I've heard nothing but good things about Bread and Salt, but haven't been free to go during their small window of availability. I arrived before they opened on a Saturday and still managed to be fifth in line, with several people lining up behind me over the next few minutes. When they opened their doors, there were still empty cases as they were stocking their shelves, so I'm not sure I had a full view of their offerings for the day despite being one of the first customers. I ordered the vanilla cream bombolone, the tomato focaccia (which came straight from the oven), a pizette (only because I didn't want to get half a Rossa for myself), and asked the staff to surprise me with a sandwich (they still hadn't been put in the display case). I must say, everything was top notch. I started with the warm focaccia, which had a great chew and the perfect balance with flaky sea salt, briny olives, and sweet tomatoes. The bombolone was light and fluffy and the vanilla cream filling was so flavorful. The pizzette was made with a laminated crust and topped with a robust sauce. To finish it off, my surprise sandwich was the salami, Gorgonzola, and fig jam. I think it could've used more Gorgonzola and fig to cut through the salty and fatty salami but the flavors were great. I had a nice picnic down the block at Riverview park and on my way back, around 11:30, there was still a line, but it looked pretty manageable. We arrived 2 minutes after opening and there were already 10 people ahead of us in line. Luckily it moved pretty quick. We order about 15 minutes later and got our order 10 minutes after that. If you're looking for a quick grab & go, this is not the place for you. You're greeted by the delicious smell of fresh bread and pastries. Most items they have are out on display so it could change week by week. The Focaccia came out fresh so we got a slice of that. It was fluffy, chewy, and pillowy with a slightly oily crust and freshness from the tomatoes. The Pizzette di Sfoglia was buttery, flaky, and light; I just wish it was warm or more cheesy. Now these next 2 were my favorites! The Vanilla Cream Bombolone was so soft and the vanilla cream was lusciously smooth, lightly sweet, and creamy. I think it was made with real vanilla bean which is amazing! The Mozzarella, Arugula, and Tomato Confit Sandwich actually surprised me. The mozzarella was fresh and mild, the arugula and tomato added that freshness and herbaceousness to each bite, and the bread was crusty with a good chew. Im already less keen on pizza than most. The mozzarella pie was better than the tomato, but neither impressed me. Especially at $54 (!!) two halves of the cheese (it's a lot of pizza). I tend toward topic heavy pizzas so traditionalists may resonate more with this. It wasn't made clear that halves could be ordered so we ended up way over ordering. Had a sandwich the next day and the ingredients were good, but not enough of the good stuff like fig jam for the $17 price. It's a little spot the opens a couple of garage doors. Not seating but some standing tables in a covered area outside. You can shop for other products like sauce, pasta, and drinks. Weird hours and made to order is just not worth it for me. read more

Bread and Salt has been on my list for years and I finally made it thanks to a good friend with wheels! We arrived at 11:57 AM on a Friday and there was a short line. We ordered a sandwich and a few pastries: + vanilla bomboloni + Raspberry cookie + mortadella + Mozzarella and eggplant sandwich The mortadella sandwich was incredible, and my favorite pastry was the bamboloni. Raspberry cookie was also great. Pizzas didn't begin until 12:25, but we were still there eating our treats so we were able to grab two pizzas without waiting too long! The cheese pizza was incredible - definitely would recommend that. I thought the famed red pizza was only okay so would skip. This place is like a garage that opens its doors. There are standing tables covered by umbrellas but no seating which makes this more of a grab and go spot. My group got here around 11:50am in a Friday and there was barely any line but it started to build a little after noon. The bread here is heavenly! The sandwich bread is super thin, crispy and the right amount of oily. I also got a half tomato focaccia which was super fluffy and beautifully charred on top with the tomatoes. Mortadella sandwich - I never thought bread and a cold cut could be so delicious. That being said, I did wish there was cheese on the sandwich especially since it's $14. Fennel salami and pecorino sandwich - our favorite! The thin crispy bread was perfect with the meat and cheese. Prosciutto, eggplant and cheese sandwich - came on different bread than the other