Wow. Not a bar or street side eatery. A real restaurant. We made reservations and got a great seat upstairs by the window. Pork cheek stew fell apart as we ate it. Half order of mussels was plenty. Got garlic but it wasn't overpowering. Small cup of cauliflower soup was a nice compliment appetizer. Beer selection was good and not overpriced. We will come back when in the area. Our first real meal in Belgium was an absolute winner here! Unless there was more seating hidden upstairs or around a corner in the back, In Den Wittenkop is a pretty small place, so a reservation is probably a good idea. It's certainly a charming little place, and on a slightly drizzly day it was a very pleasant place to be in from the cold and rain. The Mosselen Natuur (plain steamed mussels) were big, meaty, well-cleaned, and tasty, but if you're not a shellfish fan, the Stoofpotje van Varkenswangetjes (pork cheek stew) is a great choice. Extremely tender pork cheek with minimal excess fat, and a lot of it, with a delicious red wine sauce plus much better fries than we'd had earlier on the main square made my night. I'd say that this was the best meal I had in our trip to Belgium, definitely one I'd repeat if we visit Bruges again! read more

Came here for dinner on a weeknight. So glad we made reservations as the host had to constantly turn down patrons. The six of us were seated and had great service. Unfortunately, they did not let us know beforehand that their credit card machine was broken. Luckily, we were able to go to a nearby bank machine to withdraw money for payment. The food was great! The pork cheeks in beer sauce was super tasty. The mussels were big and fat. Definitely a lot of mussels to consumer. The warm goat cheese salad was very tasty. The goat cheese was grilled to perfection. For dessert, we got ice cream with fresh chocolate sauce. Tasty! Would definitely recommend....and remember to make a reservation! read more

It was a brisk and chilly day in Brugge during off-season, so we found that not much was open. Being American, we didn't really want to be cliché and go for a hamburger, but, not a lot of options, so we thought "what the heck?" Well, have to say, our burgers were at the top of the list of European burgers consumed, even compared to an American Hotel restaurant. Nice size patty, lots of juicy flavor with a menu selection that you can try just about anything. Price was good, service was quick and efficient and they let us take our time at our table. We wouldn't hesitate visiting again if we ever find ourselves back in the area. read more

We were looking for a typical Belgium/Flemish meal and were directed here by locals. The food and atmosphere didn't disappoint! When we walked in the first thing to note would be the adorably quaint interior. We were promptly greeted and seated. We places our orders and while waiting they brought our small tasting of their cauliflower soup which was AMAZING! The main course came out within a very reasonable amount of time. My main course... the Rabbit Stew. Amazing! It was slightly tough to eat because of all the little bones but tender and exploding with flavor. The side of frites was perfect to sop up the gravy. Great spot for some Belgian and French cuisine near the heart of Europe's most well-preserved cities. Our first attempt coming here on a Sunday was a bust since they were closed, but we came back the next day and thank goodness we did. Turns out In Den Wittenkop would end up being our favorite restaurant in Bruges. The restaurant is small but mighty. They have a small seating area on the first floor with a tiny, tiny staircase that leads up to the second floor restrooms. The kitchen is located on top and all the food prepared is brought down through an elevator shaft of sorts. It really feels like you are in a sophisticated restaurant while dining here. My friend and I shared two entrees as usual: the mussels and fries, and their rabbit stew. The mussels were FANTASTIC and the best we've had the entire time we were in Bruges. There was plenty of seafood inside the pot and the garlic broth permeating through each shell made it even more delicious. I was also in love with the rabbit and how tender the meat was, nearly falling off the bone. Yum! I am so glad we came here for out last meal. No regrets whatsoever! read more

