A year ago I would have given 5 stars. Brodo's mushroom seaweed broth has been my go to for a long time. But, the last two times I bought this broth from them it had no flavor. When it's desperately cold, and you are from a beautiful warm climate, what do you do in NYC? If you are me, you stand outside in the wind tunnel of a sidewalk and wait at a dark, closed window for a cup of delicious, hot soup. There were half a dozen people in line and I figured, if they can do it, I can do it. Then, a nice elderly grandmother type all bundled up in multiple layers stopped. She stared. She says to me, "Why are you standing outside on the sidewalk?" I replied, we are getting hot soup! She had a somewhat puzzled expression on her face as I watched the gears turning. I knew she was thinking "Silly youngster, you can make your own soup you know." But, she nicely said she'd have to come by and try it. Then, two female Japanese tourists stopped to stare. The whispered to each other. One said nervously, as the other giggled, "What you do?" I replied happily, we are getting soup! They both said, "Ohhhhhh..." and giggled some more. Then, the second lady pulled out her phone to snap a photo of the crazy Americans standing outside in the freezing cold to get soup. It was my perfect opportunity... Photobomb! Yummmmm....Bone Marrow Soup to battle out the chills of New York! I like the concept of this place: simple menu and hearty soup. We ordered the Gingered Grass Fed Beef and the Hearth. Personally, I was a bigger fan of the Hearth, which is primarily made with whole stewing hens, turkey legs, beef shin, chicken feet, water, onions, carrot, celery, whole tomato, parsley, sea salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. There's are several "add in" ingredients to choose from as well, for just a little bit extra. I got the shitake mushroom. I can't really describe the complex flavors that permeated my senses, rich? savory? shitake? You have to try it for yourself. OVERALL: Ramen and pho have their place, but brodo is a new take. Let me start by saying that I am not new to the broth game. I make a batch every week in my kitchen. I stopped by Brodo because I was in NY for the weekend, missing my daily broth fix and wanted to see how another place's broth would compare to my own. The day I went was perfect for it---chilly and rainy. The broth hit the spot! I got the Hearth and the Gingered Beef and BOTH were absolutely delicious (Hearth was tastier by a hair)!! They tasted like liquid Thanksgiving dinner!! I questioned how much salt was used, they weren't salty, I just don't add any salt to mine. But after tasting theirs, I just might start LOL! Nice little gem in East Village. Like the soups very much. The toppings are so innovative and definitely worth trying. I've been craving bone broth for about a week now so I had high expectations from a place that has two locations and charges $11 for a large cup of bone broth. I cook regularly and make bone broth but I've been battling a nasty cold and my energy is at -10. Not impressed it was very salty and tasted more like medicine as I forced myself to finish it (hoping for some cold cure). I will not be taking another hike to go get it again. I think it could use some fresh herbs as garnish and to help the taste. And create some freshness and aroma to the taste. On top of that by the time I crossed the street the cup was already leaking from the lid and I ended up wearing at least 10% of it down my shirt, sweater and shoes plus the 10 napkins I walked in to get at the next establishment drank a ton more too. Interesting concept. I came upon the name of the store while passing by in east village. Their selling point was to raise your health! Thus, as I was visiting a friend, who wasn't feeling his best, I picked up some broth at the Hudson Street location. Of course I had to try some myself so I ordered a beef broth and chicken brother, with no add-ins. The chicken flavor was good but probably would benefit with a little salt. I enjoyed the beef broth a bit more as it had a slightly more powerful flavor and a small ginger kick. It's quite expensive, given it's about $9-10 a cup. Perhaps you're really paying for the location of this place. If it was closer to where I work and live, perhaps I'd fancy another one. read more

