I was not expecting to be absolutely blown away by this place, but I was. I came around lunch time on a weekday, and the entire time I was there, there was a constant line at the register. I got half of the kale caesar salad (which was MASSIVE...honestly this could've been a meal in and of itself) and the vegetable tartine. Both were incredibly delicious. The tartine came on perfectly toasted bread and had an amazing combination of textures and flavors. I'm still craving it. I tried a bite of a dessert that I forget the name of, but it was essentially a piece of cake covered in chocolate and coconut. Also delicious. The coffee's good too, AND they have almond milk. Absolutely in love with their seasonal salad, I feel like I could eat a trough of that easily lol. And I'm not one of those health nuts that only eats salad, but it's so flavorful and hearty it would satisfy any palate. It's a wonderful lunch option when you want a filling meal, that's healthy, and not too pricey. Always fresh and comes with a whole wheat roll that does not disappoint. They're also always good about making sure to keep my husband's salad tree-nut free due to his allergy. Before COVID, I loved eating in their little seating area, the vibes were always peaceful and chill. And I love that they sell Appalachia press prints too! I don't know if Roanoke is simply doesn't have a strong culinary scene but I am not having good experiences in this town. The only place that has been satisfactory is Our Daily Bread. I actually wanted to go there today for brunch but the line was out the door so I found Bread Craft on yelp. 4 stars, the people's opinion usually never fails me, unless apparently you are in Roanoke. During Saturday brunch at peak hours the like to order wasn't long and there were plenty of seats in the restaurant. It's quick service and in line you can see tons of baked goods on the left. My buddy got some type of blackberry square pastry that was the highlight of the whole meal. Everything else took an abnormal time to get and was not great quality. I had croissant French toast which was burnt. My friend has croissant French toast which had so much egg on it that you can see a big piece of egg on the corner of the toast in the photo. The bacon was fine but nothing spectacular. My other buddy got chorizo with a potato hash. He complained that the potatoes weren't seasoned and the skins being left gave them a weird texture as they were tough and papery. There was also a hair on one of the potatoes. Had another guy that got a brownie which he rated highly. Espresso didn't seem high quality based on the opinion of my friend who was a barista for a while. Wasn't a cheap meal and it wasn't worth the money. Not to mention to took too long to get the food. Maybe this place had an off day but I was just a tourist for the weekend so they'll never have an opportunity to give it another shot. Based on a comment of this review I would like the point out that my judgment of Roanoke's culinary scene is based on 4 dining experiences not simply one place. Judging a community's food scene based on one restaurant would indeed be unfair. However over The weekend I ate at 5 different establishments and one was up to par. Travel to D.C., Charleston, SC, LA, NYC and you will understand the major gap in culinary expertise compared to Roanoke. Perhaps on my next trip I'll find better results but every place I dined at was rated 4 stars and none of the establishments were close to 4 stars except Our Daily Bread. Walking into this quaint, nicely lit restaurant is inviting. Their menu consists of breakfast foods (quiches, avocado toast, and the like) until noon and lunch (hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soup) until 5. They also offer baked treats and a pizza special each day. Everything is reasonably priced - all meals under 10$. Sides are 2-3$. After ordering up front, you take a number, and sit at a table until your meal is brought over. For our table of 4, it took no more than 10 minutes of waiting for our food once we sat down. The presentation of the salads and French onion soup were enough to make us all salivate. My smoked salmon was wonderfully portioned and satisfying- just a tad dry.. a little more of the herbed mayo would have helped. Everyone was pleased with the taste, quality, and value of the food. I made sure to purchase a loaf of one of their freshly baked and rotating bread loaves for home- the Mediterranean olive for 4.75$. I would happily return. read more

