This is a very nice looking house which has abundant free parking and plenty of indoor and outdoor space if you want to sit around, which I did not do on my initial visit but would certainly like to. Food options were limited, but my parfait, which came out of the refrigerator with blueberries but received an extra helping of strawberries at the counter, did provide me with the sustenance I needed. Their chai was syrupy and heavy on cinnamon. Tasty but nothing special. Four stars for the fare and a fifth for ambiance, as far as I'm concerned. read more

In the heart of the Historic Old Southwest neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia, there is a beautiful Old Victorian house that has been converted to a lovely little quaint Coffee Shop named Sweet Donkey Coffee. This morning I went to visit it as soon as it opened at 6:00am. It was still dark outside when I arrived and extremely cold outside, but the old mansion converted to Sweet Donkey Coffee looked very majestic surrounded by bright light bulbs all around. When I entered the red brick building, I found that the renovation had turned out amazingly extraordinary. The original well polished hardwood floors gave character to the place that was painted with dark tone blue paint and the walls full of modern oil paintings all around. The furniture were simple yet elegant and the white framed windows gave it an air of distinction. And what amazed me most is that at that early time of the morning the Coffee Shop was full of customers all around. There where two ladies who seemed like good friends seated in a table next to a window. An older man drinking coffee and reading something from his cellphone. A young man was seated in a small table with his laptop taking advantage of the Free Wi-Fi. A lady who seemed like a loyal customer was at another table who when she found out it was my first time there, she spoke highly of the place to me and in particular about their wonderful Waffles, one of which she was eating and allowed me to photograph to include with this review. The coffee and food station was behind a wonderfully designed counter surrounded with bakery items to accompany your cup of coffee or tea. A young woman behind the counter greeted me with a warm and friendly smile. I ordered a House Made Breakfast Sandwich, with a White Chocolate Raspberry Muffin made in the house, and to drink a large Cafe Mocha. When I paid with my credit card I joined their Club and earned a point. Then I took my order to a small table next to their Christmas Tree. Everything tasted amazingly good. From the Cafe Mocha that had a beautiful design on top, to the breakfast sandwich that was heated with a pressed iron toaster, to the Muffin that was so soft and fresh. As I was eating other customers arrived and put in their orders and waited to be called to pick the orders up. A father and son picked their order and sat in a table on the other side of the Christmas Tree. Other friend couples and single customers ordered and sat down. You would never imagine it was so early in the morning but the incredible atmosphere of the place attracted people of all ages, family and friends, to share quality time there, drinking a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, accompanied by a fresh bakery items. What a wonderful place. I highly recommend this place to all. Come by yourself or with family and friends. You will feel so comfortable surrounded by this beautiful renovated historic house, and welcomed by the friendly baristas behind the counter. Once you come here once, you immediately would want to return. read more

Personally love this place when warm out, as they have an abundance of picnic tables and sofas outside, & also a place in which they hold many concerts for locals and neighbors! We are here for our daughter's NCAA volleyball championship D3 tournament. We went to sweet donkey the first day and it's been our go to for the last 5 mornings Their coffee drinks are so good! I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this spot. It is an absolute favorite for coffee in Roanoke when I am in town. I've been here probably 5x since discovering it in October 2021! Their coffee is delicious and they always have some featured special house-made syrups in line with the holidays and time of year (think pumpkin, peppermint, etc.). I absolutely love their house-made yogurt parfait, it's to die for. The yogurt is sweet but not too sweet and they top it with house-made granola and fresh fruit (usually strawberry and blueberry) and I drizzle honey and cinnamon on top, noms! Their lattes are good - my staple is the soy latte with no syrup, iced. It's perfect every time. They also have a variety of fresh-baked goodies every day like cinnamon rolls, scones, muffins, cakes, and quiche. The quiche of the day is usually very good and the scone is always on point. I love the vibe inside as this is an old home converted nicely into a coffee shop with plenty of seating both indoors and outside on the covered porch and patio around the side or on the open air patio out front. Parking can be a challenge, the driveway is narrow and steep with a few spots at the top, but ample street parking alongside the yard or in the adjoining neighborhoods mean you should be able to easily find some nearby. Great spot with friendly staff and excellent coffee and food. It is my favorite coffee in all of Roanoke and I drink coffee constantly. read more

Looking around for places to go and see and happened upon this location. I had to go just because of the name. The place has 2 floors and fireplaces. We went in for tea because my friend felt a little under the weather. I took my own lemon in and they cut it for me and put honey in the tea. I had a latte, which was delightful. Such a fun place! This coffee shop is a house with multiple levels. There is ample outdoor seating on the front patio and covered porch. When you walk in there are many two top tables in two separate rooms. There is also a shelf full of board games to play while you enjoy your drinks and breakfast. There was a sign that said there was also seating upstairs, although we didn't go up to see for ourselves. Hubby got the pumpkin spiced latte and I got the spiced apples cider. Both were delicious and exactly what we were looking for - although we saw the smoked maple chipotle coffee flavor after we were all done and hubby was disappointed he didn't get that instead. Our boys ordered the chocolate croissant and pumpkin chocolate chip muffin with the muffin being their favorite. Hubby and I tried both and agreed the muffin was the better choice. While the croissant was okay, it wasn't anything we'd want to eat again. To me, the muffin tasted like a chocolate chip muffin with a hint of pumpkin. If you're looking for a strong pumpkin flavor, this muffin isn't going to do it. I also got the quiche which was packed with mushroom flavor and big pieces of mushroom with a flaky buttery crust. I love mushrooms, so this was a win for me. Our boys also spotted the rack of comics and we purchased three as we were leaving. The two girls working were very friendly and helpful. This place comes highly recommended through the countless online reviews so of course as visitors from Philadelphia, friends and I had to check it out. We weren't disappointed with its location. It's right on the street corner inside a beautiful old home with PLENTY of outdoor seating. Street parking is also plentiful, and they also have a parking lot in the back. Step inside and you'll be excited by how beautiful it is. We visited during the pandemic and the chairs and tables were up, but when they're allowed to have full capacity again, Will be plenty of seats to choose from. They really took advantage of the home setting and made it feel very welcoming. The customer service is great and the coffee is decent. I ordered a black coffee and we sat outside at the picnic tables. Overall is a very enjoyable experience. They only get four stars because their coffee is so overpriced. No doubt they are taking advantage of their popularity with tourists. Later on in the trip we stopped by Mill Mountain Coffee in downtown Roanoke and were just as happy if not more so because their coffee is so much cheaper. Sweet Donkey is a charming coffee shop with a clean, spacious layout, friendly staff, well made espresso, and varied well made snacks. I ordered a Cortado and a small piece of shortbread, both of which were delicious. My companion's Americano was well brewed, fresh, and very appetizing. They serve a variety of soups, sandwiches, and other breakfast and lunch items which looked well made and reasonably priced. I appreciate that Sweet Donkey has plenty of seating options: classic wooden tables and chairs for studying, plus sized padded chairs by the window for lounging, outdoor picnic tables for group gathering, and lots of Adirondack chairs spread across the lawn and in a cozy shaded grove behind the shop. Most of these have a nice view of the rolling hills outside of Roanoke. I didn't explore the seating upstairs but expect those would be just as nice. I will definitely come back to Sweet Donkey and encourage others to check it out for a classic coffee shop experience. read more
