Our fave dishes are the cinnamon roll French toast and smoked salmon omelette. We get them and split them so we both get sweet and savory breakfasts! The CRFT is always cooked perfectly, never soggy and doesn't need any syrup. The smoked salmon omelette over flows with smoked salmon and creamy dill sauce, it's to die for. It took me a while to get to Danville, Indiana's Bread Basket Cafe & Bakery, a popular establishment since it opened in 2005 not far from Danville town square. Bread Basket is, as you might guess, both a cafe and bakery. It is established in what appears to have been a house. There are a couple accessible parking spots (though they are frequently hard to get) and there's a ramp for entrance in the back of the restaurant. It's not what I'd call perfectly accessible, however, there's no denying the effort has been made. Bread Basket is locally and family owned. They buy local produce, eggs, coffee, and tea as much as possible and note that they compost and reduce waste by more than half by recycling. It started with the simple words: "Lord, what do you want me to do with my time?" Through the years since that prayer was uttered, the little cafe that began as the unexpected answer to that question has grown into a family business with three generations and dozens of talented staff. The menu for the cafe is breakfast/brunch. It's somewhat modest in size, however, it has the necessities like biscuits & gravy, french toast, breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, waffles, etc. The lunch menu leans toward lighter fare. The bakery focuses on breads, rolls, cakes, and pies. They do have a Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Chocolate Cake. I'll admit I leaned somewhat toward a 4-star here (I find the parking especially a bit frustrating), but I like the experience, the service is top-notch, the food is good, and I love the devotion they have to local. So, I'm skewing upward and going with the 5-star. I'm also very appreciative of the well-done ramp (which I completely forgot to photograph). Bread Basket Cafe & Bakery is a popular upscale cafe in the heart of Danville. The cafe is in an old house that has been remodeled to serve guests. The place is immaculate with an artsy vibe. We were greeted immediately, but hypnotized by the large case of amazing fresh homemade pies near the front. We were seated at a cozy table with pillows on our benches. Charity, our server, was friendly and attentive. The menu offers breakfast until 11 a.m., then lunch. I had a bowl of chicken soup which comes with a slice of their homemade bread toasted. The soup was thick and creamy and the noodles tasted freshly made. The soup and toast were delicious and filling. My husband had the ham and swiss sandwich, which also come their homemade bread. There was an apricot jam on the ham which added dimension to the sandwich and was delicious. The sandwich was served with kettle chips. We left no room for the pie....next time. You can buy cakes, pies and breads to go home. Prices are on the high side, but the food is definitely high quality. There is a dedicated parking lot next to the building. The Bread basket cafe is a quaint little cafe with a very nice comforting atmosphere and decor that is super warm and cozy. As soon as you walk in the sitting area is very welcoming. Once you notice the enticing desserts on display your mouth starts watering and your mind starts contemplating the future decisions you are about to make. The menu is simple and the selections are enough to please even the pickiest of eaters. I kept it simple and chose the biscuits and gravy and coffee but I got a cinnamon roll to go. What a gem! We have a lunch meeting here and despite the rush there were lots of books for us to have a private chat. The servers were friendly and gracious and the menu was just large enough to offer multiple options. They have parking in back as well as a ramp, and side yard parking as well. It is in an old house so the inside is quaint and fun. I loved the cheerful decor. Our group have varied health challenges but they had meats, sandwiches and salads so everyone could find something. The prices were average if a bit high, but the portions were ample. I loved my salmon omelette and the side of fruit. Delicious! I would recommend this spot when in Danville! read more

