I came right after opening on Sunday and there was basically no wait. I got two things - the focaccia with tomato & the classic donut. Both were great. I especially loved the donut. It was so airy and not too sweet and also huge. It reminds me of the twisty Korean donut I grew up eating.
I went on a Friday around 11:45 am to pick up lunch to this Heights neighborhood gem. Happy to grab half of a tomato focaccia, asparagus torte, salami Gorgonzola fig jam sandwich and a vanilla bombaloni. The staff is friendly and the location is super casual. Everything was delicious and I'd love to go back the next time I stay in Jersey City.
I've heard nothing but good things about Bread and Salt, but haven't been free to go during their small window of availability. I arrived before they opened on a Saturday and still managed to be fifth in line, with several people lining up behind me over the next few minutes. When they opened their doors, there were still empty cases as they were stocking their shelves, so I'm not sure I had a full view of their offerings for the day despite being one of the first customers. I ordered the vanilla cream bombolone, the tomato focaccia (which came straight from the oven), a pizette (only because I didn't want to get half a Rossa for myself), and asked the staff to surprise me with a sandwich (they still hadn't been put in the display case). I must say, everything was top notch. I started with the warm focaccia, which had a great chew and the perfect balance with flaky sea salt, briny olives, and sweet tomatoes. The bombolone was light and fluffy and the vanilla cream filling was so flavorful. The pizzette was made with a laminated crust and topped with a robust sauce. To finish it off, my surprise sandwich was the salami, Gorgonzola, and fig jam. I think it could've used more Gorgonzola and fig to cut through the salty and fatty salami but the flavors were great. I had a nice picnic down the block at Riverview park and on my way back, around 11:30, there was still a line, but it looked pretty manageable. All in all, would definitely go again to try other items!
Ordered: Vanilla Cream Bombolone (~$6) Pizzette di Sfoglia (~$5): mozzarella rossa Focaccia Slice (~$7): tomato & olive Mozzarella, Arugula, and Tomato Confit Sandwich (~$16) Aya's take: Bread & Salt is a neighborhood gem and I can absolutely see why! We arrived 2 minutes after opening and there were already 10 people ahead of us in line. Luckily it moved pretty quick. We order about 15 minutes later and got our order 10 minutes after that. If you're looking for a quick grab & go, this is not the place for you. You're greeted by the delicious smell of fresh bread and pastries. Most items they have are out on display so it could change week by week. The Focaccia came out fresh so we got a slice of that. It was fluffy, chewy, and pillowy with a slightly oily crust and freshness from the tomatoes. The Pizzette di Sfoglia was buttery, flaky, and light; I just wish it was warm or more cheesy. Now these next 2 were my favorites! The Vanilla Cream Bombolone was so soft and the vanilla cream was lusciously smooth, lightly sweet, and creamy. I think it was made with real vanilla bean which is amazing! The Mozzarella, Arugula, and Tomato Confit Sandwich actually surprised me. The mozzarella was fresh and mild, the arugula and tomato added that freshness and herbaceousness to each bite, and the bread was crusty with a good chew. It could've used a dressing for more flavor and less dryness but still great. Everything had a homemade taste & feel which I appreciated. I totally understand why people line up to come here. Definitely worth a try!
Bread and Salt has been on my list for years and I finally made it thanks to a good friend with wheels! We arrived at 11:57 AM on a Friday and there was a short line. We ordered a sandwich and a few pastries: + vanilla bomboloni + Raspberry cookie + mortadella + Mozzarella and eggplant sandwich The mortadella sandwich was incredible, and my favorite pastry was the bamboloni. Raspberry cookie was also great. Pizzas didn't begin until 12:25, but we were still there eating our treats so we were able to grab two pizzas without waiting too long! The cheese pizza was incredible - definitely would recommend that. I thought the famed red pizza was only okay so would skip. Wish it was a little more convenient but worth it if you can make the trip!
Im already less keen on pizza than most. The mozzarella pie was better than the tomato, but neither impressed me. Especially at $54 (!!) two halves of the cheese (it's a lot of pizza). I tend toward topic heavy pizzas so traditionalists may resonate more with this. It wasn't made clear that halves could be ordered so we ended up way over ordering. Had a sandwich the next day and the ingredients were good, but not enough of the good stuff like fig jam for the $17 price. It's a little spot the opens a couple of garage doors. Not seating but some standing tables in a covered area outside. You can shop for other products like sauce, pasta, and drinks. Weird hours and made to order is just not worth it for me.
