This business has been supported by the Brookline community for decades. Now they have decided to give Brookline residents the middle finger because they don't want to do residential work any longer. Their standard call-out fee is almost $300, and that's before they've done any work, and then they mark up the hardware at an extortionate rate. One of the employees told me that they do this because they don't want to do residential work. Since that is the case, they should just say so up front, instead of pretending to service the Brookline community. I have used this business 3 times in the last 50 years. their integrity has certainly changed. I ordered two deadbolts and was told they'd call when they were in to schedule the installation. I finally called and they had ordered only one. The second one came in and we scheduled an installation. They never showed up. I called and no apologies, just too bad for me!. There is a smug, entitled, and unhelpful vibe you get when talking to them. Like "What do you want?!" vs "How can I help you?" How are you still in business? Why are you such trash to customers? My wife and I have been supporting this local business for years. A few months ago, we asked for a simple keypad lock change. We were quoted a hefty $175 for it (this is a $140 at Home Depot) over the phone. Even though we knew it was expensive, we thought it was still worth doing it because supporting the local economy is important to us. Not only did it take four weeks to complete the work but the bill for the lock came to $330. We paid the bill not wanting to put the employee on the spot and immediately called Brookline Lock for a rectification. Marshall picked up the phone and tried to justify the price by telling us a story about the lock being a special order from Schlage. We took him to his word, called Schlage and checked the model number. Surely enough, there was nothing special about that lock other than being charged double the price. The Schlage representative actually urged us to dispute the transaction. We went back to Brookline Lock with this information, and were given the run around again. We don't mind paying more to support a local business, but we will stand against dishonest business practices and deceptive pricing. The consumer is not dumb. I'll be filing a complaint to the FTC for unfair business practices. Avoid at all costs. read more

Unreliable: do not use. We had an appointment scheduled for 9am yesterday. At 10am no one had showed up or contacted us, so we called them. They claimed to have no record of the appointment but said they'd be here that afternoon around 2pm. 2pm goes by without anyone showing up or contacting us. Around 5pm we called them to ask what's up. We were told they'd call the next day to make a new appointment. Everybody runs late sometimes, but twice in the same day without contacting us to let us know what's going on is bad service. I just moved down the street from this small, neighborhood hardware store and needed to make some extra copies of my keys. In the middle of the day during the week, there were two people working, and no other customers. I handed the friendly man my keys, told him what I wanted and he got right to work. While he was doing that, I looked over their large display of key covers and key stickers (like the ipod/laptop skins...you could have a disney princess key!), which my child-at-heart yearned for (I nearly bought the plastic house key cover for $0.39, but felt like a tool...only now if I want it, I have to go back JUST for that haha). He finished very quickly, rang me up, wished me well, and I was on my way. Each key was a little under $2. I've only been in a handful of hardware stores, leaving me little to compare it to. I broke my key off in my door and was panicking about how much it would cost to fix. I called around to a bunch of Brookline locksmiths and was quoted around $50 for a locksmith to come and fix the lock. I called Brookline Lock Company and they told me that it was easy to just take the lock off the door and bring it in and they would fix it for around $10. I went this route and brought it in. Literally 2 minutes later my lock was fixed and it only cost me $5. They then told me how to properly reinstall the lock in my door and to call them if I had any problems. These guys are friendly and are really just concerned with helping their customers out. I would definitely recommend them to anyone! read more

Called office, and they had no record of appointment and suggested that I was confused. The office called back 6 hours later to apologize for "missing the appointment." Others have mentioned the "older guy"-one reviewer said he was "half grumpy" (agreed-never smiles, is a bit impatient), one reviewer found him very knowledgeable (agreed-when I asked him for advice for a varnish job-although he didn't use any more words than were necessary). Recently, I was one of the apparently rare customers who had key copies made there that didn't work (even after a second attempt) - on both times I went in to get help, the older guy was there. He told me he could not understand of all the keys they copy why I'm the only one who has been having such issues. He was curt, impatient, and both times, made me feel almost like I had somehow done something wrong. Barely had I told him why I was there the second time when he said, "That's it, I'm done. We will give you your money back and I don't want to talk about this key any more." When I tried to ask a question very calmly after that, he cut me off. In my opinion, he got a little "huffy" (although he didn't think so, when I told him there was no need to get on like that.) I had no qualm with the fact that this gentleman stated that the store policy was to return a customer's money after 2 failed key copy attempts, but I do have an issue with the way in which this policy was conveyed to me while I just calmly and respectfully stood at the counter. Just because you have overall very good reviews for key copies, does that mean it's appropriate to treat the one customer who is having issues with key copies like they're somehow not credible or worthy of a little neighborhood friendliness? This store has unfortunately just lost me as a customer (although I do confess that all other staff I've encountered here have been very courteous and friendly - unfortunately they are not always there). read more

