Everything was just ok - portions are massive, so if you're going to knock out a hangover this would be the perfect spot, but I probably wouldn't go back. Went in on a Sunday, they were insanely busy. Ordered the crepes which were incredibly disgusting. They were a weird jaundiced kind of color, sticky and rubbery, more like an undercooked pancake - although an undercooked pancake would have tasted better. Definitely not what a crepe is supposed to look, taste, feel like. At any rate, the menu did not include an accurate description (they were filled with a cream cheese or maybe ricotta, not sure, there was no mention of this) otherwise I would have ordered something else. I am sorry I didn't take a picture to show just how bad this was. My friend had the basic eggs and bacon which is hard to screw up. He was happy with his meal. Give them the benefit of the doubt, they seem to stay busy but maybe that is for lack of other options in the area. Who knows. I would recommend staying far, far away from the crepes. Ok, here's my thing about Valeries. I went to Valerie's for the first time for breakfast just before Xmas with a friend, my mom and mother in law. So there are four of us in a booth. Service is prompt and friendly. Coffee was quick to the table and hot. So far, so good. Menu options are plentiful. We order. We wait a normal amount of time for our breakfast...coffees are refilled. Breakfast arrives. Valerie's, there is simply too much food served!! It was good, no doubt, but that is just an unreasonable amount of food to bring any one person. Once all the plates were on the table of this booth, we were literally balancing stuff around to make room for it all. I ordered an omelet. Side choices are two pancakes or hash browns and toast. Who doesn't like pancakes?? Right, so I ordered pancakes. Um, I received a huge plate full of a huge omelet and a second plate with two disks that looked like they should have been wheels for a '67 Chevelle or something. I mean seriously.....I plowed through about 2/3 of the omelet and maybe a sixth of the pancakes. I left feeling guiltier about the wasted food than satisfied about having a tasty breakfast. Valerie's, cut your serving sizes down a third and cut a buck off the price of the item. That would still be more food on the plate that some people in this world eat in a week. We came here because of the Yelp reviews. Pros: The portions were huge! My husband has the taco omelette - good with tons of meat, not much lettuce. Came with a side of 2 large pancakes which we gave to one of our kids. Other kids had the happy pancakes which were also huge but they had fun trying to finish them. Also, we thought the service was great!! Saw people complain on here about them but we had no issues. Maybe it was because we were there before a big rush. Cons: The hollandaise sauce was disgusting. I had the eggs benedict and had asked if they made it from scratch. She said no, but that it was really good. I doubt she has ever had real hollandaise sauce because it tasted like thick yellow gravy. Yuck! It would have been nice to have better utensils. They were like a cheaper version of school utensils. I remember coming here when this place was still just a few months old. Now that I reside in the area, I'm glad to see it has been doing well. While a new logo has been erected over the restaurant, the menu is virtually the same and the portion sizes are still huge. With my mom in town, we shared a Denver omelet ($9.95) with hash browns and whole wheat toast. Apparently, this hungry panda has even learned how to share food with family. Even when the portions were split equally in half, my mom couldn't believe the size of what she had to conquer. So basically, I ended up eating 3/4 of the meal. I still could have eaten more. The omelet contains 8-10 eggs, making it quite a hefty guy even before adding all the awesome Denver omelet ingredients. In the sea of bell peppers, onions, and cheddar cheese, the large thick chunks of ham really made this omelet special. A generous amount of fresh ingredients. Excellent hash browns, with a crispy golden brown on the outside. Enjoyed it all with a cup of coffee. Doesn't get much better than that. I'd definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family. It's become one of my elite places to head to in SW Washington. read more

If you want large portions for breakfast I'd say this is the place to go. They have some nice combination options so that you can mix and match a wide array of breakfast foods. However the service us just ok. They often have a line which baffles me since this is a last choice place for me. The two stars is because the place just isn't very good. Based on taste I would assume everything comes straight from the freezer. It's basically your generic "chain" food diner food, just not from a chain. If you want some OK-ish food (I guess) or are in need of a huge breakfast give it a shot. If you want something special or memorable or "oh my god this is so good" this is not the place. read more

