I was recommended this spot from a friend in Vegas. This spot was about 11 blocks from our hotel, so we decided to rent the hotel bikes. The bike ride was a fun adventure then when we found Broken Shaker we noticed there was a bike rack. Although the hotel never gave us any locks..... My friends said the bikes would be okay, but I figured to ask if they would be stolen if left unattended. The host and the security said, "This is South Beach, those will be gone" lol So we thought about all our options, whether we should ride back and uber.. Then the security said they would check if there was anywhere to store the bikes. Luckily the manager let him know about a part of the restaurant that was closed for the evening where we could store our bikes!! We were ecstatic and their service was very accommodating! With our situation they made it work and placed us right where we can watch our rented bikes. We got seated then moments later it began to rain. When I think about cocktail bars in Miami - I always have the utmost respect for the Broken Shaker. It is an OG in the game, and a pioneer for what cocktail making and vibes should be (in my opinion). It is located in the Freehand Miami and is tiny tiny bar cranking out some amazing cocktails you can enjoy poolside and patio-side. I've been several times, but last week I went in Phase 2 of Miami reopening. Meaning what? There were masks, there was hand santizer, there were disposable menus and also QR code scanner menus, too. The indoor bar is closed, but there is plenty of spaced out seating in the patio area. Jimmy, the chef, happened to be our groups server and he was awesome. While I know the cocktails here are awesome - I was in a wine mood. The good news is, these folks have an amazing assortment of natural wines and I got to try a bubbly, an orange, and an effervescent red. Wow. I also ate. A lot. Back when I was living in Miami, we used to come to the Freehand for the Broken Shaker. I was happy to see that they were still around and making great drinks. The atmosphere of this bar is really tropical and fun. It gives jungle disco vibes. The giant disco ball over the pool is what really makes it memorable. It's mostly outdoor seating. Their outdoor space is very green and lush. I'm blanking on the names of the cocktails we got, but we loved them. We also adored the guacamole and incredible plantain chips that came with them. The service was good. It's a wonderful spot for people watching or making new friends. Since it's located inside a hostel, most people are very friendly. When Google says your business is open till 1AM and Yelp says it's open 12AM I wouldn't think you'd close at 11:15pm. We drove here specifically for their cocktails and were told they're closed. This is probably the cutest lil pool / hotel / restaurant in the Miami Beach area! The crowd is very cool and relaxed. They have live music and tasty cocktails ranging from $12-15ish. I also believe they have a happy hour but I unfortunately missed that. I wasn't expecting for their food to be good... but it was AMAZING. When they told me they have a limited menu because of covid, I was worried since I'm a vegetarian. They told me not to worry over the phone and I trusted them. When we arrived, the first thing I did was take a peep at the menu. And they had so many options, even on the smaller limited menu. I was very stoked. I like the broken shaker. I've been here dozens of times. I've rented king size rooms and I've also stayed in their hostel style rooms as well. If you're on a budget, the hostel is clean and safe. If you want to spend some extra dough, then get yourself a private room. The negatives about this place is that the staff is kind of rude and the pool is dirty sometimes And also it gets super crowded on Friday and Saturday because people come from other places just to hang out. We were there for over two hours and saw our server twice, and it took an additional 15 minutes to get the check after I saw the hostess and a bar manager. There is plenty of staff. This place was a challenge to get to due to the construction in the area. The location of the Broken Shaker is also a bit lowkey, it's in a hotel. We didn't make reservations, we walked in and were seated immediately. It was pretty loud in there because of the music, but the vibe was great. The service was pretty meh. I don't remember the name of my cocktail, but I wasn't a huge fan. The loml got an aperol spritz and he liked it. We ordered the mushroom tacos and shawarma fries. The tacos were soooo good. I craved them for the rest of our trip. I'm not sure if we were just hungry or they were just that good. The shawarma fries were okay. I was visiting Miami Beach from Vancouver, Canada December 20-23 so I decided to stay at Freehand. On my first night I checked out menus for places in the area online and thought that Broken Shaker would be best because it's attached to Freehand and the prices weren't terrible. When I was seated, they told me to use the QR code on the table but the umbrella cut off half of it so I decided to go off the menu on the website. I ordered a guacamole, a cocktail and a glass of wine. When I got the bill, I was surprised. Every item was a few dollars more than what was listed on the website. For those three items, my bill was $59 USD. I was so shocked that at first, I thought it was my fault so I paid it and went to my room. I decided to email Freehand and Broken Shaker once I got back to my room. I didn't receive a response the next day so I reached out on Twitter and Instagram and also didn't receive any responses. I only got an email back almost a week later when I had left Miami Beach. In this email, the restaurant manager said the website showed a sample menu of what the prices could be and that it was my job to reach out to a manager on the night of to receive a physical menu if my QR code wasn't working. This wasn't possible because there were no managers on the floor and my server was absent most of the time. I had to find him to get my drinks ordered. Also, after the email I noticed the restaurant manager changed all the prices to reflect the "QR code" after my complaint. When I emailed back and told him what he did was illegal in the state of Florida because that qualifies as false and deceptive advertising, he told me he'd welcome me back to the restaurant at any time. After I responded letting him know I am Canadian and don't live in this country and sought an alternate solution, he never responded. Maybe we do things different in Canada but usually the menu on a website is the same as the menu on a QR or physical menu. Additionally, I don't mind paying the automatic 18-20% gratuity if the service is good. But the service is terrible and very slow, you will have to end up going to the bar or walking around to find your server. The only good thing about this place is the pretty string lights and instagramable moments. read more

