We stayed in Roanoke for the month of October and tried a lot of restaurants while we were there. Scrambled became our favorite breakfast spot. The service was great every single time. We were always greeted warmly and genuinely felt welcome, not just like customers passing through. The food was consistently great and the French toast was the best. Portions are the perfect size. On our last visit, we wanted to buy their WTFT ("What the French Toast") t-shirts, but they didn't have our sizes in stock. The owner took down our information and later shipped two shirts to us to our home in California, complete with a personal note. Truly above and beyond. read more

Located at one of the most prime locations of Roanoke's City Market Square in one of the corners of the Historic City Market Building, with a beautiful view of the heart of Downtown Roanoke, this breakfast restaurant is open daily from seven o'clock in the early morning until two o'clock in the afternoon, except Sundays that they open at eight o'clock, and they're closed on Mondays. Last time I visited this restaurant and wrote a review I found it simply amazing: its decor, its ambiance, its food, and most important of all, its excellent customer service by its friendly and very efficient servers. I invite you to read that review and view my photographs accompanying it to get a better sense of my experience here, then. However, this time around, it wasn't so good. And I judge restaurants by their consistency of quality of food and service. This time, the ambiance was nice and the service was excellent by a friendly young lady server, but the quality of the food left much to be desired, especially the way it was cooked. The cook was a total disappointment. I was one of the first ones there when they opened their doors. When I entered, a group of friendly and eager to serve servers who where gathered around chatting, waiting for their customers to arrive, greeted me and gave me a warm welcome, and invited me to take the table of my choice. Soon after I was seated, my server, a friendly young lady came by and took my order. I asked for orange juice and coffee to drink, as well as a glass of iced water. And to eat I asked for the dish that I so much enjoyed and was looking forward to having today: the Steak & Eggs. I ordered a five ounce filet cooked medium rare with two fried eggs cooked over easy, served with homefries as my choice of side, and for bread: white Texas toast. While I waited for my food to come out, I enjoyed drinking my orange juice and coffee, looked over the menu, and looked out the window where I saw in the distance, Ernie's, one of my favorite breakfast restaurants, for its consistency of quality food and service, and relaxing environment. When my server brings my food, the first thing I noticed was my flat filet cut. Usually this cut is for customers who like their steak well done. Last time, my filet was a thick cut one, cooked medium-rare to perfection. Then I saw the fried eggs. They weren't over easy, but over cooked as well. And the toast was over-toasted and laid there while the food was cooking, because it was luckwarm and hard by the time it got to me. When I cut my steak with the steak knife to see if it was pink inside, it was not. It was tough and dry. When my servers. I signaled one of servers asking for my server and tell her about my steak. She replied that now they were using a different meat provider, but that she would take it back and ask for another to be cooked. She only takes the steak back. Shen then brings me another back that not only had a weird shape, but was rare and with gristle. Judging by the quality of the second steak, the cook didn't intend to make amends, or maybe didn't know better. It's a pity because everything else about this restaurant is comforting, but when the food isn't, it takes away the desire to return. I hope the management and the owner of the restaurant read this review and take the necessary steps to correct the misdoing. From the moment we walked in, just an absolutely warm and welcoming staff! They made accommodation for our space, because we needed a lot of room, and then food came out so quickly it was amazingly ridiculous. Everything we ate was delicious, from the Mediterranean scramble to the sausage and biscuit gravy, and the French toast,...do not miss the French toast! The mimosa had both a bit of orange juice and pomegranate syrup that made it absolutely delectable because all of the bubbles still came through so nicely, and they refilled our coffee like their lives depended on it. Instead of taking responsibility for the employee's actions like leaving a dog bowl on the counter and for the high prices of subpar food, I was sarcastically advised to "go to IHOP if I wanted gourmet food." Rather than owning up to poor service and mediocre food, the owner chose to make excuses. If there had been an IHOP nearby, believe me I would've gladly gone. Loved this spot for brunch!! I am visiting a friend in Roanoke and we grabbed brunch here yesterday. It is definitely a cute diner feel, with some more interesting options than your typical diner. I had a half order of their vanilla French toast and a side of apple cider bacon. The French toast amazing!! It had awesome flavor and a hint of cinnamon. So so yummy! A half order is three pieces, so definitely enough for a meal. The bacon was also great. Pro tip: dip it in the maple syrup! The pomegranate mimosa was awesome as well. There's something about Sunday mornings that make you want breakfast/brunch. And it is no different when you are on vacation. So before ending our trip to Roanoke to head home, I wanted to get some breakfast at this charming spot in the Downtown area attached to the historic City Marketing building. Clearly I wasn't the only one with the idea as it had quite a crowd waiting for tables. We liked our chances as a party of two and were luckily sat in about 20 minutes at the counter/small high top table seating inside. They do have a nice enclosed garden patio, which would of been great for the weather, but the wait for this area I'm sure was much longer. A simple menu where eggs clearly are the star with scrambles, egg combos, and sandwiches. They do have pancakes and French toast if eggs just aren't your thing. My husband got the Market Executive Sandwich (Hard fried egg on texas toast with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and mayo). This is served with choice of side and he went for grits. The sandwich was a little sad looking. I know a BLT is simple food, but iceberg lettuce just doesn't add anything. The bread was nicely toasted but felt like more bread than any of the other ingredients. As the eggs were over hard, you don't even get the runny yoke goodness. The sandwich was fine, but think it could use some upgrades. The grits were tasty though. I went balls to the wall and ordered the Star City Skillet. You basically get to build your own skillet. The base can be home fries or grits with cheddar cheese, sausage gravy, your choice of meat, and topped with two eggs cooked to order. You also get your choice of bread. I am a sucker for sausage gravy so that's a given in my breakfast selections and felt this dish also let me try almost everything else. I did fries for the base, turkey sausage patties for meat, eggs over easy, and a biscuit for my bread. This skillet was delicious. I clearly won this meal as my husband kept going for bites. A photo doesn't do it much justice as there's so many flavorful layers beneath. Very heavy and filling, but I saw worth it. We had good service and we got a nice inside look at the staff due to our seat. It was nice seeing the boss interact so sweetly with his servers/team while he handled making all the mimosa and other brunch cocktails. Could tell they support each other and that just made the meal more enjoyable. I can see why this place is a hot spot in the area. It's probably best for my waistline I was visiting and can't be temped by that skillet often! read more