LOVE their broth. It is pricey for broth but it's delicious. They serve the single size in a coffee cup. Great way to warm up on a cold and windy day. The broth is piping hot and delicious! I got the chicken broth with the shiitake mushroom tea. The broth was brown, hearty, and flavorful. I love the touch of the shiitake, mainly because I love mushrooms. $7/8 for broth but honestly it's worth the splurge for a once in a while thing. I have nothing but admiration for Marco Canora, and both my prior visits to Hearth were some of the most positive experiences I've had in NYC; so it should come as no surprise that I was quick to mentally bookmark Brodo upon hearing that Chef Canora was launching a broth take-out counter in an unused window at Hearth. Planning around an evening in the East Village one Friday gave me the perfect opportunity to suggest a quick stop at Brodo beforehand, and despite the fact that spotting the tiny window was a little confusing, the bright orange awning overhead was certainly helpful. The menu is small as there's essentially only three broths to choose from: an organic chicken, a gingered grass-fed beef, and the Hearth broth, which utilizes a mixture of chicken, turkey, and beef bones. A variety of toppings and add-ins, like a Calabrian chili oil, shiitake mushroom tea, or bone marrow, can be included for a supplemental charge, or guests can go for the heartier soups that are also available. We visited fairly early on when Brodo had just opened, so there were only a handful of people at the time, and thankfully, no wait. Chef Canora was manning the window and upon seeing our indecision, offered us a taste of each of the three broths, which we eagerly accepted. I have to say that of the three, the Hearth broth was my least favorite as it tasted a little too muddled and plain; I can definitely see the need for additional seasonings or add-ins to make it a more flavorful broth. The Grass-Fed Beef, however, was surprisingly aromatic, as the addition of a ginger made for a much more full-bodied broth. My favorite of the three was definitely the Chicken, however; while it was certainly the lightest of the three broths, there was an amazing amount of depth and flavor that had been coaxed out of the chicken bones, and the near-perfect seasoning of the broth was the (metaphorical) cherry on top. I'm not sure I can make Brodo something on my regular rotation, though. At a price of anywhere between $4-$7 for a cup, it makes for a pretty expensive beverage, especially given the fact that it's made using the unusable, leftover product from the restaurant. Nonetheless, it's good to see that in a time when chefs are ceaselessly trying to outdo each other to make the next over-the-top creation, chefs like Marco Canora are returning back to their roots, and with success. read more

I had been hearing about Brodo everywhere and I thought it would be so Paleo-chic to walk around the East Village with bone broth. I was loving the broth and one day ordered a soup for lunch. When I went for the second to last spoonful, I felt something strange in my mouth, an unfamiliar texture. When I spit it out, I saw that it was a large green insect. Was not aware of any 'broth craze' sweeping the country but as it turns out, I am fully on board with this latest food movement. I love broth and never really even knew it. But what's more comforting on a cold, drizzly winter day than a warm cup of soul-rejuvenating broth? Ironically, my first trip to Brodo's window was on a 65° day in December. Needless to say, the full impact of a healing cup of broth was not fully felt on this visit. Still, the 'BBC' (beef broth, bone marrow, chili) was satisfyingly rich while being mild enough for a whole cup to be drinkable. I also didn't detect any noticeable 'MSG headache' afterwards, nor did I feel bloated like I sometimes do after the 'broth' at the end of a bowl of ramen. Am a decent cook, it's really not difficult to make a good broth or soup.. and duh people "bone broth"... all animal based broths and stock are made using the bones of the animal. I've only recently gotten on to the bone broth thing and apparently I'm three years too late. The broth here is expensive. It's six dollars for a coffee cup's worth and 15 dollars for a take home pint, but that seems to be the going rate for bone broth in Manhattan. The stuff itself is very good. I tried the beef broth and the hearty broth and am a much bigger fan of the hearty broth. I brought some of the hearty broth home and made a fantastic miso soup from it. So despite the high price, which is why it only got four stars, the product is good and the store is providing us all with a service. My friend linked a write-up about Brodo on Facebook, and I literally was at the window 10 minutes later. (I was super lucky to actually have been in New York at the time, since that otherwise would've been an extremely expensive visit from my native Austin, TX) Can't recommend the Hearth broth enough. It's rich, hearty, layered with flavor, and just savory enough to satisfy the most sodium-craving hot-drink lover. You can definitely taste the hours of simmering that went into this elixir - according to WellAndGood.com, they use 40 pounds of beef shin; 12 whole turkeys; and 15 hens for this stock which also makes up the base for a number of Hearth (original restaurant)'s daily dishes. That alone makes me want to go try Hearth the next time I'm in town. Brodo is a back kitchen window attached to Hearth, and they offer three delicious types of broth in to-go coffee cups: chicken, ginger beef and hearth. Chicken is a simple salty delight. Ginger