? Nope. Above and beyond folks. This guy knew I had kids coming home from school in the afternoon and kindly offered to bring the car back to my location. I don't know if it was because it was my birthday (honestly, this all happened on my birthday) or if this is just his MO when it comes to how he operates business. But, from all the other Yelp reviews, I can see I'm not the only one who's had the same sentiment. Okay, y'all are already thinking this can't get better, right? Well, it did. After he dropped it off and I noticed it was washed. Yeah, he washed it. Not only that, but in the morning, I get in the car and the interior is cleaned and wiped down. I have kids, so I know how dirty it was before I let him drive it away. :) - plus the clincher? ...he kindly let me know that he noticed a faint noise while driving it (something I've heard for years and have had checked out by three different places, to which was told it wasn't identifiable), but Rudy told me exactly what was! He let me know the specifics, related to the rear-differential, etc. and what would fix it. Mystery noise no one else could identify, but he identified it within 6 hours of having it. Besides doing honest diagnostics & really great repair work on my beloved Acura, Rudy also kept in regular communication, periodically sent pics of the progress, and also helped me decipher & navigate all the ick that encompasses The Insurance Company. Rudy is also a kind hearted person- I was a bit shook up after the accident & he took care of everything. He & his wife even picked me up & took me home! I first went to NewSpeed when I was looking for a car. While they did not have a Saturn Wagon, which was what I needed, they were helpful and seemed more than willing to help in any way they could. Because of this, when I did need work done, I tried them out. Each and every time they identified the problem, fixed it, charged what they said they would, and guaranteed their work. Additionally, if I needed a ride, or other accommodation, they were always there. I have recommended them to friends and family without hesitation. Their manager, Rudy, is honest and helpful. The mechanics are competent and very good about noting any other possible issues as they work on the car. This does not mean they try to get you to pay more than you anticipated. Quite the opposite. The rates are fair, and often there have been a couple of minor things taken care of with little or no charge. I am sending my 1999 Saturn wagon over today to have an engine replacement. (The car I did NOT buy from them) I TRUST them. After having more than one untrustworthy person work on my car, I am very, very happy to have them around. Only one caveat... I am a raging feminist until you take the pen out of my hand and pop the hood of my car. I immediately loose all confidence, because I know nothing about automobile engines, and I never want to have to know. There are people in this world who love cars, and that's their job. I love books, that's my job. My car is an old Subaru. I take repairing it very seriously because it's not exactly in prime condition. If I sink 500 dollars into a repair, it could very well tank on me...and then I've not only lost my transportation....I lost 500 dollars. Rudy is great. He sold me the car a few years ago, and has been the mechanic on it ever since. It's had a few problems, but it was a cheap car for graduate school. Once I had a flat tire and there was no spare. Rudy showed up and filled the tire for me. Next, the starter went out right after I'd had a major repair. Rudy drove out to my house at 9pm, banged on it until it started, drove with me to the shop so he could work on it the next day and then drove me back home. He's a great mechanic and a great guy. You wouldn't know it by looking at the shop, but he knows how to find used parts on the cheap and doesn't charge you a billion dollars for labor. HIGHLY recommended.
