Great service. Great food. I love diners. I can't get enough of them. I was traveling in Reading with my kid, and Breakfast Hut happened to be across the street from us. From the moment we walked in, we could feel the love and warmth. Even though the front desk was busy, we were immediately greeted with a big warm smile. The dining room was almost full, but our waitress came by quickly to get our drink order. Within a few minutes after we sat down, a line already formed by the door. Nevertheless, our waitress still had time to come by to check on us periodically throughout our meal. I had the French toast topped with warm apples and a side order of bacon, and my kid got a chicken salad wrap. I am a big French toast fan, but this was the first time a place gave me a choice to add apples as a topping. It was amazingly delicious. The French toast had the perfect crust to softness ratio. The apple topping gave it extra deliciousness. I know, I know, it was already pretty sweet, but I still had to add syrup on top because French toast isn't French toast without the sticky syrup. I usually cannot finish a whole order of French toast, but I ate this whole plate up and wished I had an extra stomach for seconds. My kid liked the chicken salad wrap, too. The chicken salad was dressed properly (other places usually have too much mayo.) It was well balanced with bacon, lettuce, and tomato. Our extra plate of bacon was deep-fried nicely. Breakfast Hut is what a diner should be-great food, warm service, and a welcome-home atmosphere. If I get to come back to Reading, I'd definitely visit this place again! read more

Such a wonderful diner for breakfast and lunch. Basic food done well. My eggs are always cooked perfectly. Sometimes the hash browns are dull with no flavor so they have to do better there. The food is just gross everything looks tossed on the plate. They dont look like they've cleaned the floors in years....the lady with the silver hair, she looks disgusting. Im not sure of the position she has there. But she has a mustache sweat pants on, shoes I wouldn't even let my children wear to the point they should be in the trash. Doesn't look like she's washed anything ever. Only a few, of the servers look great some of the others look homeless or homely. I would never recommend anyone coming here !! The only thing I didn't like about this place was the bathroom and the chipped beef. It was very bland, no taste really at all. But the waffles are fluffy and amazing. I regularly frequent the Breakfast Hut to meet friends or just to have a quiet breakfast and read. This past week, the RASR (Reading Association of School Retirees) met there for a luncheon meeting. There were approximately 60 people in attendance. We were able to order off the menu & pay individual checks. From the moment all stepped in to the restaurant, you were warmly & sincerely welcomed (that is a positive norm here). All ordered and what appeared to be minutes, the orders were being delivered in an orderly fashion, the food was prepared to your liking, and the meeting began. That's not an easy feat for 60 people - but, the girls did it and all with a smile! If you haven't tried the Breakfast Hut for yourself, family or a group meeting (small or large), give them a call and you, also, will be most pleased as I am always. This place may not be the best breakfast I have ever eaten. Some of the items are very good. Some of the items are pretty standard fare. I don't think you come here to have a special breakfast. No, you come here because the place is very familiar. You come here because it's reasonably priced and hearty. And you come here because the waitresses make you feel at home. Pretty typical diner breakfast place. The prices are good -- great even if you get there before 11AM for the specials -- and you get plenty of food. It's pretty average on quality -- I have eaten here numerous times and had a variety of things, but nothing really stands out. Their home fries are so-so (under browned for my taste, and they don't use enough grease to fry them), and their bacon is not a brand I really care for. I had their sausage gravy on biscuits on my latest trip, and while there was nothing wrong with it, I would not order it again. It was just not as flavorful as I was hoping for, and I wanted to try something different than my usual. Bottom line, it's average food at a great value. read more

