Avoid this restaurant. It is a tourist trap. It looks beautiful inside and out but that is it. Everything else was a zero star. The service was terrible. We were ignored, looked down upon by a pompous burnt out waiter. They forgot 2 items we ordered and didn't bother to bring them when we mentioned it or to apologize. (One item was bread, not that difficult to bring....). The food was meh, below average. There are many other restaurants in Brugge/Bruges that have great food and service. Avoid this place. Recommended by our hotel for a place that serves typical local food, we wandered through the beautiful town of Bruges, hungry and curious. The place just opened but was already jam packed. Glad we had a reservation. We had a croquettes for a starter for €18 for two of them. One was still cold inside so the server took it away but never brought it back. After complaining he wanted to bring a new serving but I was glad we refused. The there was some giant portions coming our way. My wife had white asparagus, topped with chopped eggs, that came with a side of mashed potatoes. I had the rabbit stew, apple sauce and fries. The asparagus was cold ... again. She got a brand new plate after complaining. My stew was excellent but I couldn't finish cause it was so much. Overall the place is too pricey in my opinion but worth to visit again. Wonderful restaurant in a storybook town! It is a long time since we were there, but I doubt that it has changed except due to the Plague! They make what I believe is a world famous Belgian beef stew called Carbonnade à la Flamande and several dishes that begin with the word Waterzooi. Both are AWESOME dishes! The beef stew is made with dark Belgian beer. The Waterzooi is NOT a soup, as it sounds, it is more of a stew that is laced with cream. The food and service at this restaurant are absolutely top notch. To eat there, you must be patient because the food is prepared fresh for each customer and that takes time. For those who enjoy good beers, try ANYTHING Belgian and you will love it! read more

Looking for a cozy place in Bruges on a chilly winter night... This place caught my eye. Looks like a fairytale outside and inside- cobblestone walls and old wood. Smell of firewood inside. Waiters were completely accommodating to a traveling guy with no date on Valentine's weekend. The food is slow cooked by design. But worth the wait! Had the Belgium Beef stew and their recommended ale which was brewed within the Bruges city walls. Warmed me right up- this cozy little place. Beautiful experience! What a find, thanks to my partner. Our third visit to Bruges so my partner did a bit of restaurant exploration on the net to find restaurants a little away from the square. She was also looking for somewhere that served a GOOD stoverij, my favourite Belgian food. We booked a table, online, as the webpage showed the restaurant to be a busy place. We arrived early but we were shown to our table. Difficult to describe this restaurant except using the words quirky and quaint. Yes, that describes it perfectly. The service by the guys is second to none. It showed that they wanted this place to reach accolade of appreciation that it fully deserved. The wine list is extensive from extremely expensive wines down to the 'average' price. They do a good house wine in carafes, so everyone should be happy. There are, of course, the beers. Belgian beers are the best and, remember, there are beers that match the food being eaten. Very much like the French produce wines for the exact same reason. As we chose our meals fresh, homemade, bread arrived in, quaintly, a paper bag. Delicious. We ordered mussels and stoverij. There was a wait which, to us, proved it wasn't a microwaveable meal. It was being prepared as we waited. The mussels came in huge quantity and looked, and smelled, delicious. The stoverij in its own casserole pot was overpowering. I say overpowering in the nicest of words. My family were Belgian and the smell coming from the casserole took me back to my grandmother. OK, a few tears did emerge. There were no frites. Then the frites arrived. One of the guys came out with a massive colander of freshly cooked frites and went around the restaurant serving them from the colander with a slotted ladle. Very unique. We finished with an Irish coffee. Coffee???? Actually, let me say it was more like Irish whiskey, warmed in a glass with cream on top. Hang on, did you hear me complain??? Now, let me answer some of the stupid moans and groans of some reviewers on YELP and Tripadvisor. We found ALL the servers a fantastic bunch of guys ready to chat and help out in any way. Prices, OK a little more expensive than other places but, taking into account quality and quantity, totally worth it. On the square, for instance, I had stoverij which arrived in the plate. Four small cubes of meat in, I admit, a delicious sauce. Here, it arrived in a casserole dish. About five HUGE chunks of meat in a delicious sauce. In fact too much for one person, as were the mussels. We loved the place and would recommend anyone to make a visit and enjoy the atmosphere and the food. A Lucky find We found this Restaurant after reading a leaflet in the hotel lobby and because the leaflet offered a free Glass of Champagne with every meal we thought we would give it a go (Anything for nothing!!) We were not dissapointed and it has since become one of my favourite restaurants, not only in Brugge but in the World! Its difficult to find, hidden down a back street, but its well worth the hunt! The restaurant is a tradtional Belgian eaterie serving traditional food. Whilst its only very small, its intimate and cosy rather than being crowded. The food is home cooking at its best We ate Traditional Belgian Beef Stew, which is Beef that has been slow cooked in Beer with Caramelised Onions. Its simple but stunning. It was served in a huge Cast iron pot and the portions were enough to feed a family of 5!! The stew came with traditional Belgian fries, cooked to perfection and oddly Apple Sauce which went really well as an accompniment. We ordered from the Tourist menu, a three course menu at a set price and whilst some Tourist Menu's are overpriced and lack substance this one was amongst the best. I would without a doubt return to this restaurant if I return to Brugge. read more

