A nice restaurant, conveniently located in the historic center. The price may be a touch high but I've found restaurant meals here to be expensive in general. The quality is rather good, though. We had a starter order of fried calamari. It was hot, tender, coated in crispy panko, and served with a sweet chili sauce that may have had a touch of curry. It was utterly delicious but the serving size was a bad joke. Four rings of calamari for 13€. I don't care how amazing it tasted. That price for that tiny a serving is unacceptable. The mains fared better. Contrary to some other comments, the server did not try to upsell us or get us to order more than we wanted. The mussels in garlic were drenched in a wonderful garlic bath and the serving was entirely reasonable for one person. Of course it comes with frites, which will be refilled by the server as often as requested. I don't care for mussels so I had some challenges with the menu. I settled on the shrimp croquettes with salad (and frites, cuz Belgium). Very well prepared and quite tasty, especially the salad dressing of all things, but the filling was much wetter than I prefer. Service was competent and professional, with the server even asking if we'd like the volume of the music turned down. Definitely worth it if you like mussels. We actually came here to try the eel on green (apparently a known belgium dish). The only way I've had eel before was japanese bbq style (unagi don), so I was extremely intrigued as to what eel on green was. The sauce was like a pesto basil sauce, and the eel came with bone but was extremely soft and soaked in flavor. the green sauce was also perfect with the fries and complimentary bread. Actual rating 4.5. While Belgium isn't the culinary powerhouse like Italy or France, the country is internationally known for producing certain dishes well. Everyone that goes there knows about mussels and fries and assuming one isn't a vegetarian one of the experiences in Belgium will consist of eating this dish. In Bruges this was one of the recommended mussels and fries restaurants that was recommended by our B&B. We also found out after the fact that this was one of the recommend mussels and fries place from one of the tour guides in one of the day tours we took. Surely if two independent sources recommended this place it has to be decent. Location: On Breidelstraat. This street also is convenient for connecting the city's two major squares Markt (Belfort) and Burg (Stadhuis). If you want something sweet afterwards (recommended) the Chez Albert waffle stand is nearby. My parents are early eaters so they wanted to eat right when the restaurant opened at 6:30pm. The restaurant itself can accommodate a decent amount of people, which we learned as the restaurant started to fill up at normal dinner times. Service was a little on the slow side. For our party of 3 we had the following: - Mussels with garlic butter (€28.75). Though garlic butter was also on the top much of the liquid was at the bottom. You actually had to dip your mussels in it to get the full flavor. Also noteworthy is that the fries are served separately to ensure that they remain crisp and fresh. - Lobster with garlic butter (€49.50/550 grams). The lobster was drenched in more garlic and butter. Very rich - glad I had a Brugse Zot to wash it down. - Entrecôte with pepper or bearnaise sauce (€29). My dad got this as he wanted meat. I questioned why would anyone order a steak at a restaurant that specializes in mussels and fries? He was not surprised that it tasted awful. My mom and I just focused on the seafood items. This was a wonderful meal to end our first full day in Bruges as well as Belgium. One of my most favorite meals of the Belgium/Netherlands trip. read more

Solid but spendy restaurant. My wife got very good mussels - not quite as good as Spinola, but still good - and I got a spicy seafood stew. Location is almost too good, right off the Burg, heavy tourist traffic. Crowd was a mix of locals - who almost all got mussels - and tourists. The second best restaurant we ate at on our European trip and it filled my desire for mussels and frites! I found Breydel-De Coninc on Yelp and interesting enough it was one of the two restaurants that the owner of our hotel recommended for us to eat at. We made a reservation which is critical for dinner time if you want a high end or popular restaurant in Brugge or Brussels. The restaurant is very close to the main square so it is easy to find being centrally located. I ordered the mussels Provincial with frites and my wife had the garlic and butter mussels. The flavor and freshness of the mussels were outstanding in each of the large orders. Some of the best (both of our orders) I have ever had. They came with complimentary breads that were great to soak up the respective sauces. We finished with Meringue and ice cream with raspberry coulis. This was quite good, but I am not sure I liked the hardened meringue as it was tough to cut with a spoon. Food 4.5 Excellent Mussels that are prepared at least six ways. Service 4 Knowledgeable and attentive! Atmosphere 4 Pleasant surroundings Price 4.5 The food is very good, though not inexpensive. The value is there with the quantity and quality. Don't skip this place because it's a very touristy place. The food and ingredients are top notch. We asked our innkeeper where she would recommend getting the best moules frites in town. She said that although this place is very touristy, they had great ingredients and made good food. The owners were also people she thought highly of. She was right on all accounts. You just can't come to Bruges without having moule frites. It's tempting to eat them on the patio of a cafe on the plaza, but you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you do. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I've had the moules frites enough that I wanted to venture out a little. I had a creamy broth with fish and shellfish. It was really good. You don't wan this to be your only meal in town, because it does not show the character of some of the smaller places away from the tourist throngs, but it should make your short list for seafood. read more