I don't appreciate being completely ignored. The waitress handling the waiting list first refused to put my name on it, then went off to bus tables and didn't come back for five minutes. In that span of time, I watched other people walk up and put their own names on the now unattended list. And the waitress still never came back, so we simply left. I'd never been there before, and now I'll never give it another chance. There are plenty of restaurants that will be glad to seat me and take my money, and I'll be exploring those ones instead. read more

Saw that they don't except reservations online and on yelp. Today (mothers day)I went in at 10:30 hoping to be seated by 11 when my parents were slated to arrive. The host said the wait time was roughly 20 minutes. After over an hour and a half of waiting we asked a server if they planned to sit anyone waiting at the 9 open tables. They stated that the tables are for large groups/reservations.. and booths surrounding the perimeter were for walk ins. Afterward, I informed them to please update their website so that others can plan accordingly. read more

Although I've known about BAV for about a year, never had the opportunity to make it over. This past Saturday I was in the area and stopped on in. There was about a 20 minute wait, but it was 9:30 in the morning, so that is to be expected for a popular breakfast place, considering we have very few in Vancouver. Since I was by myself, I opted to sit at the Counter. I was greeted promptly. I later found out, it was Valerie the owner. The menu had it's usual breakfast fare and as I scanned the plates coming out of the kitchen the portions were very generous and reasonably priced. My first goto at any new breakfast joint is the Corned Beef Hash. I asked Valerie if it was homemade or canned and I was informed they have 2 options. Canned or a frozen product they obtain from a place in Portland. Valerie said though it's very tasty and I recall having something similar before at other places so I opted for the latter. One of my key drivers of determining a good restaurant is how the eggs come out. I always order Over Easy with my hash and some places are spot on, while others the yolks are not runny enough. My eggs were spot on. Whites cooked and yolks, runny. Good Job! The hash did not taste frozen at all. In fact, had I not known it was a frozen product, I would have thought they made it in house. Definitely good Corned Beef Hash at BAV. I also enjoyed their menu providing two options. A full breakfast for about $9-$10 or a smaller version for about $7-$8. There was plenty of food on the smaller version. Another plus was I had the choice of Potatoes, Pancakes, Toast or Biscuits and Gravy. I went with the Biscuits and Gravy and they were tasty. If' you've read my other posts about Biscuits and Gravy in Vancouver, it's hard to find a decent place. Biscuits provides a good Biscuit but the gravy is subpar. Carol's Corner provides a good gravy but the Biscuit is subpar. Here at BAV you get a good biscuit and a tasty gravy. BAV also serves Huffin-n-Puffin Hot Sauce. YIPEE!! This is a locally made hot sauce and not many places carry it. Kudos to BAV for doing so. I was impressed too by the service. Maybe it was because I was at the counter, I don't know but I was checked on frequently and everytime my Iced Tea was low, it was refilled without having to ask. I'll definitely go back to BAV again and try some of their other Breakfast offerings. read more

