The owner of Honest Auto Repair, Larry, was the service manager of a local car dealer's service…read morecenter when I met him. I was introduced to him by word of mouth marketing; a co-worker of my wife's mentioned him to my wife when her vehicle wouldn't run after she arrived to work. We called Larry and he came over with a jump pack, got the vehicle going, said it was the alternator and he could have it ready in two hours. Almost to the minute, two hours later I got a call, car was ready and the price was his very reasonable estimate. The dealership was taken over by new management. They wanted to go with more "industry-standard" pricing and upselling. Larry was not a fan and resigned rather than follow the pressure to pad bills with pre-determined hours for a service, or trying to push additional repairs that may not be needed immediately. Within a month, the dealer had to close the service department, and was towing repairs to a second facility. Within a year, the dealership closed down. Larry opened Honest Auto Repair. He is pretty much a "one man" operation, and he keeps his estimates fair for parts and labor (my brakes were squeaking last November when the first snow fell, and I asked him to check them out. He said he brushed the rust off them, so the squeaking stopped, and quoted me a price to repair them, but said I could probably wait until spring for the work. There was no charge for brushing the rust off. I got through the winter just fine, and in May the brake light on the dash board came on. I took the car back to Larry, and he did the work, for his quoted estimate from November.) He handles the maintenance that he is equipped to do, will make recommendations for anything he isn't prepared to do, and his warranty is his personal commitment to "make it right" if your repair doesn't hold up. It is the way business should be done.

I took my car there one time to get work done and I recommended doing something else to car and they asked, "why?" They asked if I was having trouble or any issue and used the common sense of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it." I think another garage would have seen $$$ and performed unnecessary work. In my opinion, they are truly honest.

Now, I understand that they can't just waste their time chasing codes for free, but yes that was a little steep. I paid it because I needed my car repaired, and I really do like them. That being said, they now charge $253 to diagnose a check engine light. I just cannot afford to pay $250 simply to walk in the door before the repair pricing even begins, so I have had no choice but to take my car repair business elsewhere. They do a fantastic job, the techs are wonderful, the repairs have been good, but they have priced me out of being able to take my car to them. I USED to have almost all my car work done here when it was Dick Deans because they guys who owned and operated it were honest with money and work that was needed. I had wheel bearings replaced and they recommended work on all 4 wheels. I paid and drove away. About a month later I felt bouncing in my front tire. After having work done on that wheel I thought I was just driving too fast for the curves on the interstate...... But then while on the interstate it started again. I took my car to Costco because had bought the tires there and they will rebalance any tire they have sold. They told me to be VERY careful and get the car worked on ASAP, not going over 50+ mph. I did and it was confirmed that the bushings were shot. Two separate mechanics confirmed this should have been obvious. Not to mention the VERY LARGE BILL They had this wheel off and saw nothing. I or anyone else driving the car could have been hurt or killed for this negligence.

He'd already checked with three of his suppliers to no avail, but promised to check an additional source as well as his stock of used tires. Said he'd respond shortly after 7 AM. He did, and we had the used tires installed within an hour before 9AM. Price was fair, service was quick, and we got two name brand tires to tide us over until we can get a full new set (the tires we had we're original equipment run-flats with 44k miles on them. The place doesn't look like much, but they definitely know what they're doing and the responsiveness was stellar.

