This was a great place and a great addition to the downtown Martinez area. It was a pleasant surprise . the wine selection was good had a good Spanish glass of red. And the Charcuteria plate was excellent complement to my glass of wine that was recommended to me my Jewel one of the wait staff. Life got busy and we have not been in awhile but went last night and Corey had a new menu and we tried the loaded tots and truffle french fries. It was so good! I went to Bar Cava for a girls happy hour. The space itself is kind of small but cozy! We sat at the bar and had a couple glasses of wine & the flatbread. Everything was great! I am honestly shocked at the rave reviews that this over-priced establishment has accrued. Management must be soliciting favors from friends or something. Wine was fine, but you've got another thing coming if you're charging $17 for a glass of wine in Martinez. San Fransisco prices for a lackluster, sub-par experience. When we asked the server what her favorite items were, she directed us to the cheese. Not a good sign. We should have listened to her, but wanted to order a sampling of menu items to get the full experience. We ended up disappointed with all 4 of our selections. The paquillo pepper appetizer was especially bad: cold peppers stuffed with what looked (and sadly tasted) like play dough. It was a potato stuffing of some kind, but chilled potato purée has no place on any menu. After three underwhelming menu selections we decided to go for the cheese recommendation. The cheese itself was delicious...a triple cream Brie! It was served with what I believe were an attempt at garlic crostini, but they looked and tasted like stale croutons. The bread was super low quality. We asked for some 'untoasted' bread, but that ended up being stale, too AND...it tasted like refrigerator; like it had been sitting in the walk-in for a few days. Service was very slow. Our bill ended up at about $90 once we tipped, and if the quality and service had met expectations set by a 4.5 star yelp review we would've had no problem with the bill. But spending almost a hundred bucks here was a very frustrating, foodie experience. read more

Fantastic place! I work nearby, so my work colleagues and I have been to Bar Cava a couple of times for after work happy hours! Great location in downtown Martinez - an excellent addition to the downtown area. Much more than just a wine bar! The owners/staff are amazing - very attentive and seem very happy to work there! The food is delicious - lots of Spanish-inspired tapas and dishes - so far, we've tried: marcona almonds, deviled eggs, pan con tamale, golden coast mac n'cheese (must try!), various flatbreads, various cheese, and various charcuterie meats! I absolutely feel in love with Bar Cava the second I walked in the door. And then there was absolutely wonderful wine by the glass and by the bottle! I just loved that they have high end reds by the glass. And the food was to die for! I am gluten free and they even had gluten free bread and crackers. I went to Bar Cava for the first time this weekend. I went with my wife who had been once before. We had a number of small plates and many glasses of wine. Everything was great. The wine choices are excellent as you are given choices that are a little different and definitely well selected. The wine director turned us on to Zweigelt an amazing Austrian wine. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and down to earth. It made for a great experience. This is not a pretentious wine bar where wine snobs look down on you as though you are a peasant unworthy of their time. I highly recommend coming here to try something a little different. Was in sleepy Martinez after a business meeting on Friday. My client had heard about this newly opened place in a renovated building, so we went for food and wine. The wine seemed a little on the expensive side for Martinez, but was good. We shared a sandwich and a flatbread. The flatbread was very good, but again seemed a little high priced. The sandwich was awful - 99% bread and 1% dry meat - Subway Sandwiches are better (and that is not saying much). The atmosphere was great - lots of old brickwork with arches here and there. Didn't see any steel supports for holding up the bricks in an earthquake, though - don't want to be there when the big one hits! I might go back in a year or two to see if they get their act together on making sandwiches and bringing down their prices one notch. read more

I always feel like I overpaid and that the food sounds better on the menu then the flavors in my mouth which means bad execution. Love the location though and the outside dinning area. Attended the opening on New Years Eve, glad we got there right at 6 because, despite saying that's when they were opening, they were already packed. First day complications aside, the food seemed overpriced (ordered $18 Charcuterie plate) and a little bland (Sirarcha aioli potatoes needed salt). They didn't have the "waterfall of cheese" which is the only food item listed on their website and was mentioned on their Facebook. There was live music, which my wife really enjoyed, but the performer was crammed in the corner, causing a large table of guests to have to move their table. My wife had two glasses of wine, and I had a large beer, ended up spending north of $50, which I thought, again, was a little high for the product we received. That being said, I'm sure we'll be back at some point, but not rushing back. read more

Stay for the wine not the food. Very limited menu and not exactly on the healthy side (i.e. hotdog and mac and cheese. Interesting pair with wine. We ordered roasted brussel sprouts and a goat cheese flatbread. The flatbread came out hard, over cooked and hard to cut into and enjoy. After 40 minutes the brussel sprouts never arrived. We left with no discount for the poor service and no bussel sprouts. I did enjoy the wine and decor. If they can work on a better menu and sprucing up the service, it would be a nice place to hang out. read more
