The best bread in Roanoke but don't forget their scrumptious shortbread, croissants, sticky buns, etc. During Covid they largely shut down their made to order menu-- items like salads, sandwiches and pizza which were also excellent. I was staying at my friend's apartment who's a big foodie, and this is one of her favorite places to eat in Salem, which is saying a lot. She would recommend the chicken biscuits which are specifically served on the weekends. I was inclined to order the Egg Florentine the first time, and I never looked back. The Egg Florentine was seasoned beautifully--a little salty, but when you balanced it with their perfect bread, wow. Definitely one of my favorite breakfasts of all time. Once, they accidentally served me Chorizo & Eggs Cocotte, and I didn't realize until I opened the container and was eating it at the apartment. It was like the same style as the Egg Florentine and delicious in its own right, but for me, it had nothing on the Egg Florentine. I'd also sometimes order the Turkey Florentine (but substitute the turkey with ham) to have for lunch later that day. I didn't find it to be worth the price; it felt like a regular sandwich, but that might've been because I wasn't having it fresh. Nonetheless, come here for the Egg Florentine! I came here as frequently as I financially could during my stay in Salem just for the Egg Florentine. read more

This place is amazing! It is so clean, has plenty of seating, including a large back room if you are in a group. The staff is friendly and helpful. I already had my morning coffee, but they offer specialty coffee drinks or plain coffee as well. We came here to try the breakfast items. I had the poached eggs with chorizo. It was the best chorizo dish I ever had. The eggs were poached just right and the chorizo casserole that they sat on were seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of spice and heat. My daughter had poached eggs on creamy and cheesy kale with prosciutto. She loved it and said it was the best! We also tried the chocolate croissant and a coconut croissant. Both were so good. All pastries are made daily. I was also told all eggs and milk products come from close local farms. You can tell everything is so fresh. There are many other items I would like to try. I highly recommend this bakery and would make a special effort to stop in the next time I'm in Roanoke. read more

Best breakfast in Roanoke, by far. I stay in downtown Roanoke maybe six nights a month, sometimes more. This gives me the great opportunity to taste the local tables and hang out in all the downtown clubs. For breakfast, I always try to make time for one per trip at Bread Craft. Time slows down in Bread Craft. Do not waste it trying to eat a fast meal. If you're in a hurry then get a coffee and meal to go. Otherwise enjoy the experience and give yourself at least 45 minutes to hang out. The setting is neo early 1900s and you can enjoy listening to folky bluegrass music played quietly enough to think or bar a conversation. My go to breakfast is a cappuccino and their Chorizo & Eggs Cocotte. This is a soufflé dish served with two eggs poached , chorizo sausage and a chèvre cheese. Sliced baguette is used to assist eating the spicy sauce. Oh my, foodgasim. They are a bakery so of course there are plenty of confections available for the people who can eat such. They look awesome but alas I can't (sigh). Bread Craft draws a friendly crowd and host an excellent staff. Come here for breakfast, lunch, for coffee or a sweet bread. Ladies lunchtime and lunch was a bust....(We should've turned around when we kept hearing all the different ingredients they were out of.) I ordered the BC Turkey which sounded amazing but when I got it it was literally in a tiny plastic box similar to the container gas station sandwiches are packed in. (No side either) The sandwich was between thin slices of bread and was dry, 2 small bacon pieces were overcooked and there was very few pieces of crumbled turkey. Tasted and looked prepackaged. Definitely NOT worth the $11 I paid!! Also ordered was the bacon & egg salad which used to be a favorite! Bread piece no longer had the delicious spread and the salad tasted like old egg with no seasoning whatsoever. We spoke to the owner but she did nothing but offer us more dressing... Pickled cucumbers were okay but very salty! Hot ham & cheese was the last item ordered - ingredients on the inside were good but bread was burnt (served with the burnt sized facing down so we didn't see it until eating!) Luckily we were hungry so sandwiches were ate but the salad and cucumbers were tossed in the trash...we will not return and recommend Panera over this place which used to be favorite. So sad to see local businesses lacking in the quality we're used to receiving. read more

By 1030 on Saturday morning they were out of most pastries. Waited for 20 minutes, The food was okay, but the avocado toast was very thin and had mayyyybe 1/4 of an avocado on the piece. Very small portions left hungry, way overpriced. The best thing we got was the chocolate croissant, thank goodness they had 1 left. read more

Sometimes I struggle between four and five stars, but in this case it is an absolute five star! This is one of the top bakeries I've been to in a couple of years, I've only had as good in NYC. We stopped in on a Friday morning on our way to Washington DC from Hendersonville, North Carolina. I had some questions and emailed, and Alex got back to me immediately. They had a great selection and we did the peach cobbler croissant, a slice of the pizza, and an almond croissant. Just so impressed with the quality of their baked goods! This is more like, 4.5 stars. So much about Bread Craft makes my wife and me happy. The ambience is peaceful and relaxing. We find the décor style to very much match our 'modern farmhouse' sensibilities. From there, it only gets better! The customer service is superb; very genuine and friendly every single time. Normally the line isn't too long, we tend to go late morning, and typically moves quickly even when it is. And the food? Delicious! So fresh, tasty, well made. Our favorite is perhaps the biscuit chicken sandwich, although today's fruit scones were yummy. Sadly the coffee maker was broken, but usually we get that too! My only lack of a 5 star review is that baked goods can sell out quickly, which is a disappointment. Still, we consider ourselves semi-regulars and will be for the entire foreseeable future. read more

I love BreadCraft! Their breads are super good and so are their pastries. My favorites are the almond croissants and the eclairs. The almond croissant is light and flakey and just the right amount of sweet. The pastry cream in the eclairs are made with real vanilla bean and you can see the dots of the vanilla in the cream. It is light and sweet, but will not make you feel guilty after eating it. Their little bagels are good too! Highly recommend! read more