Bread and Salts seems to really have found its groove these days. Small gripe on my part but I miss: online ordering, pizza by the slice, and the potato pizza. Idk if they are still doing the potato pizza and I am missing it, but more of that please.
This place is like a garage that opens its doors. There are standing tables covered by umbrellas but no seating which makes this more of a grab and go spot. My group got here around 11:50am in a Friday and there was barely any line but it started to build a little after noon. The bread here is heavenly! The sandwich bread is super thin, crispy and the right amount of oily. I also got a half tomato focaccia which was super fluffy and beautifully charred on top with the tomatoes. Mortadella sandwich - I never thought bread and a cold cut could be so delicious. That being said, I did wish there was cheese on the sandwich especially since it's $14. Fennel salami and pecorino sandwich - our favorite! The thin crispy bread was perfect with the meat and cheese. Prosciutto, eggplant and cheese sandwich - came on different bread than the other sandwiches. It was more like a baguette than crispy flatbread like the others. The prosciutto is not cured so it's more like ham. Bomboloni - do not miss out on these!! Perfectly fluffy and lightly sugared with vanilla or cherry custard inside. I don't like my desserts too sweet and this was perfect.
Sourdough loaf, olive oil cake, any one of their sandwiches, iced cafe leccese, that little green bean side dish, macchiatos. These are just a few of my favorite things from Bread & Salt. This unique little spot helps make The Heights such a great place. They are only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and I a pretty sure they close by like 3 or 4, so there is usually a line and then a wait. But I am pretty confident it is worth it! A few things to note before you go for the first time: -There are no seats, but a few high top tables that folks tend to share with others. -There bread is fantastic! I usually get a full or half loaf to bring home, eat as much as I can in a day or two and then slice and freeze the rest. -Their coffees have usually come for me in little cups to stay. This was a surprise to me the first time I came, but turned out to be a nice way to slow down for a few minutes and sip my macchiato on a walk with my pup at one of the hightops (see photos for a look at macchiato and also pup). -I've heard the pizza is delicious! That's for my next visit. But I usually go for the sandwiches which are pretty outrageously good. -The line doesn't usually get too bad until like 11 or so, so go early and you'll be in and out. While I wish I could stop by on a random week day, the fact that they are only Fri-Sun makes it a weekend treat and something to do on the way home from the Farmers Market at Riverview Park.
I have been wanting to try this place for the longest because everyone kept hyping about how good it is. Well, to my disappointment, this place is overrated. The pizza was decent but definitely not worth the travel, the wait and the $50 price tag. It was good but not the 'best pizza I ever had' good. The crust is very thin and crispy but a little too burnt for my liking. We also got a few of the bombolone and that was really good! I would definitely come back for that!
Extremely over rated. Not sure why there is such a long line here. Prices are expensive and what I had was pretty mediocre. I had the chocolate ricotta crostata which was close to $8. It tasted like a slice of ny cheesecake with some pastry on top. But it wasn't rich, I barely tasted ricotta and there was like a dollop of chocolate if that. And it took an hour to get. There are no tables inside but a few high tops outside.
Omg incredible experience! I live in the Heights and love how conveniently close this unique eatery is to our place. My partner and I come here pretty often to pickup food; they had a special today - bread with a puree of tiny fish and spicy tomato sauce. It was incredible - a spicy flavor explosion in my mouth!! Overall, the quality of everything on their menu is exceptional. I always keep coming back for their specials. If you appreciate an eatery that prioritizes nuanced and deep flavors + quality above all else, this is your place and is money well spent!
Tried this place with friends while visiting and it was delicious! I got the Mozzarella, tomato and arugula sandwich and it was the perfect sandwich for a very hot day! I also tried the Caffe Leccese and it was very delicious! I could've had 4 of them. The service was decent for a hot and busy day, the staff were very knowledgeable about their menu so that was very helpful since I am so indecisive. There is no setting, only standing and table outside so I would take it and go to the nearby park.