AMERICANS BEWARE!!! From the moment we walked in it was apparent they didn't want us there. They pointed to a table across the room in a dark corner. Someone came over and tossed two menus on the table and walked away. We sat there watching food being delivered to the tables around us. Waited. Waited. Finally after a half hour I went back to the guy who pointed to our table and asked him if we had a waiter. He said "Yes, but you Americans are always in a hurry." I pointed out that we had been sitting there for a half an hour with no contact. I walked back to let my girlfriend know we were leaving. He followed me and asked her what she wanted to order. She said we were leaving. He followed us out again complaining about how Americans are in a hurry and don't know how to enjoy life. We had been loving Bruges up to that point, but it really did a number on our mood. Luckily we found another Belgian restaurant around the corner with excellent food, service and ambiance. Unless you want to be abused, stay away from this place. read more

Located in a side alley - you feel like you are stumbling upon a great Bruges secret - although the local taxi driver totally recommended this place to us. Thought it was going to be too touristy but not the case. It's a great find for traditional flemish food. We had the chicken waterzooi and the rabbit stew. Both were amazing and hearty. Almost made you feel it was cooked by your grandma who slaved over the stove all day. My only gripe was that I felt like I was wasting food as it's a bit much to eat the whole thing and being a tourist - we couldn't really take anything back. The chicken - was a whole roasted chicken and the rabbit almost felt like it was a whole rabbit...for 2 people it probably would have been better if we split an appetizer and one meal. The still water will run you about 7 euro...just fyi. But if you are going to eat somewhere slightly touristy - this is the place! Delicious. read more

We had a bad experience here. We had read the portions are large. We asked to share an order but were told "my boss doesn't like that," so we ordered 2 orders of the stew and could not even finish half of it. Service was so slow I had to walk into the hallway, confront a waiter, and request food be delivered to our table after waiting 75 minutes for course 2. Some of the meat was so tough it was not edible. We heard it was favored by locals. I think we caught them on a bad night, maybe due to a bus load of tourists? Could not recommend. read more

Was very disappointed with the meal and the atmosphere on the second floor. The view from the window of the ground floor was inviting and appeared lovely. However we were taken up very narrow steps to the second floor, Christmas overload. The beef stew was pleasant, but the Waterzooi was tasteless. Wanted to take leftovers, but they wanted to charge (which was not worth for these leftovers). Overall it is very touristy and I would not recommend. read more

The attractive and heavy leather menu covers were the highlight of our experience here. After being seated then ignored for twenty minutes, we were curtly informed we were not allowed to order what we wanted--a starter and a main dish with a large bottle of beer were insufficient, and there are no possible no alternatives or accommodations possible to the one one-main-per-person rule. I came here to get the waterzooi with fish. I arrived early afternoon so I sat outside to enjoy the weather, and it was really nice. They have two dogs running around too! Anyway, the waterzooi took a while to come out, but when it did, I saw why. The plate was HUGE, and everything was piping hot. The flavor was amazing, very creamy yet spiced. Fish was delicious, and there was a shrimp, some carrots, and potatoes too. It was way too much food for one person; definitely at least two people can share this and be full. This was an amazing find! We came here since they serve traditional Flemish dishes and we were excited to have a wonderful meal. Boy, were we not disappointed. The service was very, very good and our meals, mussels and a sausage platter - out of this world good! Not only was the food delicious, but they gave you so much of it; you could easily eat a meal here and not have to eat for the rest of the day. Pair that with super cheap Trappist ales and you have a match made in heaven. I will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in Bruges! read more