A little gem not far off from the Market in Bruges. Small and intimate space. My wife and I were part of a tour group but we branched off and didn't eat at the main square where most tourists ate. We had no regrets. For the appetizer we had the salmon as well as the shrimp croquettes. Salmon was fresh and juicy but the croquettes were the best I've ever had. The filling just oozed out as you bit into it. For the main course, my wife ordered the mussels and I had the pork cheek. The mussels were succulent, its soup was intricate as it had not just onions, but also bay leaf and other herbs. Pork cheek took a while to cook but was heavenly. You could tell the stew was prepared with great care, as the flavor of wine got deep into the dish. The pork cheek was so well-flavored and melt-in-your-mouth quality that my wife, who detests pork, actually enjoyed it and felt it was almost like beef. The frites (tip: order a side of their homemade mayo) were a perfect complement. If you have the time in Bruges, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

We order the lunch menu- two 1/2 portion of the mussel in cream and garlic Sauce (15 euro each, its 13 euro if you don't want any sauce and want the nature flavor) . The mussels were very fresh and both of the flavor were very good. Better than the one we had in Brussels. the atmosphere is casual and romantic. We made last minute reservations just before they opened and got a seat right next to the heater. This proved very valuable as we had just arrived and were cold from the walking. We had the cheese croquettes for a starter. They brought out a sample fish beignet as well, which was out of this world. She had the duck salad starter as a main meal, and he had the cod. Window shopping restaurant menus near our hotel, we knew as soon as we saw In Den Wittenkop that this was where we wanted to be for dinner. it's a small side-street restaurant, but nice and formal looking, in business something like 15 years serving regional West Flanders food. Our Belgian beers were good, our kaaskroketten cheese croquette appetizers were very nice with great cheese flavor, but then we got to the main event: Fabulous lemon sole with Flemish white asparagus on the side. SO tender, so tasty, as good as any top NY restaurant can do their Dover sole. And the white asparagus, a specialty of the area, was all we expected. There was no room for dessert. The sole was so memorable, nothing else mattered. Service was excellent, unhurried and relaxing yet professional. The atmosphere was all that we hoped for. Small, personal and special...... We were recommended this place by the folks at Canal Deluxe...and they certainly choose a place for us that had character, good food and a small personal atmosphere. The staff were young but knew and seemed to enjoy their jobs, the manager efficient and had a charm and smile that made for a relaxing evening. My eel main course deserves special praise, piping hot full of flavour and 10/10! There are oodles of places to eat Flemish food in Bruges, but this place seemed special and not just another tourist place as locals appeared to be there on a Saturday night. Probably the best meal we had in Bruges, the fries were my favorite out of all the places we tried. They also brought out a very small cup of cauliflower soup as a starter that was TO DIE FOR. We split the cheese croquettes which basically taste like fried Mac and cheese bites-delicious. Found this little restaurant on yelp and immediately knew it was a wise choice upon walking in. The staff was welcoming, despite not having a reservation. The menu is in both French and English which is always a plus. I opted for the traditional Flemish stew and my wife got the Sea Bass. Delicious food in a quiet courtyard. My friends had the salmon with a mustard sauce. They ate all of it ravenously, saying the restaurant deserved all of its stars! I had the cod in a butter sauce with hand cut french fries, very good but not the best fish ever. My husband had the mix grill meats with a little salad. He said his meat was a little hard. However, and it's a first for us in Bruges: a carafe of water for free and four small rolls of bread with butter, also included. Additionally, the wine was really good. The service was friendly. The space pleasant but not incredible. Overall, being in good company, we enjoyed our meal. I would say that the food is real cuisine, with a few details that would make it a 5. For instance, they forgot the mushroom sauce for my husband's meat. Of course, they brought it fast after I asked for it. Small details that can easily be worked out. This was an amazing find on our recent visit to Bruge. Quaint restaurant with old vintage metal signs as decor and light Jazz playing in the background. Staff was friendly and spoke several languages to accommodate tourists who spoke differently than the locals. Service was very attentive. The food was outstanding!!!! We loved this place. It's nicer than it appears in the photos. Feels like a local's place. Quiet. Good attention to detail and very gracious service. I had the fish which was perfectly prepared, albeit a bit traditional (lots of butter). My husband had a pork cheek dish which, as seems to be the case in traditional Flemish cuisine, was in a very rich yummy gravy. We also had a really nice, and well priced, dry French rose.
