So wonderful the first morning of our stay at Smith Mountain Lake that we returned for the 2nd! Food, service - all top notch! Old Oak Cafe is situated in a strip shopping center, but is designed to make you feel like you've stepped into someone's home. The back room houses a faux (I assume) fireplace and round oak dining tables. The southern hospitality we received from the staff is as inviting as the space. They also have a large bookshelf of children's picture books and activities. So thoughtful and a wonderful option for tablet-free families. Our first visit was around 11:30 am on a Sunday and there was about a 20-min wait with the post-church crowd. The interior waiting space was full so we opted to wait outside. They offer a buffet breakfast on the weekends for $14.99. It looked to have biscuits and gravy, eggs, a variety of meats and fruit. We opted for menu options. I noticed they offered foam plates for buffet-goers, which made me cringe. I hope they will consider changing to something more environmentally-friendly. We were greeted as soon as we sat and offered coffee. Our server on both visits were incredibly kind! On Sunday, our server was a bit slower with coffee refills, but it was incredibly busy so I understood why. On our first visit, hubs had the cinnamon sweet potato pancakes while I chose multigrain. Both were so fluffy and delicious! The sweet potato pancakes drew us back the next day. They were topped with a cinnamon sugar butter and fresh pecans. The flavor was out of this world! Even the multigrain pancakes were light, fluffy and so yummy. I got blueberry pancakes on my 2nd trip and wish I had ordered these. The blueberry, while tasty, were more dense and not quite as flavorful. The Sweet Potato and Multigrain pancakes are worth 5 stars alone, but the service and value set Old Oak Cafe over the top. The service is always fast and friendly. We placed a carry out order over the phone and the food was ready when we arrived. The dining room was packed and people were waiting for tables. A solid breakfast spot! They have several options and a buffet open as well till 2pm. We were a large group and called beforehand to make sure they had space for us. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful, with good suggestions as well. We came around noon. While some of us got breakfast, I went with more of a lunch vibe. Nichole was our waitress and she was so attentive and nice and friendly.My husband and I had the homemade chicken dumpling soup which was delicious and I also had the best onion rings. While visiting friends at Smith Mountain Lake, we visited the Old Oak Cafe for breakfast. What an amazing place ! My husband ordered the plain eggs Benedict with a side of homemade corn beef hash; so delicious! My friend and I both ordered omelets, with rye toast, and cheesey grits. Let me tell you, it was the most fluffy flavor filled omelet I had ever had. I am an omelet snob, but this omelet has the exact amount of swiss cheese. The rye toast was fresh and apparently was from a local bakery! The cheesey grits were excellent as well!!!!!! My other friend had the Sunday breakfast buffet and was equally as happy! This place was such a treat! We stopped in for Sunday breakfast. You could tell the place was popular because it was super busy with lots of people waiting to be seated. Despite all that, however, we only had to wait 15 minutes to get a party of 6 seated. The hostess and our waitress were both extremely friendly, seriously great customer service. The menu is a lot of your typical diner food with a few fun options thrown in and it's ALL delicious! Everyone loved everything that they had, not a complaint in the entire group. I highly recommend either version of the eggs benedict, the sweet potato pancakes and also the Reuben. The dinner menu has a little for any body, but not too large. there were three in our party and we all agree the meals were edible but nothing to write home about. I came in expecting standard diner food...while the cups and ambiance is diner, the food is anything but. We both got mimosas, the blue ridge eggs Benedict, and the fried steak and eggs. I had been wanting to try the Old Oak Cafe for a while after seeing it online and we finally got a chance to give it a go in June. We stopped in at about 11am on a Friday morning and there was one family ahead of us to be seated. We only waited a couple of minutes before we were sat at a table and offered drinks. I was tempted by their mimosas, but ended up grabbing a coffee since I hadn't exercised yet. I ordered the Blue Ridge Eggs Benedict with fried potatoes and my significant other had a made to order omelette. We also got a side of fried apples to share. My Benedict was delicious and filling, and the eggs were perfectly poached. My boyfriend said the omelette was ok, but he would have liked the cheese to be mixed into it instead of melted on top. He also said the toast had a bit too much butter and that he'd probably order it dry in the future, but he really liked the fried potatoes. We thought the prices were fair and the service was pretty good given the staffing shortages many restaurants are facing right now. We may be back in the future to try their Sunday breakfast buffet or lunch/dinner entrees. read more

We had been eating there for years, but had a bad experience the last time we were there. After drinking our water, a member of our party noticed a bug and clod of dirt at the bottom of their water glass. When we showed it to our waitress, they were very nonchalant about it. I said something to the manager and asked what their sanitation rating was. She explained that Virginia isn't required to post it, and she refused to tell me.