Had a great time getting evening cocktails at Broken Shaker! It's a little out of the way, but well worth the trip! And the secluded setting adds to the experience -- come here for a more relaxed vibe when you're ready for a break from the South Beach craziness. The outdoor setup is really well done, with lots of greenery and comfortable seating throughout. There's a hotel pool nearby, but there's good separation between hotel guest foot traffic and Broken Shaker patrons. The cocktails themselves were fantastic. I recommend the Peach Boulevard, it was such a refreshing drink for the end of the day. Drinks are about the same price as what you'd find in any other restaurant in the area, but quality can't be beat. The atmosphere, and drinks were perfect as you felt like you were hanging out in an old Miami hotel. The service was ok, this is probably due to us having such a large party, and it being the busiest time of the evening for them (6-7pm). I'm pretty forgiving of the service since we were content to take our time and drink on. Had I been with a more intimate group, I probably would have knocked off a star. I came back to the Broken Shaker on a Saturday evening. I made reservations early in the day and arrived a bit after sunset. They expanded their outside seating and we were sat by the pool. We ordered two rounds of the punch of the day which was a vodka raspberry lemon cocktail. The first round was quite delicious. The second was watery so we had them remade and it was better. We also ordered the falafel burger with a side of fries. The music and decor is always great. The service was okay. The server took quite a long time and would rarely check on us. Tl;dr version: this is easily my favorite cocktail bar in Miami Beach, and one of my favorite cocktail bars anywhere in the world. Detailed version: The outdoor seating, decor, and vibe are a perfectly quirky way to enjoy a Miami Beach evening. The servers and bartenders are friendly, helpful, and surprisingly fast for a place like this. I've been to Broken Shaker 3 times and have had at least a taste of probably 6-7 different cocktails, and they've all been great. You truly can't go wrong with anything on their menu. The "star of the show" the last time I went was the El Menor -- incredibly refreshing and tasty, and the froth/foam (egg white & grapefruit!?) is both fun and delicious. My wife liked it so much that she first ordered it one night and then made us go back the next night so she could have another one. It's on my "must" list next time I'm in town! read more

The shaker must be indeed broken. In summary, nice atmosphere but poor cocktails. BS is (supposed to be) a cocktail bar but I was amazed by the very few cocktails in the menu. I understand that cocktails in the menu are only the featured ones but as first impression it offers a very narrow variety. At first I didn't find appealing any of the cocktails in the menu but the waiter said "we can make any of the classic cocktails for you" so I ordered a Mai Tai (classic and fairly simple tiki drink), 20 min later he came back to tell me they couldn't make it because they didn't have one of the syrups. Really? A beach cocktail bar which also has a tiki bar inside can't make a Mai Tai? Ok! Then I decided to order one of the 'featured cocktails' almost blindly because the description in the menu didn't offer enough details about the spirit/brand/age being used (which I find really terrible), specially when paying $16 + tax + service for a drink. My date ordered 'something refreshing with lot of ice'. Well, what we got was a real disappointment. No ice on my date drink and very very poor quality Old Fashioned with an already melted ice, no garnish and some very young rum that tasted like gasoline. On top of all these, water never arrived to our table, and service was really messy too. The only positive note to add is the pool, lights, and tropical outdoor sitting is nice but the drinks which should be the core business or the highlight were really bad. I didn't care for them but also didn't expect them to have spices (we found out later they were shawarma fries). The space is awesome... very aesthetic. I was staying at Freehand Miami and heard great things about Broken Shaker. It's just inside the hotel/hostel. I tried to make a reservation on a Sunday but it was booked, so then I tried again on Wednesday and was able to make a same day reservation for one. The vibes and music were pretty cool and laid back. The tables are all around the pool and courtyard area. Didn't have any issues with bugs, as some courtyards can sometimes have. The menu is a QR code currently. Water is not free, but a glass bottle. I decided to also try a mock tail since I wasn't wanting to drink this evening, but still wanted to enjoy a fancy drink. I was pleasantly surprised with the Miss Collins mock tail. It was a bit sour but good. I also ordered the burger and fries. The burger is pretty hefty with bacon and two patties, so I could not even finish it. The bacon had a really good Smokey flavor. The fries were tasty and came with ketchup. The food presentation is pretty casual in a paper bowl. I was mostly enjoying the vibe and food just fine as a solo diner. Freehand is a hostel so many solo travelers stay here, and I'm sure it's common for people to eat here alone. I felt fine about it, that is until I was waiting a bit for my check and needed to use the restroom. I had finished eating so I quickly asked a server where the restroom was. There were two, one on the other side of the pool, and another just inside the hotel/hostel. I went inside, there was a short line, and was gone no more than 5-7 mins. At this time I go back to my table to see two other people sitting there! Talk about flipping a table quickly. At this time I find my waiter who didn't seem too apologetic, and I was just like I'm done it's fine. I stood there awkwardly and paid my bill, and was given no discounts or real apology. I understand I left the table, but clearly I had not paid and they should have waited a bit longer to clear the table. I think this place is so busy they just cleared the table without thinking. The outdoor area was colorful and fun with seats surrounding a pool, patio lights and music coming from the bar area (but not too loud so you could easily hear conversation). Reminded me of what I imagined Miami in the 80's would look and feel like. The drinks were phenomenal, with a wide variety of options and none were too sweet, although a little pricey in my opinion for the size of the drinks.