One of many restaurants in the marketplace area of Downtown Roanoke, I chose this restaurant over others to try because their menu was straightforward and it was walking distance from my husband's work. I came here solo on a Tuesday morning a little before lunch time. It wasn't super busy but definitely not empty. I was greeted pretty quickly and told to sit wherever I wanted. I opted for a window seat to people watch while I enjoyed breakfast. Service was friendly and efficient. I ordered fresh orange juice and the Southern scramble with a side of home fries. The food came out quick and fresh, very flavorful, home fries were nice and crispy, eggs were scrambled perfectly. Ordering just the scramble with one side was a good amount of food without being too filling, definitely joined the clean plate club. I also ordered takeout for my husband near the end of my meal which he thoroughly enjoyed. It came out fresh and hot just as I was ready to pay the bill and stayed hot for the 15 minute walk to his work. He had the 2 egg combo over easy with biscuits & sausage gravy and a side of grits with cheese. At Scrambled, you can just walk in and seat yourself - so we found a table and were quickly given menus. On the table, butter, jelly, cream, and sugar is provided to you. The restaurant was quite busy, so we got to take our time deciding on what to eat while our waitress poured numerous cups of coffee and jotted down other patron's orders. Once she swung back around, I went with a double stack of blueberry pancakes, a biscuit, and home fries. My boyfriend got the ham sliders, home fries, and a Southwestern omelet. And his sister got scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, and french toast. The food originally came out pretty quickly, but a mishap occurred that the staff opted to fix. Somehow syrup and salsa got spilled on a lot of the food from the sauce cups they were giving us. So they quickly remade a couple items before them to us. We appreciated that gesture. When I got my pancakes, I was surprised - they are humungous!!! They barely fit on the plate. They were chock full of fresh blueberries. Thank goodness I didn't get the triple stack... I was only able to finish one, and my boyfriend helped with the rest. I probably could've used more syrup, but our waitress was quite busy. The home fries were crispy and delicious, I added some more salt and pepper for flavor. The biscuit was yummy too, definitely homemade! I put a hearty amount of strawberry jelly and butter on it and it was perfect. My boyfriend and his sister thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well - our plates were clean in the end. I'm glad this breakfast cafe was recommended to us - that hearty breakfast kept us going for the entire day!! This is such a sweet brunch spot and was definitely worth the 20~ wait after giving your name. Everyone working could not have been nicer and you could feel a sense of camaraderie among everyone. Very manageable menu but there is something tasty for everyone. It had a base of perfectly cooked grits topped with scrambled eggs, sausage, sausage gravy and cheese. Holy smokes it was decadent and heavy but oh-so-good! I didn't even know I liked sausage gravy until I ordered the Star City Scramble. I always like a little sweet with my breakfast so I was quite pleased that I could substitute my side of bread with a buttermilk pancake. I love places where I can easily get a sweet and savory breakfast. On a chilly fall morning we both enjoyed the coffee too. Scrambled is located on the end of the historical City Market Building. Several options for breakfast/brunch in downtown Roanoke which is a short walk from the Hotel Roanoke via a covered bridge over the train tracks (btw, they need some ventilation in that bridge during the summer months as it is like a stuffy greenhouse so beware if you have health issues). With all the great reviews we decide on Scrambled....and...yeah disappointing. The service was fine as everyone is friendly and efficient. The prices are reasonable. What was disappointing was the food...ordered the Star City Scramble with a Denver scramble, home fries, ham, and a pancake. The scramble had barely any veggies or ham...the hash browns are frozen diced chunks of potatoes that you buy from the grocery store...the pancakes are ok but not as fluffy as the best we've had. So yeah, not horrible by any means but mediocre all the way around. I'd take a closer look at other nearby options. And one last note, after a Friday night the street outside could have used some cleaning and I believe that led to numerous flies buzzing all over us on the patio. I realize it's hard to control that for the restaurant but if you are bothered by flies landing on you I recommend sitting inside. read more

I got the star city scrambled. Came with two eggs to order, choice of meat and a side with either 1/2 French toast or pancake. Very good and flavorful! My husband got the same but with bacon. Basin was very chewy like jerky.. glad I didn't get it. Home fries came out cold and stale.. daughter didn't care because she likes fries anyways.
