California pizza with zucchini and basil added

Calamari was nice and tender, meatballs were good and generous portions. Pizzas were subpar for the price, dry with not much cheese. Pay close attention to menu information. The California pizza does not come with mozzarella. Service was excellent. There was a mistake in the first order delivered, but they quickly made and delivered a new pizza and invited us to keep the incorrect one.

    12-inch supreme pizza

What an unexpected find: a great, locally-owned pizza parlor in the tiny town of Rifle, Colorado. Though I usually prefer Neapolitan-style pizza, my inner kid also appreciates a good New York-style pie, the kind piled high with cheese, meats, and veggies. Brickhouse Pizzeria specializes in the latter, though the sprawling four-page menu also touts Italian-American fare such as chicken parmigiana and spaghetti. On our recent trip though Colorado, my dad and I stuck with the basics (two pies plus an order of calamari) and were duly impressed. Fried calamari is a good litmus test for any Italian restaurant; if the kitchen can execute the perfect ring or tentacle (tender with a crispy, well-seasoned batter), then the remainder of the menu will likely succeed. I am pleased to report that Brickhouse Pizzeria passed my test with an A+. The rings and tentacles were tender throughout, a sign that they had been tenderized in milk prior to hitting the fryer. The batter was crispy with no residual oil at the bottom of the basket. The accompanying dipping sauces (a thick, herbaceous marinara and a zippy lemon garlic aioli) were also excellent and and likely made in house. For pizzas, we went with a 12-inch supreme and a 12-inch "Sinatra." The former was a classic done the right way, with fresh veggies, a quarter-pound of nitrate-laden meats, lots of shredded mozzarella, and a light, zesty tomato sauce that tasted homemade. The "Sinatra" was a concoction of funky toppings (Gorgonzola, minced garlic) offset by the brininess of green and black olives. The crusts of both pies were light and airy, a sign that Brickhouse proofs its yeasty dough prior to baking. I seldom review a place after a single visit, but I sampled enough of Brickhouse's wares to justify an enthusiastic four-star rating. It's not the "best pizza ever" (come on Yelpers, spare me the unqualified superlatives and superfluous exclamation marks), but it's a surprisingly good dinner option in Rifle. *"Family friendly" is my euphemism for a place teeming with obnoxious children in desperate need of Ritalin...or opiates.

Owners are Shervin and Maria. Sounds like they have family in several parts of the U.S., including California and the South, and also have strong roots in Grand Junction. And thankfully for the locals, because this has got to be some of the best Southern fried chicken and catfish in the state. I love that this is a family owned spot run out of a food truck that roves. They may be downtown or out near the Tractor Supply off of Highway 6 and 50, or at regional festivals and other events. Be sure to give them a call before you head over -- and you can place your order by phone as well. Which is a great idea. This food is fresh and can take 15-20 minutes before it is ready. My favorite is the catfish. Massive serving with a light, well-seasoned batter and served hot and very fresh. I could not believe you can get two large fillets and sides at only $21 -- pre-tip. That is an amazingly affordable price. I recommend fries (also a huge serving) and also the mac, which is both cheesy and a bit sweet. And check the menu for supply. They also have chicken, sandwiches, (very flavorful) wings and tenders, mash potatoes, sweet potato pie, greens, etc. Shervin and Maria, and one of their sons (who was helping out during one of my visits), seem like a lovely family who care deeply about Grand Junction and the food scene. They are very much local, while also open and welcoming to visitors. I look forward to seeing them again.

After a trip to Rifle Falls State Park I stopped at Shanghai Garden for an early dinner. The wait staff was awesome, very attentive and helpful. Very prompt with beverage refills. I'm a big fan of orange beef and have tried it at restaurants all over the world. Shanghai Garden's orange beef is the BEST I'VE EVER HAD. The beef was fried perfectly, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This is a very hard dish to prepare correctly. Previously, the best I had ever had was in New York City at a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant off Broadway. And theirs was tangerine beef, but close enough for comparison. I would definitely go back and I highly recommend this great little gem in Rifle, Colorado.

We wanted something casual and hearty during a winter outing in Glenwood Springs, and had walked by the tantalizing signage for chicken wings here several times before stopping in for lunch. Inside - dead. And because none of the usual indoor lighting was lit, the interior just seemed sort of sad, dirty, and run-down. There was one front-staff worker whose first language was definitely not English who was cleaning at the time and quickly sat us down with some menus. We had sort of a hard time communicating and getting our order down, but he definitely was doing his best. We got an order of Jamaican Jerk whole wings and Hot Honey regular wings. What you see is what you get - presentation isn't looking to impress, but portion size is quite ample. The whole wings are legit chicken quarters and the Jamaican Jerk was not playing around - a punchy jerk seasoning that had both of us drinking deeply from the spice, while the Hot Honey was a pleasant crowd-pleasing mix of flats and drums with a solid sweet to spicy ratio. All in all, we enjoyed our wings but probably would try coming when things are a little more lively so it's easier to ignore the ambiance.