Why does this place only have 3.5 stars? It is so incredibly cute and delicious and fun! I had the chicken in cream sauce with veggies and my husband had the beef stew. They brought bread and we had beer and red wine (delicious). The portions were enormous and the food felt very special - there was definitely love in it from the quirky and fun staff. The atmosphere is romantic and the music really sets the scene. Maybe a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Delicious!! Highly recommended. read more

An amazing meal in a cool ambiance. This is a real Flemish treat. We had the beef and rabbit stews, both quite different and amazing (and huge). Skip the prix fix, this is all you need. De Vlaamsche Pot was a great choice and a fantastic restaurant to eat at while in Brugge. We happened on this place as the owner was also renting out our apartment room that we were staying in for the night. (Via AirBnB) The location was only down the street from us. They offered a small menu of Belgian beers, but in my opinion only enough to cover the basics. The food ordered was also fantastic and expensive. I did not regret pushing myself to eat as much as I did either, as I found that taking out leftovers was not an option. Most people who've slammed this restaurant have complained about that, but to me that doesn't a dealbreaker make. I could've eaten myself through that menu entirely if money was no option too, most things seemed to be good. Judging by the small slice of items our table ordered, it seemed that they had a good quality kitchen, versed in making both sea-food, and other choice cuts of meat. However the range of food seemed to placed this restaurant in the "gourmet basics" category. However, everything was cooked perfectly and delivered with excellent presentation. This was one of my favorite experiences in Belgium. I had the very traditional meal of mussels with fries and a beer. I sat outside in gorgeous weather and absorbed Bruges. I dined alone and was fine! Highly recommend this spot. It's pricey, but it was my "treat yourself" moment on my Belgium trip. So I ordered the same. 22 Euros, plus a glass of wine and water. The kitchen takes care and time in preparation -- this is not a quick in and out place. Thanks to Traveladvisor's great review we had a fabulous Christmas Day meal here. Bruges main Christmas event is Christmas Eve and there is a scarcity of good value restaurants open on Christmas Day but De Vlaamsche Pot was the perfect place to enjoy perfectly cooked and traditional Belgium fare at a fair price. On a cold winter's day this is definitely a great place to be fed and warm up, lovely atmosphere and every table was taken. My mother had a perfectly cooked steak, a huge piece and as Traveladvisor says fantastic fries, large and wonderful with a side of home made mayonnaise. I went for the tourist menu which included Flemish Beef Stew, which was amazing and a huge portion as described already. My fiance went for Black Pudding and that was very tasty, though not quite so generously portioned, more an average serving. I had a wonderful pannecotta style dessert which even beat the amazing waffles chosen by the others. Service was very good, despite the fullness of the restaurant. I would strongly recommend anyone looking for real Flemish fare to give De Vlaamsche Pot a try, they stay open all day long so very convenient for late lunches and early dinners. read more

I cant believe I stumbled upon this place, hidden just off the main street. I knew as soon as I saw it that I had seen it on Instagram numerous times. It is this charming little building with lanterns and plants out front. Inside it has the character of an old country home. We sat in the interior courtyard and it was lovely. The service was impeccable and the food was unforgettable. This was a truly unique experience. If you find yourself in Brugge I implore you to eat here! read more

A fine flemish restaurant offering solid regional cuisine. The flemish menu at 29 € is well priced and tastes good. Tle farmers pie as starter was delicious, the service exceptional. Great variety of wines from several european regions, ranging from 25 to three-digit euro amounts. Definetly get a reservation in advance as this place is filling up quickly. read more

Unfortunately, the visit to the Vlaamsche pot was a big disappointment. The service was poor, waited an hour for our dish and the asparagus swam in the fat of the butter. This also indicated to the staff, but unfortunately our complaint was not taken seriously. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Terrible service and such a tourist trap. Prices posted outside are significantly lower than what's on the actual menu. As was mentioned by someone else, you're not permitted to share dishes which I think is preposterous. Perhaps this USED to be frequented by locals but we certainly didn't see that and they appear to just be coasting by on former stellar reviews. I'd like to give this place 2.5 stars. We had the waterzooi with sea fish and rabbit stew. Agree with others that the portions are large, and the food is solid, but I wouldn't say amazing. We wanted regional cuisine and we got it but we also got really bad service from the waiter who was not helpful and impatient. I'd probably look for another place the next time I'm in Bruges since we really enjoyed our other meals there a lot more (even the ones in bars) read more