My daughter wanted to find seafood and we needed a place that would be able to offer our friend celiac options and "clean cooking" - this can be hard to find when traveling across Europe but they served us well. The place is high demand so reservations are key. Our table had mostly seafood with a few getting the surf and turf. I don't usually love rating a restaurant based on service or decor (important but I like focusing more on food), however I felt so terrible during my meal that it was hard to come up with a rating that did not include this portion of my experience. I ordered the spicy mussels which were delicious, however my parents and I were not treated well by our waiter. I understand the concept of ordering enough for the entire party, however my parents are vegetarian and they accompanied me to eat here so that I could enjoy some mussels and fries while in Belgium. We were made to not feel welcome for ordering the amount that we did for three people. Perhaps I have to leave my parents outside and eat alone just to be treated well? They ordered a side salad and an onion soup (which even had pieces of ham but they just tried to eat around it and be a good sport). They also do not drink alcohol so did not order any. The waiter showed his disapproval and said we have to understand his position. I explained our situation and apologized, but he made us feel really bad. I would understand if it was during a really busy hour and we were taking up a table that could be given to a party with four seafood eaters, however it was late in the afternoon and there were other empty tables. I cannot remember the last time I was treated to feel so poorly with my poor parents who felt super guilty about not being able to help me eat. read more