This hits me in the feels. The tomato pie and the focaccia slices reminded me of my grandmothers recipes. It was so nostalgic and felt like home. Service was great- the staff is kind and passionate about providing great service! We enjoyed eating outside (standing under umbrella). Please go asap! read more
The jewel of JC Heights. Bread and Salt does everything right. Delicious, authentic ingredients all imported from Italy or curated locally. Insane breads, pastries, sandwiches, specials, and pizza after 12pm. Sometimes there's a line, sometimes there's not. But always worth it! Don't sleep on the tomato pie. read more

Really good food but a bit overpriced. Simple but delicate Italian specialty's. I would come again read more
I'm glad we took the staff's recommendation to order the pizza rosso rather than the mozzarella option, as we were tempted to do. Simple, thin crust that brought to mind some of the better pies I've had from Sally's in New Haven. It seems like the brusque style may have rubbed some people the wrong way, but at the end of the day, the staff seemed genuinely interested in showcasing the best of what they have to order. read more

Excellent food and service. I was skeptical of the Rossa pizza because I love cheese and thought I would feel its absence... but the bread MORE than made up for it. I would order it again and I don't even mind that there is no cheese involved. Staff was very cool and the vibes are chill. I just wouldn't recommend it if you're in a rush, as I did wait close to 30 mins for my order. But that's a testament to the freshness and craftsmanship. read more
Is it tasty pizza? Yeah, sure... it's tasty and all. Is it worth all the hype? Yeah sure, it's tasty and all. Is it a qualified contender for best pizza in metro NYC? Come on!... just come on. If we ever make it back we'll have to try the bread and pastries and such that everyone else raves about. read more

Hidden gem! Minimal signage outside so we were glad we stumbled upon this cute spot by mistake!! We grabbed 2 pastries, a Maritozzi and Bomboloni with Jam. We loved the bomboloni! The Maritozzi had this delicious whipped cream but I'm much more of a yeast donut lover so that one hit the spot. Would recommend you stop in! Apparently they are also known for their pizza/bread! We will have to try next time.. read more

Found this place to be an interesting concept as it's open only during the weekends! I was really looking to try out pizza at their bakery but they said, they don't sell it by slice so they suggested focaccia bread which was similar to pizza. The best part was that it tasted really fresh with tomatoes, green olive and a bit of olive oil added on it. The staff felt a bit rude to me.. idk why but when I greeted them, they didn't respond in a good way and also while the order was delivered, the guy called my name and went inside whereas the other customers were handed their order with staff wishing them for the rest of the day! read more
This place is so good and worth all the carbs. - Coffee products are good - Of their pastry items, I love their bombolini doughnuts. They are incredibly light and the filling changes every week. - Their sandwiches! Although each are sized/portioned differently and the selection is subject to change. - I wasn't as big of a fan of the pizza. Currently they are sold as pies. I like the sandwiches way more than the pizza. - Parking wasn't bad First time we went we were confused when the pizza would be available. We likely waited longer than we had to. Keep an eye on their Instagram for updates. read more

Updated review. Very limited hours, weekends now from 10 to 4, high prices, and a curated menu. First, I live two blocks from here and I am glad they exist. I've been a customer for three years and all the way up to a $14 veggie sandwich but I drew the line there. I'm sorry, I have to balance price to value at some point in time. I noticed this week they returned to $12, so maybe they capitulated. I honestly don't know how much is real costs and how much is just seeing what they can charge. Quality is excellent, but a few of their offerings have been less than stellar considering the price. I disliked "braised" zucchini, very mushy and wet. I lost a tooth cap to their biscotti and I miss for their pre-Covid mushroom pizza. Now that that's off my chest, I feel better, 5/5 food, 4/5 service, 3.5/5 value. read more

