My favorite is the French toast bagel. If you haven't tried it and you like French toast, you should try that bagel. It is awesome.

Overpriced bagel sandwiches. The place is cute and the food is fine. But I could do without the hefty price tag and side of religion.

Bagels were solid. Sandwiches were light on the egg which is normally what they overkill at Bacon Egg and Cheese with. Will stop by again.

Westlake Coffee and Cafe - Girlfriend's Turkey Caprese, very good too

Part 2 of 2 for W in alphabet series for W is for Westlake Coffee & Cafe. This breaks my current…read morealphabet series of places gone to with my girlfriend from the beginning of our relationship up to Easter 2025, but I had just reviewed Smith Mountain Lake Coffee recently from last 4th of July week visit in 2024 and wanted to compare the two from visiting on the 4th of July itself in 2025 here. Westlake Coffee & Cafe was a bit of a mixed bag for me and perhaps more of a 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up in this case as I'm giving some benefit of the doubt and some things exceeded expectations. Also, a prior Yelp reviewer essentially said great sandwiches, nice staff, etc., what more could you ask for, and only gave 3-stars; never stated any reason why it was a mediocre 3-stars, so another reason I'm rounding to 4-stars. Also, I gave SML Coffee 3-stars, and I wanted to distinguish that Westlake Coffee & Cafe was superior to me. My girlfriend & I were staying at her parents' home around 4th of July 2025 and wanted to eat out for lunch. Lunch options are a bit limited, but we saw this online, menu, reviews, & seemed like a decent choice. My g/f's mom warned us that they are very slow, so have your patience. I said I know I read that online could take 30 minutes. Also, the portions are big and might consider splitting sandwich. When we arrived, I ordered a chicken salad sandwich & g/f got a turkey caprese both on sourdough bread. We figured we'd eat half of ours & switch to try each others. Also, I said we could split a large Caramel Latte, but it seems like I was charged 70 cents more than the posted price. My g/f believes that it was a 4th tier not on the menu. $5.25 small, $5.75 medium, $6.45 large, & not printed on the menu was a 4th tier Extra Large as it does say Extra Large on the receipt. This extra 70 cent discrepancy bugged me, but I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt per what my g/f thinks. The woman cashier was cordial, but wasn't quite as nice as Smith Mountain Coffee. I asked for water while we were waiting to another person, which I interacted with 2 staff members, the one I asked & one who handed me the water, who were friendlier. As for the wait time, this exceeded our expectations of the long 20-30 minute wait, it was more like 10-15 minutes, and while that's not great, I was pleasantly surprised when the food & drink was ready. The quality of the iced latte was far superior to the drink I got at SML Coffee. Huge win to Westlake on that! The sandwiches were better than the wrap I got at SML too. The sandwiches use Boar's Head Meats & cheeses. The chicken salad sandwich was great, and my g/f Turkey Caprese was solid too. As it turns out, we both liked what our original choice better than the other, but both of us like both. This is a small place with very limited seating, so better to take to go if it makes sense, but it's nicely decorated with comfortable seating. Also, the original cashier was friendlier at the end. She might've been slightly stressed with orders & our couple of questions. Overall, in spite of a couple of negatives, we'd return when down here.

The s'mores latte is usually my go-to, though I've had several different drinks here and all have been great - hot or iced. They also have some really nice cafe food items that are nice for breakfast or lunch. We've had a number of their baked goods and have never been disappointed. We usually pick up several things to have at our rental for breakfasts and desserts. I've been often enough to make sure and get some of the seasonal options you can't always get. Their fall items are especially good. They've also got some cool merch and gift items. I've added a couple of pretty mugs to my coffee station here at home. The staff is always friendly and are very helpful with suggestions on drinks and food. If you haven't been in, you're really missing out.

My girlfriend's parent's have a house by Smith Mountain Lake, and she recommended SML. We were down there during the week around 4th of July 2024. We went the day before the 4th on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. In terms of the quality of drink & food, it's subpar, but staff was friendly & accommodating, which gets it from 2 to 3-stars for me. We went for lunch getting a turkey wrap & iced chai. Turkey wrap was decent, but it was kind of a small amount of meat & wrap overall. It came with chips. It wasn't that much food, but I didn't care too much as I was ok with a bit lighter. As for the iced chai, it was weak. It was mostly milk, not much of the flavoring. I told them to add more chai to it, which they did but it was kind of too late. They were nice and remade me a latte drink since I didn't like the chai. The latte was better, but not great either. My g/f agreed afterward that SML was weaker than she remembered. It's a cute place with a gift shop, nice staff, but drink especially was subpar.