sandwiches. It was more like a baguette than crispy flatbread like the others. The prosciutto is not cured so it's more like ham. Bomboloni - do not miss out on these!! Perfectly fluffy and lightly sugared with vanilla or cherry custard inside. The focaccia bread truly is divine. Airy yet crispy and well salted. I don't think anyone could leave disappointed after having such fresh and perfected bread. So, while previously I have been hesitant about the high prices, especially for the sandwiches, I have never had better bread in the entire NY/NJ area. I am now a Bread and Salt bread believer. The bread truly is a work of art. If I lived closer I would absolutely try to get my daily bread from here. The sandwiches continue to be simple, fresh, classic flavors done well. Fennel and pecorino is top notch. Today I ordered one and it was stuffed with plenty of sausage and pecorino cheese, almost a charcuterie board's worth. I've tried the mortadella and it's plain, but if you are a mortadella lover, it's quality. Expensive? Yes. But these sandwiches could be quite a treat when you are feeling like splurging a bit and enjoying something of quality. The rotating freshly made items I look forward trying in the future, especially anything with roasted tomatoes, garlic confit, etc. on that delicious bread. So, it took me a couple of visits to truly appreciate what is going on here at Bread and Salt. I'd say I get it now- simple, classic, pure flavors and ingredients. Seems you can no longer order online for pick up. My friends said she could have swore if you did order for pick up it was 2 pizzas for the price of one. I guess they don't do that anymore lmao 1st- I can't stand a place with a shoddy website that now only appears to sell gift cards lol. Similar to 4 Charles, an Outback quality prime rib and mediocre burger spot that thrives on no phones and hard to get reservations. This place is the same. Mediocre pizza, if you can call it that. The pizzas are VERY small and are VERY overpriced. Toppings are VERY skimpy. There are far better options, in my opinion. You really don't have to drop $50-$100 in this place for what you could buy double of in an Italian grocery on Central Ave and any decent pizza place nearby in NJ for $30-$50. Small space only good for a grab and go- kinda cheap looking, nothing special but the owner or maybe employee sure seems to think so- big egos here. Not my style. It looks like a money grab spot as soon as you walk up. Overpriced items neatly placed on shelves. You can see people waiting in line- this is a gimmick to create a preceived value.... Sourdough loaf, olive oil cake, any one of their sandwiches, iced cafe leccese, that little green bean side dish, macchiatos. These are just a few of my favorite things from Bread & Salt. This unique little spot helps make The Heights such a great place. They are only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I a pretty sure they close by like 3 or 4, so there is usually a line and then a wait. But I am pretty confident it is worth it! A few things to note before you go for the first time: -There are no seats, but a few high top tables that folks tend to share with others. -There bread is fantastic! I usually get a full or half loaf to bring home, eat as much as I can in a day or two and then slice and freeze the rest. -Their coffees have usually come for me in little cups to stay. This was a surprise to me the first time I came, but turned out to be a nice way to slow down for a few minutes and sip my macchiato on a walk with my pup at one of the hightops (see photos for a look at macchiato and also pup). -I've heard the pizza is delicious! That's for my next visit. But I usually go for the sandwiches which are pretty outrageously good. -The line doesn't usually get too bad until like 11 or so, so go early and you'll be in and out. While I wish I could stop by on a random week day, the fact that they are only Fri-Sun makes it a weekend treat and something to do on the way home from the Farmers Market at Riverview Park. read more