A little bit more than a typical greasy spoon diner. The menu offers a wider selection than bacon, eggs and sausage. There are always some type of bizarre concoction, which doesn't mean bad. For example they may have cheesesteak crepes, and from the sounds of it you may get indigestion, but it I think that is what makes this place stand out from the next diner down the street. One thing I absolutely LOVE about this place is the fact that no matter when you go, they have a seat ready for you. I may have waited once. This place is huge, I mean HUGE! Since my favorite breakfast is cliche (two eggs over easy, white toast, hash browned potatoes, and bacon) it is easy to Gage this place to the next. I must admit I love my bacon crispy, and they can make over easy eggs like a politician can make promises. My favorite meal that I referenced only cost $9.07, and I left a $2.93 tip, and I can not forget to mention I had a cup of coffee and a large OJ. Which reminds me, they are always prompt to warm or refill your coffee. As far as what I would change about the place? I would have to say I am not a fan of the sausage links. My favorite sausages are the really fat pork links (I believe they are made by Leidy's) however it is very difficult to find a place with these links. Ray's diner car in Norristown has them, as well as the Nudy's chains. Other than that it is really difficult to find a place that carries this sausage, and unfortunately that is why I didn't rank it a 5 star. 4 Stars isn't bad, I like the place and I believe you will too. Every diner in America has it's own neighborhood feel. I would have to say this is the best diner style breakfast joint in Reading. read more

Only went here due to a whim my 96-year old grandmother had to eat here. Packed with swarms of elderly folks. Besides one couple with little kids, I was probably the youngest person in the place by at least 30 years. Best thing about breakfast here was literally the ice water and the rock-bottom prices (less than $5/person including tip). Burnt toast, tasteless frozen hash browns, canned hollandaise sauce that was plain nasty, and cheap filtered coffee that tasted burnt. The topper was that they didn't even have Heinz ketchup. Understand you have to shave some corners to offer cheap prices but you can't even afford to spend a few extra pennies on real ketchup? They did give you a big pile of no-taste, cheap food though. Waitress wasn't friendly, didn't come back after our food was served or to refill our coffee. Mystifies me how places like this draw big crowds when I occasionally drive by but I guess if you have really cheap prices and give people large portions you can draw crowds in Berks County especially among the seniors. I was just bummed that my grandmother didn't like her food & that our waitress didn't even come back to top off her coffee. read more

Breakfast Hut gets four stars, because it nailed the characteristics of what a good greasy spoon should: (1) FRIENDLY and fast service, (2) tasty and hot breakfast food and big portions of it, (3) good coffee with plenty of "warm-ups" constantly offered, and (4) CHEAP prices. My husband and I ventured to BH on a local's recommendation after bad experiences at two other breakfast spots (Exeter Family Restaurant and Tomkat), all in one morning. The exterior of BH could could badly use a facelift, as it is very dingy and outdated. However, the interior is very bright and clean, and we were promptly and cheerfully greeted by a young host (and also with a huge blown-up picture of John Cena eating at the diner, giving you the thumbs up). The menu is your very basic, standard diner-type food. Our waitress was a sweet gal, and our food arrived in no time (seriously, all of this was such a welcome change after we walked out 15 minutes earlier from Exeter). After a previous day of caloric overindulging, I opted for a vegetarian omelette made with Egg Beaters, the fruit cup and coffee. My husband also had coffee, but loaded up (as one properly should at a greasy spoon), on a real breakfast platter with three eggs over easy, homefries, toast and a side of bacon. We both agreed the coffee was very good, and while the "fruit cup" was really just cubed cantaloupe and honeydew melon, I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and tasty the melon was. I was also pleasantly surprised by how tasty the vegetarian omelette was: greaseless and tender (rather than oily and rubbery as diner omelettes - especially made with egg product - are wont to be). My husband LOVED his breakfast ("that food was the sh*t!"), and I did cast jealous looks at it: the potatoes were REAL potatoes, cooked with peppers and onions, just how he likes them. The bacon was crisp, and he was so full from the hearty portion that he couldn't even nibble his toast. All of the waitresses were sweet, several of them came over to offer us warm-ups even though we weren't their table. The guy at the cash register was very friendly and sincerely thanked us for stopping by. And the final bill was ridiculous - for two hearty breakfasts, a side of bacon and two coffees, the bill was $17! (So with that kind of friendly service + cheap prices, a 30 percent tipping scale seems a bit more appropriate...but now I'm just being bossy). read more