beef is arguably the most drinkable, with the ginger flavour making it a sort of savoury tea. Lastly, hearth is the complex multi-layered salty goodness that they are perhaps best known for. All of the animals bathed in this hot water, and it's put in a cup just for you. Chicken is my favourite, I'm a broth purist. This is probably the most detailed I've ever been about food flavours, and that's because broth is my steeze. I love salt, and as a Canadian I love anything that'll keep me toasty. I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS PLACE!!! I have had a sickness lingering since my AirBNB host infected me over New Years in Scotland. Three weeks later and I still feel like crap so today I decided NO MORE, I am handling this issue once and for all! I've never had bone broth, but I've heard about its magical powers, so I started googling the various places in the city that offer it. When I saw the coconut milk addition on Brodo's menu, I knew this place held my cure. I knew my boss would be super psyched to try it to, so I took his order and headed out into the miserable rain (although it's almost 60 degrees, so I can't really complain TOO much... except, you know, about that global warming and all...). Anyway, when I hopped off the L train and made my way to their window, I was greeted by the cutest smiling face! Well, there were two people there, with equally adorable faces, but I only saw one of them first. Anyway, they were so sweet and helpful and cheerful that they totally brightened up my entire day (seriously, the two girls working at 1:15pm on 1/24/19 deserve a raise). Boss man got the texas bbq chicken, and I got the gilligan chicken AND the deeply rooted beef (because I am SICK!). They wrapped them all up super tight so they wouldn't spill, labeled them, and popped them in a carrier (so convenient!). I just tried my gilligan chicken and IT. IS. SO. DAMN. GOOD!!!! I've decided I need to put coconut milk, ginger, and lime in everything I eat from now on. It smells amazing, it tastes amazing.... I'm just feeling pretty great. I started getting into the bone broth craze (mainly cause of Laura Prepon's book, The Stash Plan). It's amazing how much nutrients are packed into these cups of broth. You have a choice between chicken, beef and Turkey, hen, chicken, beef one. I prefer the last one that comes with a bunch of animals. The bone broths are about $7-10 a cup which is pricey but do keep in mind bone broths take over 12 hours to make. There's no seating area so you'll have to take your broth to go. They also sell containers of these so you can freeze them and use it when you want. Everyone should try this at least once! read more

I had the grass-fed beef broth with the addition of marrow. Normally I don't eat bone marrow, but I went for it and was glad I did. Who knew that take out broth would be such a big hit? Marco Canora, and thereby Brodo, did! I had heard about this place opening recently and wanted to see what all this broth-rage was about. A tiny window opening on the side of 12th street and 1st ave is Brodo. Just a take out window (minus the drive through) for rich, flavorful broths served both hot and cold. The cold versions are served in large glass jars (which require a $2 deposit) and ready for you to schlep home for use whenever you wish. The hot versions are served in your choice of size - small (8 oz) medium (12 oz) or large (16 oz) - and range from $4 to $9. You also have the option to add in some delectable ingredients - such as fermented beet juice or grass fed bone marrow. In addition to their basic broths, Brodo offers 2 homemade soups - the chickarina (complete with chicken meatballs and escarole) and the ribolitta (a tuscan veggie soup with cannellini beans, parmesean, kale and bread). Soups are served in just 2 sizes - small (10 oz) for $7 or large (16 oz) for $8.50. This was my first time sampling the broths, so I wanted to try them plain. I had 4oz of each the "hearth" and "gingered grass fed beef". The hearth broth is made of chicken, turkey and beef and is more complex in flavor that you might think. I sipped it while walking in the frigid cold over to Union Square and it was like an easy, user-friendly version of having soup to go since it is served in a coffee-style cup. The beef broth was tremendous. The gingered element came through and elevated this broth to the next level. Definitely my favorite. Next time I come back, because I will certainly be back, I will go out on a limb and add the bone marrow. I am sure that combination will be over the top delicious and rich, I can't wait. I highly recommend swinging by here and grabbing a sample. Though initially when I heard about the "broth to go" concept, I cocked my head to the side and thought "huh?", I totally get it now that I've tried it. I suggest going on a brisk day, which there are plenty of right now, as the warming sensation the broths generate may be lost on us in the warmer months. Iced broth?