Very popular spot that's worth trying. Found the items hit or miss. The spinach tart and focaccia slice were good, though the bread leaned a bit burnt. Puntarelle salad is worth trying simply for its relative rarity on menus nowadays. Appreciate the simplicity of items and ingredients overall, but found the sandwich underwhelming. Didn't find the bread special, a bit tough, so it fell flat. Great salads with lovely dressings. Found this place to be an interesting concept as it's open only during the weekends! I was really looking to try out pizza at their bakery but they said, they don't sell it by slice so they suggested focaccia bread which was similar to pizza. The best part was that it tasted really fresh with tomatoes, green olive and a bit of olive oil added on it. When Bread and Salt opened some years ago, the concept was slightly different. It was open for dinner, and you'd order slices from one of up to six pizzas sitting at the counter. Since COVID, the hours have been scaled back to just midday Fridays though Sundays, there's no more ordering by the slice, and the seating's moved outside. Regardless, the quality of the food remains the same, if not better. The menu is constantly adapting like the concept, but in its current form, you can order full pies, sandwiches and desserts. This place is truly worth checking out for a weekend lunch, but make sure you plan for a wait. Lines more but can take up to half an hour. Updated review. Very limited hours, weekends now from 10 to 4, high prices, and a curated menu. First, I live two blocks from here and I am glad they exist. I've been a customer for three years and all the way up to a $14 veggie sandwich but I drew the line there. I'm sorry, I have to balance price to value at some point in time. I noticed this week they returned to $12, so maybe they capitulated. I honestly don't know how much is real costs and how much is just seeing what they can charge. Quality is excellent, but a few of their offerings have been less than stellar considering the price. I disliked "braised" zucchini, very mushy and wet. I lost a tooth cap to their biscotti and I miss for their pre-Covid mushroom pizza. Now that that's off my chest, I feel better, 5/5 food, 4/5 service, 3.5/5 value. read more

If you like to be in control of the pizza you get, you hate waiting for things that normally come quick, and if three available pizzas at 6:45pm followed by no available pizzas at 6:55pm sounds like a terrible time, you might be annoyed. If you like beyond amazing pizza with choices that change every 10 minutes, a supplemental menu that changes on the daily, and have no place else in particular to be, you will feel most at home at Bread and Salt. It's no wonder Pete Wells has got Jersey City on his radar - Razza was (and continues to be) an incredible find, and Bread and Salt is another surefire gem, and is also the only authentic Roman style pizza place around. How does it work? Well, however they want it to. Bread and Salt basically makes whatever pizza they are "feeling" at the moment. Could be no cheese at all, could be fresh mozzarella, could be topped with nduja (look it up) and potato. No matter what it is, rest assured it will be made with authentic Italian ingredients and be topped with just the right amount of salt and olive oil. The crust was fantastic and I could drink the sauce, if presented with the opportunity to do so. How many slices did we have? I honestly lost count. I would say ~4 each, probably a little more. We also enjoyed the honey & ricotta (so creamy) and tangerine & grapefruit salad (yes, olive oil on fruit is a surefire win), and although we were really looking forward to the meatballs, they weren't on the menu that night. Not to worry, we will be back. As we were leaving, they were putting out a caramelized onion, guanciale, and pecorino cheese pizza. As full as we were, we had to try a slice. Amazing. The guanciale was insane, a few very thin slices add an incredible amount of flavor. And...since we were standing up there, I got salami and provolone sandwich, delicious meat and cheese in between two very thin slices of what I imagine is the very same dough they use for the pizza. Topped with EVOO and salt, this was my lunch the next day and I can say with very little doubt that it was truly one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Like amazing, authentic roman-style pizza? They change their menu periodically and are open just 3 days a week! The owner steps out to handover your pizzas and chats around. We had a good chat with him and understood his love for what he does and his authenticity from Italy that reflects in his food. They have some good options for desserts, ricotta cheesecake being their most popular one. They have several types of pizzas, a bit expensive though. Half pizza was for $27! Fantastic bakery and worth the wait! You know you're in the right spot when you see people waiting and eating at the tables on the sidewalk - certainly stands out from the neighborhood. Beautiful little market space with Italian goods and drinks for sale. But the star of this show is certainly the baked goods. It's always made to order, be prepared to wait 5-10 minutes after chatting with the cashier. The focaccia is doughy towards the center, crunchy at the crust, and covered in delicious tomatoes. I really enjoyed the sandwich with the thin and crispy crust used in place of bread.