The pastries alone make it worth a visit. Before my first visit here, I'd never had, and never have I since had, a chocolate croissant that compares to the ones here. I think their brunch and lunch menus are hit or miss on aggregate, but as long as you get one of the good things, it'll blow you away and certainly live up to the price. With that in mind, I'd recommend the French Toast on weekends or the prosciutto sandwich on weekdays. The French toast is probably the best breakfast dish I've ever had out and is definitely the best French toast I've ever had. My girlfriend swears by the Eggs Florentine. I'd avoid breakfast here on weekdays; the menu is limited and not really worth the price unless you're just buying a pastry. The good stuff on the menu gives this place 4 stars in my book, and the really helpful and friendly staff puts it up to 5. I've never had a problem with them and they've always brightened my day. Stick with your gut when ordering; if it sounds overly complicated or like an odd combination, it probably is. I think that the simpler stuff and the pastries here are your best bet. If you stick to that, you probably won't be disappointed. read more

Love the chocolate croissant, have to come early in the day or they run out. Cinnamon rolls are great too. Would not recommend any espresso drinks, pretty sure they use an automated thing. This is as good as it gets. Artisan bread, croissants piled high from pain au chocolate to ham & cheese tarts; eggs florentine hot and perfectly cooked...I recommend any of their skillets! Today I got the kale panzanella. This salad is a cut above. Perfectly balanced tomato vinaigrette over raw fresh kale, sweet tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Normally I skip croutons because they're vile and not worth the carbs. Not these. Their own bread lightly shredded and toasted, absorbing tomato dressing and still delivering an interior crunchy chew. French press coffee? Yes please. We only roll through here once a year because we live in Massachusetts. This is worth the road trip pit stop. As good as any bakery I've been to in Boston, New York or Vt. Stopped by for breakfast driving through Roanoke home to DC and this local cafe and bakery delivered one of the best breakfast croissants I've ever had. My bf inhaled his in 3 mins. I don't recall any in Paris being this memorable honestly. Bread Craft is not only good at what they do, but they are passionate about it. The small details like the paper/parchment packaging do not go unnoticed and are very appreciated. The iced latte and fresh chocolate pecan cookie were equally delicious. Good desserts however be warned if you have a latex allergy that they often use latex gloves when picking up the pastries. I emailed once and tried to call it to their attention but didn't get a reply. Asked once there and was told they weren't supposed to be using latex gloves up front but they were. The coffee is the best I have found in town, thankfully they offer my beloved almond milk lattes. Service has been top notch on both visits. Everytime I stop by Bread Craft, I end up leaving with more than I came for! Their salads are amazing. The half size is more than enough for lunch. I always get the truffle bacon salad with a side of the herb vinaigrette from the seasonal salad. The chocolate croissants are my favorite but have also fallen in love with the spinach croissant when I'm wanting something more savory. Great authentic french baguette! I stopped in here with a baker who knows her stuff. Glad I did. I got a nice crusty baguette which could've been straight out of a Parisian bakery. IMHO, Bread Craft is the highest quality food of any type in the greater Roanoke area. The pastries are absolutely fantastic, and Alex introduces new varieties from time to time to keep things interesting. The new chocolate-covered cream-filled croissants are to die for. Speaking of croissants, Bread Craft's are the flakiest, butteriest ones I've had anywhere outside of Paris. Breakfast and lunch dishes are always delicious, with the best and freshest ingredients. I have been here probably a dozen times since May of 2017. I really cannot rave enough about this place. Their bread and pastries are on point, amazing brioche and sourdough, their cinnamon rolls a perfect combination of soft and sweet without being "OMG my teeth hurt" sweet. Their croissants are the best I have ever had, and I have had them from a great number of places. The french onion soup is fantastic and their kale salad super tasty. You really should not leave without a jammy bar in tow. My next things to try will be the bread pudding and scones. If you live in Roanoke and have not visited... you are missing out. read more

I also got the prosciutto baguette and there was a lot of prosciutto on there (although I would probably go for something else that was seasonal next time based on how great that veggie sandwich was). The French toast had that perfect crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside consistency and was closer to a fluffy croissant pastry than any lame bread creation I've made at home! Yummm. I've been here for both brunch and lunch, and I haven't been disappointed for either meal. For breakfast: The latte was wonderful. The French toast I had was made with croissant bread. Brilliant. I can't believe I never thought of doing that! Delicious. For lunch, I ordered the kale salad because I wanted to be healthy that day, I guess. I don't like kale. I was seriously impressed that they could make something so bland into a delicious lunch. I've ordered it again since. Also, the French onion soup is truly delicious.