As soon as you walk in, you notice how very bright it is. Maybe too bright...it also seemed kinda noisy even though the place was maybe 30% full. No one person was loud, it's just that the place lacks any intimacy, I guess. It seemed to take a long time to get menus and a drink order taken but when the waiter did show up, he was very friendly. Got the American breakfast with bacon and hashbrowns. It was OK. Hashbrowns were somewhat oily... This place is just ok. If you are in the mood for breakfast, this is as good as any. I would only suggest this place if you are shopping at the Trader Joe's across the street, was in the mood for breakfast, and didn't want to go to Shari's. Not much can be added about Breakfast @ Val's that hasn't already been committed to cyberspace. We loved the food there, and affirm that the portions are huge, the overall value is very good (Hey! you can't spell 'value' w/o the letters V-A-L), and the service, warm and personable. Val has been on her game in the Couve for about 2.5 years now, after refining her most sacred shao-lin technique with her hot pots, in downtown Portland "for about 15-16 years." Deserving special mention from the menu were the triple-decker Ruebenator, and the philly cheese-steak scramble. So much tender, juicy meat! I'd drive out of my way out to the Couve, to order either of these entrees again. The one glaring omission in Val's business model is the lack of accessibility. She's only open a few hours a day. True, she's built a booming business with legions of adoring fans and in all likelihood simply doesn't need to hire more staff to stay open later. The problem being, there's a vast cross-section of potential and acutal fans of Val's that work swing or graves that are largely, effectively cut off from having access, and this little diner is a place that deserves plenty of exposure to the masses. Should Val ever consider later hours (esp on weekned nights), that'll be just the bump needed for instant 5 star accolades. If Stepping Stone can do it, you most definitely can dooo it. Oy... Where to start. We arrived at noon, no one else in front of us. It took 10 minutes for a staff of 2 to clear a table for us. They appeared to be torn between serving customers and being cleaning staff (I would say bus boys, but that does not seem fitting). The food was ok, not stellar. More dive bar/greasy spoon diner. The serving were over sized and completely fitting of the obese American diet (so save your waste line and take left overs home.) Out of a table of 5, only 2 people had a correct order. Wow, I have to say this place made a really good impression on me to get 5 stars for a first time visit. My father in law and mother in law had texted me and told me of this place, so we got in the car and met up with them for lunch my father in law recommended the biscuits and gravy, so that is what my husband and I ordered "The Redneck B&G" for $7.95 it comes with 3 biscuits, 3 eggs, and a sausage patty and its covered in some very tasty gravy. When it arrived it looked yummy, but I've been to alot of places where looks are deceiving, but not for here. I took a bite of biscuit with gravy and its like it melted in my mouth between the rich creamy texture of the gravy and the perfectly cooked biscuit it was delicious. I tried the sausage patty which was ENORMOUS it was thick and bigger than a hamburger patty. I really liked that, I have found a sausage patty that big in a very long time, my ggs were a little over done but that is ok I still liked them and I still ate them. I checked out the rest of the menu, their pricing is awesome, everything is affordable. I really can't wait to go back and try them again, I highly recommend that everyone try this place, if you don't, your missing out on something good. read more

I went here based on glowing recommendations from coworkers and the reviews here on Yelp. The inside is a little strange. I felt like I was eating in a retail store with the carpeting and florescent lights. I understand they just opened so it may still be a work in progress. I ordered hot apple cider to drink which was a mistake. The cider was lukewarm and had an off taste to it. The waitress came back around and said that if there was a problem with the cider she would fix it because the restaurant was still figuring out the correct proportions. I told her it tasted off and she brought another packet of cider spice. I was disappointed because I was hoping for real apple cider not a spice packet. Also it wasn't replaced she just gave me another packet. I ordered the perfect breakfast. It was alright but really greasy. The bacon was the best part of the entire breakfast. Granted I was only able to eat half the food because of the enormous portions and I was full until dinner. I might try this place again after they get everything in order. read more

Sadly, my Valerie's experience was not amazing. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash after a lackluster response from my waitress when I asked her what dish was their best. I ran out of coffee twice, my well done toast was browned ever so slightly and was chewy. I did not see the waitress again until after I had finished my meal. The food was just a little better than average. The coffee was much better than average but the service was lacking. Valerie's was nothing special, not unique in any way. With places like Carol's Corner Cafe in the neighborhood this Yelper sees no reason to visit Valerie's again. read more

Today was our second visit to Valerie's and we left happy and stuffed, again. We arrived at about 10:30 this morning but had to wait about twenty minutes for our table. I consider this a great sign :) My husband ordered the Triple Decker Reuben sandwich with hash browns and I ordered the French Dip with french fries and a salad. (the kiddos got typical breakfast fare: bacon, eggs, toast, ham and hashbrowns) My salad was crisp and fresh and my sandwich was practically orgasmic. The au jus was bursting with meaty flavor and complimented my simple meat and cheese sandwich perfectly. My hubby proclaimed his Reuben the best he's had in a long time and scarfed the whole (huge) thing down in about ten minutes. The kids enjoyed their breakfasts thoroughly. Oh, the only downside I experienced was the lemonade. Waaaaay too sweet! I had to add almost a full glass of water to mine in order to make it drinkable. As long as you can snag a booth, this very crowded breakfast joint is quite a bit of fun. I will be blunt...food is just above average. If you want gourmet breakfast, this may not satisfy. But if you want comfort food, make sure you're wearing stretchy pants. Huge portions of everything. One entree is enough for 2 or 3 people. They even split plates before serving! This really impressed me as we always share entrees. I would say their bacon is the best we've tried. Perfectly prepared, lean for bacon, and thickly sliced. Our servers are always friendly, though rushed. Can't fault that considering the popularity of this place. Recommend ordering less and sharing. When the dish comes with a side of pancakes, know this is more than like a second entree of carb heaven. Sometimes comfort food wins! read more