Dan McGurk and his team are the most caring, understanding, honest and knowledgeable people I've met in the car service industry. As a young female, I've dealt with a lot of repair shop managers who have either tried to treat me like a child or have taken advantage of the little car maintenance knowledge I possess. For years I have looked for a shop with integrity, one that provides quality service, are personable and are reasonable in cost. Today I can say that Brakes Plus in Council Bluffs, IA has gained a loyal customer. The first time I took my car into Brakes Plus was in January of this year. Had my front wheel bearings replaced along with an oil change. Service was fast and friendly and the cost was reasonable compared to what other shops were quoting me. I recently took my car in again on Saturday, July 5th. Dan and his team found the following needed to be replaced: shocks & struts, rear wheel bearings, serpentine belt & tensioner, rear brake pads/shoes, rear rotors and my overall rear brake hardware (caliper). Now, all of the items made sense, especially when Dan and Garrett took the time to show me each piece and explained why they needed to be replaced. The only pieces I was confused about were my brakes/rotors/brake hardware--let me tell you why. Last year in May I took my car to Jensen Tire & Auto after deciding to finally step away from the smaller shops around town. They replaced my rear rotors, brake system and calipers; definitely one large expense. Although I don't know much about cars, I do know that brand new brakes/rotors should last more than a year and knew they were still under warranty. To save some money I asked Dan to fix everything but the brakes/rotors/hardware as I was going to have Jensen take care of it under the warranties. He was very nice and understanding about it and asked me to give him a call in case he needs to clarify anything to Jensen--should have taken that as a sign. When I took it to Jensen they stated that nothing was wrong with my rear brake system and that they did not see a need to replace any pieces. I asked them for the tolerance specs on the brakes and rotors, they didn't have them exactly at that moment in time, but when they finally provided them there was an obvious issue with my brakes. So I called Dan and explained that Jensen was not finding a problem. After some back and forth conversations between the two shops and some very unprofessional comments from Jensen towards Brakes Plus, Dan asked me to bring my car back in as he would honor the warranty that Jensen seemed to be trying to avoid. Dan's team began working on my car as soon as I brought it in and got it back a couple hours later with brand new rotors, brakes, brake system and new warranties. When I asked Dan what I owed him (obviously thinking that I would need to pay for labor/shop supplies) he simply smiled and said, "We take care of our customers." That was it, no more fees or added expenses. The items I should have gotten replaced and the warranties that should have been honored by Jensen were honored by Brakes Plus. Aside from all the time and money I saved by going to Brakes Plus, I have gained a whole new understanding of how brakes, rotors, shocks/struts, belts and overall tire systems should work. I was pleasantly surprised with the level of time and energy Dan and his team dedicated to showing me the issues and explaining how the pieces are and should be working. Not only were they transparent with their services, they were allowing me to make informed decisions about one of my most expensive assets. I'm a repeat customer at this Brakes Plus location (27th & Broadway). They continue to do outstanding work and provide friendly customer service whenever I bring a vehicle to them. I do most of my auto repair and maintenance myself, but when I don't have the needed equipment or tools to do the job, I'll only go where I can count on reliable work being done. I always watch as they perform the work and they are very attentive to all the little details that make a good job great. This trip was for an alignment after I replaced my front struts, control arms, tie rod ends and sway bar links. The alignment was so bad I had a difficult time driving to the shop. I had taken my car into two other Brakes Plus locations, and after spending close to 2,000 dollars, I was still continuing to have the same problem. I was very upset and got the run around trying to get both the locations to make it right. I decided to take my car to this location, and after explaining the problems I was having to the manager Dan, and Baretta his assistant, they were very sympathetic and told me they would take care of the problem. They fixed it at no charge and I haven't had any problems since. I was extremely pleased with the service I received, and I will be bringing my car there for any future repairs. I had had a complete brake replacement done a year ago at Tires Plus now at Brakes Plus they showed me my brakes that I had just spent $1200 on a year ago and it was clear by what I was looking at. Tires Plus never replaced anything on my car, the disk was covered in many deep grooves, the caliber was shot and the pad was in shreds. Thank you Brakes Plus for showing me this. I've had my vehicle in here many times. This last time I was here, I just wanted my rotors turned however, they were unable to do so. They described the problems in detail and gave me the best option available. The man I spoke to on the phone was Dan. A very polite and professional individual. We had our alternator go out on us the night before. We called first thing in the morning and got right in. We asked for a ballpark price and acknowledged that it was not an official quote. Tessa told us it might take all day. We had our car back around lunch and for under what we thought it would cost. Tessa and the crew were amazing!