Although my travels in Europe are limited, still some of the absolute best food: mussels Provencal, shrimp croquettes, delicious brown herbed bread, Belgian beer, and Pouilly Fumé wine. Okay, this place is REALLY expensive, but their mussels were so good! I can't say that they're WORTH it, but I really enjoyed my experience here. The servers are a little bitchy like people have said ("Can we have more fries, please?" "These fries are enough for everyone"). Hesitant at first as we always seem to find bad mussels back in the U.S. we were pleasantly surprised! We asked the waitress which type to get and she told us that the mussels with cream and white wine sauce are their specialty, so we tried those. THEY WERE AWESOME! We ate the huge pot (which is big enough for 2) and decided to order another flavor. We then tried the spicy ones. They were also good, but not quite as good as the cream sauce. It took them about 30 mins upon seating just to get water(which we had asked upon arrival). Took another 15 minutes for a server to come back to take our orders. The preceding post said not to skip this place just because it's a touristy restaurant. That is exactly right. Eat here. Go. Go now. Get on a plane, and go to Bruges. I think of myself as something of a mussels nut, and I think the mussels here were some of the absolute best I've ever had. The portions are HUGE, the service is good, and the beer is great. The never-ending plate o' frites is amazing, and the atmosphere is what you want - no frills and no real decor. It's just all about the food. This is my first time in Bruges, and I'll be going to this place again on my next trip. And, while there are tourists (we met a couple who knew some of the same people as we do back in the US and A), there are also locals. We asked our waitress at a bar about this place, and she raised her arm to show us a scar she had recently received from a hot pot of mussels at this place, instructing us to absolutely go there but to be careful of the hot pots. Head nods in agreement with all previous reviews: this is just off the central square, so it's right smack-dab in the eye of the tourist storm. And yet, and yet...pay that detail no mind. Hasten here when you have a hunger that can only be satisfied by moules frites! ***addendum to add: despite being in the perfect location for visiting throngs, I got the sense that I was eating among locals. It was a Tuesday lunch, and there was a Belgian couple next to me chirping along in French, an older Bruges couple stopping in for a 3-way-share pot of mussels before taking their grandson to the museum, and a table of businessmen. Locals clearly know this place has got the goods*** It was a chilly rainy day, so at sat at the back of the restaurant opting for kitchen-proximity warmth instead of cobblestoned street-watching. The service was very attentive, and within minutes I had some bread and some local beer in front of me. Pro tip: hold off on the bread; the portions here are enormous and you might regret lining your stomach with humble bread in advance of the main event. On the server's recommendation I went for moules with white wine and cream. Other options include an "aphrodesiac" (apparently, spicy) mussel-pot, mussels Provencal and other combinations of white wine, beer, and aromatics. The mussels came in a massive pot, supersupersuper hot. They were steaming, they were plump, they were perfect. In a small serving container on the side were the frites. Double-fried (I'm quite sure) the portion was very modest until I realized...BOTTOMLESS FRY PLATE! This is genius: instead of having a massive serving that you might not finish / will get progressively colder, you can just top up on your frites as you move through your lunch. I am coo-coo for condiments, so of particular note: the meal came with three sauces. A standard homemade mayonnaise, a "tartar sauce" (which was much more delicate than the North American standard. Think: herby, salty aioli) and a house-made sweet mustard sauce. Yep. Dip dip dip, slurp slurp slurp, dunk dunk dunk, sip sip sip...THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY TIME AT BREYDEL-DE CONINCK. I came to this place after reading some great reviews of their mussels. As I expected, not only the mussels, but the entire dining experience was excellent. The servers who act as a team were very nice to me. As for the mussels, the amount that they give you is HUGE. Multiple people who were in the restaurant at the same time as me commented on how large the portion was. The preparation was fantastic as well, I had the white wine and cream one, they also put celery in the pot with some type of greens. The broth was FANTASTIC! They serve great quality bread, and also provide still or sparkling water. They also have a great wine selection. All in all, I would one hundred percent recommend this place. Mussels have a lot of protein, and very little fat, so if you're looking for a boost for your immune system or a boost in STRENGTH, hit this place up. Highly recommended. read more

My cousin and I went here last night because of a friend's recommendation. Atmosphere was nice. Food was ok (had the famous mussels and frites), but we have nothing to compare it to since we spent just one night in Brugge. Here's why I give this two stars: the service was less than stellar. Our server was not friendly and when it came for us to pay our bill he charged us for tap water! Tap water! We had three small bottles that were clearly refilled. When we questioned the charges (it totaled 10 euros) he looked at us as if we should know how it works). Maybe this is a standard in Brugge, but he could have at least said that when we asked about the charge. Bottomline: do your research before you dine here. Very simple decorum, couple of acquariums with lobsters and decorative fishes, this place is without pretention but defintely serves a great pletoria of mussles (about 5 receipies) and original fishes (eels for instance) as well as the classics like sole, salmon, lobsters. We had the mussles (1xWhite wine and creem, 1xBrugge beer) and both were delivious, we went there for lunch and I regeretted not having tried their lobsters as it's always inpiring to see them alive in the aquarium. I would recommened this place for lunch as its atmosphere is a bit minimalist so this may not be of the taste of everybody for an evening with friends. The place is a bit pricey but so is Brugge, count 24EUR for mussles with fries and 46EUR for 600g lobster. NB: Service is not their forte, young waitress was smiley but not really into it. read more

This place was so overpriced, it wasn't even funny. With an attitude to boot. First of all, never ever listen, or be pressured by a bitchy server when they insist that one bowl of mussels is not enough for two people. IT IS. It is freaking huge! She had such an attitude about it. I know for a fact the locals do it all the time, because I watched them at other locations. She was just trying to get us to over order. Ridiculous. The mussels were 27 euros (do the equation people, this will be the most expensive meal you will have in a long time, just for one bowl of mussels) The mussels were O.K, they did not knock my socks off (for that price they better walk me home with an umbrella overhead) Plus she brings fries to your table and starts serving you, you find them as an additional charge on the bill afterwards (most places in Bruge, fries are included in the cost) So you are basically paying 46 US dollars for ONE plate of mussels and fries.