I was super excited to try this place after reading all the good reviews. Unfortunately my experience was so so.... Took about 15 mins for anyone to take our order and that was after I asked several times. Took another 20 mins for our food (ham and eggs not to complicated) and then the server never came back for refills or our check. We finally had to ask someone else for our check....definitely an all around poor service experience. Food was ok nothing special so that plus the poor service and lots of other choices means we probably wont return. So disappointing... read more

Great place for a down-home breakfast!! Lots of just plain good comfort breakfast foods available. My family and I have frequented this breakfast joint quite a few times, and have always been impressed. Food is not spectacular, but good, well made, and lots of it. While my favorite is the Eggs Benedict, my brother-in-law always gets the chicken fried steak, and can never finish it (which is saying a lot). The place is quite busy, especially on weekends. If you show up on a Saturday or Sunday morning, be prepared to wait for a little while. It can be a little noisy, but nothing unusual for a breakfast diner. Usually on weekends in the summer, you can also generally find quite a few classic cars parked out front as well. We will definitely be going back! read more

Well I came here for the first time it was pretty busy understandable. I have a disability and use a cane to try to help me walk and I stood there for 10 minutes and no one even asked me anyting. Also no one even attempted to give me eye contact so I can get there attention. It was like I had the plague or something I don't know . All I wanted to do to see if I can sit at the counter. A truly magnificent experience in flavor and service. Absolutely worth the drive from ANYWHERE, in my case from Lake Oswego Oregon because I have never had a better down to earth meal and the coffee is pretty good too. I''m tired of those other chains serving staple foods with no flavor and the people who work there look like they just don't care and just want to die. Not so at Breakfast At Valerie's... I sat enjoying my fresh coffee watching this amazing woman named Lacey running around with a HUGE smile cleaning up tables, helping customers with their kids, taking orders, wiping down messes, greeting new guests as they walk in the door and never standing still for more than 5 seconds. Another great young person here is a young man named Anthony who must be a mind reader as he fills peoples coffee without a beat wearing a sincere smile. Its amazing to see him juggling 5 plates on his sleeves and filling coffee everywhere. Lacey and Anthony are just a few prime examples of the staff there wearing sincere smiles and sporting positive attitudes, the made my day that much better. It is sometimes a wait, but I promise you the ends justifies the means. I ordered the Philly Steak Omelet with a side of bacon and what they do to this food is no less than perfection. Beware of the portions, the Omelet was hefty, but every bite was better than the last and the bacon was thick and crispy, just like I like it. I came here before heading back to Sacramento after a work trip. My order was rather simple- Bacon, Over Med Eggs, Country Potatoes, and Pancakes. The Bacon portion was huge. Three huge-thick cut strips. The eggs were cooked perfect. I wasn't a fan of the country potatoes as they appeared to be a frozen product. The pancakes were simple, and great. Our server was attentive and polite. Overall- an excellent breakfast experience. This is a place I will return to again before an early flight from Portland. read more

Headed here because of Yelp reviews on our trip from Portland back home. Busy place! We waited quite a while to be seated but were aware of the wait so it wasn't a big deal. We had the option to go elsewhere! Once seated the service was excellent despite how busy they were. I ordered the "Giant" taco omelet....it was! I seldom leave with a to go box but took about 1/2 home with me. Did i mention it was great? Girlfriend ordered the Spicy Southwest Skillet with peppered chicken and the cinnamon french toast. . Different story here, hence the 3 stars. Skillet arrived luke warm and hardly noticeable spice. Chicken was bland. The cinnamon french toast appeared to just have some cinnamon sprinkled on top. Not really appealing to either of us. Anyway, we make this trip several times a year. Everything we saw come out looked good so we'll probably chalk up the bad portion to a one off issue and stop in again on another trip to give a second try. Oh, again, service was great! read more
