It saddens me to leave a negative review about Our Daily Bread, but my most recent experience was…read morevery disappointing. I have lived in Blacksburg my whole life and ODB has been a go-to bakery for most locals for a while. Serving a variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and offering lunch, brunch, and dinners. They have a lovely variety of options for customers to enjoy. The bakery primarily serves French pastries and caters to French cuisine at their meals. Although they offer more than just French inspired food. In the past, my family and I have enjoyed grabbing their cakes for celebrations and individual pastries from their pastries case. But recently, they have not been up to par and have left us very unsatisfied. The cakes have been dry and do not taste fresh at all. On my latest visit I tried a couple of things, all of which were cold, with dry, crumbly textures. It was evident to me that these pastries were not made day-of and had clearly sat in a fridge for at least one night (if not more). I found this to be extremely disappointing as ODB used to have a reputation of serving FRESH baked goods and pastries. I cannot attest for the hot food they serve during meal times, but the pastries and cakes have gone down hill. Over the winter break, I had their NY cheesecake bar (which I've gotten in the past and it was phenomenal) and it fell so short of what I remembered. It was lacking flavor and the crust at the bottom was dry. This past visit, I tried a Napoleon (also have had this before and really enjoyed it), a specialty cake, a scone, and a couple macarons and macaroons. The Napoleon was so cold and the puff pastry was super stale, it practically fell apart the second I tried to eat it. The specialty individual cake slice was also very cold and the cake wasn't moist at all. Again, indicating it was not fresh or made day-of. The scone was also a disappointment as it was dry and lacked any moisture. I thought the macrons and macaroons were fine though. While most of this was disappointing, the price didn't help either. Nothing was inexpensive and the quality was completely missing. So disappointing to leave this review as I used to enjoy coming here for sweet treats. It's sad to see that ODB is unfortunately not what it used to be. I will note that the service is very friendly and they do their best dealing with customers. Could have been more efficient, but I did go during a busier time. I hope they can turn things around, but until then I do not think I will be retuning soon.

The restaurant has cute, cheerful decor and an extensive menu with plenty of options. I went with the Southern staples- eggs, sausage, a biscuit with sausage gravy, and grits- and everything was very good. The coffee was excellent, too, which is always important at breakfast! Great food, welcoming service, and a bright, friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a good breakfast in Blacksburg!

We actually tried eating here a few months prior but the wait was nearly 2 hours long. This go around we had no wait. We were immediately sat and our drink orders were taken. Both my daughter and I chose apple juice. We also ordered a small appetizer b/c she was starving. The appetizer was yummy, can't remember what it was called but it was basically like doughnuts without the caramel it comes with. Our server was a young man and he did a fantastic job. He was very attentive to our table and our needs. The food was amazing, now I see why there was a 2 hour wait last time. I rarely eat other people's grits but these were pretty tasty and cooked just right. When I got my check I was in total shock though. Two apple juices (with no refills mind you) were approx. $5 a piece. WTF, why so expensive? I could have purchased a large jug of apple juice from Kroger. Yeah, I know I sound cheap. Nope, that the case just shocked at the price of a small glass of apple juice was with again no refills. We will definitely return next time I visit but we won't get apple juice again, we will stick to water.

With two kids in tow, we were worried there would be a wait, but thanks to summer break, we were seated quickly and all of the staff were super friendly and attentive. Holy moly, the eggs. I have no idea what magic they put into them (maybe butter?), but they were sooo flavorful! My kids (who are moderately picky, especially with their scrambled eggs) scarfed them down and asked me for a few bites of my omelette. The kids cleaned their plates (pancakes, egg, bacon) and so did my husband and I! I got a simple meat & cheese omelette (w sausage) and expected a pretty standard omelette - but those eggs, man. Those eggs! Hubs got western omelette with ham, and same. Go get Joe's eggs!! You won't regret it. Added bonus points for a deliciously fluffy biscuit and hot, yummy coffee!

Our plan was to grab a late…read morebreakfast, do a little shopping, tour Blacksburg to witness how much it's changed, then attend the basketball game. Joe's was a nice start to the day as they provide good food and good service within a tiny, but capable venue. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. Neal ate his entire meal, so it's safe to say we enjoyed our food. Joe's is an excellent diner with awesome food and service. I can't wait to dine there again when I return. Thank you, Joe's Diner! Several nearby booths were enjoying the Southern Ribs ($23 ): seven slow-cooked, then crispy-fried pork ribs in a BBQ sauce, served with pimento mac-n-cheese, cornbread, and vegetable du jour. In addition to the dinner entrées ($20-$32) and specials ($40), Lefty's has dinner sandwiches under $14 and dinner burgers under $15. Plus flatbread pizzas, $14. Wines by the glass from $8 to $10.50. 24 beers on tap. Cocktails are $9 to $11. This is notable given that the menu is mostly (if not entirely) vegetarian, which is not the norm for a Southern brunch but does not seem to preclude the locals from packing in. I stopped in early to beat the rush. They had a breakfast special that yielded a substantial bowl with quinoa, beans, herbed tofu, and a few other ingredients brought together by a zingy salsa. An orange juice was the right compliment for a high protein and fiber bowl which definitely started the day off right. Plenty of pancakes and toasts were available for those seeking more conventional brunch. The ambiance is a bit tired and the menu not as varied as I might hope, but I can certainly see why the locals view this as an easy spot to agree on.

We were seated downstairs in the bar area, which has the feel of a typical college bar. Apparently, there is also a quieter restaurant area upstairs with the same menu, which I probably would have preferred. Our server, Maddie, was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The menu sounded great, but unfortunately, the execution didn't live up to it. We started with the pork belly cornbread bites, which were just okay.I ordered the salmon entrée, and Maddie made a point of letting me know that the salmon is served medium rare. Perfect-I actually prefer my salmon rare to medium rare. Unfortunately, when the entrée arrived, the grilled asparagus and roasted golden beets were cold, and the salmon itself was barely warm. Everything actually tasted good, but the entire dish should have been served much hotter. I didn't complain or send it back, although in retrospect, I probably should have. My husband's picanha steak was overdone and chewy, so his entrée was disappointing as well. The service was good and the menu has a lot of promise, but both of our entrées had significant execution issues. Given how frequently 622 North is recommended, we were expecting much better.

This was fine for my needs, and indeed I like places with a narrow focus, but it might come as a surprise to some. The space was minimal. I was also a bit surprised that the cinnamon rolls their website promised didn't seem to be there, though a few other intriguing baked goods were on sale. Ultimately, I took some mouthwatering rosemary and sundried tomato bagels along with some plain ones for comparison, as well as a chocolate babka cake. The bagels had that bit of sourness that makes them worthwhile, and a nice bit of browning. The babka cake, which I worried would not have enough chocolate, delivered satisfaction on a per-bite basis. What I wanted out of my baked goods is pretty much what i got.