Came here for the first time and I'm hoooooked! 10/10 bombolone - probably one of the best donut I have ever eaten in America. So fluffy, so pillowy. I could eat 10 of these. 7/10 for the prosciutto preserved zucchini sandwich, bread is a lil too hard for my jaw, but love the preserved zucchini x prosciutto combo. Pizza: get it. This is what pizza dreams are made of. Crusty crust that holds it shape up, delicious sauce that's perfectly seasoned, and mozzarella that pulls ever so gently on the surface. 10/10 Can't wait to try everything else. read more
So good - everything. And the bomboloni and Maritozzi will make you have a religious experience. Besides the pizza and bread and fantastic sandwiches they sell super excellent artisanal olive oils, packaged pastas and condiments which are very hard to find anywhere here. Recommend going with a few people to order selection of everything on their daily menus and go to the park and have it there. read more
If you like to be in control of the pizza you get, you hate waiting for things that normally come quick, and if three available pizzas at 6:45pm followed by no available pizzas at 6:55pm sounds like a terrible time, you might be annoyed. If you like beyond amazing pizza with choices that change every 10 minutes, a supplemental menu that changes on the daily, and have no place else in particular to be, you will feel most at home at Bread and Salt. It's no wonder Pete Wells has got Jersey City on his radar - Razza was (and continues to be) an incredible find, and Bread and Salt is another surefire gem, and is also the only authentic Roman style pizza place around. How does it work? Well, however they want it to. Bread and Salt basically makes whatever pizza they are "feeling" at the moment. Could be no cheese at all, could be fresh mozzarella, could be topped with nduja (look it up) and potato. No matter what it is, rest assured it will be made with authentic Italian ingredients and be topped with just the right amount of salt and olive oil. The crust was fantastic and I could drink the sauce, if presented with the opportunity to do so. How many slices did we have? I honestly lost count. I would say ~4 each, probably a little more. We also enjoyed the honey & ricotta (so creamy) and tangerine & grapefruit salad (yes, olive oil on fruit is a surefire win), and although we were really looking forward to the meatballs, they weren't on the menu that night. Not to worry, we will be back. As we were leaving, they were putting out a caramelized onion, guanciale, and pecorino cheese pizza. As full as we were, we had to try a slice. Amazing. The guanciale was insane, a few very thin slices add an incredible amount of flavor. And...since we were standing up there, I got salami and provolone sandwich, delicious meat and cheese in between two very thin slices of what I imagine is the very same dough they use for the pizza. Topped with EVOO and salt, this was my lunch the next day and I can say with very little doubt that it was truly one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Like amazing, authentic roman-style pizza? Add Bread and Salt to your list. BOYB and grab a seat for a while. Because pizza. Because Jersey. read more

Very popular spot that's worth trying. Found the items hit or miss. The spinach tart and focaccia slice were good, though the bread leaned a bit burnt. Puntarelle salad is worth trying simply for its relative rarity on menus nowadays. Appreciate the simplicity of items and ingredients overall, but found the sandwich underwhelming. Didn't find the bread special, a bit tough, so it fell flat. Great salads with lovely dressings. Nice service who work around the busy crowd, but things naturally sell out so worth arriving early. read more

Fantastic bakery and worth the wait! You know you're in the right spot when you see people waiting and eating at the tables on the sidewalk - certainly stands out from the neighborhood. Beautiful little market space with Italian goods and drinks for sale. But the star of this show is certainly the baked goods. It's always made to order, be prepared to wait 5-10 minutes after chatting with the cashier. The focaccia is doughy towards the center, crunchy at the crust, and covered in delicious tomatoes. I really enjoyed the sandwich with the thin and crispy crust used in place of bread. The salami is a little greasy (as it should be), paired with bold cheese, but I wish the fig jam was spread out a bit more (it was just a few large chunks). read more

There have been some vegan options the two times I have been there, but I don't think they are intentionally trying to have a vegan option so I would call ahead.