Living in Brookline for 15 years I've shopped in the store many times. Their productline is good but very expensive. They workmanship however is questionable at times. Also, They literally threw me out of the store at 5:03 because they wanted to close! To the point of being rude was unnecessary. I broke the key to my motorcycle off in the ignition. Sweet. I brought it inside and got it warm enough and put a dab of Krazy Glue on the end of the key piece and after letting it set a while, I gently pulled the key out in one piece. Hooray! So now I had a key I couldn't use and a bike I couldn't move. Boo. I trucked over to the Brookline Lock and explained to the guy I had a double curve ball for him, I had a key to an English motorcycle that I needed a copy of and it was in 2 pieces. It didn't even phase him. He had to look through most of the keys on the wall but eventually he settled on a VW key. He made the copy and ground off the unused portion off the end of it. I brought it back and though it's not a perfect fit, it did eventually work and now I can ride my bike home to where the key I know works, is. A great service for $3.50. read more

This place is a fairly sizeable "lock" place. It's easily accessible and parking is not that far away. I went in and headed to the counter. A woman I thought was shopping, broke from her "shopping" and asked if I needed help. I told her what I needed and she called back for one of the 3-4 guys in the back came to the front. I told him I needed a lock rekeyed. He was polite and looked at it and then told me that they don't work on Kwikset locks. To the right of us is a display with kwikset locks. Behind him is a giant Kwikset sign. So I point that out to him and he says they sell them but they don't work on them. They just work on Schlage & Arrow locks. I'm just bummed because I think if you sell a brand, you should also be able to service the brand. Other than that, they looked to be a very professional place and were attentive. read more

This place is the most unprofessional, rude, and unfriendly locksmith/company I have ever dealt with! I needed a mailbox fixed at a condo that I own and 1st one of the employees tells me he would need to replace all the mailbox's to do it which would cost me around $800. Then I talked to his boss (the owner) and he tells me he can order me the mailbox door and that they would not need to replace all the mailboxes. During our conversation he was talking to me as if he was doing ME a favor and was plain rude. This place is the worst....I would rather spend more money at another locksmith then give them 1 cent. I don't know if they are under new ownership or what, but I have had better experiences with them in the past. Last night (Thurs) our deadbolt froze and we were unable to use the door. I called at 5PM and the person I spoke with said they only dealt with commercial businesses after hours, but someone would call me in the morning. She took my info and I felt confident that I would be hearing from them. I wound up calling them at 11AM (Friday) to check on it and they had no record of me calling. I was then told that they could not get to me until Monday. I wound up going elsewhere and have no plans to deal with them ever again. Additionally, the locksmith that was here to do the repair, within an hour I might add, also pointed out the shoddy work that had been done when installing that deadbolt about one year ago. read more

For making rental unit key copies, this has been my go-to locksmith for years. Very conveniently located. The previous owner was gruff and unfriendly. He also had an odd personal vendetta against American Express so would not take AMEX cards. The current owners take all the standard cards. They have hired professional staff and have updated the look of the store. I have found my interactions with them to be more business-like than somewhere "where everybody knows your name". That said, this is a place where you can have a copy made of almost any type of key for a reasonable price and usually without a long wait. I cannot speak to their service calls since I have another vendor that does that for me. read more

To be very honest I am shocked to be writing this review! My 9 month pregnant daughter & I came here to get keys made, so when she had her baby I would be able to get into her place. My husband suggested a locksmith rather than a hardware store as he felt they would be experts. Long story short, the people here were neither experts, friendly nor good business people!! We had 3 keys made, went home & they did not work! Ok, that happens, we went back & the gentleman said his fellow worker must have left some "meat on them" & he fixed them or so we thought! After trying them & no go again we went back & gave them another try. We thought for sure they would work now, but NO! So today we went back( that's 3 times) & just asked for our money back! It was only $7 & some change, but it was the principle of the matter! So, the manager would not give us our money back without the receipt! He did not stand by his work & only said the cash register would not let him!! That is not only poor craftsmanship, but poor service as well. It seems absurd to not stand by your work, especially in these days of social media! So bottom line, if you need keys that work, do NOT go here!! read more

Unless your into nasty, and I mean truly nasty service, dont ever go into the Brookline Lock Company at 33 Harvard Street -for anything! SAVE YOUR TIME AND $$ - GO ELSEWHERE. This is not the first time -- Always trying to make money from customers!! All I needed was a spring for an existing lock. They tried everything to try to get me to buy a new lock which would also require me to purchase extra keys. They lied about not having any springs but after I mentioned I called and the person on the call knew I was dropping by, they said 'oh, we might have some.' Then they said it has to be a specific key with just the right fit and tension which was BS. The person puts a spring in for me which I didn't need him to do but he insisted they needed to make sure the lock worked - I didn't need him to do that. It was a 'very basic' fix then they had he nerve and charged me $7.50 for a small spring. Brighton has a great locksmith who is sincere in helping and very honest!! read more

The bolt on our front door was sticking too - for months I couldn't fix it with oil or wd40, but he took care of it instantly with a minor adjustment. These guys are spectacular. I will use them for ALL my business in both Brookline and Arlington. I own a rental in Brookline with a very old mailbox. Since I only have a single key, I was trying to get more made. Other companies told me it was going to cost $200+ to get a brand new lock because they couldn't make a copy of the key.