So wonderful the first morning of our stay at Smith Mountain Lake that we returned for the 2nd!…read moreFood, service - all top notch! Old Oak Cafe is situated in a strip shopping center, but is designed to make you feel like you've stepped into someone's home. The back room houses a faux (I assume) fireplace and round oak dining tables. The southern hospitality we received from the staff is as inviting as the space. They also have a large bookshelf of children's picture books and activities. So thoughtful and a wonderful option for tablet-free families. Our first visit was around 11:30 am on a Sunday and there was about a 20-min wait with the post-church crowd. The interior waiting space was full so we opted to wait outside. They offer a buffet breakfast on the weekends for $14.99. It looked to have biscuits and gravy, eggs, a variety of meats and fruit. We opted for menu options. I noticed they offered foam plates for buffet-goers, which made me cringe. I hope they will consider changing to something more environmentally-friendly. We were greeted as soon as we sat and offered coffee. Our server on both visits were incredibly kind! On Sunday, our server was a bit slower with coffee refills, but it was incredibly busy so I understood why. On our first visit, hubs had the cinnamon sweet potato pancakes while I chose multigrain. Both were so fluffy and delicious! The sweet potato pancakes drew us back the next day. They were topped with a cinnamon sugar butter and fresh pecans. The flavor was out of this world! Even the multigrain pancakes were light, fluffy and so yummy. I got blueberry pancakes on my 2nd trip and wish I had ordered these. The blueberry, while tasty, were more dense and not quite as flavorful. The Sweet Potato and Multigrain pancakes are worth 5 stars alone, but the service and value set Old Oak Cafe over the top. I'm ready to plan another trip to SML solely for this breakfast!

I wanted to try something new so I tried the Key Lime Pie flavor in a small cup ($4.99). It was sooo creamy and tasted exactly like the pie- tangy and sweet! I also loved that it had bits of graham cracker in it. They have a decent amount of outdoor seating, but it gets crowded very quickly. Don't forget to check out their products! They sell their own ice cream in pints + quarts, milk, baking ingredients, pastries, sauces, etc. I live in NJ and I found out that they sell some of their products in Wegmans and Whole Foods (select locations)... Had a horrible experience with this store and/or Kroger corporate. I'm not sure who is at fault…read morebut, ultimately, it should be resolved by this Kroger. I drove 30+ minutes late at night to pick up things for a special breakfast. Website said store was open till midnight each day. Arrived 11:02pm. Store was closed. Sign on door says store is open 7-11 each day, different from website. Called store (confirmed it was right one) to find out what was going on and which was right, or if store was open but I just failed to get in for some reason. Asked automated system for hours. It said 7-10 each day. So now we have three different sets of hours. While doing this, two other cars, unrelated to each other, pulled up and people tried and failed to enter the store. You web site and phone system both have different store hours listed than the ones listed on the door. So three sets of hours and no idea what's right. You are doing a disservice to your customers. I wasted more than an hour of my time and, more importantly, don't have what I need for a special breakfast. How many people show up each night thinking you are open? How long has this been incorrect? When will it be fixed. We do like the store, but in this day and age of technology, there is no excuse for publishing three sets of hours, two of which are incorrect and leave people sitting in your parking lot late at night after having driven far from home.

Rising from the ashes like a Phoenix, Donnie D's Bagels & Deli recently reopened after recovering…read morefrom a devastating fire, that occurred not that long after they had opened. I happened to be at it's original inauguration on the first day it opened and took some wonderful photographs of the occasion, from the many people that were there, to a close look of me having one of their amazing bagels with cream cheese, to one of the bagel bakers putting the bagels in the oven to cook to perfection. At that time I wrote a brief review because I wanted my photographs to tell the story of this family-owned business of a product so well regarded and liked by our community. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying that review to get a better sense of the place and its amazing bagels. Today, I was simply in the area and unaware that their renovation had finished a couple of months ago, allowing them to resume production of their highly sought-after product. So when I went in to inquire if they were back to normal, and the answer was in the affirmative, I immediately proceeded to order a Bacon, Egg and Cheddar Cheese Bagel Breakfast Sandwich and a cup of coffee. Bagels, simple as they may seem, are one of my favorites food items, especially for breakfast, with cream cheese or with bacon, egg, and cheese. And Donnie D's Bagels, are in my opinion, the best in the area. On this occasion I was able to document how the bagels are made. Through a large glass window, I had the privilege to photograph and video the owner and his son making the bagels out of the dough, while the owner's grandson explained who they were to some customers seated at a booth near the window. And confirm that this is truly a local family-owned and operated business. While I was there, I observed how all of a sudden, the lines grew longer and longer, with customers proudly purchasing large bags full of bagels. After all, it was Christmas Eve, and the customers were probably looking forward to sharing these quality bagels with family and close friends. To conclude, I highly recommend this Donnie D's, New York Style, Bagels & Deli for their consistently fresh, chewy bagels and delicious deli sandwiches that truly capture NYC flavor in Roanoke, and because they're a beloved local business that truly cares about quality, and their staff always make you feel welcome, making it a true gem in our community.

I assume it's staffing issues but the inside was slow my most recent visit at 8:30. Also, I really want to support local so I am hoping this comes across as constructive criticism. The dining area in the morning is not kept up or organized, chairs are everywhere and workers seem consumed with to go orders instead of the restaurant. The bagels have great flavor and the cream cheese is always perfect, but please toast the bagel. A warm bagel is not a toasted bagel it's almost seemed microwaved. Maybe I'm ordering wrong, but I want a toasted bagel that's browned. Lastly, is 8 dollars for bagel and coffee the right price? National average is 6 and it's 8 in NYC or Seattle.
