Big pile of mussels. Indian style. Delicious.
    maggie b.

Had a great dinner tonight with friends at Georges. Service was spot and fun. But best of all was the huge bucket of mussels each of us got along with some really good choices of broth. I got the Indian which was curry based. Good wine selection as well. Best meal so far in Gent.

Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

So, instead of giving us a second to look thru the menu for another item, when we asked the female server to come back while we looked, she got an attitude, rolled her eyes, mumbled something and stormed off. There are just too many GOOD places in this area to eat at, to put up with just plain rudeness. We paid for our drinks, and left to another eatery nearby.

When informing them we were there for an 8pm reservation we're told to go up stairs. When attempting to go upstairs, we found the staircase to be mostly blocked by tables. We returned to the server to confirm where to go telling her the way we went was blocked by tables, and she looked at us very irritatingly and said, "go around them". After going back upstairs and weaving between tables we found a staff member who we again told we were there for our 8pm reservation. We were given an option of 2 inside tables or patio. The patio looked so inviting with the heaters and atmosphere we chose the patio. When going back down to the patio we told the before mentioned server we chose the patio and were told no, the patio was closed because it was only her and she couldn't serve us. At this point it was now very awkward, and we chose to leave instead of trying to again accommodated for a table. So disappointing.

A nice restaurant, conveniently located in the historic center…read more The price may be a touch high but I've found restaurant meals here to be expensive in general. The quality is rather good, though. We had a starter order of fried calamari. It was hot, tender, coated in crispy panko, and served with a sweet chili sauce that may have had a touch of curry. It was utterly delicious but the serving size was a bad joke. Four rings of calamari for 13€. I don't care how amazing it tasted. That price for that tiny a serving is unacceptable. The mains fared better. Contrary to some other comments, the server did not try to upsell us or get us to order more than we wanted. The mussels in garlic were drenched in a wonderful garlic bath and the serving was entirely reasonable for one person. Of course it comes with frites, which will be refilled by the server as often as requested. I don't care for mussels so I had some challenges with the menu. I settled on the shrimp croquettes with salad (and frites, cuz Belgium). Very well prepared and quite tasty, especially the salad dressing of all things, but the filling was much wetter than I prefer. Service was competent and professional, with the server even asking if we'd like the volume of the music turned down. Definitely worth it if you like mussels. Maybe not so much if mussels aren't your thing.

The sauce was like a pesto basil sauce, and the eel came with bone but was extremely soft and soaked in flavor. the green sauce was also perfect with the fries and complimentary bread. The bread was actually so soft and good that we asked for more! We also enjoyed the fish soup and the very fresh oysters!