This is my second review of Breadcraft , because it deserves ten stars and maybe two five will send the message !? We travel often to SC and Roanoke is our stopover for the night. We like to leave early in the morning for the continued drive but we delay until Breadcraft opens . We get our breakfast there and then lunch to go . SO WORTH IT !!!! And now ... the restrooms . So freaking clean I feel I could eat in there . You can tell a lot about a place by the restrooms , right ? If it's nasty in there , envision the kitchen . They have decent stuff, but not consistent. Some days there will be baked stuff burnt or over baked. It is nice to have things with variety, but that distracts from the flavor. It is okay, but not some place to seek out unless they have something particular. I had a quiche that had a burnt crust and a crossaint that was also burnt. They do not have good coffee and the extra seating room is weird. The granola cookie is good, but not for a vegetarian, we were told they use lard. The staff seemed it a bother they were taking an order. If already in downtown it is convenient, but the parking is not the easiest. This is a small neighborhood cafe with amazing pastries and several savory choices for breakfast. We had a tiramisu croissant and blueberry scone - both were delicious. Went to Bread Craft for lunch today, arrived around 12:35-12:40. I was informed that a couple of options on the menu were unavailable, so I placed an order for a sandwich, which I paid for immediately, and added a tip. When I sat down, the staff started cleaning, so the space smelled more like cleaning chemicals than food. My main issue, however, is regarding the service. As I waited for my sandwich, other customers came in, and I noticed their orders were getting filled before mine, some of whom ordered the same thing I ordered. One lady (who came in after me) received her order (a sandwich like mine), but she didn't like it, so she sent it back and requested something else. Her replacement came, and I still hadn't received mine, so I asked for a refund after waiting for about 20-25 minutes total. The reason for the 2nd star is the refund was granted immediately. Unfortunately, this is the only positive point. It was like the staff simply didn't care whether I stayed or left either happy or dissatisfied. Bread Craft has gone downhill over the years, both quality of product and service. Today was my last visit. read more

Tried a bite of the spinach salad and it was all fresh and delicious. The half portion was huge! Also had the almond coconut croissant and was just as good as everything else we sampled. Stopped in on the weekend for a late breakfast. Great ambiance with lots of space. Menu was limited but several great options. We had eggs Benedict, eggs Florentine and apple maple French toast. All were exceptional!!! The French toast was crispy on the outside and moist/tender inside. Maple syrup was fantastic. The bacon was extra crispy which we loved. Best breakfast we had on our road trip vacation. I ordered the lemon buttercream square, a latte and an avocado toast with a poached egg. My boyfriend got an americano and the open faced salmon sandwich. The open face sandwich had a thick piece of salmon and is a great take on a lox bagel. The lemon buttercream square was very light and I like it so much I had to get a second. The atmosphere is welcoming but sophisticated. Seriously, this place was amazing. Exposed brick interior. A simple decor that gave the place a lot of life. Super friendly people working. Delicious food to stare out while you order. Even better when you got to eat some of it. I had the open faced smoke salmon sandwich and it was the best. I didn't take the best picture because I was hungry but the dish was great. My friend had the chorizo skillet and thought it was amazing. We got the beignets for his son and he demolished them. I typically love Bread Craft, but I can't say I was happy today. This morning I stopped to get a croissant and saw the turkey sandwiches to go so I grabbed one for lunch as well. From the outside, it looked great. It was only once I opened it that I realized they used the "butt" of the bread to make my sandwich. The menu and food in this restaurant are superb. The breads are really excellent! The ambience is lovely and creative. And if we're in Roanoke again, we would definitely come back. That said, the day we were there, they were shortstaffed and had a new server who was very green, trying to keep up with everything. I was served the wrong meal, and the croissant I ordered was gone by the time my plate was brought to me. It had, in fact, been sitting in the case along with others when I ordered it. So, many people who came in and got in line after me then walked out with takeout got the croissant I ordered. We rolled with it. We were offered a refund on the wrong meal and the right meal eventually was served, but there was quite a kerfuffle about whether they even had the right meal back in the kitchen by the time they were ready to replace the wrong one. It took several trips to the counter to get this sorted out. To make matters worse, they were completely out of coffee when we arrived around 10:30 in the morning. We were offered an Americano, but what we were served in large cups was too watered down. Although a refund was offered, none was given, nor did we go and demand it. I felt sorry for them to be so overwhelmed and when we left there were still people coming through the door who surely were going to be disappointed because the shelves were empty of baked goods. 10/10 worst smoked salmon I have ever had. Not only was the salmon not smoked, rather it was a disgustingly thick cold slab of what looked like baked salmon, it was so covered in salt I found it inedible. I took three bites to see if perhaps the lid on the salt had popped off on only one section, but that was not the case- each bite was worse than the last. It actually tasted like the tomatoes and bread had also been salted, just in case my blood pressure wasn't high enough already. Good thing it was only $10! REPULSIVE. In addition, after I purchased a mug for coffee I realized there was only one roast available and it was dark- which I thought should have been mentioned beforehand.Too bad because the place itself looked cute! read more

Beautiful cafe/bakery in the heart of Roanoke. Love the chairs. It seems a bit bare, but with a few additions, it could be very cozy and warm. I had the best croissant in my life here - very flaky crispy crust and a tender but not doughy or mushy inside. One was filled with chocolate and raspberry, which may not always be available. The other was filled with spinach and feta cheeses - much like spanakopita, and was also excellent. There were a variety of breads that looked tempting. The atmosphere and decor was upscale casual, with brick walls, wall art, and marble tables. Staff were super friendly and helpful. They looked like they enjoyed working there!