Wow was able to revisit the bread basket for lunch with my wife. They had a daily special of the choice of tuna salad in a tomato with a side salad. First very quaint location and luckily I was there at 11 for lunch as the dining area isn't huge. Its and old house converted into a cafe. The service was great and we even had an overview of all the desserts of which there are a lot of great choices. The tuna salad and tomato was great and a good choice on the hottest day of the year. I ordered sour cream lemon pie to go for later. Also picked up some cinnamon rolls and two loafs of bread on my way out. Went here for breakfast and we were so impressed! If your looking for a feel good, homie vibe brunch spot look no further. This is the first restaurant I've been to with a side of fruit that was worth it! Everything was delicious but my favorite was the roasted potato skins they had a hot kick to them that was sooo good! For years my partner and I have driven pass this place and we always saw a little sign in front of what looked like a small craftsman-ish style house. We finally decided to explore it because they have rave reviews. The entrance is in the back of the house with ample parking. You get inside and there's a small sitting area where most folks waiting to be seated stay. Beyond this space, you walk pass the kitchen area and to the main dining space. They have a couple of display case of different pies, cookies, etc. They have a few tables and they were packed on Saturday morning which explains the long-ish wait for a table and food. The wait was definitely worth it though! My partner ordered half of their chili and half of their Greek salad and I ordered half chicken salad croissant and half summer salad plate with tuna salad - we ate everything!! So delicious and this spot will make it to the rotation of spots the we will visit again and again. We can't wait to try out all the other items on their menu. Do yourself a favor and try them out! This place was so good, I'll definitely be back! The atmosphere was so cute it was a house with different dining rooms. We loved the salt and pepper shakers on the tables, they were so cute! Every table was different one was an avocado, another sea shells another armadillo. The have an amazing dessert case making it difficult to choose but I went for the coconut cream pie. Their food was different offering a variety of healthy salads, breads, and sandwiches. It was not the same old club or hamburger-type sandwiches. I have heard about Bread Basket for years and have always wanted to come in. I was finally able to one Wednesday morning when I knew I'd be in the area and that my baby would be sleeping. Of course, my baby was not sleeping so what I had hoped would be a coffee and quiet morning with myself turned into a sweet little time with him. Multiple employees came by to talk to my son and they were sure to let me know what they had to offer him. I ended up getting a coffee and a slice of the buttermilk pie which is now my absolute favorite pie I've ever had. The coffee was great too. My whole experience was really nice. Parking spots fill quickly, but after one time driving through the nearby library parking lot,which does tow if you aren't a library patron, then I was able to find a spot in the small lot that is dedicated to The Bread Basket customers. The entrance is through the back door. As you come in there are lots of baked goods in cases available for purchase. They even have a few gluten free options, although I wish there were more. I had met a friend there to eat and catch up. We were placed in the back room where only one other group of women were seated, yet sometimes I did have a little difficulty hearing my friend. I have been in the same room on other occasions however and things were quiet then, so I think it depends on the others seated near you. I try to stay away from bread products, so I ordered the Chia Pudding with Berries and Seeds. I was afraid it would leave me hungry so I also inquired and was happy to learn I could order a small fruit plate which wasn't on the menu.(Even though the fruit plate was the small, it was piled high with lots of fresh fruit) The Chia Pudding came in a beautiful crystal dish! I also ordered The Market Spice Tea, which is made by Our SpecialTea and is available to purchase by the bag up front by the register. I chose to have my tea served hot and it was served in the cutest cast iron tea pot which they left on the table for me. I was able to pour two full cups plus a half cup in a to go cup they gave me. My friend ordered the half order biscuits and gravy and loved it! My sister and I took our mother to lunch at the Bread Basket Cafe & Bakery for her 78th birthday. We arrived around noon on a Friday and expected a bit of a wait since this is a popular lunch spot in Danville. We were greeted upon entering the back door of the restaurant and told it would be a 15-20 minute wait. We were sat about 15 minutes later and let to a table through the restaurant in the back. There is a fireplace and a lovely ambiance no matter where you are seated. We were greeted warmly by our server, Hallie. She let us know the soup of the day and went to get our drinks. We ordered, and our food came out about 10-15 minutes later. We were all very pleased with our selections and enjoyed our visit to celebrate our mother's