Amazing bar down in a wine cellar with the best beers. From the street you would never know how awesome this bar is - nestled under a building you are down in a cellar that has an awesome vibe. The beers here are amazing with over 20+ on tap there is something for everyone - and some must try Trappist beers. I absolutely loved this spot. Only reason for not having 5 stars? The service. Although the place was relatively crowded, it was not very crazy at all especially when we first came in after opening and the staff behind the bar were kind of rude. I asked for a flight and they seemed annoyed they had to make one instead of just pouring 1 beer, and i was reading the menu and didn't have all my numbers ready to fire off - more upset. Additionally, my wife and I sat down at the bar about 1 hour after the place opened and we both had glass all over our chairs and now in our bottoms. The bartender was annoyed when my wife asked him to clean it - he said some glass thing exploded there before opening... so you didn't clean it? The highlight of this place is the space which is serving dungeon vibes. It's dark, cool, and definitely unique. The first time we came here we wanted a quick happy hour bev before a dinner reservation but we were tight on time. There is a sign at the entrance that says something along the lines of NO STANDING AT THE BAR and maybe added or implied to wait to be seated. We were not acknowledged for an uncomfortable amount of time, with us just standing at the entrance, watching the patrons already seated. Such an awkward amount of time passed with us just standing at the entrance, we decided to just take a seat at an empty table to see what happened. Nothing happened lmao. We just sat there for a very long time and then it was almost time for our dinner reservation so we got up and left. We were going to write it off as a weird place until we were unable to get into another place I wanted to check out so we decided to give it another shot. This time we were acknowledged (score!!) and seated in a corner with a very low ceiling at one part of the table. Good news is that GF is 4'10" so we squeezed her in nicely. It didn't seem like much of a choice, we HAD to get the beer flight. I was told by the person seating us to order at the bar which provides a little bit of insight into what happened to us a few days prior. I walked over to an empty section of the bar and was ordered to walk to another section of the bar to order. I waited behind someone else who was ordering. The bartender clearly exhibited strong irritation with the fact that I not only existed and patronized this establishment but that I dared order something to consume. It didn't come as a surprise given what I said above that he was also very impatient with my order, which I was attempting to communicate as quickly as possible but the stress of the situation made this more difficult. He barked at me that one of the beers we wanted to order was no longer available. I quickly came up with an alternative. When the flight was served to us, I noticed that we were given something that I did not order and something I ordered was missing. The beers were very good and they have a very impressive variety. Even though it was very unpleasant dealing with the bartender, this spot is so cool that it is definitely worth a visit. It would take minimal effort to display slightly less disdain to a customer to make the experience much more enjoyable, however. read more

After dinner, we headed over to La Trappiste to try a few beers. They're an underground, dungeon-esque beer bar. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 9:00pm) and while it was busy, it wasn't packed. The music was great and there's even fooseball at the front. People are there to chill and enjoy a few beers. There's 25 beers on tap (you can choose any in a flight). There's also a few speciality beers such as Westvleteren. - 2x Flights (€13,00 for 5) - generous pours. We opted for the Belle Vue kriek (our favourite of the bunch), La Trappe blonde trappist, Brugge tripel, cherry chouffe (didn't love the after taste note) and pêche mel niche (didn't taste any peach flavour). Our buddy went with Belle Vue kriek, troubadour magma, Martin's orange crush IPA, l'ermitage berto's breakfast IPA and huyhge special series J.I's IPA. His favourite was the last one. Loved this place!!! An excellent very cool underground bar with amazing atmosphere. It's like you're in some old castle dungeon and there's a bunch of beer you can drink by candlelight. We ordered a couple of the local Belgian beers and it was super cheap (like six euros a beer) and their selection is HUGE. The seating is first come first serve, you can usually find a seat after mulling around, my bf and I sat at a 4 top with another two person group and that was totally normal. Got a flight of 5 samples (cost is 13 euros). Full disclosure: I like stouts and malty beer and dislike IPAs and blonde ales, so just keep that in mind when reading my review! Cherry Chouffe was the best and tasted amazing. Nonkee Pater (strong dark ale) was the second best and was dark and rich. Everything else was eh, not impressive. Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel was all right, kinda too strong and pungent for me; Delirium Tremens wasn't that terrible for a golden ale (I'm not a fan of golden ales); Gulden Draak was our least favorite, just too strong and no other flavor. I also tried Delirium Red, and while I like the sweetness, it was too bitter/hoppy for me. One friend got Herkenrode Vesper (tripel), and while I normally don't like tripels, I thought it wasn't bad, like I could almost tolerate drinking it. Service was wonderful and friendly! read more

I have to agree with everyone else: this is a 5-star establishment for sure. It's not often you can find pick-your-own tasting flights over here, but Le Trappiste is at the ready to meet that need. The pours are 15 cl (or more depending on who pours it) each and you can pick five from the extensive draft list. It costs 12€. As a solo traveler, it was a challenge to finish the whole flight. Fortunately I wasn't a fan of one beer so I left some behind without feeling bad about it. The rest were really good though! Vibe in here was cool and medieval/historic. I'm glad I arrived early enough to get a seat. Drinking 5 beers without a seat could prove difficult. read more

Great place for beers! They had 21 beers on tap, with a good mix of Trappist and other beers. Very interesting flavors too, like cherry beer. You can choose any 5 for your own custom tasting for 13€. They came on a paddle, and they looked like they were about 3 oz pours. The place was packed on a Saturday night, as to be expected, but we were still able to find two seats at an oak barrel (being used as a table). The atmosphere is as excellent as the beer selection (my husband was thrilled to find three varieties of the highly sought-after Westveltern, including a 4-year-old). They open it in front of you and give you the cap to make sure you know you're getting the real deal. In addition to some bad-ass bottles like the Westveltern, they also have a fantastic tap selection and you can order a flight of 5 for $10 (sizes seemed bigger than US's standard 5-ounce pours but that may just be because they use a different glass style). We wished they served food, too, so we never had to leave! (They do offer one food option -- a cheese and sausage plate, but we were starving so we headed elsewhere for dinner). It was a passing comment from our waitress a few nights before to make Le Trappiste a stop while we were in Bruges, and I'm so happy she said it! If we lived in Bruges, I think this would be a regular stopping place.