birthday. I loved my B.L.T.E.A. with the kettle chips. My mother also got a piece of their coconut cream pie, which is absolutely delicious. Post Covid and this place did not miss a beat. The table cloths were replaced with hand painted tables for easier cleaning and are a little more spaced. It's the same great staff and same delicious food. Our favorites here include the farm fresh eggs, fresh fruit variety, homemade toasts, and during the summer- the local Arcane Cold Brew Coffee. Today's special toast which was included with 2 eggs, was the apple cinnamon toast. This house converted to a bakery in Danville is so precious. The restaurant is fairly quite and intimate. You are able to speak to the person across from you without any trouble. The food at the bread basket is so tasty. I typically get the summery grilled cheese but I opted for an omelet this time. The eggs were fully and the ingredients tasted fresh. My omelet came with their homemade toast and I decided to get blueberry lemon bread. To be honest it was just sweet enough but it originally came out burnt so I requested a new piece. The kind ladies that work here politely obliged. That's another thing, the ladies that work here are the nicest and most friendly people around. I don't think I've ever seen one of them even frown. We've heard wonderful things from family about Bread Basket and they are frequent visitors. So we decided to visit Bread Basket and do some shopping while in Danville. As we approached we found a parking lot next door to the Cafe. A sign on the front porch instructed patrons to enter through the back entrance. The back entrance has a nice ramp for those with mobility issues. The house turned restaurant has small rooms and the tables are fairly close together. As you enter through the back you need to walk to the front to put your name on a wait list or be seated. We waited a little over a half-hour for a table which was in the smaller dining room next to the restroom. As we were seated we received a breakfast and lunch menu that is simple but covers the breakfast staples (omelettes, waffles, french toast, oatmeal, biscuits & gravy) and lunch with several salads and sandwiches (BBQ Pork, Turkey Club, Chicken Crossiant, Grilled Portabella) plus more. My husband had the biscuits and gravy which was good and I had the Chicken Crossiant and we both had a cup of Chicken and Rice Soup. My chicken salad was just okay and the soup was tasty. We didn't have time for dessert but from the items inside the dessert case I highly recommend you have desserts. I wanted to take something home but we weren't going start home and the icing would have melted. Today I stopped in at this establishment at 7:30 (opening time) to grab a coffee and pastry on my way to Indianapolis. I ordered the pumpkin cinnamon roll and a coffee and got in my car heading west. If I had to describe Bread Basket to a friend, I would say that this cafe and bakery is the shabby chic version of Indy's Cake Bake Shop, minus the glitter. I have never seen so many varieties of cake in one building! It made it difficult for this solo diner to choose just one slice. I ended up going with the blackberry and wine chocolate cake with a vanilla buttercream frosting. My oh my...this piece was a sugary monster. It had four layers! While I did enjoy all of the layers of cake and frosting, I really couldn't tell that its ingredients included blackberry and wine. I tried once, but didn't check the hours and learned they were closed (Sundays and Mondays) upon arrival. They also operate for brunch hours only (7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) Earlier this week, I read that the cafe was recently recognized in People magazine for its cinnamon roll french toast, which was named the number one breakfast food in Indiana. I happened to be home on a Thursday afternoon, so I stopped into the old house-turned-restaurant around 2:30 p.m., right before closing time. I've heard about the fantastic soups so I got a small cup of the soup of the day (chicken noodle) and the summery grilled cheese to go with it. The soup tasted fresh and the grilled cheese was AMAZING - and I say this as someone who is a connoisseur of grilled cheese sandwiches. It featured mozzarella and provolone, tomatoes, and homemade pesto on their made from scratch honey oat bread. Forget the french toast - this sandwich puts Bread Basket Cafe on the map. As I was waiting, I made the mistake of checking out the display case with all of the baked goods. One of the staff noticed me over there drooling and offered a "tour" of the selections. After an unnecessarily long deliberation, I ended up going with the deliciously sweet and moist blackberry wine chocolate cake. It's probably a good thing I work downtown and can't get here during operating hours most days because I'd likely be here too much.
